My guest today worked for Club Med from 1996 to 2001. His first season was in Club Med Punta Cana in 1996 as a Set Designer. He just might be the only set designer in Club Med that I have encountered who actually has a degree in Set Design from the University of Arizona. Around 1999, he helped form “The A Team”, in which my guest and a few others would travel from village to village evaluating the entertainment teams. I was working in Asia when this was going on and never had heard of it before now, so I had a few questions about that. We will also talk about how he helped design Sharkie's in Turks in 1997 and also helped design the Circus show, “Circus Nightmares & Children's Dreams”. He is now a college professor and has been living a very nomadic life for the last 10 years. Please help me welcome, from around the world, the one and only, Rapp! Rapp wanted to work and travel so he bought a book about working abroad and applied to Club Med. He had a phone interview and was sent to Punta Cana which turned out to be Kevin Batt's first season as CDV. Rapp also worked in the villages of Cherating and Ria Bintan in Asia. When he needed supplies for Bintan, he had to cross the Strait of Malacca in a tiny speedboat dodging tankers and waves just to get fabric! Rapp helped with the reopening of Punta Cana in 2000 and Crested Butte in 2001. He was at the opening of Club Med Varadero and tells us about that experience and what it was like buying black-market staples in Cuba! Please enjoy this episode with Rapp! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. We originally thought Dee Fuller overcame the usual body issues when stressing the body in an ultra event on her way to her second women's win at UM Australia. A few days later she went public on Facebook about struggling with an eating disorder leading up to, and while competing this year. Something I was not aware of when we recorded this conversation.During our conversation she was open about various eating disorders, multiple PTSD triggers and other mental health struggles brought on by a variety of traumas. (trigger alerts)She wants to discuss mental health issues in an open forum in hopes of helping others feel comfortable to do so and to help others recognize that they are not the only one's suffering. Her May 20th Facebook post in which she shares her current struggle can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/dee.fuller.125/posts/pfbid03dCrwzABMSFoK2eromiCTn75CCY13YEkUL6KeBP2PYex6rzGmkvTScGxHdsJyJjHlThis episode is the second of two that I have used to focus on Mental Health in the ultra community. The first was Season 4, Episode 2, when I spoke with Heidi Buttery who has created a website with a multitude of resources. The term "haze" relates to dry season plantation burning at this time of year which creates palls of toxic smoke across the region. This is impacting communities, healthcare systems and tourism throughout mainland South East Asia. So this week, Gary and Hannah discuss the environmental stories linked to travel and tourism in South East Asia and the broader region. We look at the transboundary haze hanging over Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam - and the likelihood of this impacting Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore once the rainy season ends in those parts. Plus, a 'heatwave alert' in Thailand, an oil spill in the Philippines and "oil waste" dumped at sea reaching the coastline in Bintan. Will these events result in booking cancellations for the various festivals during April and the five-day Chinese Golden Week at the start of May - which South East Asian tourist boards hope will kickstart the return of Chinese travellers in large numbers? And, we discuss a new report by McKinsey, Accor and Trip.com addressing the sustainable motivations of Chinese tourists, and we look at how airlines and cruise lines are trying to control the narrative around sustainable aviation and cruise fuel.

Badang was a powerful man from the Malay world who lived in Sungai Batu Pahat, Malaysia. He was active in the courts of the Raja Sri Wikrama of the Kingdom Of Singapura. He was also associated with various historical artefacts, such as the Singapore Stone.According to a legend, Badang was a slave who had been tasked with clearing the forest for his owner. He caught a genie in his net at the Singapore River. In exchange for his freedom, the latter agreed to let him be the strongest man in the land. Upon eating the genie's vomit, Badang became very strong and could uproot trees effortlessly.Badang was a Malay boy from Malaysia's Batu Pahat River. He was the only son of two farmers who worked hard until their deaths. When he was young, he worked as a coolie for a rich farmer named Orang Kaya Nira Sura in Sumatra, Indonesia.Despite being a slave, Badang had royal blood as he reportedly descended from a prince from the Bugis tribe who married a woman from the Malay community in Bintan. His father, on the other hand, was from the Ming Dynasty. Legend has it that his lineage came from the blood of a Chinese prince who married a woman from the same tribe. Badang eventually became the army chief of the Sultan of Johor. His descendant was Hang Mahmud, whose family had also been involved in the wars in Malacca and Johor. Hang Tuah, son of Hang Mahmud, was a legend who is regarded as a great warrior.Read more at https://mythlok.com/badang/

My guest today and I met at Club Med Ria Bintan in Indonesia in 2001/2002, but his first season was in Club Med Bali as an au pair Mini Club G.O. in Summer of 1998. Everyone, please help me welcome the first Indonesian EXGO to MFS, Marthen! Uncovered during this interview is the fact that Marthen, who was born in Indonesia but now lives in Malaysia, studied French literature at a private university in East Jakarta and I do not think he even mentioned that to me when we worked together the entire year! Marthen worked for Club Med from 1998 to 2011 and worked in many villages in the Asian sector such as Bali, Bintan, Cherating, Phuket, Kabira and Kani. Marthen has stories and recollections from each village, so I hope you enjoy this interview with a very kind and charming man. I asked him to do his “Takashi” impersonation (this will be explained during the interview and check out the video below) and he kindly indulged me. We fondly reminisced over Ria Bintan a little and have a laugh about why the “Swimming Contest” pool game used to freak and stress me out, how impossible it was to win at Janken (rock paper scissors) with Japanese GM's, trying to outrun the ever-present and noxious, mosquito-spraying truck and the wonder of Korean honeymooners arriving to Bintan dressed exactly the same. **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to and is available on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora, Podchaser and Listen Notes. Kuatnya Terkaman Macan Asia Timur Lumpuhkan Sayap Garuda Oleh. Nurjamilah, S.Pd.I. (Tim Redaksi NarasiPost.Com) Voice over talent: Giriyani NarasiPost. Lantas bagaimana Islam memandang terkait kerja sama antarnegara? We round off this week on The Aid Station with a trip to the resort island of Bintan, Indonesia just an hour's ferry ride from Singapore to meet Abdul Wahab, Group GM, Bintan Resorts International. Bintan has developed a reputation as a Mass Participant destination particularly for people from Singapore with a portfolio of events including Tour de Bintan, Indofood IRONMAN 70.3, Bintan Marathon and Triathlon built up over the past 15 years. The island has been hit hard by COVID-19 with visitor arrivals of around 90,000 per month in January plummeting to just a handful of people - mostly returning Indonesians. "Typically we had five ferries from Singapore each weekday and 10-14 on the weekends. We now have one per week with sometimes only 3-5 people on it". Hotels across the island have been moth-balled and thousands of staff are out of work. "The one positive is that we have remained totally COVID-free and the hope is that we may soon be able to open up to events but that will require agreement between Singapore and Indonesia to re-open the border". Listen to my talk with Wahab here https://youtu.be/53oTnM1Z2Eg

I've been prompted this week in my own development about setting goals rather than drifting along and hoping for the best and I wanted to share this with you. When I was a very young kid, I remember that we had an old black Austin Wolseley. I remember the leather seats and the 'horse' in the back - which is where I would sit. My sister and brother to either side of me and mum and dad in the front. On occasional Sunday's when dad wasn't preaching or we weren't going to Grandma's, we would be treated to a Sunday drive. [player] One particular time, we went to Redhill in Kent, southern England. This was long before the M25 motorway went past this particular spot and we parked the old Wolseley at the top of the hill, unloaded the picnic blanket and the basket of treats. I rolled down the hill with my siblings and had to be carried back up exhausted. It was a beautiful sunny autumn day and life was good. Those Sunday's were special. We never knew where we would end up. Finding new places to enjoy. Those Sunday drives became less frequent as I grew older. By the time I was around 11, they stopped altogether. And I missed those Sunday drives. I wanted to spend the day drifting around and stumbling across some beautiful corner of England. A day when I could drift along and be taken for a journey somewhere and just enjoy myself. I've met a lot of people who live a Sunday Drive kind of life. They're drifting along being carried by the current and the winds of life. Sometimes they enjoy it, but most days they moan about the place they’ve ended up. And of course, it's not their responsibility to take themselves somewhere more exciting. No that's what somebody else "should" be doing for them. Now, I'm no botanist, but in my experience, when a plant is not growing, it's dying. If you don’t water or feed your plants, or tend the garden for weeds and pests, then your plants will wither and die. I've found the same happens to the lives of people. When we don’t feed and water our own growth and take responsibility for tending our life for choking weeds and pests, we too will begin to die. A little at a time. My ability and character as a leader similarly needs to continuously grow and mature, be fed and nourished, weeded and cleaned of pests and problems. Of course, there's the fear that if I grow too fast and too big, well I'll just be the tall poppy and as my peers try desperately to bring me down, and my bosses chop my head off first because I'm too visible. So I'll just keep my head down and not bother growing. Imagine what it takes to plan a journey from Singapore to Bintan. I know that Bintan is a little south of Singapore, I know that there are ferry services to get there, so I'll just head to the coast, find the first ferry heading south and get on board." That would be crazy right? No, first you'll fire up Google and search for the right ferry, choose which service, what time, get a ticket, and so on and so forth. It takes a little planning. Every journey can be broken down into manageable steps or goals. These act as milestones along the way to make sure we're still headed in the right direction, making good and timely progress. Any journey worth taking requires a little effort to plan and prepare. Your journey to leadership success is no different. Each goal is a milestone on your journey indicating your progress and providing direction to the next goal. And if you go off track, you can easily get back on track. So where would you like your leadership ability and character to be a month from now? INFLUENCE WITHOUT AUTHORITY Be first to know... Click here
