“The Spook House,” an 1899 short story by Ambrose Bierce is suitably spooky for the season, but not in the way you expect. It was a favorite of H. P. Lovecraft, who praised its “terrible hints of a shocking mystery.” Also, a macabre bit of poetic whimsy from A.E. Houseman, and an intruder is welcomed in … Read More Read More The post The Spook House appeared first on Bone and Sickle.

On the podcast today, Steph sits down with Melbourne-based British urban contemporary artist Mysterious Al, one of the artists active during the UK's early street art wave, gaining fame from his work and the epic illegal street exhibitions he put on with some of today's most famous street artists. Famous since the 2000s for his street art, Al sat on the artistic extremes. A street art practice that suited only the streets and a professional illustration career polished and far from the art he dreamt of creating. In recent years, Al kicked his corporate career to the curb and worked to create his own unique style, rejecting the perfect lines, and typical practises of artists to instead strip it all back, ripping paper to shreds and finding inspiration with the pieces on the floor, creating collages that would turn into artworks, discovering a process to build his own artistic language that's unmistakably Mysterious Al. Today, we talk about that journey, the exhilarating process of messing shit up to find the art in the pieces and his insane exhibition, Spookhouse, which almost cost him his house deposit and literally gave him a hernia. HARVEY FIERSTEIN wrote the books ( or adapted the books ) for the Broadway musicals Funny Girl, Kinky Boots. Newsies as well as Torch Song Trilogy (Tony®, Drama Desk, and OBIE Awards), La Cage aux Folles (Tony® and Drama Desk Awards), The Sissy Duckling (Humanitas Award), A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations), Safe Sex (Ace Award), Legs Diamond, Spookhouse, Flatbush Tosca, Common Ground, and more. His political editorials have been published in The New York Times, TV Guide, The Huffington Post, and broadcast on PBS's “In the Life”. His children's book, The Sissy Duckling, is now in its fifth printing. As an actor, Mr. Fierstein is known worldwide for his performances in films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day, and on stage in Hairspray (Tony Award®), Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony Award®), and TV shows such as “Smash,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Good Wife,” “Cheers” (Emmy nomination), “The Simpsons,” and “Nurse Jackie.” Acclaimed originally for his groundbreaking writing and performance in his 1981 Torch Song Trilogy, Harvey Fierstein has refined and redefined the persona of the drag queen in the theater. Two years later, Fierstein brought that insight and humor into his book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, this “is the first Broadway musical ever to give center stage to a homosexual love affair – but don't go expecting an earthquake. The show at the Palace is the schmaltziest, most old-fashioned major musical Broadway has seen since ‘Annie,' and it's likely to be just as popular with children of all ages.” Fierstein subsequently wrote the book for Legs Diamond (1988) with music and lyrics by Peter Allen, who also starred in the show. He did not return to Broadway until 2002, when he took on the role of Edna Turnblad in the musical adaptation of Hairspray (book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan; music by Marc Shaiman; lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman). According to Ben Brantley, Fierstein's performance as Edna “is not just a cross-dressing sight gag. She's every forgotten housewife, recreated in monumental proportions and waiting for something to tap her hidden magnificence.” After playing Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, Harvey Fierstein wrote the book and starred in the 2008 musical, A Catered Affair. As a writer and actor, Fierstein has won three Drama Desk Awards and four Tonys®, most recently for his portrayal of Edna in Hairspray. His most recent memoir is called I Was Better Last Night. A movie that left many scratching their heads, we debate whether James Wan knowingly set out to make a campy throwback movie or if it was a swing and a miss. Regardless of your thoughts on the movie, lets all appreciate the fact that a new horror movie came out that got people talking- for better or worse! So, pick a side and tune in and for a good ol' fashioned verbal slobber knocker! ALSO AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE WITH VIDEO! It's great to be back, especially with this scorcher of an episode! Today, I am joined by my friend Dakota from the Phat and Spicy Youtube channel to talk all things hot sauce and horror! Having never seen these movies, I tasked him with watching Halloween (1978), the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and then to pick out a hot sauce that pairs well with each movie. It was eye-opening and a lot of fun discussing these beloved films I've seen countless times with someone that has never watched them. Tune in as we break down these sizzling hot classic movies with even hotter sauces! Be sure to add Phat and Spicy on Instagram and Youtube. They are a mere 100 subscribers away from reaching the 1,000 Youtube subscriber count. When they hit their goal, they will be pepper-spraying each other in the face! I know there are some pepper-heads in Spook House land, so lets show them some support and help them reach that scorching goal!

However, the evil leader of "The True Knot" (I know) the psychic vampire serial killers is hot on the trail of him and his new best friend an 18-year-old? a girl that is the most powerful psychic ever. If you've been a long time listener, you may remember Colin who joined me on a "Beers and Bullshit" episode a year ago. Today he joins the Spook House yet again! We talk gaming, movies we've watched, movie theaters, Resident Evil (the games and the movie), and I answer a few more listener questions! Unfortuately, there is an occasional static noise throughout this episode (yay for technical issues) so I apologize for that. But, I'm going to try and not let that ruin my love for this episode, because I enjoyed the hell out of recording it! You can find Colin's channel at twitch.tv/Ends_Meat.
Today we are celebrating 50 EPISODES of the Spook House! We're wrapping up Stephen King month with this somewhat overlooked gem from 2004 about a writer going crazy (shocker). Before jumping into the movie, we cover a bit of news, including the Johnny Depp/ Amber Heard debacle, and recount some recent movie viewings along the way. Thanks for for sticking with us for 50 episodes!
How can you go wrong with Stephen King and George Romero?! Aside from Stephen King's acting ability, you can't! (Sorry Steve). Today, we are discussing the almighty Creepshow- a slice of 80's greatness which marks our first anthology movie here on the Spook House. Before diving into this classic, we cover the latest horror news and recount some recent movie viewings!
We are celebrating a true horror icon this month, Sir Stephen King (we knighted him ourselves)! We kick it off with perhaps one of the more disturbing movies we've ever covered, "Gerald's Game". More of a psychological character study than a typical horror, we break down the movie in all its uncomfortable glory. We're excited to be back and to get the ol' Spook House ball rolling!

We Quaran-Team Up with our boys, The Spook House Podcast for this week's episode. Please find them at https://www.instagram.com/thespookhousepodcast and https://thespookhousepodcast.bigcartel.com/ The film is Hereditary, you know that delightful little family movie. Oh, whoops, wrong "D" word, I meant devastating! After Ari Aster's ambitious student films, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons and, Munchausen, he made his feature film debut with this film. Originally conceived as a typical family drama, he added demons and kings from hell for kicks. The film stars Toni Collette (Krampus, Knives Out). I cannot stress this enough... SHE IS THE ENTIRE MOVIE! If it was not for her gripping acting and reaction to the events of the film, truly I think the rest of it would be meaningless. Her husband is played by Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) who is clearly struggling with his wife's descent into madness. Their son is played by Alex Wolff, who went full method in his performance. He refused to be addressed as anything but Peter for the two months of filming and did not introduce himself to his cast mates until production was over. Lastly, I would just lose my head if I did not mention Milly Shapiro, who plays the tragic Charlie, who has never really had an identity of her own, as she was a vessel for the demon king, Paimon. Makeup was designed by Steve Newburn, who indicated that the *ahem* scene, was originally much gnarlier. We'll explain why and how on the show. The music was by Colin Stetson. He's collaborated with a few bands you may have heard of, basically ALL OF THEM: Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, Feist, Bon Iver, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Sinéad O'Connor, The National, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, BADBADNOTGOOD, Fink, Animal Collective, LCD Soundsystem, Hamid Drake, David Byrne, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, Jolie Holland, The Chemical Brothers, Shahzad Ismaily, My Brightest Diamond, Angélique Kidjo, Kevin Devine, David Gilmour, Anthony Braxton, and Beanie Burnett. This week's Hidden Track is Nite, with their song Genesis off their debut album: Darkness Silence Mirror Flame. While everyone is quarantined with nothing to do, the Spook House is here to watch shitty movies with you. Just pull up Final Destination 2 on Netflix and press play at the same time we do! We hope to bring you some more watchalongs during the quarantine, so shoot us some suggestions if you enjoy these. So, show off that mid riff, grab your Limp Bizkit cd, and spike those bleach blonde tips, cuz we're going back to the early 2000's!

We are kicking off Vampire month here at the Spook House, and what better way than to start with this 1985 Tom Holland classic! Before diving into the movie, we cover all the latest horror news, and we recount our recent movie viewings. We have some killer vampire flicks lined up for the month so be cool like Brewster and stay tuned for those!
We are kicking off "What the fuck?!" month here at the Spook House, and what better way to start than with this? A movie so bad Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zelwegger's publicists' tried to ban it from being re-released, we sit down and watch this dumpster fire of a movie and break it down in all its glory. But first, we cover the recent Halloween Kills screening reactions from those that attended it, and lots more!

In this special episode of the Spook House, I sit down with my good friend Colin, drink some beers, and hit record. Jason could not record this week, so this is a last minute podcast with no agenda, just riffing on movies and bullshit! There is not much talk about the Halloween series this episode, but we cover a variety of topics including: Halloween Kills, collecting horror memorabilia, Midsommar, the best found-footage movies, kicking cigarettes, and I answer some listener questions! While this episode is very different from our usual format, I enjoyed the hell out of it, and hope you do too! We will return next week with our coverage of the Halloween series, picking up where we left off with "Halloween 5". Special thanks to my friend Colin for stepping up at the last possible minute to come record this with me!
We're kicking off the "thorn trilogy" with "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers". A favorite of the Halloween sequels here at the Spook House, we dive into why this movie has such a well-deserved following. We explore whether "bandaged Michael" should have had more screen time, why sheriff Meeker is the best sheriff of the franchise, and how the hell Michael hung onto that pickup truck at the end! As usual, we cover the latest horror news, including news from The Spook House's inside source from the set of "Halloween Kills"! It's still John Carpenter month here at the Spook House, so we're carrying on with the 1983 deadly car flick "Christine". We cover the latest in horror news, recall the time we were kicked out of a "Freddy vs. Jason" screening when we were 15, cover "Christine" top-to-bottom, and reminisce on our first cars. This is by far the most divisive movie between the two of us we have discussed, so give it a listen and give us your thoughts on this movie! Episode #5 of the Geeks' Boutique Podcast is leaping over tall buildings and into your ear-holes now! We'll exaggerate about our Dick Picks as usual, during which the Geeks' Boutique Players will act out some of a new book from Albatross Funny Books, ( https://www.facebook.com/AlbatrossFunnybooks/ ), Galaktikon. Thanks to Jo Knipp for providing some background music called "Proposition" from his own Bat House Publishing. This is significant since this is a style called "Chip Music." It was used (and we suppose still used) in the early video games. Then we're talking' Marvel Legacy in "Beyond the Pages." In "The Mausoleum," we'll disinter our recommendations of the month, "68, Gunslinger Born, and Spook House." Stay tuned right after the show to hear a track from the Vibrolas, "Astro Space Van," from their album, "Memphis Cocaine Hippies." You can find them at https://www.facebook.com/Vibrolas/
This week we conclude our discussions of Eric Powell and The Goon with a focus on some Goon material we missed along the way and reviews of some other excellent Powell work like Chimichanga, Hillbilly, Big Man Plans, Spook House, and more.
