Aleah Chapin   http://www.aleahchapin.com   Aleah Chapin (b. 1986 Seattle, WA) is a painter whose direct portrayals of the human form have expanded the conversation around western culture's representations of the body in art. Described by Eric Fischl as “the best and most disturbing painter of flesh alive today,” Chapin's work has explored aging, gender and beauty, influenced in part by the community within which she was raised on an island in the Pacific Northwest. More recently, Chapin's work has taken a radically inward shift, expanding her visual language in order to better express the turbulent times we are living in. Consistent throughout her career, Chapin's work asks the question: What does it mean to exist within a body today? She has attended residencies at the Leipzig International Art Program (Germany) and MacDowell (United States). Chapin has exhibited both nationally and internationally at places such as Flowers Gallery (New York, London, Hong Kong), The Belvedere Museum (Austria), and the National Portrait Gallery (London).

Welcome to our first lockdown podcast! And forgive us for our imperfect audio sins, but boy do we have a bumper catch up on our hands. We kick off with some virtual viewing reviews: Picasso on Paper, Andy Warhol at the Tate Modern, Quentin Blake at Hastings Contemporary, Google Arts and Culture Tours, and the Virtual Viewing Rooms at Frieze New York. And to feed the lockdown boredom, we have a feast of documentary suggestions, and some creative inspiration courtesy of the The Artist Support Pledge and The Isolation Art School. Believe it or not, but there are news stories in the art world that have nothing to do with Covid-19, and we found two of them. We discuss the controversial plans to demolish the buildings that host Picasso's murals in Oslo, and reviews of the 2020 BP Portrait Award winner and why people fixate on her label as a 'self taught' artist. This episode's Artist Focus is war artist Paul Nash. Best known for his striking modernist landscapes of the trenches, Nash was an official war artist in both World Wars. We discuss the changes in his works between the two wars, how witnessing death and destruction influenced his work, and his inter-war experimentation in Surrealism. Got them back to school blues? Not us, we love September and we've got some tasty art treats to placate you with this autumn: Lee Krasner at the Barbican, Olafur Eliasson at the Tate Modern, and the BP Portrait Award. We then get into the nitty gritty of who is Super-Curator HUO (Hans Ulrich Obrist) and his insane work ethic and distaste for sleep. We ponder if creatives are now expected to be working to such extreme levels of productivity, and what do we lose because of this? Our September artist focus is the queen of the line, Bridget Riley. Now in her 88th year, this British artist hasn't stopped teasing our optic nerves since the 1960s. Ahead of a major retrospective exhibition coming to the Hayward Gallery this autumn, we've taken a moment to reflect on her epic career. Joshua LaRock is internationally recognized as a preeminent figurative artist. His exquisite paintings are an ode to the past filtered through a contemporary life. LaRock’s portraits and figurative pieces alike are memorable for both their emotive quality and for evoking an eerily present feeling. Inspired by Bouguereau and other masters of the past, Joshua imbues a shade of the timeless, drawing the viewer deeper into his personal interpretation of how the world ought to be. Among Joshua’s most striking works are those of his wife, Laura. In 2012, “Portrait of the Artist’s Wife” was hailed as ‘deserving special attention’ during the historic America China Oil Painting Artists League exhibit at the Beijing World Art Museum. While “Laura in Black” was part of the prestigious BP Portrait Award 2016 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London and is the subject of his premier instructional video “The Layers of Portrait Painting”. Joshua currently lives in North Carolina with his wife and two children. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/joshualarock In this episode, Joshua discusses: -His initial interest and study of music and music business. -How he became aware of classical realism and his discovery of John Singer Sargent, Jacob Collins, and ARC. -The common experience that he shared of being an artist that didn’t start from a young age. -Controlling his anxiety during “quick sketches.” -How long it takes him to do each of his paintings and how he sometimes wishes he spent more time in the planning stage. -His first portrait of his wife, Laura and what made it special. -How you only need to do one good painting for people to take interest in you. -His advice for making decisions, or putting yourself in the position to have to make decisions. -What it feels like for artists to take on the additional title of “entrepreneur” (and a great example from Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel). -His stance on classical realism and the fact that not as many people are doing what he does. -How soon artists should consider teaching others. -How to push past imposter syndrome, especially when it comes to teaching. Joshua's Final Push will inspire you to take that deep breath and just go for it!   Quotes: “There’s always a point in each painting at which I think ‘this is not going to work.’” “There are points where you need to take it off the easel and put it against a wall and not look at it for several months.” “There’s always a little bit of a dance between things that you’re really passionate about and things that you have to do day to day.” “I don’t think there is a ‘too soon’ to teach art.” Links mentioned: Tim Ferriss Podcast Ep #325 Featuring Derek Sivers John Singer Sargent Jacob Collins Art Renewal Center (ARC) Connect with Joshua: Website / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter On the next episode: Frannerd : Website / Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!
