The dizzying variety of options, the amazing range of flavours, and for some of us, the sheer quantity that you can eat. It's easy to see the appeal of a buffet. It takes the stress out of choosing what to eat - just have it all! But are there risks that we need to think about? Food hygiene specialists suggest there might be. Restaurant and hotel buffets can be a food poisoning risk. The large number of different dishes and people serving themselves creates opportunities for cross-contamination. Microbes can be transferred from people to dishes, from dishes to people and from one dish to another. Even the air can transfer microbes to your food. It's easy to see how an entire buffet could end up contaminated. Food temperature creates another risk factor. It's easy for food to be kept lukewarm and in the danger zone between 8C and 63C where bacteria and other microbes grow and multiply easily. Restaurants that manage buffets well can reduce the risks. Hot food should be replaced after two hours and cold food after four. It's important that the old food is disposed of and that containers are not just topped up, allowing the older food to contaminate fresh items. Hot food should be kept above 63C, and cold food should be refrigerated. However, any attempts by hospitality businesses to reduce risks can easily be undone by careless clients. There are many ways that diners can unwittingly or thoughtlessly increase the risks. Tongs and ladles can be contaminated by those who do not wash their hands, or who reuse their plates when getting a second helping. Food on display can be contaminated by people using the wrong utensil or who accidentally drop the handles into bowls of food. That's before even mentioning those who cough or sneeze near the buffet. So, to enjoy a buffet, while keeping the risks as low as possible, you should check to see that it is well-managed by the restaurant or hotel, that others are following good hygiene rules and that you do the same. Even so, a buffet is likely to be more risky than other types of restaurants.

First, Ben and Celestia react to the CDC shooting, then Ben looks at some skeptical-leaning responses of ghost hunters to Dan Rivera's death and the Annabelle narrative. Rounding out current events, Celestia has another RFK-adjacent story, this one about two women hospitalized after peptide injections at a Las Vegas wellness festival. For our main segment, food historian and Vegas gal-about-town Sarah Lohman joins us to share some interesting food mythos... everything from beer, MSG, spices and spoiled meat to the connection between corn flakes, enemas, masturbation and vegetarian dishes. Along the way we discover Sarah's downright distaste for Johnny Appleseed and rate our favorite Vegas buffets while learning about the history of cheap shrimp cocktail. Then, for dessert -- pink slime!

In this week's episode, Lou dives into a Q&A format, addressing a variety of listener questions related to balancing Hyrox and marathon training, nutrition, recovery, and fat loss. She emphasises the importance of setting goals, particularly when training for both endurance and strength events. Lou also shares insights on effective training strategies, the significance of recovery, and the role of mindset in achieving fitness goals. KEY TAKEAWAYS To effectively balance High Rocks and marathon training, it's essential to implement smart programming and periodisation. This involves structuring your training year into focused blocks for each discipline, ensuring adequate recovery, and accepting that peak performance in both may not be achievable simultaneously. While marathon training can burn a significant number of calories, it may not be the most effective for fat loss due to the body's adaptation to steady-state cardio. High Rocks training, which includes resistance work and high-intensity intervals, may be more beneficial for fat loss and muscle retention. To hold onto muscle while marathon training, it's crucial to continue strength training at least twice a week, consume adequate protein, and ensure proper fuelling during long runs to prevent muscle breakdown. When faced with buffet situations, focus on high-protein, nutrient-dense foods, practice portion control, and eat slowly to help manage intake. It's important to prioritise quality over quantity and to remember that enjoying the holiday experience doesn't require overeating. For improving running speed, consistency is key. Incorporating speed sessions, tempo runs, and strength training into your routine will help enhance performance. It's vital to trust the training process and remain committed to a structured program for optimal results. BEST MOMENTS "Balancing High Rocks and marathon prep is all about smart programming and honest goal setting." "If your main goal is fat loss and you want to look toned, then High Rocks style training is the superior of the two." "Endurance training is catabolic, meaning we are breaking down tissue for energy, especially if our energy intake is low." "I think your best event is the one that excites you the most and fits into your lifestyle the most." "If it's not a 'fuck yes,' it's a no. Don't just eat all of it for the sake of it." But everything changed during the lockdown in March 2020. Determined to regain control, Lou immersed herself in research, found joy in working out in her garden, and started tracking her nutrition and steps. Surprisingly, she lost a stone in less than three months and discovered a newfound love for fitness. Fueling her passion, Lou pursued personal training qualifications and launched her Instagram page in September 2020. After months of building a solid foundation, branding, and gaining relevant expertise, she started helping others achieve what once felt impossible—losing fat, feeling empowered, and loving the journey without restrictions. With numerous success stories, digital products, and a thriving membership program called Train with Lou, Lou now coaches, teaches, and learns about food, exercise, and mindset. I'm back from Florida, with two of my grandsons by my side, and it was one for the books. We didn't bring home any Osceolas, but we had some heart‑pounding encounters and a surprise discovery of what might be Florida's best buffet according to Cranky. Sure, no turkeys fell, but watching these boys learn, grow, and share in the tradition made this trip one of my most memorable. Tune in to hear all about it! Bing Chen is the Executive Chairman, CEO, and Co-founder of Gold House, a leading cultural ecosystem dedicated to empowering Asian Pacific creators and entrepreneurs to drive societal change. A visionary leader in media and diversity, Bing was formerly YouTube's Global Head of Creator Development and Management, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the global creator economy. He has been recognized on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list and honored as a Hollywood Reporter Next Gen Leader and ABC News History Maker. Bing also serves on numerous boards, including the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers. He is a Harvard-educated strategist known for building community-driven initiatives that amplify underrepresented voices. Through Gold House and beyond, Bing continues to push boundaries in media, venture capital, and cross-cultural innovation. In this episode, Bing brings wit, vulnerability, and visionary insight to the conversation. He discusses his upbringing as a Taiwanese-American in the South, his early confidence, and how experiences in Shanghai helped shape his understanding of racism and privilege. He gives a masterclass in the creator economy, offering tips for monetization, longevity, and community building. He also dives into Gold House's mission to make Asian-led creativity mainstream, explaining its work in film, venture, music, and health. Throughout, Bing emphasizes the importance of shared humanity over divisions and champions a collaborative, abundance-minded future. Parents, Prom, and the Cabbage Patch: Childhood and Family Stories: Bing shares hilarious and heartfelt stories about his parents' immigration, cultural quirks, and growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee. This includes some very memorable (and very real) parental sex talk. (2:25) Magic Bikes and Southern Roots: Growing Up Asian in the South: Bing reflects on his unique childhood experience in a mostly white Southern town, noting how he didn't face racism until moving to California. He discusses confidence, energy, and how being different can actually attract others. (5:45)Band Geeks and Prom Regrets: High School and Identity Formation: In this personal segment, Bing opens up about high school, popularity, belonging to many social circles, and his bittersweet prom story. He touches on early lessons in connection and rejection. (8:00)Buffets, Boys' Clubs, and Chubby Cattle: Food as a Love Language: Ami and Bing bond over their love of buffets, with Bing recounting how he formed a boys' club just to avoid eating alone at Hometown Buffet. He drops a hidden gem recommendation in NYC and name-drops Chubby Cattle Group. (12:45)Building YouTube and the Creator Economy From Scratch: Bing gets into the serious stuff: his pivotal role at YouTube, how he helped coin “creator,” and what current creators need to know about sustaining success. This is a goldmine for anyone working in media or content creation. (14:00)Gold House = The Asian Disney?: Changing Culture at Scale: Bing breaks down what Gold House actually does—from investing in ventures to pushing Asian narratives in film, music, and business. He compares it to the rise of hip-hop and explains the long-term cultural strategy. (20:30)We're More Similar Than We Think”: Stereotypes and Species-Level Thinking: In a profound and slightly controversial segment, Bing argues that the most damaging stereotype isn't about race—but about our belief that we're all so different. He emphasizes unity over hyper-specificity. (30:00)Candy, Concerts, and Cracking From Burnout: Rapid Fire and Vulnerability: In a fun, fast-paced wrap-up, Bing talks about burnout, sour candy as therapy, why he doesn't complain, and his love for Tupac and Hans Zimmer. He ends on a strong note about ethics, ambition, and resilience. (37:30) Connect with Bing Chen:WebsiteInstagramLinkedInX Let's Connect:Instagram This podcast is produced by Ginni Media.
