Jude Kelly, who spoke to Radio Davos on World Women's Day 2024, says why it is vital to include men in the conversations about an issue that affects us all. Dr. Nayana Shah is an international scientist –a theoretical quantum physicist– dedicated to living a conscious, compassionate and creative life illuminated by a constant inquiry of truth. Using the quantum laws of physics, her research seeks to understand how different phases and properties of matter emerge in a collection of many particles interacting with each other under different conditions. That quest is also to identify the universalities within the diversity. Taking her scientific approach and experience to exploring and uncovering truths of life has led her to a deep study and practice of spiritual principles, vipassana meditation, yoga, non-violent communication and ahimsic living (rooted in her Jain upbringing), wholistic plant-based nutrition/life-style, regenerative design, and the interconnectedness of all including earth-energy-environment. Her extensive work in different arenas has included research, teaching, mentoring, starting and leading initiatives, grassroots activism, and facilitating groups at different levels involving a range of settings and diverse backgrounds; and through all of it she is devoted to realizing her holistic vision for a harmonious world.Parliament Global Sisters Fund:https://parliamentofreligions.org/womens-dignity/Dale Allen:https://www.inourrightminds.net/Interview Series:https://www.womenoftheworldsreligions.com/From Dale Allen:Let Your Voice Be Heard • Let Your Heart Be Inspired!I was honored to be a part of a special project for the Parliament of the World's Religions Women's Task Force: conducting interviews inside the first-ever Women's Village. Singer Macy Gray and actress Bette Midler made headlines recently for saying only women are women. The two celebrities made their bold statements—bold for this day and age, at least—over the July 4th holiday weekend. “WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name!" Midler, 76, wrote on Twitter. “They don't call us ‘women' anymore; they call us ‘birthing people' or ‘menstruators', and even ‘people with vaginas'! Don't let them erase you! Every human on earth owes you!”Gray, 54, appearing on Piers Morgan's show on the Fox Nation streaming service, discussed the issue of transgender "women"—biological men—competing on women's sports teams. “I will say this, and everybody is going to hate me, but as a woman, just because you go change your parts, doesn't make you a woman,” Gray said.Famed “Harry Potter” author J. K. Rowling has repeatedly been maligned for making similar comments to those of Midler and Gray. The increase in celebrities' willingness to say "only a woman can be a woman," raises the question: Is the transgender movement on the ropes? Common sense is like kryptonite to the transgender craze. If society's influencers are brave enough to continue sharing about biological reality, the theory that men can be women may collapse like the house of cards it is. The timing of Gray's and Midler's remarks might also have been influenced by the Supreme Court's June 24 decision to overturn the court's 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion ruling. When Roe was overturned, “the sea of protest signs outside the court referred not to ‘birthing people' or ‘people who menstruate,' but instead to women, losing their rights, or politicians trying to control women's bodies,” Douglas Blair wrote in a recent Daily Signal commentary. The political left may be waking up to the reality that they cannot be outraged over women losing abortion access in some states while at the same time declaring that a man can be a woman. On today's episode of the “Problematic Women” podcast we discuss the ways in which celebrities' willingness to state facts about sex and gender could influence national opinion on the transgender issue. Also on today's show, we explain why it's not dangerous for women to use period tracker apps. And there is a crisis at the Southern border. Now, some Texas counties have declared they are under what they are calling "an invasion.” We explain what you need to know. And as always, we'll be crowning our "problematic woman" of the week. Hour 3 - Good Wednesday morning! Here's what Nick Reed covers this hour: The National Education Association, America's largest teachers' union, is holding a vote on requiring mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations, masks and testing for students before classes return in the fall. Nick was shunned this morning for airing a political ad that a listener didn't agree with. Nick explains why we air political ads, how political ads work, and why we can't just censor ads that we may not agree with. Buffer Insurance condemned "secular" companies' response to the end of Roe v. Wade, vowing instead to support female employees who get pregnant and even cover the costs of giving birth. Bette Midler is facing backlash for a Twitter post. Midler wrote, "WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name! RFI Planète Radio is sponsoring a video contest, and we want you to enter! Planète Radio is an RFI department that reaches out to remote populations around the world. For the fourth consecutive year, Planète Radio is holding a video competition on environmental issues. The theme of this year's competition is “Show how they feel”: You are to create a 3-minute video about climate change, the environment, pollution - told by the people it affects. Here's what Planète Radio says about the competition: “Environmental deterioration, climate change, pollution, everybody's talking about it. But amid articles, figures, and expert reports, what do we really know about the feelings of the people already impacted? The video clips produced by the ePOP community in more than 50 countries allow us to hear from those who never ask for anything yet have seen it all - those who are already living with these changes that deteriorate their quality of life.” Your project can be intergenerational: Get together with your grandfather, your aunt, someone older in your community and ask them how they feel about what is happening to their surroundings or to the place where they grew up. Your project can also be about how you, or people your age, feel about climate change, given that your future will be affected by this phenomenon. Gather the words of those around you who are confronting the environmental crisis in their daily lives, investing, researching, and questioning the urgency of deploying solutions to face it. Prizes for this year's competition include equipment grants from 1,000 to 4,500 euros, as well as ePOP promotion kits and other goodies. For competition guidelines and more information about the four different categories you can enter, click here. You can also write to us at english.service@rfi.fr if you need more help. We're very proud that the winner in the ePOP 2020 RFI Club category went to an English language club – Adita Prithika's RFI Agnichiragu Phoenix Club in Tamil Nadu, India. Here's Adita's award-winning video. Please note that you do not have to be a member of an RFI English Club to enter. Everyone is welcome! The deadline for entries is 1 May, so get to work! Erwan and I are busy cooking up special shows with your musical requests, so get them in! Send your musical requests to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr Tell us why you like the piece of music, too – it makes it more interesting for us all! Be sure you check out our wonderful podcasts! In addition to the breaking news articles on our site, with in-depth analysis of current affairs in France and across the globe, we have several podcasts which will leave you hungry for more. There's Paris Perspective, Africa Calling, Spotlight on France, and of course, The Sound Kitchen. We have a bilingual series - an old-time radio show, with actors (!) to help you learn French, called Les voisins du 12 bis. And there is the excellent International Report, too. As you see, sound is still quite present from the RFI English service. Keep checking our website for updates on the latest from our excellent staff of journalists. The address is english.service@rfi.fr If you would like to donate stamps and postcards, feel free! Our address is listed below. Another idea for your students: my beloved music teacher from St Edward's University in Austin, Texas, Br Gerald Muller, has been writing books for young adults in his retirement – and they are free! There is a volume of biographies of painters and musicians called Gentle Giants, and an excellent biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., too. They are also a good way to help you improve your English - that's how I worked on my French, reading books which were meant for young readers – and I guarantee you, it's a good method for improving your language skills. To get Br. Gerald's free books, click here. Independent RFI English Clubs: Be sure to always include Audrey Iattoni (audrey.iattoni@rfi.fr) from our Listener Relations department in all your RFI Club correspondence. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! And don't forget, there is a Facebook page just for you, the independent RFI English Clubs. Only members of RFI English Clubs can belong to this group page, so when you apply to join, be sure you include the name of your RFI Club and your membership number. Everyone can look at it, but only members of the group can post on it. If you haven't yet asked to join the group, and you are a member of an independent, officially recognized RFI English club, go to the Facebook link above, and fill out the questionnaire !!!!! (if you do not answer the questions, I click “decline”). There's a Facebook page for members of the general RFI Listeners Club, too. Just click on the link above and fill out the questionnaire, and you can connect with your fellow Club members around the world. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! This week's quiz: On 5 March, we had an early tribute to International Women's Day, which is celebrated every year on 8 March – and to that end, the quiz was about the holiday. As I noted then, International Women's Day has a long history, with different countries proposing a Women's Day in the early 20th century. I asked you to do a little research and find out when the earliest version of Women's Day occurred, who organized it, and in which country. The answer is: According to the United Nations' article “Background: International Women's Day”, the earliest version of Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Party of New York, in New York City, on 28 February 1909. Then, at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference, the German delegates proposed an annual Women's Day which was adopted by various countries over the years. International Women's Day became a global holiday when it was added to the calendar of official United Nations Days in 1977. The winners are: RFI Listeners Club members Rachid Dahmani from M'sila, Algeria; Tasneem Saleh from Nilphamari, Bangladesh; Arne Timm from Harjumaa, Estonia; Radhakrishna Pillai N. from Kerala State in India, and RFI English listener Lata Khondaker from Bogura, Bangladesh. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “Dance with Waves” by Anouar Brahem, performed by Brahem and his quartet; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “Africa Unity a Must” by Femi Kuti, performed by Kuti and Positive Force, and “Turbulences” by Michel Portal, performed by Portal and his ensemble. Do you have a musical request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... You have to listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, refer to Michael Fitzpatrick's article to help you with the answer. You have until 9 May to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 14 May podcast. When you enter, be sure you send your postal address with your answer, and if you have one, your RFI Listeners Club membership number. Send your answers to: english.service@rfi.fr or Susan Owensby RFI – The Sound Kitchen 80, rue Camille Desmoulins 92130 Issy-les-Moulineaux France or By text … You can also send your quiz answers to The Sound Kitchen mobile phone. Guests: Authors Kimberlee Williams and Debby Irving Kimberlee Williams, in her book Dear White Woman, Please Come Home (which Debby Irving edited and helped publish) dreams of finding her “missing” white sister. With vulnerability, sorrow, rage, and humor, Kimberlee explores through a series of letters how white women, often despite their best intentions, signal to her and other women of color to proceed with caution when in their presence. Based on real events, each letter serves as testimony to the micro-aggressions that undermine and make invisible Black and brown women, and make relationships difficult or impossible. My guests, Kimberlee Williams and Debby Irving, and I discuss: How, as white, brown, and Black women, we are wired to protect our sense of belonging, which keeps us in the bubble of our own experiences; That historically, the role of women of color has been to serve, comfort, protect, coddle, nourish, and elevate white women; How we can boldly disrupt that pattern; and The need for all women to bravely and honestly face our own beliefs and attitudes, so we can look upon and care about one another as sisters.
Happy women's day to every women listening to my podcast..
In the past week my heart has been broken hearing about the war in Ukraine. Such pointless death and destruction. About a million have been displaced and more are fleeing daily. Before Putin decided to invade Ukraine, I sat down with a woman named Samira Harnish. She started a non-profit in Utah called Women of the World. This non-profit helps forcibly displaced women become gainfully employed and financially independent. This upcoming Wednesday March 9 they will be having a fashion show to raise funds for the ladies seeking aid. It was awe-inspiring to learn about this incredible organization. I'm so glad I got a chance to chat with Samira and learn more about this organization. Go to womenofworld.org for more information and stories. I hope you enjoy our conversation.
¡Hola chavos!
Samira Harnish founded Women of the World to help women displaced from their home countries gain economic success, education, support, and to learn English. One of the main cultural and fundraising events the organization presents each year is the Fashion Show and Cultural Gala where refugees can showcase traditional garments from their home country and culture. This year's event is at Trolley Square, March 9th, 2022. In this episode of Utah Weekly Forum, Samira Harnish joins FM100.3 Host Rebecca Cressman with details on how the community can help support these women regain independence and celebrate their resilience and dignity. What a better way to celebrate Women's Day & Week than to dedicate a special WoW to the Women of the World! Through our voices we share the words and work of women who have inspired us so we can honour them, thank them and remember them in this special occasion. Their strength, courage and struggles are what make the world of women so intense and what continues to drive the need for awareness and change especially in relation to human rights, access to education, domestic violence and gender parity. This has been a fantastically enriching community experience: each speaker chose freely the text and quote they wanted to record and sent it to me. I then curated the production of the episode creating sounds and music as I was putting the clips together and following the emotions. I am grateful for their participation and willingness to take part of this! The speakers and their chosen female author, artist, writer, philosopher or influencer, are: Dorota Grabowska => Tamara de Lempicka & Michelle Obama Federica Traverso => Natalia Ginzburg & Elif Shafak Andrea Bressan => Mia Martini & Mary Shelley Chiara Covone => Susan Jeffers Xi Xi Jia => Anjali Sud Nieves Tortosa => Coco Chanel Vasco Teixeira => Jane Fonda Gloria Zhang => Brene Brown Petra Blume => Brene Brown Irina Bouras => Simona Halep Francesca Ceccherini => Hannah Arendt Anat Wulff => Golda Meir Germana Barba => Virginia Woolf All rights reserved to the original authors of the texts and quotes that are being recited. For the song of Mia Martini, I took the liberty of freely translating and interpreting it from Italian to English to better render the full meaning of the lyrics. Original music score by Paola Granati
