Health safety measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic have shaken the American economy. Long term staples like indoor dining have taken a hit, while new opportunities have emerged in contactless services, telecommunications, and ecommerce. Just how have America's entrepreneurs responded to these challenges and opportunities? Today, I've brought in John Haltiwanger to discuss. John is the Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland. Last year, he was awarded the Global Entrepreneurship Research Award for his statistical work in studying firm dynamics.

Today's episode of the Building Bridges podcast is my conversation with Tyler Cowen, an economist, director of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, blogger at Marginal Revolution, and host of the podcast Conversations with Tyler.I first met Tyler back in 2019 when my colleague Zineb Mekouar and I spent a few days in Washington, DC to promote my book Hedge and to connect with John Dearie's Center for American Entrepreneurship. We had lunch with Tyler and his colleague and co-author Alex Tabarrok in a Chinese restaurant near George Mason University. Most of our conversation that day was about exchanging ideas and impressions about the relative situation of America, Europe, and the rest of the world.Since then I've kept reading everything I could find about the political situation in the US, the state of the transatlantic relationship, and recently how COVID-19 was impacting the distribution of power and wealth across the world. Then last year, I realized something: Americans are, by far, the most inspiring contributors to this conversation—yet alas they're mostly speaking about America, leaving the rest of the world untouched, uncommented on, almost undocumented! In this context, how about launching a podcast series in which I'd interview American thinkers, but having them focus the conversation on Europe?Fast forward to today: my 2020 idea has morphed into the Building Bridges podcast which I'm co-hosting with my wife Laetitia Vitaud. The value proposition of our podcast is to provide a platform for anyone who has interesting ideas to share with our vast community of “unapologetic globalists” (to quote my recent guest Chris Schroeder). Not everyone that's part of this roster has much to say about Europe. But whenever I catch one who does, I make sure to focus our conversation on that very subject—and I must say Tyler is one of our recent guests who has the most to say and to share about the Old Continent! And so if you're interested in Europe, economics, libertarianism, or the prospects of various other regions in the world, I urge you to give my conversation with Tyler a listen. Here's what you'll hear:What Tyler likes and dislikes about Europe, and the various countries he's lived in or traveled to here (which is most of them!).Why he thinks Europe is one of the least fragmented regions in the world—which is the exact opposite of how I view Europe! Why Americans should be present and invest in India if they want to retain some influence in the future. What advice he would give to young Europeans and young Americans who want to prepare themselves for our coming world. Why he expects Europe to remain a wealthy and prosperous region, despite, well, everything. And many, many more interesting topics and ideas. This podcast and the related article were originally published at Around Europe w/ Tyler Cowen. Lobbying. Startups Across Borders. Biden's Global Tax Reform. as part of my newsletter European Straits (which is about the Entrepreneurial Age, viewed from Europe).Follow Building Bridges on Twitter! You can listen to all our podcasts on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Also Building Bridges is part of a network of Substack newsletters, which you may want to discover: there's Laetitia Vitaud's Laetitia@Work (about the future of work, with a feminist perspective), and my own European Straits (about the Entrepreneurial Age, viewed from Europe).(Credit: Franz Liszt, Angelus ! The Agenda
On this episode, I speak with Rebecca Lovell. Rebecca holds an MBA from Foster, since she graduated her career has included roles with the City of Seattle office of economic development, Geekwire, the Northwest Entrepreneur's network, and Alliance of Angels. She teaches in the Technology Management MBA program at Foster, is a mentor for Techstars and the Female Founders Alliance and is a board director for the Washington Technology Industry Association. She also currently serves as the Chair of the national Center for American Entrepreneurship. When Rebecca and I sat down for this conversation in late February of 2020 -- as the threat of Coronavirus was beginning to become apparent but before the pandemic was declared and so much in-person work went remote -- she was the Executive Director of Create33, a membership organization and "founder-center" for high-growth technology entrepreneurs backed by Madrona Venture Group. She has since been named the CEO of Denali Financial Consulting which provides experienced, strategic, financial and operating leadership for growing companies. Because of the rapid shift to everything-from home, this was a conversation that got stuck in my edit queue. Rebecca and I discussed her work at Create33 along with other in-person activities and I wasn't quite sure how much would be relevant amidst the pandemic shutdowns. As I worked on editing it, I realized that so much of Rebecca's insights and advice are valuable to anyone interested in the venture and startup ecosystem here in Seattle. I did edit out some parts of the conversation that were no longer relevant. Rebecca and I talked about her experience in the MBA program, with the venture and startup community, and advice for students interested in pursuing a career that may involve working with startups. I hope you'll enjoy my conversation on careers and professional life with Rebecca Lovell. Rebecca shared the following events: Founders Live F-Bomb Breakfast Club WTIA Collaboration Institute - Ion And we both talked about the tremendous resource that is Geekwire, especially the Geekwire 200, a list of Pacific Northwest startups that are popular and trending among key online communities, and their Recent Fundings list. Rebecca shared so much great advice for students looking to engage with start-ups in Seattle. As we've heard so many of my guests say, "coffee meetings" are critical to building your network, and while we may still be a few months away from resuming in-person meetings, our students are having plenty of luck connecting with people over video conference for these informational interviews. Volunteering and getting involved in events that cater to the startup community, from conferences to meetups, again, many being held virtually because of the pandemic is a great way to meet and connect with people in the startup community. Thinking about the right time in a startup's life to engage with the company, for many tech startups, most of their hires are going to be on the engineering team until they get some seed or series a funding and have a headcount that has crossed into the double digits. And that hiring is likely going to be just-in-time. We also talked about how to assess startups as a prospective intern or employee, the importance of considering the type and quality of experience you will get, along with the executive mentorship opportunities, so you want to interview the company as much as they are interviewing you.

If you want to support the show, you can buy it wherever audiobooks are sold. Links are also in the show notes. Now on to my guest for today, John Dearie. If you're an entrepreneur or venture capitalist or angel investor, this one is a must listen to. John Dearie is founder and president of the Center for American Entrepreneurship, a research, policy, and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policies that promote entrepreneurship. John has made a career of studying and working on policies and legislation to grow economies. After the Great Recession ended in 2008, John set out to understand why the economy was not bouncing back as quickly as everyone had hoped. That led him to leaving his job as CEO of the Financial Services Forum to founding his own organization dedicated to the promotion of entrepreneurship. According to the latest research, entrepreneurship and startups are one of the biggest factors in growing an economy and in creating more jobs. Yet until recently, legislators in D.C. didn't have anyone seriously advocating for and teaching them about the importance of entrepreneurship. The legislation passed in response to Covid is just one example of the short-sightedness; while many businesses have been helped by the Paycheck Protection Program, a lot of startups and new businesses were left scratching their heads on how it could help them. John and his group have helped educate legislators on this and many other issues. Whether you're an entrepreneur, thinking about a startup, an investor, or even if you're anyone concerned about the future of the American economy, this is information you're going to want to hear. Now let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to TakeIf there's one takeaway from this discussion with Dearie, it's that we all have to make our voices heard. Dearie's organization has stepped up to be a conduit and provide expertise and advocacy for entrepreneurs and startups, but they need everyone's input to help them set their agenda. Armed with the research that shows we have a big part to play in recharging our economy, our voices are more important than ever. Here are some actions you can take: Get educated about policies and legislation that affect startups. Learn the research that points to the importance of nurturing entrepreneurship to grow the economy and share this information with the public and policymakers. Reach out to your local representative or volunteer to serve on a citizens' board to help make an impact locally and make sure the views of entrepreneurs are represented. Sign up for lists to be notified of hearings at the local, state, or national level. Advocacy organizations are always looking for people to come testify so lawmakers can better understand their challenges. John Dearie joined me for Part 2 of our discussion on the dire need for more entrepreneurs in our country, and how his work at the Center for American Entrepreneurship is bringing this awareness to our lawmakers in Washington, DC, and how he's creating energy and opportunity for communities around the country to join in the effort as well. It's been a pleasure to get to know John in the last year, and I appreciate his leadership on this important topic. We need more entrepreneurs! Thanks also to show sponsor, Hunt Club.

John Dearie joined me to discuss the critical need for more entrepreneurs in our country, to drive forward more economic growth, innovation and jobs in our country. He is currently the President at the Center for American Entrepreneurship in Washington, DC. John founded this organization in 2017 as a nonpartisan research, policy, and advocacy organization. CAE’s mission is to engage policymakers in Washington, and at state and local levels, regarding the critical importance of entrepreneurs and start-ups to innovation, economic growth, and job creation – and significantly improve new business formation, survival, and growth.John has studied the history of how economic development, job and innovation growth, and entrepreneurship has evolved in our country, and has pulled together an amazing group from across the country to advise CAE in its efforts. We now have the first ever caucuses in both houses of Congress on the topic of Entrepreneurship, which has led to much more energy around new key pieces of legislation to spur more entrepreneurship and innovation.Prior to CAE, John was the CEO of Financial Services Forum, a policy organization formed by the CEOs of the largest US financial institutions. He also was at the Federal Reserve Bank in NY for almost 10 years, including several years as an officer of the bank.John and I hadn't discussed it previously, but he attended a rival school in Indiana, Notre Dame. In fact they often don’t claim Indiana as their location. Thankfully we don’t play them in football – but we usually have our way with them in hoops. This conversation is important to everyone in this country as we look ahead to the profound changes in our economy in coming years, and how we create more prosperity and opportunity for as many people as possible.
Ian Hathaway has been a founder, an investor, an author, a professor and an advisor, just to name a few roles he’s played. He’s currently an executive at Techstars, a fellow at Brookings Institution, a board member at the Center for American Entrepreneurship and recently co-authored a book, The Startup Community Way, with his friend, Brad Feld. Ian is the type of thinker, connector and advisor that we need in our country to help us better understand entrepreneurship, investment and how we transform our economy to one more focused on innovation.I am so excited to share our chat with you as Ian can cover a lot of ground. We both love data and have had some fun geeking out a bit lately on some economic and jobs data. This is part 1 of 2 - enjoy!
The best way to find your next client or sale is through someone you already know. Learn how to maximize your network to grow! Alex Tabarrok, Economics Chair at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, also came on to discuss his surprising research about regulation and economic dynamism. He set out to ask "Is Regulation to Blame for the Decline in American Entrepreneurship?" and ended up making the Libertarian's case for big government. Then Erik Nielsen, Chief Economist at UniCredit, joined to recap a busy week for geopolitics and the global economy. Erik talked through the evolution of the West's sanctions on Russia, the war in China that he (and the rest of Europe) wished President Trump would fight and what he loved about Jay Powell's first news conference.
