What makes New Orleans funk hit so different? In this episode, we dive into the swampy funk of The Meters, the iconic quartet that's left its mark on everything from Wu-Tang to Whitney Houston and beyond. We break down Leo Nocentelli's chicken-scratch guitar, Art Neville's genius riff comping, Zigaboo's “direct assault” on the high hat, and the thumping George Porter Jr. bass lines that defined their unique sound. And we explore how NOLA production legend Allen Toussaint provided the perfect roux to cook up The Meters' musical gumbo — simple yet complex, country yet urban, and 100% groovin'! Tune in for stories of Adam's funky DVD menu discoveries, Peter's Snug Harbor gig with Meters' royalty, and how the culture of the crescent city produced what may be the greatest funk band of all time.Spotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1BqPtMqKaAiYlLvzplNDwOTry OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/aboutAll about YHIhttps://lnk.to/youllhearitYB

In the vibrant music scene of New Orleans during the 1960s, a group of exceptional musicians came together to form a band that would redefine funk music. Bassist George Porter Jr. joined forces with Art Neville(keyboards), Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste (drums), and Leo Nocentelli (guitar) to create The Meters. The name itself hinted at their precision and rhythm. The Meters introduced a distinctive sound that blended funk, R&B, soul, and New Orleans grooves. Their music was characterised by tight and infectious instrumental grooves that quickly caught the attention of music enthusiasts. Hits like "Cissy Strut" and "Sophisticated Cissy" showcased their innovative approach to rhythm and melody, laying the foundation for the future of funk music. Their albums "The Meters" (1969), "Look-Ka Py Py" (1969), and "Struttin'" (1970) propelled them to prominence. While their initial success was felt mainly in their hometown of New Orleans, their influence spread far beyond. Despite not achieving mainstream commercial success, their impact on the music scene was undeniable. The Meters' music was more than just notes and beats; it was a source of inspiration for generations to come. Their rhythmic grooves became the foundation for hip-hop, with countless artists sampling their tracks. This influence solidified their legacy as pioneers of the funk genre. After the band's initial disbandment, George Porter Jr. pursued a solo career, showcasing his exceptional bass skills. The Meters experienced various reunions over the years, with special performances and tours celebrating their musical legacy. Their enduring popularity spoke volumes about their lasting impact. In 2018, The Meters received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to their significant contributions to music. Their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same year immortalized their place in music history. George Porter Jr. and The Meters revolutionized funk music with their unparalleled instrumental prowess and innovative grooves. Their journey from New Orleans to the global music stage left an indelible mark on the industry. Their legacy continues to live on through their timeless music and the artists they've inspired, solidifying their status as true legends of funk. Please join me this week as George Porter Jr shares his experiences and musical life with the legendary Meters. we are back…with one of the most important tributes… to the founding fathers of funk, The Meters. They created a unique sound blending funk, blues with a New Orleans Cajun vibe. Their history dates back to 1965, when keyboardist Art Neville recruited bassist George Porter Jr., drummer Joseph 'Zigaboo' Modeliste and guitarist Leo Nocentelli to form The Meters. They became the house band for Allen Toussaint label, Sansu Enterprises. In ‘69 they released "Sophisticated Cissy" and "Cissy Strut", both major R&B chart hits. After twelve years and ten studio albums, they disbanded in ‘79…but continued to perform in the next decades with different line ups. I will dig wider in their portfolio…besides their songs, I will present their side projects, collaborations, cover-ups by other bands and some Meters inspired jams. So ease back, get your gumbo in order and enjoy the funk….

They have influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, with Porter's heavy pockets and fat notes creating the rubbery bass lines behind anthems like “Cissy Strut” and “Just Kissed My Baby.” George's reputation with The Meters made him a highly coveted session bassist, which has landed him in the studio with David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Taj Mahal, and many other legendary artists. Notre héros d'aujourd'hui ne sort pas de l'ombre, ni n'explose à la face du monde. Art Neville était simplement un bon musicien. Aucun ne peut le nier, et ça c'est grand ! Joining the podcast today is actor, writer, director and longtime jazz fan Michael Imperioli, best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti on the HBO hit series The Sopranos, for which he won an Emmy in 2004. Imperioli's other onscreen credits include award-winning movies Goodfellas, Bad Boys, Lean on Me and Last Man Standing, as well as the Spike Lee productions Malcolm X, Jungle Fever and Summer of Sam, which he co-wrote and co-produced. In 2018, Imperioli published his first novel, The Perfume Burned His Eyes, which chronicled the life of a Queens teenager who moves with his broken family to Manhattan and goes on to befriend Lou Reed, a luminary of the 1970s downtown New York rock scene. Imperioli is an avid admirer of that historic musical era in New York City, and an enthusiastic champion of rock and roll in general. But he's also a passionate jazz fan and an active member of the Jazz Foundation of America, an organization that provides financial support, housing assistance and disaster relief to musicians in need. On October 19, he'll return to his duties as co-host —along with actor Danny Glover — of the Jazz Foundation of America's Loft Party in New York City, a concert benefiting JFA's lifesaving programs. It will feature performances by Wyclef Jean and The Pharoah Sanders Quartet, along with a tribute to Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and a celebration of New Orleans icons Dr. John, Dave Bartholomew and Art Neville. The drum legend Roy Haynes will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. If you're in the area and would like to support, you can buy tickets online at jazzfoundation.org. In this episode, Imperioli talks about the records that brought him to the jazz flame, his total infatuation with Charles Mingus and Ron Carter and the time he smoked a joint with Gil Evans outside the jazz club Sweet Basil. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brian-zimmerman/support

Featured guests NIKKI GLASPIE and NICK CASSARINO of THE NTH POWER, as well as an introspective chat with Oregon-based artist/entrepreneur CLAY McCABE (of ZIPPER RESCUE). I am lucky and honored to call each of these inspiring human beings my dear friends in real life. The music of The Nth Power often reaches me with an emotional impact that is unrivaled in the culture today, and in that resonant reaction, I know I am far from alone. Nikki and Nicky Cake were kind enough to make some time for separate interviews, conducted in the cozy confines of the legendary High Sierra Music Festival 2019, over the 4th of July weekend in Quincy, CA. Due to the hectic nature of their festival itineraries, which we discuss in detail, neither were able to sit down with me for the customary, career-spanning interview that we like to unveil here at the Upful LIFE, but I can assure you that in the future, I intend to wrangle both Nikki and Nick for all of the important historically-relevant rabbit holes we can tunnel. For now, I am grateful to have gotten 15 potent minutes with "The Evangelist" Nikki, and 25 introspective minutes with "The Master Prophet" Cassarino. Then, on the heels of that abundance we take a deep dive with Mr. Zips, Clay McCabe, most certainly a person of interest in his own right.   R.I.P. "POPPA FUNK" ART NEVILLE (12.17.37 - 7.22.19)    Before getting into the three interviews, we had to take a few moments to pay tribute to the dearly departed Art "Poppa Funk" Neville, co-founder of The Neville Brothers and The Meters, and a true patriarch of New Orleans funk music. The legendary singer/organist peacefully passed on July 22nd after a lengthy illness. Few people have had the impact on multiple generations of fans and genres quite like Art Neville. The proof is in the music, and the music never stops. Condolences to his son Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, nephew Ivan Neville, the entire Neville family and the great city of New Orleans.   NIKKI GLASPIE INTERVIEW at 20mins       Nikki Glaspie has always held space for people in her life, through music, love, compassion and overstanding the human condition in a profound way. Just before taking the stage with her old friend Jen Hartswick and a phenomenal band, Glaspie sits down to explore a number of topics in a small window of time. We start with how to approach an mammoth endeavor like The Nth Power's tribute to Marvin Gaye (which we featured on Episode 017), prepping a big band for a tribute like this one or those that have come before. This discussion takes place after Nth had reprised the Marvin-homage a night earlier at HSMF. I asked her about Nth's emotional impact on their fans- in essence their "brand"- and their uncanny ability to inhabit the culture's generational greats and interpolate iconic songbooks of socially/politically relevant material. More on how those lyrics and messages are as important today as they were forty years ago.  www.HaroldRobinsonFoundation.org From there, a bit on "being the change you want to see", the current trio formation of The Nth Power, and how they write and perform music that is intentional. We transition into some philosophical/cultural matters of importance, and to how people can be of service to communities. Nikki takes this opportunity to let folks know about the efforts with the HAROLD ROBINSON FOUNDATION, in SoCal, a non-profit organization that works toward inspiring and empowering children (primarily people of color) trapped in a cycle of poverty within the inner city. We finish up this brief but enthralling chat with a trip into the wayback machine that takes us to Vermont with the Godmother herself, Jen Hartswick, who's responsible for The Nth Power's entire existence, and the connection between these two women, plus Nate Edgar and Nick Cassarino. When these four touched souls take the stage together, Nikki is steadfast- the sum is far greater than the parts. Thank you Nikki Glaspie, you are love. In between interviews, enjoy The Nth Power's brand-new track "Reach Out", recorded live from Paste Studios in NYC.    NICK CASSARINO INTERVIEW at 45mins Glaspie's bandmate and spiritual brother Nick Cassarino is among the more thrilling frontmen who is doin' the damn thing out there in 2019. His mojo has another gear, and the manner and fashion in which he connects with fans when performing is already the stuff of legend. We jump right into the J-Ha/Nth Power High Sierra takeover, how that all goes down, and why having the Vermont homie Bryan McNamara on hand was especially important to Nick. We touch on some of the same topics I did with Nikki, with regard to the Marvin Gaye tribute, stepping into the shoes of the giants, and how that sort of passion and purpose rubs off on The Nth Power's original music. Nick explains how the songwriting and performances for the forthcoming LP Reverence are about "focusing the vibe" and making the songs have the emotional impact necessary to communicate the salient messages within them, and do so inspired by the greats who've come before them, but delivered in their own unique Nth voice.  Jen Hartswick & Nick Cassarino with Trey Anastasio and Christian McBride Nick then takes the opportunity to speak on his scintillating duo project with Jen Hartswick, who's album together Nexus made Upful LIFE's 18 Favorite Albums of 2018. So we riff a little a bit further on their Vermont roots that Nikki spoke of earlier, bound to cover just a little more ground. Nick then ties it all together, and announces that J-Ha/Nick and The Nth Power are actually touring together soon. Yep, these two magical artistic entities will spread the healing power of music from city to city each and every night. On the J-Ha tip, Nick reflects on the night that Trey Anastasio and Christian McBride performed the Nexus material with Nick and Jen in NYC. For the exciting end of the interview, Cassarino takes us through the situation when John Mayer decided to sit in with him at Cassarino's standing Sunday solo gig at NYC's Olive Tree. Truly a fascinating tale, and boy, is Nicky Cake ever the story-teller. When we find the time to take the deep dive on his career-arc, please believe I will be asking him to spin yarns like these for the full hour.  Giving Thanks & Praises to both Nikki and Nick from The Nth Power for making the time for these wonderful shares. LARGE UP The Nth Power bassist Nate Edgar, on general principle. He may not have been interviewed on this day, but he is. without question, THE MAN, no two ways about it.  The Nth Power LOVES You. CLAY McCABE aka MR.ZIPS INTERVIEW AT 1HR 15MINS  Behold KING ZIPS!! Get Familiar at www.ZipperRescue.com To close out Episode 021 we welcome CLAY McCABE, aka MR.ZIPS to the show for a wonderful conversation that took place late at night at the ViBE JUNKiE Studios in Oakland Ca in the beginning of summer. For some context, I met Clay in the jungles of Costa Rica during Envision Festival in February 2014, and it's been a joy to check out his journey in this life ever since. He is the owner and proprietor of ZIPPER RESCUE, a patented zipper fix-it product kit that has become an invaluable item at festivals around the world, and most certainly in Black Rock City at the end of every August. Clay takes us through his international travels and meditations as a young man and how those experiences, plus his late father's death, prompted him to take the reigns at the family business, Zipper Rescue.  In addition to being a festy celebrity of sorts for his handy product and his willingness to help hundreds of people at every event he frequents, from Burning Man to Global Eclipse Gathering to the event that has his heart and his roots, Oregon Country Fair, Clay is also an tremendous artist and sculptor, so we discuss his early days making art at OCF and how that culture has informed his work moving forward. We talk Da Vinci's Workshop at Burning Man 2016, and some of his primary intentions and philosophies in creating art. Clay also had a pivotal role in the building of OneDome, the interactive art experience and mixed reality playground in downtown SF that was my former place of employ. The ambitious startup endeavor, conceived and unleashed by many members of Clay and my shared festival family, unfortunately ran out of funding and abruptly closed earlier this summer, but at the time of this interview, we were still holdin' on, and frankly there's plenty to be proud of with regard to working with OneDome. All in all, a revealing discussion with an extremely unique and inspired fella who, like Nikki and Nicky Cake before him, I am honored and proud to call a friend in real life.    *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*    North Carolina emcee RAPSODY drops an absolute heater in “Ibtihaj”, featuring GZA and D'Angelo!! "Ibtihaj" is named after Ibtihaj Muhammed, an Olympic fencer who won the bronze in the 2016 games and was the first American Olympian to wear a hijab while participating. Rapsody interpolates GZA's timeless 1995 classic "Liquid Swords" on her track, with the undeniable staccato groove that is burned into our skulls from so many spins through the years. R&B Jesus hops on the chorus, and somehow, D manages to take the Genius refrain "When the emcees came...", Gospelize it and make it his own, then GZA himself hops on for the ultimate co-sign, the guest verse. Such a lovely surprise, and Rapsody certainly holds her own betwixt these icons.    )'( PLEASE SUPPORT *ABRAXAS DRAGON* ART CAR At BURNING MAN 2019!! *CLICK HERE* )'(      The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Tales of the Road Warriors

Bob Malone. In case you don’t know the name, I am happy to be the one bringing this remarkable and talented keyboard wizard into your orbit… There are some people you encounter in life who immediately stand out in some inexplicable way. You may have heard it described as the X Factor, or that “IT” factor. An aura. Bob has that. I still remember like  it was yesterday… several members of the National Academy of Songwriters (now The Songwriters Guild) had volunteered to help repaint their offices. Bob and I were among that group and so I was on the floor placing masking tape along the wall above the molding. Malone was coming from the other direction and we met in the middle where we struck up a conversation. Turned out he was a keyboard player. A new kid in town from New Jersey who like many of us , had trekked out to L.A. to seek their fame and fortune. We immediately struck up a friendship. Eventually, I ended up recording some demos for him (and with him) at my home studio in Venice and helped him get a steady gig at the Chimneysweep, where I was acting as entertainment coordinator. I played there on Sunday nights, myself. The Hal Show. Acoustic Sunday. Bob eventually started making a name for himself in L.A. as a music transcriber, singer/songwriter, arranger, session musician, and music supervisor.  He has performed and or recorded with living legends, and in fact he’s been touring with John Fogerty, a founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival, for the last decade. He’s opened for the Neville Brothers (recently, we said goodbye to Art Neville). On their last tour, Bob got to share the stage with Mr. Springsteen, himself. I wish I had more time to talk to Bob – – – When I finally caught up with him, he  was on his way back from a recording session on a new project. What else is new? Mr. Malone is ALWAYS working on something new. That’s why he’s always got such good stories! So, our conversation barely touched the tip of the iceberg. Talk a bout a road warrior? He was literally in his car during the entire conversation, so the  audio might have been a little funky in patches. Which is fitting, because Bob Malone really knows how to bring the funk! Some the topics we covered include: Old Bob Malone songs. New Bob Malone songs. A brand new video called Good People (and I’M in it!). Yay! … for about a second. The iconic accordion solo he before John Fogarty and the rest of the band break into Looking’ Out My Back Door Touring Europe  - Italy and Paris in particular. Shark week and the Sparkly Shark song by Bob’s wife, Karen Nash who is also a shellologist. Bob’s epic photos of the crowds taken from a stage-eye view An encounter with Jackson Browne while playing keyboards for Ricki Lee Jones (who I’ve seen naked - in my worst Jon Lovitz voice).  Hey, no biggie… it was the 70’s. Everyone sat in a hot tub naked back in the day. BOB MALONE LINKS AND RESOURCES THE OFFICIAL BOB MALONE WEBSITE - Go there. My guest today is Mr. George Porter Jr. George is best known for being the bassist for the “architects of funk” - The Meters, the funkiest band to ever come out of New Orleans and, for that matter, anywhere. His basslines get under your skin and won't let go. Along with Zigaboo Modeliste on drums, Art Neville on keys and Leo Nocentelli on guitar, The Meters invented a type of funk that has been widely copied (and sampled) for many years now.  The day this interview took place I was back in New Orleans recording on a couple of projects, and we just happened to be on one session together. I've known George for years and I mentioned how I started this podcast and wanted to interview him while I was in town for a few days. Knowing I was short on time, George graciously suggested that we do it that night after the session.  In the interview I ask George about his influences, what he looks for in a drummer, trivial questions on various Meters folklore, why Paul McCartney said George was his favorite bass player, Allen Toussaint sessions, the proper way to play “Cissy Strut”, unison guitar/bass lines, etc…OH…and we play a lot of stuff together. Hope you enjoy.  Recorded at the Parlor Studio, New Orleans, LA - Feb 2016. On a session- L to R- Shane Theriot (guitar), George Porter Jr. (bass), Johnny Vidacovich (drums) and Sonny Landreth (slide guitar) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

The keyboard player and singer's tenure with George Porter and Papa Grows Funk stemmed from his love of New Orleans R'n'B, particularly the triumvirate of Art Neville, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John. His years on Bourbon Street taught him the value of a timeless song. He brings these twin imperatives to bear on his latest album, “Central City,” recorded with an all-star lineup and released this spring. His early reluctance to live streaming has morphed into a full embrace of the possibilities of high quality online performance. Like any new medium, the virtual environment presents a unique set of challenges. Tune in as John takes on the challenge of the Troubled Men Podcast.
