The topic of our children's health has never been more important that it is right now. And us as Dads need to get involved. A complicated landscape of big Pharma, profit driven companies, mis-information, dis-information, wokeness, you name it - make the topic of our kids health a tricky topic. Should we vaccinate our kids or not, should we put our kid on ADHD medication or not, should we listen to CDC and the World Health Organization's guidance on pediatrics or not? It seems like you can't trust anything right now. Since the COVID pandemic, the credibility of our medical institutions has crumbled - and things that 2 years ago were labeled as conspiracy theory are now shown as fact. To help guide us through this important conversation - I wanted to bring on someone that I have connected with recently, and someone that I have tremendous respect for. Dr. Stanton Hom is a prenatal and pediatric chiropractor, West Point Grad and US Army Veteran, children's natural health advocate, owns a whole family practice in San Diego California, and host of the Future Generations Podcast. But most importantly, Stanton is a Dad. Stanton has been one of the most outspoken critics of the CDC's child vaccine schedule, has gotten his account banned from social media several times during the pandemic, but has refused to back down and bring light to what he believes wholeheartedly to be true. I'm super pumped for this conversation with Stanton as we dive into how us as Dads can, and need to, take a more active role in our children's health. Check out Stanton on Instagram HERE. Christopher Kolenda is a West Point Grad and a retired US Army Colonel, as well as the founder of the Strategic Leaders Academy, Kolenda helps leaders and their teams soar to new heights. During his military career, Kolenda, a combat leader and trusted adviser to three four-star generals and two undersecretaries of defense, was the first American to have both fought the Taliban as a commander in combat and negotiated with them in peace talks. He and his unit defied conventional wisdom in Afghanistan by motivating a large insurgent group to switch sides, the only example of such success in the 20-year history of the war. His unique warrior-diplomacy has been featured in New York Times bestselling books and media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, BBC, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He has written two books on the topic, Zero Sum Victory and Leadership: The Warrior's Art.  Kolenda is currently on the Fallen Hero Honor Ride, on which he is paying tribute to six paratroopers killed in action in Afghanistan under his command. He is biking 1700 miles from Nebraska to Arlington National Cemetery—to honor the men and raise funds for his unit's 800 veterans and their families, as well as bring awareness to the families of those lost in combat, and the emotional and cognitive struggles so many veterans face after their deployment ends. Over 7,000 American service members were killed in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. In the wars' aftermath, over 30,000 post-9/11 veterans have died by suicide. Kolenda's unit has lost more to suicide and substance abuse than were killed in combat, a sobering statistic Kolenda brings awareness to this September, National Suicide Prevention Month. Devin: As you look back at your career, what do you see as the superpower that has enabled you to be so successful?Donna: That superpower is an orientation to service and a desire to make a meaningful and measurable impact in the community. I live and serve that community.“Transportation is a formidable barrier to economic mobility and just about everything,” says Donna Matturro McAleer, executive director for the nonprofit Bicycle Collective. “Access to everything associated with that upward mobility and progress—whether it’s jobs, whether it’s food, whether it’s goods, health care, schooling—relies upon the ability to get around in an efficient way for an affordable price. And bicycles do that.”Working to create transportation equity, the Bicycle Collective accepts donated bicycles from people in the community, tunes them up and puts them in the hands of underrepresented communities with unsupported needs. “We repair, refurbish or recycle them with the focus on getting them in the hands of people who don’t have access to independent mobility,” Donna says.“We focus on newly arrived refugees, people coming out of substance abuse, income-eligible families, individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity,” she adds. Remembering that “helping any of us helps all of us,” Donna says the bicycle collective provides a significant social return on investment. “Communities with a habit of removing obstacles for different subsets of people tend to get better for everyone.”Donna shares the story of the Bicycle Collective’s founding:It got started in 2002, when a group of bicycle enthusiasts in Salt Lake City found a couple of children's bikes in a dumpster and they recovered those bikes, recognizing that there was really nothing wrong with them other than flat tires and needing a little chain grease to get that chain going around the cassette. They were like, “These are not consumable items, these are durable items. And there is some child out there that could really benefit from a bicycle.” If you think back to your days when you learned to ride a bicycle, the excitement, the adventure, the escape. That was really how it started.Donna is passionate about the individual and collective benefits of bicycles. “Cycling promises freedom and a sense of adventure. It’s practical. It’s affordable. It contributes to economic well-being, physical health, and emotional stability. It’s a simple, eco-friendly transportation option.”Every year, the Bicycle Collective receives about 5,200 donated bikes. “Those are bikes that might have ended up in a landfill,” she says. “Last year alone, we recycled more than 57 tons of material.”Teams triage the bikes upon arrival. “If we get in a bike and we evaluate it and say, ‘Hmm, probably is a lot of work or too expensive to repair this,” we’ll strip it down for parts, and we’ll make those parts available in our do-it-yourself shops, and then we recycle the rest.”The Bicycle Collective not only provides bikes to those who can’t afford them, but it also operates thrift stores in Utah where anyone looking for affordable transportation can buy one. “We are growing our digital presence online. Our online shop is open 24/7.”The pandemic idled one of the organization’s most successful programs. Donna explains:Pre-pandemic we had a very robust youth program throughout all our four shops and we really ran two programs. One was what we call an open shop, where we had young people in primarily between the ages of about ten and 16 to learn basic bicycle mechanics. They learned basic bicycle mechanics first by learning the parts of a bike, by learning how to strip it. So while they're in our shop, they're helping us strip bikes that are going to be recycled and put parts in our bins that are available for do it yourselfers. Over time we ran a—we call it a colored apron system—which was very much like a black belt system in the martial arts that at every increment of knowledge there was an opportunity to demonstrate that skill and work towards a carrot, which was a part or a component. When you reached up to 60 hours of time in the shop, they earned a bicycle that they then could rebuild for themselves. When COVID hit, obviously, the health and safety of our patrons and our program participants and our staff was paramount.Donna says the program starts again this summer. The other youth program she alluded to is a junior bike mechanic certification program. The eight to ten-week program qualifies kids to work as bike mechanics in bicycle shops. The Bicycle Collective works with 62 community partners to support refugees and other underserved populations. “These are the community partners such as the International Rescue Committee and Catholic Community Services,” Donna says. “Those two are two of the largest organizations that welcome incoming refugees into the state of Utah and help them get started in a new life as new Americans.”Not only does the Bicycle Collective provide bicycles to people in this community, but it also provides training, so they leave with the ability to keep their bikes running well.Donna is driven in her work by her superpower, a desire to make a meaningful and measurable impact in the community. How to Develop a Desire to Make an Impact As a SuperpowerDonna is an Army veteran who graduated from the elite military academy West Point. She credits her service with defining her superpower. When I was 17, I took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And I took that oath again when I graduated and when I was commissioned as an officer in the Army. And we take that oath every time we're promoted. I took that oath again when I was appointed to serve on the Defense Advisory Committee for Women in the Service. I take it very seriously; it's part of my DNA. Just because I no longer wear the uniform doesn't mean that obligation goes away. That obligation is for my lifetime.Years ago, using her superpower, Donna had the opportunity to coach a high school girls’ volleyball team. “I was surprised at what was being purported and promoted in the media. This is well in advance of the proliferation of social media. But for a lot of the young girls I coached, sexual allure was enshrined as the Rosetta Stone of confidence and self-esteem.”She wanted to help young women see new measures of success. “I thought if I could expose my young athletes to the women I went to West Point with in the very early years of West Point being open to women and the women I served with in the Army, those I served with, those that were my superiors, those that were in my units, that maybe my young athletes would see and learn of opportunities far beyond their current environment.”Donna wrote the book Porcelain on Steel, the Women of West Point’s Long Gray Line. It is a collection of biographies about women who graduated from West Point over the first 24 years it was open to women. It begins with a profile of Kathy Gerstein from the class of 1980, the first to include women. It ends with the story of her daughter, Sarah Gerstein, who graduated in 2007.With the book, Donna hopes to “open the aperture of that definition of success.”For those wishing to develop their desire to make a measurable impact in the community, Donna suggests three fundamental principles:Get out of your comfort zoneLearn from failureVolunteerBy following Donna’s example and advice, you can develop a desire to make a measurable impact in your community as a superpower to help you do more good. This post includes affiliate links that may provide commissions but that do not increase the price you pay. Alex Santiago, Seasoned Warrior, West Point Grad, MBA and Major US Army, trades war stories with host, Joseph Cabrera from their time at a small outpost in Afghanistan, called Wilderness. Alex says that trust is not earned, but bestowed which is why those that respect this gift can grow from it. Alex and Joseph talk about their time as young Leaders and discovering their rhythm on leading Teams, in extremely hostile environments, with limited resources. Much of their early molding came from working with special men, who reminded them about the burdens of leadership and how the job of a combat Leader was to manifest a plan worth dying for and that everyone deserves excellent Leadership. Although war can be tough, the forging of life-long relationships are second-to-none. Alex shares that many of the reasons we do the "impossible" is for no other reason than humanity- because you genuinely care about the person next to you. Alex also talks about what it means to be a "true professional" and using one's worth ethic to instill confidence within your Teams. Whether you realize it or not, those you lead are watching you, so put the work in and don't let them down.

January 6, 2022 is important for two reasons. First of all, it is the Christian celebration of Epiphany that celebrates the Magi's arrival from the East to honor the baby, Jesus. January 6, 2022, is also the first anniversary of the “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol, which the mainstream media attributes to the massive Trump rally held in Washington D.C. Kim highlights several questions each of us must ask: 1) How is it that the most powerful country on the face of the earth cannot keep a couple of hundred people, from fly-over country USA, from entering the U.S. Capitol? 2) Since when have Trump supporters shown up at an event dressed in black with gas masks and with milk to thwart the effects of tear gas? 3) Isn't the Capitol the people's house? 4) Has the mainstream media's coverage of the story been accurate and honest? 5) Why are individuals still in jail a year later and have not been charged with the crime of insurrection? 6) What happened to Due Process? 7) If Speaker Pelosi, who is in charge of Capitol security, cannot keep the U.S. Capitol safe, how can we trust her to keep the American people safe from threats from China and Russia? 8) Why were Republican Congressmen Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Jim Banks (R-Indiana) kicked off Pelosi's January 6th committee? Kim also notes that PBIs in Australia threaten to deport nine-time Australian Open Winner Novak Djokovic from Australia and not allow Djokovic to pursue his 10th Australian Open tennis title because Djokovic's medical exemption does not meet Australian bureaucrats criteria. The Chicago teacher's union marginalizes children's learning by voting to regress to online classes.  Pam Long, former Army Medical Services Corps Captain and West Point Grad, introduces her recent Op-Ed as the Best and Worst of Colorado Politics in 2021.         Pam's well-researched piece clarifies the chaos and confusion (intended?) of Colorado politics. How does a regulated three-hole sink improve your dining experience? Susan Kochevar, entrepreneur and owner of 88 Drive-In Theatre, explains that it doesn't. But the regulation for a three-hole sink empowers PBIs to harass, fine, and increase costs for everyday, hard-working Coloradans. And these regulations authorize PBIs to pick winners and losers. Susan explains that we must extricate ourselves from rules' perceived “safety”. The free market will address infractions of sub-standard products or services. The free market will determine which businesses are “essential” and which are not.

Despite his family’s best efforts to convince him otherwise, he knew Army was the only place for him. With both parents having attended West Point themselves, they wanted to make sure that Silva had come to the decision to attend on his own.A bit of a late-bloomer in college, Silva really hit the scene during his junior year. In 2019, he collected 30 ground balls and buried 39 goals. Silva followed up with a team-high 22 tallies and 15 ground balls in 2020, only to have the season cut short by coronavirus lockdowns in March.Despite being one of the nation's top players as a senior, his future in professional lacrosse was unclear. The United States passed a law that allows service academy graduates to play professional sports and delay their duty. However, with professional lacrosse not being considered a full-time profession, Silva relied on the help the administrators at West Point to make his dreams come true.In his first season with the Outlaws, Silva registered four goals in the five games the team played. His rookie stats include a hat trick against Connecticut in the season opener and a solo shot in the MLL Championship Game.We thank Miles Silva for his commitment to the country and for joining the podcast. You might recognize Kara Elise, host of celebrity wellness parties from her previous interview where she compared her previous relationships to various foods. Now, Kara has not only met her cheeseburger, but is engaged to him! West Point Grad, former NFL Draft Pick, and motivational speaker, Caleb Campbell is joining Kara on today’s episode and we are talking about their journey to finding themselves and then each other. What began as two single people who were on separate journeys has turned into a couple who are working together and have launched a podcast that is asking all the right questions. Between curating dinner parties to creating spaces for people to feel more understood, this couple is changing lives and encouraging people to lead their lives in a way that serves them. You have to be your own cheeseburger, because someone else isn’t the answer to your hunger. What we’re talking about Kara & Caleb’s Journeys To Finding Themselves, Then Each Other  Living A Life Unattached To “Things” The Importance Of Finding Value & Giving Value Kara & Caleb’s Journeys to Finding Themselves, Then Each Other Kara and Caleb’s journeys were similar in that they were both working on themselves in order to make space for the right person to come into their lives. One of the keys in that was for them to accept their lives where they were at that moment. Caleb describes it as a journey of where you are, accepting it and a journey of letting go. It’s about acceptance of your life and that if it were to never change, being ok with that.  Kara and Caleb attended the same writing workshop together and on day 1, Kara had decided she was content with her life as it was and Caleb opened up to everyone by crying. Both knew that they had to trust that the universe was for them and that being vulnerable would allow for inner healing.  Caleb’s former life involved the NFL, but it had not been about the NFL.  It had been a time of finding significance. Looking back, he realizes that by looking for significance, he wonders when he was actually robbed of it in the first place, needing to search for it.  Living A Life Unattached To “Things” As most couples do, Kara and Caleb have discussed money. Neither of them have felt it was a priority because it’s always been taken care of, but money is something we want to control, hold onto and figure out. The same can be said about eating disorders. It’s not about the food, but about feeling safe and in control. Both are used as coping mechanisms. Kara and Caleb don’t want to live life attached to “things” or things looking a certain way, whether it’s relationships, money or anything else. The Importance Of Finding Value & Giving Value Value begets value. Caleb shares that every time you give value, value will be returned to you, therefore you can make amazing things happen every single day by what you do. In order to bring value, you need to come from a place of operating out of the present and with a want to continuously grow and evolve.  Caleb and Kara have done the inner work and healing and want to offer it externally, which is why they launched their new podcast. It’s not about finding answers in life, but about asking the right questions. Every question leads to the journey of answering that question.  Are you asking the right questions of yourself? Stigma Podcast - Mental Health

Nick Padlo joins us for a very candid conversation about addiction, rehab, recovery, relapsing, and mindfulness.  Nick is a long-time friend, and he’s a West Point classmate from the class of 2003. After a successful career in the Army, he obtained an MBA from Stanford GSB and ultimately formed a pledge fund to acquire and launch the Pet Loss Center.  He drove the company to incredible growth. In the midst of all of the success he was having as an entrepreneur, he struggled with addiction.  But this isn’t a story of “entrepreneurship drove me to addiction” rather it’s a story of how personal struggles drove him to coping mechanisms which eventually led to addiction that impacted his ability to run his business. Nick ended up going to rehab, then going again about a year later.  After his second trip to rehab, instead of going to an IOP afterward, he took a trip to Southeast Asia to focus on something he knew he was weak at, which is mindfulness.  We spend time talking about the mindfulness facility he attended in Cambodia, what he learned there, what it was like on a daily basis and how it has changed his life. You can connect with Nick Padlo here: Nick’s LinkedIn HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: Nick shares his story of graduating from West Point, obtaining an MBA from Stanford and acquiring and growing his first business, the Pet Loss Center. Nick was very successful with his first business, but he was in an unhealthy place in life.  He walked away from his startup in 2019 and went to rehab for the first time.  After rehab, he walked back into the same personal life and relapsed quickly.  The relapse was far worse than the first time he needed to go to rehab. In our conversation, Nick highlights how he made the decision to go to rehab the first time.  He talks about how the first time he went to fix himself to be better for a relationship.  Which wasn’t the right reason.  He learned a lot of good things, but his motivation wasn’t in the right place. Nick goes on to talk about his motivation for attending rehab the second time.  This time he decided to go solely for himself.  This time it was “death or rehab” and he knew it was his last shot.  He went in feeling like this was his last shot, and he was doing it for himself. During his second stint in rehab, he put a lot more thought into the training, education, and self-reflection because he was doing it for himself.  He says that the second time he really “felt his way through it” versus the first time where he “thought his way through it.” Nick explains that before rehab, he never considered going to yoga, or practicing mindfulness.   We talked about how we both viewed mindfulness practices as something that wasn’t for us, before we went to rehab.  We also discussed what we learned about mindfulness in rehab and how that changed our views of mindfulness practices. After rehab, instead of going to a sober home or some other traditional after care program, Nick decided to go to Southeast Asia and dig deep on mindfulness practices.  He realized that mindfulness was the thing he was weakest at, and going to a sober home and spending a little bit of time talking about all the things he learned in rehab wasn’t what he needed so he went to a place where he could do a deep dive on the thing he was weakest at, which was mindfulness. He made the decision to go to this mindfulness training program by asking questions like “What is it that I’m missing?” and “Where is the best place to learn that?”  He realized the mindfulness was a big weakness for him, so he looked for a place to focus on mindfulness. Here is the program he attended: Vagabond Temple in Cambodia Nick walked us through a typical day at the mindfulness camp in Cambodia, and what he got out of it.  We talked about the mindfulness practices, how he learned to be mindful, and what kind of diet they encouraged him to be on to amplify his mindfulness journey. We talked about Nick’s recovery plan now that he is back from Cambodia, and what he plans to do to remain sober now that he’s back in “the real world.” We talked about Nick’s future plans and how he wants to take his experience as CEO of a high growth business, his new found sobriety and his focus on mindfulness and apply those experiences to find a way to work or build something that delivers the learnings he obtained over the last few months, to others, including other entrepreneurs. Mark Valley is a West Point Grad, Army Veteran, successful actor, and Dad. You may know him from his numerous credits including Boston Legal, Pasadena, Keen Eddie, CSI, and Feud. He talks openly about growing up on the Canadian Border of upstate New York to a football coach Dad, his time in the Army, his first acting job with John Schlesinger and Anthony Hopkins, and fathering a child at an early age. Mark is an incredibly charming guy who is quick with an impression and tells a great story. He tells the story of how his 16 year old daughter comes to live with him in Venice, California at a time when he is a hugely recognizable actor during his stint on Boston Legal. How it didn't become a TV show unto itself is crazy. He's a great example of how to handle the responsibility of fatherhood and a shining example to all of you out there who are dealing with becoming a Dad at such an early age.
