Every generation needs someone who will care enough, and who is selfless enough to educate them on the hard things of this world. And while often many youth think they need to turn to athletes and artists for inspiration it's people like Omari Ajanaku who remind them that there are people in your own community to look to for not only resources but inspiration.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.05.326256v1?rss=1 Authors: Lurz, K.-K., Bashiri, M., Willeke, K. F., Jagadish, A. K., Wang, E., Walker, E. Y., Cadena, S., Muhammad, T., Cobos, E., Tolias, A., Ecker, A., Sinz, F. Abstract: Deep neural networks (DNN) have set new standards at predicting responses of neural populations to visual input. Most such DNNs consist of a convolutional network (core) shared across all neurons which learns a representation of neural computation in visual cortex and a neuron-specific readout that linearly combines the relevant features in this representation. The goal of this paper is to test whether such a representation is indeed generally characteristic for visual cortex, i.e. generalizes between animals of a species, and what factors contribute to obtaining such a generalizing core. To push all non-linear computations into the core where the generalizing cortical features should be learned, we devise a novel readout that reduces the number of parameters per neuron in the readout by up to two orders of magnitude compared to the previous state-of-the-art. It does so by taking advantage of retinotopy and learns a Gaussian distribution over the neuron's receptive field position. With this new readout we train our network on neural responses from mouse primary visual cortex (V1) and obtain a gain in performance of 7% compared to the previous state-of-the-art network. We then investigate whether the convolutional core indeed captures general cortical features by using the core in transfer learning to a different animal. When transferring a core trained on thousands of neurons from various animals and scans we exceed the performance of training directly on that animal by 12%, and outperform a commonly used VGG16 core pre-trained on imagenet by 33%. In addition, transfer learning with our data-driven core is more data-efficient than direct training, achieving the same performance with only 40% of the data. Our model with its novel readout thus sets a new state-of-the-art for neural response prediction in mouse visual cortex from natural images, generalizes between animals, and captures better characteristic cortical features than current task-driven pre-training approaches such as VGG16. Today, Andy talks with the brilliant musician most widely known by chart-topping artists themselves: Bashiri Johnson. Bashiri has recorded and/or performed with artistic legends including Beyonce, Madonna, Whitney Houston, the Rolling Stones, Michael Bolton, Cher, Duran Duran, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Barry Manilow, and Michael Jackson. Growing up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY in the 1960s and 70s, Bashiri was a talented risk-taker, self-described as “always in motion, never still.” Since he first started formally playing percussion—as opposed to jamming out on chairs and desks—in his freshman year of high school, Bashiri has played everywhere he could. In fact, Bashiri was so driven to perform, he even snuck backstage at a Miles Davis concert to see Mtume—then asked for percussion lessons. As luck had it, Mtume agreed to hang out with Bashiri, which led to a three year mentorship that served to launch the rest of Bashiri's nonstop creative lifestyle for decades to come. Not only does Bashiri explore his near-meditative approach to his “first listens,” but he describes some of his favorite memories at length, including adding a twist while recording “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross, recording on a Miles Davis song, performing live with Aretha Franklin at Radio City Music Hall, and working alongside the iconic artist, Michael Jackson. In his characteristic candor, Bashiri reveals the key personality traits that drove him to share what he loves most with the world. … and so we kick over into a new year, 2015. I keep a black moleskin with all of my various projects, initiatives, goals, and hair-brained schemes in it. I'd say we got through quite a few last year, from a revamped website to some new equipment, and finally to building a makeshift stage and video studio down in the secret underground bunker we call "Indy In-Tune Studio B." This year, the goals are fewer, and possibly less-ambitious. Put simply, my goal this year is to be as busy as humanly possile. Specifically, I want to be at 250 podcasts, 50 mini concerts, and as much archived on-air fun as I can accumulate under the belt by this time next year. Why? Because it has not escape my attention that after 9 years, I should be coming up on episode #450, and in the past two years that veritable conucopia of weelkly shows that have popped up (Free Beer Express, Brother Brother, Chris Brake Show, DoIt Indy, et al.), and some of them are already approaching their 100th episode. That part of my brain that's ruled by numbers tells me that this is unacceptable. I am the longest-standing podcaster in Central Indiana, I should have an episode count that inspires awe. So if anything, as I've always said, I love the fact that shows like those come along, since they make me step up my game. 2015 kicks off with our third visit from the great Bashiri Asad, this time in support of his brand new release, "Bashiri Asad Presents the Gil Suite: A Toast to Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson." This is an amazing album he has put together as part of his "Year of Tributes" (more on that during the interview) and features some top-notch talent from around our scene including, but not limited to, Brandon Meeks, Devon Ashley, Justin Brewer, Rob Dixon, Nick Gerlach, Max Allen, Phil Geyer, and Ashton Kleeman. He joined us in the studio with guitarist John Fell where he gave an impromptu acoustic set of numbers spaning all of his releases. How's that for kicking the year off with a bang? Links referenced in the show: Bashiri Asad can be found here: | | The first three tracks were recorded live on the air in the studio and are presented in their original raw format, just they way they aired -- mostly because I'm not a producer. Bashiri is accompanied by on guitar for these tracks. Apologies for the webcam blips, beer bottle clanks, and awe-inspired whispering in the background. Acknowledging that each of us has a priceless gift that we must harness and share with the world, Bashiri has come to define his sound as “Indy-Soul”. From shoo-wop style singing groups and classical vocal training, to performances local and abroad, his vocal prowess has been growing into the soul-stirring entity it is known as today. The influences of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding echo in his performance, and those coupled with his own strength and passion have come together to create soul music. Seeking to join the ranks of other indie-soul artists looking to breathe new life into the scene, Bashiri has begun to make a name for himself not just in the Circle City, but around the country. Bashiri's infectious passion for the art of music and authenticity in performance is making him a familiar name on the independant music scene. Humble in his approach, relentless in his delivery, you have to experience it to truly understand. “Music is my weapon of choice, what's yours?”
Let this be a lesson to all of my musician friends, and anybody who asks me for an opinion about music. I am mostly-incapable of doing reviews, critiques, or criticisms of music. I wish I could, but in case you haven't noticed by now, I love music and cant for the of me offer a negative opinion about anybody's songs, or say anything disparaging about anybody that puts their heart and soul into a composition -- therefore I wouldn't begin to call anything I write a "review." Now, I am perfectly capable of offering a deconstructive or comparative analysis of your music (have to do something with all those music theory and appreciation courses I took in college), or I can give you a nice promotional write up in the blog (courtesy of five years working for a marketing company), but that's about all the credibility you're going to get from me. I don't pretend to be a critic, or an expert of any kind on this show. I aspire to be nothing more than a geeky fanboy with a microphone and very amateur production values who obsesses over local, independent music. Case in point, my old friend, Bashiri Asad emailed me a couple of weeks ago and asked if I would do a review of his new album (which I had already heard and loved, by the way). Of course I told him I'd write up a nice blog post to promote it, but wouldn't it be much more fun if we got together for drinks, played some tracks, and talked about it for an hour or so? Thankfully, he agreed. You'll probably remember Bashiri from Show #065, when I referred to him as an up-and-coming talent in the local scene. Since then he's cut two albums, broken out regionally, toured the east coast, and played with some big names in the hip hop, soul, and R&B circles ... so for once I was right. While the Heart Spoken project we promoted on that show was more of a hip hop/soul hybrid, his latest album, I am One, is more of the classic crooner meets modern sounds variety. Six simple tracks (plus a bonus tune) do a great job of showcasing the diversity in both his voice and composition, going a long way towards explaining why he has no trouble recruiting some of the best talent in the business to back him up. Whether you're catching him in a jazzier setting with Xenobia Green, in a studio setting doing something a bit more contemporary or electronic, or branching out by incororating a little spoken word or hip hop in his songs, you're sure to hear a treat from this unique talent. Marion Lombardi and I are really onto something special. Each day we communicate and talk about the multitude of talent we have come across. Obviously, the main goal of what we do here is to expose artists (particularly up-and-coming ones) to a broader audience. Secondary to that, however, is the idea of introducing audiences to styles of music that they may not be overly familiar with. Granted the majority of our guests are rock bands or singer/songwriters -- just by the nature of their prominence around the city -- but, once in a while, we get the chance to diverge into the realms of jazz, R&B, and in the case of this week's guest, soul. Now, of course we're all familiar with at least the core of soul music, however I was shocked to find, when doing a bit of research of the interview, there are no less than a dozen different varieties of soul music. The more modern forms, particularly those that incorporate contemporary influences like hip hop, are not something I was familiar with all. I've mentioned several times before, as a middle-aged white suburban male, I don't listen to much hip hop, beyond the mainstream stuff, since much of it doesn't speak to me personally. I suspect many of you out there are in a similar position. I think we all, however, have a great respect for "good music" played by "great players," and there are obviously many examples of the genre that I do appreciate, particularly those that address universal themes and emotions -- the way Bashiri Asad's does. Like most forms of music, soul has absorbed elements of many different styles over the decades: funk, jazz, and most recently hip hop. Bashiri skillfully embraces all of these influences, occasionally mixing them; other times keeping them separated. The core of his music, and the element that really helped me to identify with him, however, was what he offhandedly termed, "music that is pleasing to the soul." Sure, I enjoy rocking out with a good metal band, or quietly studying a jazz or classical piece, but there was something very fulfilling about just kicking back with a couple glasses of wine that night and just letting Bashiri's voice (and the work of some of Indy's finest players) wash over me. I suggest all of you get out and experience this as well. Links referenced in the show: Bashiri Asad can be found here: | | | . His "Heart Spoken" project (where all of tonight's tracks are taken) was produced by who also acts as MC on the album. His band, Xenobia Green, has an EP coming out soon and combines musicians from many fine local bands. Bass player Brandon Meeks is also known for fronting his own Drummer , plays with many great artists around town. Chicago-born keyboardist is known throughout the gospel, R&B, and jazz circles in Indy. Reggie Bishop is one of the great treasures in Indianapolis' jazz, hip hop, R&B, and electronica circles, where he is a sought-after producer and keyboard player. He occasionally sits in with Xenobia Green, including the night this interview was recorded. Bashiri counts the in Lousivlle, KY as his favorite venue to play thus far.
