A Sailor Finds Companionship with Birds II

Sailor and artist, Brechin Morgan, circumnavigated the globe solo. Alone on the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, he welcomed the companionship of a Swallow-tailed Gull, flying off of the bow stay in front of the boat, like a little shadow of moonlight floating back and forth, almost all night long. Brechin saw other birds on his voyage, too. He said, "They were friends in the middle of the void. Amazing visitors – I couldn't understand how they managed to get 1,500 miles from the nearest piece of rock and survive. But obviously they were more ancient mariners than I would ever imagine being."More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. San Francisco's great wealth creation in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as the emergence of dynastic family elites largely developed as a result of exploitation of nearby natural resources. But most great cities have followed a similar path. And today's Silicon Valley fortunes are little different in that respect, but substitute the mining of academic excellence for natural resources. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/james-herlihy/message

Rome of the Pacific! Geneva of the Pacific! A city that aspired to eclipse New York. What do Nordstrom, Whole Foods, H&M, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap and Crate & Barrel have in common? Care to guess? They all have left, or are leaving, San Francisco! I asked my guest, Dr. Gray Brechin, if we are seeing the lowest of the low for San Francisco in its history? A categorical "yes" was his answer! He adds that the San Francisco of unforgettable songs by Tony Bennett and Journey is gone. Dr. Brechin tells the history of San Francisco, from its booms in mid-19th century to busts and booms again. He explains how the forests of Northern California were sacrificed to build San Francisco. We talk about the media moguls and industry magnates of San Francisco's past, who lived in and around the city and invested in it. He draws a distinction to the tech entrepreneurs of our time, who do not invest in San Francisco and are ahistorical. As for San Francisco's liberal culture and politics, did you know that the City's elite used to be Republican? DR. Brechin IS AN HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHER AND AUTHOR whose chief interests are the state of California, the environmental impact of cities upon their hinterlands, and the invisible landscape of New Deal public works. He is currently a visiting scholar in the U.C. Berkeley Department of Geography and founder and project scholar of The Living New Deal. He is a San Francisco Bay Area local, who in the 1980s worked as a  journalist and TV producer in San Francisco. He is the author of Imperial San Francisco: Urban Power, Earthly Ruin, a book that we discuss in this episode.  To learn more about Dr. Brechin, you can visit his website. In a short programme this time because of a Covid briefing, we hear how a case of mistaken identity brought a second celebration of St Maughold, with Shenn Laa'l Maghal Geuree, the old style St Maughold's winter feast day, on 26th November - the day when people elsewhere, particularly in Brittany, celebrate the feast day of St Malo. The dream team are back together as Will returns from annual leave to discuss the latest sporting happenings around the Highlands this week with Andrew. Kicking us off in this episode are Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who have gone through a sticky patch of form recently but still sit in second place in the Championship. Is there any need to panic? Do they need to score more goals? How does Wallace Duffy feel after a string of injuries at the start of the season? If you've had any of these questions, we've got you covered. It has been a busy week at Ross County too, but more for what hasn't happened than what has after their game against Hibernian was called off twice because of positive Covid tests. It has broken their momentum after last week's eye-catching 5-0 win over Dundee, and the Staggies will return to action with the toughest possible test - away at Rangers. Can they take something away from Ibrox? There's also more of a spotlight on the rest of football in the area, with Clachnacuddin's Highland League match against Brechin City under a particular spotlight as Will outright says he doesn't want Brechin to win the league. That's the top of the table, but there's also a brief discussion on the state of the relegation battle, as well as North Caledonian League and ICT Women updates. After all rugby in Inverness got cancelled last Saturday because of Covid, Highland and Inverness Craig Dunain return to action tomorrow. That's not all from rugby though, as Jamie Dobie made his Scotland debut against Tonga in their first Autumn international - but should his arrival on the senior international scene be a sign that the SRU should put more faith in their own youth? Heritage politics in the UK - Laurie Taylor talks to Ruth Adams, the author of a new study which argues that powerful interest groups have championed a 'country house' version of our national past in place of a more complex and diverse history. Has the heritage lobby transformed the architectural heritage of the aristocracy from a minority interest to a cause with popular support? And, if so, at what cost? Also, Dr Caroline Gatrell discusses her sociological exploration of the every day lives of modern day parish priests with her co- author, Dr Nigel Peyton, the Bishop of Brechin.Producer: Jayne Egerton.
