Sports' Forgotten Heroes
155: Danny Gardella - MLB

Sports' Forgotten Heroes

A name so few know ... Danny Gardella. Gardella played for the New York (baseball) Giants (now the #SFGiants) in 1944 and 1945. Then he battled management about his salary. Instead of accepting what the Giants offered, he challenged the reserve clause and lost. Rather than accept the terms, he opted to play elsewhere, in the Mexican League. It cost Danny his career. Banned from the Majors, Gardella did get one more opportunity to play in the Majors, with the St. Louis #Cardinals in 1950. But he only appeared in one game, and that was it. The Cardinals didn't see a future for Danny on their roster, demoted him to AA, and Danny never saw the light of day in Major League Baseball game again. Of course, those that followed and who challenged the reserve met with much more success, such as Curt Flood and Andy Messersmith. The free agents of today do not have to work within the confines of the reserve clause. But Danny did, and while he won a small sum of money in a lawsuit against #MLB, he lost his entire career. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, we take a look back at the brief career of Danny Gardella and his fight with MLB and the New York Giants about the reserve clause with my guest Robert Elias who authored the book, "Dangerous Danny Gardella."

Jim is joined by St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports columnist and Hall of Fame voter Benjamin Hochman to break down the HOF candidacy of former St. Louis Cardinals centerfielder Curt Flood. First, Benjamin and Jim cover Flood's legacy as a trailblazer in the world of professional sports and workers' rights (11:33). Next, they discuss Flood's role on two Cardinals World Series championship teams, how as a player Flood compares favorably to Hall of Fame center fielder Richie Ashburn, and Flood's relatively high WAR total in just 12 full MLB seasons (17:11). Finally, Benjamin and Jim break down the significance of the fact that only Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, and Brooks Robinson had more hits than Flood in the 1960s (39:18), before both stating whether or not they believe he deserves a plaque in Cooperstown (44:33).

Cooper says “Decisions of the Supreme Court are not lightly overruled… We find no general or widespread disregard of the extremely important position the player occupies… Clearly, the preponderance of credible proof does not favor the elimination of the reserve clause.” However, the judge says changes in the reserve clause should be made through negotiation but denies Flood damages. Flood will appeal the decision to the Supreme Court but in vain.Flood, of course, blazed the trail with his actions for Free Agency. I heard from some fans they are unhappy Flood changed baseball history with his movement, but I don't see it that way. One Amazing streak comes to an end.On August 13, 1906 — At Washington Park in Brooklyn, John "Brakeman" Taylor is replaced by a reliever for the first time since June of 1901 when the Brooklyn Superbas knock him out of the game in the third inning. In a 15 game series vs the upstart Chicago White Sox, Rumors swirled about the series, with James A. Hart accusing Taylor of having “laid down” against the Sox in his last three starts. He was traded in the offseason on 1903 from the team and then reacquired during the 1906 season. Taylor retired after the 1907 season when the Cub's would win their first of 2 straight World Series. On August 14, 1958, Vic Power of the Cleveland Indians steals home twice in the same game. His second stolen base gives the Indians a 10-9 win in 10 innings. Not known for his base-stealing ability, Power will finish the season with only three stolen bases.During his 12-year career Power will steal 45 total bases and get caught 35 times, he stole 9 twice and in 1959 he had a career-high 9 steaks and 13 caught stealing. Power mainly a starter, also appeared 4 times in his career as a pinch-runner, at age 36 and 38. He also once got out of a jam on the base paths by running directly towards the fielder running with the ball, while waving his arms in the air. He flustered him enough that he threw the ball to someone else instead of tagging Power.Needless to say, despite his amazing feat, Ty Cobb was never concerned by Vic. Bill Lamb's biographical essay about Len Koenecke.Errata: Len Koenecke set a fielding percentage record for National League outfielders in 1935. That record was broken by Harry Craft in 1940. The first qualifying National League center fielder to field 1.000 in a season was Curt Flood in 1966 -- the most recent was Brandon Nimmo in 2022.Episodes referenced:142 - The 1919 Black Sox w/ Jacob Pomrenke 159 - Hidden Histories: Baseball's Deadball Era Photographs w/ Jim Chapman178 - Called Up to the Major Leagues w/ Zak Ford -->Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/tT8d3pVUsN-->You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including the books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. Baseball lore and history is filled with many valuable players, and not all of them are the Hall of Famers you know. In The One Hundred Most Important Players in Baseball History (Artemesia Publishing, 2023) Lincoln A. Mitchell highlights the one hundred players who have had the biggest impact on baseball, popular culture, and history through their careers inside or outside of baseball. You'll find stories about famous players like Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson, but also lesser known but deeply impactful baseball players like Curt Flood, Hal Chase, and Felipe Alou. For over 120 years baseball has been a deep part of American life as folk culture and big business, but for just as long it has also been central to race relations, labor issues, global conflicts, and the songs of Bob Dylan. These one hundred players have influenced not only America's pastime but the country as well. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. We're back! Iconic ex-roommate duo, Danaka and Nic, join me on the pod to go through the history of America's passtime. There's sure as hell a lot of shady business doings here! We'll talk about how labor relations for players have improved (and not!) over pro ball's 100+ year history. My major focus this episode was on Curt FLood, the guy who paved the way for players to be able to ore freely negotiate their contracts, which was NOT a fixture of baseball for a looooong time. Last season was serious as hell, so it's time to get fucking silly! These first three episodes are all a futile attempt at understanding and communicating about sports. Apparently people know a LOT about it, like Danaka and Nic! But if you're a girlypop like me looking for a solid introduction to the sport, here's your chance. Mwah! 1. As we continue our 2022 Cleveland Guardians position reviews, we dedicate most of the show reviewing the great rookie season by Steven Kwan. There is a faction of fans who would like to see Kwan move to centerfield and we briefly touch on that. We also get into historical comps for Kwan, which were particularly difficult, as Steven Kwan is a bit of a unicorn in terms of his player profile. We discuss his place in history among Cleveland rookies and try to look at comparable contracts for an extension for Kwan. To finish up the show, we look ahead to the future of left field for the Guardians, which should not be something they have to worry about for a while.2. Some of the statistical comps we came up with were Curt Flood, Johnny Damon, Adam Eaton, Bill Mueller, and Brett Gardner.3. The last outfielder Cleveland signed to an extension was Michael Brantley, who took a 4/$25 million deal before he broke out. That won't be enough to sign Kwan now, but recent contract extensions for Michael Harris and Kevin Kiermaier seem reasonable. And as far as rookies that could succeed Kwan in left field are years away, hopefully, and could be drafted in the 2023 draft. Why has Oakland produced so many all-star athletes? This is the question that propels Paul Brekke-Miesner's book “Home Field Advantage: The City That Changed the Face of Sports” through decades of local history, from the playgrounds to stadiums. His exploration helps explain not only the origins of this highly concentrated pool of athletic ability, but also why so many local stars have used their visibility to call attention to social struggles, long before Colin Kaepernick famously took a knee to protest police violence. An Oakland native who grew up playing ball in the Eastmont neighborhood and began covering sports at Castlemont High more than half a century ago, Brekke-Miesner brings deep knowledge about such iconic athletes as Bill Russell, Ricky Henderson, Frank Robinson, Curt Flood and many others to our conversation in this episode. Along the way, we also discuss the impact of Prop. 13 on youth sports, some very unlikely superstars, and why The Town might be better off without the billionaire owners who keep breaking our hearts.
