Send us a textYou guys! I feel like a mixture of Jack Hannah and Ernest P. World!!This is such a fun episode! For years now, y'all know that Audubon Institute holds our heart, right? WELL- I thought what better way to welcome in National Alligator Day on May 29th than to have a REPTILE TAKEOVER! We will have an amazing Video Version coming out on that day BUT TODAY, we get an in depth and interesting run down on MANY of the reptiles Audubon Zoo offers at their campus! Today, we welcome the REPTILE CURATOR for Audubon Zoo! Robert sat down with me and my daughter, Alli Mae to not only ask questions from the submitted questions by kids in our audience BUT my girl got to get her feet wet behind the microphone! She loved it and can't wait to come back! Frogs, snakes, iguanas, OH MY! Then later, we are still at Audubon Zoo BUT THIS TIME we welcome the campus' "gator gals!" They do not call them that. I do though! Listen as Ashely and Victoria answer the cutest questions submitted by our little kiddo audience! Do you know how high a gator can jump? I'll give ya hint. Papa says... NOPE!! And see me run! Even more interesting.... Do you know HOW they jump so high? Find out Now!Thank you Audubon Institute and as always Casey for making it happen! AND DO NOT MISS OUR LIVE SHOW AT ZOO-BILATION! An Audubon Members Only event taking place June 7 from 4:30-7:30pm. Send us a textI just want to hold on to this season for jus a little bit longer! Is that possible?Well, to make it even better, it coincides with our 100th podcast episode! Churning out a new show every Friday for the last 4 seasons has been an incredible and validating experience. My goal has always to bring words and sentences from my blog and create real life conversations with the humans of our society that bring a positive aspect that can create an inspiring spark inside of anyone that is listening. With that said, thank you to all of you that are listening each week, that are sharing our stories, our guests that open up their heart and speak their truth, and to our amazing team that puts it all together for everyone to listen. Adrian from Solid Ice Media is the man and I am so grateful! And lastly, to our amazing family of sponsors. Without each and every one of our amazing businesses partnering with us, the NolaPapa Podcast would not be possible. Thank you from the bottom of Papa's heart! Here is to 200 more! Before I begin, I would like to send our thoughts, prayers, good vibes and NOLA LOVE and light to all that has been effected by the Hurricanes in Florida and throughout, this year. As a New Orleanian, your papa knows just how hard it can be. Now with that said, Let's get to our Halloween Special! If you have ever been to Walt Disney World, specifically, Disney Springs, then you are bound to have come across this wickedly insane cookie coming from an eerie bakery called GIDEONS BAKEHOUSE. But for this month only, owner, Steve Lewis has coined the new GIDEONS SPOOKHOUSE for Halloween. You guys, listen. I am as picky as the next person. It is not just about the cookie. It is the entire experience. From the gothic look on the exterior, with gargoyles on the rooftop, to the giant doors that open to reveal a spooky and immersive interior. The attention to detail is staggering and is nothing less that what you would expect inside of a Disney World property. Steve has always leaned to the dark and weird side of life, which personally, we all need sometimes. We take ourselves to seriously and for just a few minutes, Steve Lewis wants to transport you to a  mysterious place, that gives off an old library with cobwebs vibe. The lore coming from the bookshelves with animations of his iconic mascots that change throughout the seasons. However, For Halloween Steve takes it to the next level with cookies and cakes and merch that you can only find this time of year! I am always blown away by creative artists that have such an exquisitely eye to detail. Steve's take on life and what he offers to it is absolutely inspirational and I am honored to welcome him BACK.  Thank you brother. You may like black, but the light you bring to our world is blinding. Next up, AUDUBON ZOO!!!Y'all, you know our family loves the Audubon Institute. Campus to campus, it is so much fun to take my 3 kids all over Audubon. From Monkey Hill to the Stingrays! There is so much to explore at Audubon. This week, we are celebrating our 100th episode Thank you to our family of amazing sponsors! According to the Washington Post food columnist, growing and sourcing your own food just makes it taste better. On this week's show, we get our hands dirty and meet some people who have a passion for the great outdoors. Before Tamar shares her wisdom with us, we learn what the buzz is about at New Orleans' Audubon Zoo. The humble little honey bee is one of the most important players in our ecosystem. On this week's show, we circle the globe in pursuit of a honey of a tale. We begin right here in our own backyard at the Audubon Zoo. While more exotic creatures may be what draw the crowds, both native and European honey bees can be found bumbling around the zoo's grounds. Curator Dominique Fleitas gives us a tour of the Pollinator Garden and shows us the hives she helps maintain in the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit.

Join Phoebe and Lesley as they chat with Christopher T. Johnson on environmental policy, the Audubon Zoo, the simultaneous  joy and devastation it is to be black and LGBTQIA+ in 2019, and more. Recorded on 1/31/2019. Clarifications from the episode: 1) Lucy McBath’s son, Jordan Davis, was murdered in Jacksonville, FL. The documentary discussed is titled 3 ½ min, 10 bullets.  2) The Gina Rodriguez interview discussed was for the motion picture Smallfoot, and her co-star is Yara Shahidi.  3) We understand that since this episode was recorded, some allegations regarding the validity of the incident involving Jussie Smollett have been brought forward. Regardless of the conclusion of this investigation, we must continue to foster a space that is safe for victims of assault to come forward, and this includes acknowledging that the majority of reported incidents are true, and that many remain unreported. Brenda Walkenhorst is the Education Director at the Audubon Zoo. According to Walkenhorst, this holiday season the Audubon Zoo is showcasing  a unique, animal-themed holiday exhibit: the Audubon Zoo Lights. Made in China, these larger-than-life, illuminated silk figures depict some of the Zoo’s most popular animals. Chinese artisans craft the glowing figures using the same techniques they use to create Chinese lanterns. In addition to the beautiful light displays, the Zoo is offering other family activities, including the Gum Drop Hop, an Elves Crafts Workshop, and other activities for children. The Zoo’s animal ambassadors will also be present to allow visitors to see some of the zoo’s animals up close. Of course, Santa will be on hand for picture opportunities. As part of its conservation efforts, the Zoo is collecting used and broken Christmas lights. The proceeds from the recycled lights will go to the “Lights for Lions” conservation effort to save big cats, including lions in Tanzania. Audubon Zoo Lights will run through December 30, 2018. In this podcast, Walkenhorst describes some of the animal light displays and offers details about the various family activities.

*WARNING* To our animal care friends - we talk recent Audubon Zoo events and Harambe.  We were asked from a non-zoo industry listener about our thoughts. Here's a hint - we get really angry - and it's not directed at the zoos. We talk insensitivity, how much people suck, and why the annual purge maybe isn't so bad. We also ask a listener's Would You Rather, and give a few shout-outs to some rad fans.

It’s Confetti Park Storytime! In this episode, we hear a wonderful New Orleans tale based on our favorite contemporary street vendor, Mr. Okra. The story was written in collaboration with Mr. Okra by Lashon Daley, and illustrated by Emile Henriquez. We are so lucky to have the story narrated for us by the author! And who is Mr. Okra? He is Arthur Robinson, a real life man who lives in New Orleans today! He a street vendor who sells produce from a truck. We all New Orleanians love to hear his recognizable call. From the inside flap of the book: “Up and down the streets of New Orleans, Mr. Okra drives his brightly painted truck. All over the city, you can hear his call: ‘I got oranges and bananas! I got tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocadoes!’ His fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables are as colorful as Mardi Gras floats, as green as the St. Charles Streetcar, and as different as the animals at the Audubon Zoo. Taste and tour New Orleans in this colorful story.” Lashon Daley came to New Orleans to work with a nonprofit rebuilding organization as an AmeriCorps member. During that time, Daley discovered the joys of performing as a storyteller, sparking her interest in New Orleans folklore and the stories residents tell. Today she is in Berkeley, California, where she is pursuing her PhD in performance studies. The colorful illustrations in the book were created by Emile Henriquez, a native New Orleanian who was born in the French Quarter. An art teacher, he also illustrated The Oklahoma Land Run, Toby Belfer Learns about Heroes and Martyrs, The Battle of New Orleans: The Drummer’s Story, D.J. and the Debutante Ball, D.J. and the Jazz Fest, and D.J. and the Zulu Parade. Thank you, Lashon, for sharing your lovely book on Confetti Park!
