This week, Izzy and Murtada highlight three films with a shot at Best Actor/Actress. First, a look at HARD TRUTHS, the latest collaboration from Mike Leigh and Marianne Jean-Baptiste that critics adore but has had trouble picking up wins from other awards bodies. Will Jean-Baptiste take home the BAFTA and secure the Oscar nomination? Next, they discuss Pamela Anderson's unexpected and vulnerable lead turn as the titular Last Showgirl. Does the film have the juice to propel her to a Best Actress nomination? Finally, they attempt to unpack the ostensibly complex persona of Bob Dylan and Timothee Chalamet's highly regarded performance in A Complete Unknown. Will the Academy's musical biopic fetish push him over the line with Best Actor? Mojo: The Meaning of Life & Business

Do you have a mentor or coach to help guide you through life or business? "The greatest and most successful people have coaches." This is a saying that one of my coaches uses very often and shows it by pointing out how some of the biggest names in sports and film & stage have multiple coaches to help them grow. Think about it for a second - if you're an athlete, you have your coaches who tell you when to swing or stretch a double into a triple. You have your coaches who tell you when to go for the field goal or go for it on 4th down. If you're an actor, you need your coaches to help you have the right "voice" for the part - whether it is an accent, a louder voice for the people in the back of the theater to hear you or how to come off on camera - the voice is important. But it's also about the acting itself. We wouldn't have actors that win the Academy Award for Best Actor/Actress if they weren't any good, right? How many of those actors do you think do it alone? The same is true in life and business. We all need people - formally AND informally - to be there to give us guidance and support us in our goals and dreams. We need people to show us the "shortcuts" to get us where we want to be and not be lost trying to figure it all out. Having the right people in your corner is key to your success and growth - whether it is in your personal life or professional - so that you can reach your dreams. Knowing who to have in your corner though as that guide is really important as you do not want to have someone that may not be ideally suited for your situation. So, how do you find the right person? It's a bit like trying on shoes - a lot of testing, but when you find that pair that fits, you don't let it go. It's the same when you find a mentor or coach that meshes with you and your situation - you never want to let them go either because the more success you have in what you're doing, you know they're seeing it too and celebrating with you. If you are looking for a business mentor/coach, perhaps we should be speaking as that is what I do - and love helping my clients find those breakthroughs and new opportunities to make even more opportunities happen down the road! More detailed notes on the films Faithspotting has covered are available at https://revkennydickson.com/ Best Actress Nominations: Viola Davis     Ma Rainey's Black Bottom    Faith elements: Exploitation of others, either by race or gender or other reasons.  This is addressed by the call and teaching to love others as self, and do unto others as one would have one do.  Also the dangers of pride and arrogance. Note: One element that is in the film that we did not mention in the episode is holding or expressing anger at God.  Where God is in the midst of our suffering.    Andra Day      The U. S, vs. Billie Holiday Faith Elements: The responsibility of leaders and government to serve as shepherds to members of the community:  Group, City, State, Nation. Also teaching regarding non-exploitation.   The need to fill voids,The loss, wounds, pain with things that lead to healing not just masking pain.    Vanessa Kirby        Pieces of a Woman Faith Elements: *  The place others offer in healing and regaining wholeness. Not transfering anger and pain from losses onto others.    Frances McDormand      Nomadland Faith Elements:  *  Healing Poser of Community and sharing. (See the Promising Young Woman/Nomad episode notes for more details)   Carey Mulligan *     Promising Young Woman Faith Elements:  The cost of revenge- returning hate rather than love and accountability. (See episode notes for more details. ) * All three of these films address working through loss, grief, and pain, rather than getting stuck.  All demonstrate the need for community to assist in that journey, but the individual must travel through the valley of pain, saddness and loss yet as Psalm 23 and others teach, s/he does not walk through the valley alone.    Best Actor Nominations: Riz Ahmed     Sound of Metal Faith Elements:  Faith amidst loss- Overcoming brokeness and dissapointment even if it requires change to ones life and direction. The transformative power of community.    Chadwick Boseman   Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Faith Elements  (See Above)   Anthony Hopkins     The Father Faith Elements: Finding strength and patience  to stay in relationships, serve, and love, especially when trials come- Particularly when the loved one's personality changes.   Gary Oldham      Mank Faith Elements: The Purpose and need of humility as taught throughout the Old and New Testaments. The Dangers of pride and arrogance.  Using talents for good rather than selfish desire. (For more details see the faith notes for the Mank episode)   Steven Yeun    Minari Faith Elements: Obligation to serve community and put welfareof others above one's own desires.  Shepherding means knowing the needs and capacity of others.

We’ve previewed and profiled this movie in our ep 88 p2 “More Oscar Contender Trailers” episode. It’s also a film we’ve profiled in our Oscar Race Update (ep 81). So you’ve been thoroughly primed for this massive review, and if you have yet to see this film, we give you your money’s worth with this non-spoiler section. The Cast & Crew section has fun with the viral video stardom of Bo Burnham, and we wax poetic on his stand-up comedy career. Then it’s a Bo Burnham quote fest in Also Mike’s production profile. Then the movie’s specs showcase some huge critics scores, and we break down the potential for an Oscars campaign by A24. The non-spoiler review bumps up our usual Oscar Lens throughout our review of the production values and performances. We both see some serious potential for this film to gain momentum with the Academy, and we do make some bold predictions. Then we have way too much fun asking a question brought to us by the Casual Cinecast, where we try to pinpoint what other film(s) this movie reminds us of. The spoiler music plays, and we break down the plot in all its awkward glory. We cannot ignore the dramatic weight of this substantive script as we try to get you to jump onto this bandwagon with us. It’s only August, but we’re getting legitimate Oscars contenders. Go back and listen to our other OSPs including Black Panther, A Quiet Place, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Hereditary, The Incredibles 2, Sorry to Bother You, and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Black Panther Review & Breaking Down "Best Actor/Actress" Nominees This week, we're down a co-host, as Fox 32 Chicago's Jake Hamilton has to deal with a tooth problem. (The way he tells it, he chipped his tooth saving a bevy of adorable puppies, but we're guessing that's an embellishment.) So, AwardsBlend co-hosts Sean O'Connell and Fox 5 DC's Kevin McCarthy hold down the fort, and they kick off their discussion with a spoiler-free review of Ryan Coogler's new Black Panther. AwardsBlend dives into the meat of the Oscar race, and this week, Sean and Kevin analyze the Best Actor and Actress races... to see if they actually are races, at all. While both co-hosts think that Gary Oldman is a lock to win Best Actor for his work as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright's Darkest Hour, they split on Best Actress. Kevin feels like Frances McDormand has Best Actress in the bag for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Sean, on the other hand, thinks that momentum might be shifting away from McDormand, and that Sally Hawkins could steal some thunder if The Shape of Water starts to dominate on Oscar night.
