A Delta flight flipping over while landing in Toronto. A missing commuter plane in Alaska. A medical transport jet crash in Philadelphia. A catastrophic midair collision over Washington, D.C. Plane accidents seem to be happening at a greater frequency than ever before. But is that actually the case? And what, if anything, do these disasters tell us about the state of aviation safety?Today on Lever Time, Senior podcast producer Arjun Singh sits down with Bill McGee, senior fellow for aviation at the American Economic Liberties Project and one of the country's foremost experts on the airline industry, to discuss the recent crashes and the state of airline safety regulations. The backbone of aviation safety in the United States of America is The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), an organization that oversees aerospace safety and efficiency and is being targeted by President Donald Trump's federal layoffs. But McGee says the FAA has been understaffed for years and has long been called “The Tombstone Agency” around Washington due to the organization's tendency to only respond with a full investigation when a tragedy occurs. To read an unedited transcript of the episode, click here.  ––Need a new job in 2025? On this week's episode of Lever Time, David Sirota is joined by Bill McGee, a Senior Fellow for Aviation and Travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, and investigative journalist Maureen “Moe” Tkacik to discuss how the air travel industry has been transformed from the paragon of engineering and innovation into cost-cutting, regulation-dodging piggy banks for Wall Street investors. Last Friday, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 experienced what could have been a deadly disaster when a plug door was ripped from the plane mid-flight. Luckily, no one was killed and there were only a few minor injuries. But this incident spotlights what critics say is a systemic problem in airline manufacturing and oversight: years of cutting costs, spurred by the Wall Street-ification of companies like aircraft manufacturer Boeing. This past week, The Lever reported that employees at Spirit AeroSystems, Boeing's main subcontractor for plug doors and other parts of the frame, allegedly warned the company about safety issues but were instructed to falsify documents instead. Incidents like these may have resulted from companies like Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems chasing higher profit margins at the expense of quality manufacturing and service. In today's interview, David, Bill, and Moe discuss how airlines' demands to cram passengers into planes may have resulted in this past week's Alaska Airlines technical malfunction. Bill and Moe also explain how the airline regulators at the Federal Aviation Administration have been asleep at the wheel for decades when it comes to oversight, and how the profit-driven corporate governance at companies like Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems has contributed to this sprawling crisis.A transcript of this episode is available here.Links:Boeing Supplier Ignored Warnings Of “Excessive Amount Of Defects,” Former Employees Allege (The Lever, 2023)BONUS: This past Monday's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, features our interview with journalist and sports writer Matt Brown, about how the private equity industry could soon be getting its claws into college football. The DOT's airline proposals: Advocates weigh in on refunds, disclosures

Under the Biden Administration, the DOT has put out several proposals related to rules for airlines, passengers and travel advisors. Two of the biggest are about refunds and fee disclosures: In the first, when flyers should be entitled to refunds and in the second, when air ticket sellers – like travel agents -- should disclose fees like bags, change fees, and how much it would cost for families to sit together. And there are other rulemakings in the works, plus a new online dashboard on airline policies for delays and cancellations. In short, it seems like a lot is going on. But what does it mean, what do advocates think needs to be clarified in order for flyers and agents to truly benefit, and how can people get involved in the comment process before the DOT issues its final rulemaking? Host Rebecca Tobin and Travel Weekly senior editor for aviation Robert Silk talk about these issues with Eben Peck, the executive vice president of advocacy at the American Society of Travel Advisors, and Bill McGee, a consumer advocate who is now with the American Economic Liberties Project. Bill McGee, airline expert, consumer advocate, consultant to Consumer Reports and a former columnist for USA Today, talks with James Shillinglaw of Insider Travel Report about what's going on with airlines today as we emerge from nearly a year of the pandemic. McGee discusses how airlines have adapted to the new COVID-19 environment, points out the lack of government oversight on airline COVID policies, airline refunds and change fees, how airlines can survive with historically low airfares, the prospects for a return of business travel, the reintroduction of the 737MAX, a recent victory for airline consumers in a new DOT ruling, and much more. He also updates us on his own novel, "Half the Child," published nearly two years ago and now available as an audiobook. McGee also is author of a book on the airline industry, “Attention All Passengers.” For more information on “Half the Child” or to get in touch with Bill McGee, visit www.halfthechild.com. “Attention All Passengers” brings to light the shortcomings of the airline industry thanks to Bill McGee, a Consumer Reports Travel Journalist who formerly worked in airline flight operations management. The negative trends of quality and safety examined in this book are incredibly relevant as Bill always writes for the fellow traveler. He is a Consumer Reports Travel Journalist and writes with the intention to inform other consumers accurately and unbiasedly. In his book, he calls for change from the airline industry and the FAA as they conspire to make money without paying the price. Besides his non-fiction work, Bill also followed a passion to write fiction, more recently, with his book “Half the Child.” This book is the first book in many years to note the difficulties of a custody battle from a father’s point of view. Focusing on a father and son relationship, “Half the Child” takes place over four summers as we observe the highs and lows of navigating life during such a difficult time.

We're back for Part 2 of a conversation between Kevin Weaver of The Warrior's Journey, photographer Lloyd Smith, and veteran Bill McGee as he reflects on his experiences in Vietnam. On Jan. 17th, 1969, Bill McGee was 10 months into a deployment in Vietnam when his life changed forever: during a battle in the Ben Cat district, he jumped out of his armed personnel carrier directly onto a land mine. The explosion cost him one of his legs, and after receiving the last of three Purple Hearts during all the action he had endured, Bill was sent home and received an artificial leg. Like so many Vietnam veterans, Bill didn't receive a hero's welcome, but a feeling of rejection as he reintegrated into American society, only adding to his pain. However, through embarking on a journey of faith and learning to share his story, Bill discovered healing and wholeness. During Bill's time in Vietnam, he took hundreds of photos with a Kodak 126 Instamatic camera. Half a century later, over 800 of those photos have been brought to life thanks to a partnership with friend and avid photographer Lloyd Smith. The photos and the response to them have helped speed up his emotional healing process and serve as a reminder of a pivotal time in his life. What You'll Hear: Growing up in a traditional church in a small town, Bill just thought about his faith as something you do.  When he went to college, through FCA he heard about Jesus as someone to have a relationship with instead of someone who wants to have their thumb on you The atmosphere his daughter is now in at college is very different and against Christianity Bill took a job with IBM.  The more he hung around people who were more concerned with lifestyle and money the more he became like them.  He was compromising his beliefs and grew distant from the Lord. His wife started praying for him a lot.  Things started to not work out for him.   He and his wife agreed he should leave that job and he became blacklisted, and so he started his own consulting business God brought to him men for him to minister to, and it kept growing.  Eventually Bill's pastor asked him to join the staff at their church as Men's Ministry pastor. Stewardship is much more than just money In past human history, they had to spend all of their time just getting by.  We now have much more free time. TV, the internet, entertainment and social media consume our free time We need to be intentional and plan our time for the things that are high priority "Everyone will find time to do what they want to do, and if they don't they'll find an excuse" The Momentum is a grander scale of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University where the whole church goes through the concepts If you can get the church to talk about money, you can get them to talk about anything Time and money affect our relationships more than anything Dave Ramsey gets in your face and tells it like it is A tithe is an act of worship God can't have your heart if He doesn't have your money Money is where the natural and the supernatural come together If you worry more about how you're going to spend your money than how you're going to spend time with God, there's a problem God holds our relationships together like a skewer holds an apple together that's cut into slices If the husband isn't leading well, the wife won't respond well So many couples put children above their marriage, but children should be third in priority behind God and the spouse Your children are learning from your example Every man wants to win, but if you don't have other men holding you accountable, it's going to be a whole lot harder If we could do it by ourselves, we would have done it already You have to be OK with the fact that there are some people you just don't need to be friends with Be straight with a man and tell someone you like what you see in his character and ask him to start meeting in a group regularly Don't ever give up on the calling God has placed on your life, write it down, and start praying Contact bmcgee@compassionchristian.com
