Ready for an extraordinary tale of athletic longevity? At 73 years old Rick Colella's swimming journey spans from Olympic medals to over 50 Masters World records, proving that athletic excellence knows no age limits.Colella's remarkable career began with a fourth-place finish at the 1972 Munich Olympics, followed by a bronze medal in Montreal in 1976. But what happened after his Olympic glory makes his story truly exceptional. While most elite swimmers hang up their goggles after reaching competitive peaks, Colella never fully left the water. This consistent connection with swimming—even during his decades-long Boeing career—has become his secret weapon for sustained excellence into his 70s.Now competing in the 70-74 age group with Puget Sound Masters, Colella has rewritten the record books with over 120 national records and more than 50 world records. His training approach combines old-school discipline with modern technique refinements. Despite his Olympic pedigree, Colella humbly embraced coaching feedback that completely transformed his stroke mechanics later in life. "Your breaststroke timing is terrible," his coach bluntly told him—feedback that helped him adapt to modern techniques and continue breaking records. What drives someone to maintain such dedication for decades? Colella's answer is refreshingly simple: "I just love swimming. I guess I'm not even sure I recognize how much I like it, except that I must, because I never stopped doing it." This passion extends beyond personal achievement. After their son's diagnosis with FSHD muscular dystrophy, Rick and his wife Terry founded a research nonprofit, Friends of FSHD, that now raises nearly $1 million annually—connections he credits largely to his swimming network. The organization is all-volunteer. We have no paid staff and our sponsors cover 100% of our operating and fundraising expenses. This means that 100% of donations to Friends goes directly to fund research. Rick Colella has emerged as a legendary figure in American swimming through his extraordinary Olympic career and record-breaking achievements in Masters swimming at age 70+.• Bronze medalist in the 1976 Montreal Olympics after finishing fourth in Munich in 1972• Set more than 120 Masters national records and over 50 world records• Trains six days a week with Puget Sound Masters at age 70+• Never fully stopped swimming after his Olympic career, maintaining consistency throughout his life• Found working with a coach after years of self-directed training revealed technique flaws that needed correction• Discovered that mental preparation and attitude significantly impact performance, even decades after Olympic competition• Co-founded Friends of FSHD Research with his wife after their son's muscular dystrophy diagnosis• Organization has grown from raising $180,000 in first year to nearly $1 million annually• Emphasizes consistency as the key to swimming success at any age• Enjoys the intergenerational aspects of Masters swimming and the supportive communityWhether you're seeking inspiration for your own athletic journey or curious about the mindset of champions, Colella's story demonstrates how passion, consistency, and community create a foundation for lifelong achievement. As we get older, it is challenging to create new authentic friendships and relationships. Where do we meet them? What do we talk about? What questions do we ask to get the conversation going? How do we push through the awkward? What happens if it isn't an instant connection? We all need connection and community. There are healthy ways to do that regardless of whether you are an introvert or extrovert. We get into it with Michele Colella from the Beauty Boost Pittsburgh and she shares her expertise with us. You will definitely take away some tips and tricks from Michele's experience. A little information about our guest: Michele Colella is the City Owner of The Beauty Boost Pittsburgh, a vibrant community for those who identify as women to become their most healthy, empowered, and beautiful selves through regular events and activities–from fitness sessions to empowerment and entrepreneur workshops, social gatherings, and weekend retreat getaways–creating opportunities for personal growth, genuine connection, and a good time. With over 100 active small business collaborations and a community and event attendee base of over 1,000, The Beauty Boost is reshaping how women in Pittsburgh connect. Michele, a former fitness competitor and health and life coach with over a decade of counseling experience, found herself at a transitional point. Grappling with career changes, a breakup, and outgrown friendships, she yearned for friendship with like-minded women and took a brave step by attending a coffee meet-up she found online alone. The Beauty Boost hosted that meetup, and Michele walked away with more than she could have imagined. She took ownership of the Pittsburgh chapter, one of 25 nationwide, within two years of her first experience. Michele's journey from member to owner underscores one of her strongest beliefs: monumental change often starts with small, courageous steps. She rekindled her passion for empowering women to create joy-filled, healthy lives. She fell back in love with fitness, food, and life through her own personal journey. She did things that scared her–things she didn't think she was strong enough to do–and discovered she was more than capable. Michele began living in her authentic self. While Porter Burks was in mental crisis, the 22 year old black man was shot 19 times by Detroit Police on the city's west side on October 2, 2022. Police allege he was carrying a knife and went for officers. But video of the incident shows a lot of distance between burks and the police. The incident has drawn national attention, protest, and raised questions about how should we respond to and care for people in these situations. Importantly, there's also a $50 million lawsuit filed on behalf of the family against both the city of Detroit and the five officers involved. Attorney Geoffrey Fieger's case alleges assault, battery, gross negligence, wanton and willful misconduct, violation of department policies — and violations of the freedom of information and persons with disabilities civil right acts. To help sort this out, an attorney who I believe is an expert in the field, Vince Colella of Moss and Colella. He joins me as we discuss police use of force, mental health, the state of the case as it is today, and some likely outcomes.
