When your lead coach quits, it can feel like your best friend just dumped you—and the panic of "I can't do this without them" hits before the schedule gap even sinks in. But losing a key instructor is a normal part of studio growth, and handled right, it's a leadership and systems upgrade hiding in plain sight. Caroline Plambeck and Lisa Taylor walk through how to stabilize, communicate and rebuild when a key instructor leaves in Episode 736: What to Do When Your Lead Coach Quits. Stabilize before you react: in the first hour, go operational—get the facts, keep the decision circle small, and hold the announcement Lean on your bench: a trained pipeline of instructors lets you cover classes without panic-hiring out of desperation Communicate with calm: tell your team first, keep it factual and professional, and celebrate the outgoing coach on the way out Replace the role with structure: redistribute responsibilities and strengthen your processes instead of cloning one irreplaceable person Build a bench that lasts: cross-train your team, define roles and KPIs, and make the lead coach position sustainable long term A strong studio doesn't run on one irreplaceable person—it runs on systems any strong coach can step into. Pause the emotional reaction, look for the opportunity in the change, and you'll come out steadier than you went in. Episode 736 shows you how. Catch you there. Just because your first studio is crushing it doesn't mean it's time to open a second studio. Successful growth only happens when your foundation is truly ready. Industry veterans Alina Cooper and Lisa Taylor outline exactly what you need to assess before making a move in Episode 728: When to Open a Second Fitness Studio Location. Profit first: your baseline is 12–18 months of strong margins and steady cash flow Operational independence: the business runs and grows without you micromanaging Leadership depth: a strong, trained team can sustain Studio #1 while you build #2 Culture you can copy: your brand experience must be documented & replicable Systems that scale: tech, SOPs and automations are capable of greater capacity Launching a second studio may seem like the natural next move—but timing it wrong can stall (or sink) what you've built already. Have you ever found yourself trying so hard to be a “perfect parent”… only to feel like it's not quite working the way you expected? In this episode of It's a Mindset, I'm joined by Lisa Taylor - family therapist, relationships consultant, speaker and founder of Strengthening Families Australia. With over 25 years of experience supporting families, schools and organisations, Lisa brings a deeply heart-centred approach to helping us understand the patterns that shape how we connect. Together, we explore what Lisa calls the “Perfect Parent Trap” - the pressure to get it right, to say the right thing, to respond perfectly - and how that can actually move us further away from the connection we're really seeking. Instead, Lisa invites us to shift from control to connection, and to become more aware of the emotional imprints from our own upbringing - what she calls our heartprints - and how they influence the way we show up as parents today. This conversation really resonated with me on a personal level. Lisa and I are at a similar stage of parenting, and as fellow authors in the Expert Author Community, there was such a natural connection and shared understanding between us. I absolutely love the work she's doing to support families, and the insights she shared - particularly around our own heartprints - were incredibly powerful. This is one of those episodes that gently invites you to pause, reflect and consider how you're showing up in your closest relationships - not from a place of judgment, but from a place of curiosity and growth. Key Episode Takeaways: What the “Perfect Parent Trap” is and why trying to get it right can backfire How your own childhood “heartprints” shape the way you parent Why shifting from control to connection can transform your relationships The importance of presence - being where your body is - in creating deeper connection About the Guest: Lisa Taylor is a family therapist, relationships consultant, speaker and founder of Strengthening Families Australia with over twenty-five years of experience walking alongside thousands of families, schools and organisations across Australia. Her heart-centred approach helps parents, educators and leaders strengthen relationships, heal generational patterns and transform how they connect with one another. Dr Jodi Richardson is joined by family therapist, educator and author Lisa Taylor for a deeply honest and eye-opening conversation about parenting, anxiety, and the hidden patterns shaping our family lives. After more than 25 years working with families, Lisa shares one powerful truth: it’s not about learning more parenting strategies… it’s about understanding ourselves first. Together, Jodi and Lisa explore how parenting can stir our deepest fears, why our reactions often come from our own childhood “heart prints,” and how shifting from control to connection can transform our relationships with our kids. In this episode, you’ll discover: Why parenting triggers anxiety and big emotional reactions What “heart prints” are—and how they shape your responses The difference between reacting to your child vs responding to them Why behaviour always equals a need How curiosity, courage and connection can change everything The three core emotional needs we all share: to feel seen, heard and loved PLUS, Lisa shares practical ways to pause in the moment, create more emotional “bandwidth,” and move away from the pressure of perfect parenting. It may mean an old, tender part of you is getting “ignited.” They explore Lisa's “heartprint” framework (the deep beliefs we carry, like “I'm not enough”), how kids “borrow our nervous system,” and why the real shift often starts with regulating ourselves instead of “fixing” our children. What if the biggest disruption to work isn't AI, automation, or hybrid models—but a 100-year-old idea about when careers are supposed to peak and decline? In episode 868, Pauline James speaks with Lisa Taylor, CEO of Challenge Factory, about why traditional career models are fundamentally broken in a world where many people will live well into their 80s and beyond. Together, they unpack how outdated assumptions about age, productivity, and “career ladders” quietly undermine engagement, waste talent, and accelerate disengagement—especially in midlife.Lisa explains how the concept of retirement at 65 was created for a very different era, why career conversations often disappear after age 49, and how manager bias—not performance—drives perceptions of declining productivity among experienced workers. The conversation also explores the idea of the “talent escalator”—and what happens when senior leaders reach the top with nowhere meaningful left to go. Lisa shares what progressive organisations are doing differently: designing roles beyond the final rung, enabling intergenerational mentorship, and creating space for purpose, contribution, and renewal across longer working lives. For individuals feeling stuck or ready to pivot, Lisa offers a practical alternative to the traditional CV-first approach—starting instead with purpose, strengths, values, and market relevance. This is a must-listen for HR leaders, executives, and professionals rethinking careers, longevity, and the future of work.Key Topics CoveredWhy retirement at 65 no longer makes sense in a world of 82+ year life expectancyMidlife as a distinct and valuable career stage—not a declineThe role of manager bias in perceived productivity dropsWhy career development conversations often stop too earlyThe “talent escalator” and how it jams at the topIntergenerational teams, mentorship, and cultural ambassadorshipWhy engaging older workers can reduce youth unemploymentA scientific, hypothesis-driven approach to talent strategyRethinking career pivots, entrepreneurship, and longer working lives

In today's episode, I'm joined by Lisa Taylor from Ontario, Canada. Lisa reached her late 30s feeling low on energy, unhappy in her marriage, and stuck in a life that didn't feel like her own. At 226 lbs, she decided something had to change. Lisa joined Weight Watchers with a close friend, made herself accountable, and started running while still playing competitive softball. She went on to lose around 60 lbs and nine dress sizes, and promised herself she'd never go back over 200 lbs. But the biggest shifts weren't just on the scales. As the weight came off, Lisa realised she'd been living by expectations she'd absorbed growing up — keeping herself small, people-pleasing, and pushing down her own needs. She began unpacking years of emotions, finding her confidence, and building a life that actually feels aligned. Lisa shares how she and her husband separated kindly, how she now supports other women on their journeys, and how she's navigating menopause, body changes and midlife with far more acceptance. She's gained a sense of peace she didn't know she was missing. Today Lisa had the pleasure to interview one of her team members, Jodi Benusa! Jodi joined a direct sales company, L'BRI PURE n' NATURAL, about 7 years ago and got off to a great start, and then the pandemic hit. She was working full-time as a social worker at a hospital and the stress escalated, and her side gig had to take a “back seat” and she lost her desire to grow a business due to the workload her job required. But a few years ago, Jodi made the decision to create her own business, and was able to walk away from her full-time job at the hospital. This was also the time she made the decision to put more time and dedication into her direct sales business. As you listen to Jodi's story, you will hear the struggles she forged through and all of the personal growth that she has experienced because of her involvement and work within her direct sales business! You will also hear how just making the decision to say YES to a side gig in L'BRI has impacted her life and her success. Listen in and be encouraged by her stories as well as her words of wisdom to anyone thinking of saying “yes” to starting a side gig! Jodi Kay Benusa is a Supervisor with L'BRI PURE n' NATURAL, and you can reach out to her via email at jodikay63@gmail.com or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jodi.slampbenusa or Instagram @jodikaybenusa Or check out all that L'BRI has to offer at her website: www.lbri.com/jodibenusa And as always, feel free to reach out to Lisa Taylor during this Summer Side-Gig Series, for a chance to explore the possibilities of your very own side-gig, or to try L'BRI's Free 7-10 Day Sample Set. This is the second interview in our Summer Side-Gig Series where we have been talking about things to consider before saying “yes” to a side-gig with a direct sales company, what questions to ask and reasons why direct sales is an excellent decision if you are needing and wanting more options in your life. Today Lisa interviewed an Oklahoma homeschool mom of 4 who said yes to L'BRI initially because money was tight, she saw how these natural aloe-first products had helped her son's eczema, and saw how she could get the products she wanted for her family at a deep discount. But when Shawna began to increase her “mustard-size” faith in what this business could do, and grabbed onto the belief that this could be the “vehicle” that would produce the extra money they would need to purchase a camper for the family to travel in, AND the potential for her to earn the car to pull that camper, she began to truly “wake up and dream.” Are you sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck, and have considered starting a side-gig? Perhaps you are a homeschool mom like Shawna, desiring more options on your time schedule. Connect with Shawna if you have questions or want more info about starting your own side-gig. Ever “talk yourself” off the ledge? Ever wish you had a counselor/coach you could access on speed dial? Well, you do. YOU can be your own counselor/coach, if only you pause and do a little “self-coaching” as we like to call it. Anxiety, stress, and the desire to be in control are all a part of human existence. But self-coaching can help you manage these thoughts and feelings. Using an inner conversational dialogue, you can coach the part of you that is feeling out of control and/or afraid. You can reassure it that she is going to get through this. Comfort her that “you” are there to take care of her and that her feelings matter. And encourage her to “let it go” and surrender to the process. You can also coach yourself by asking yourself these questions: Is what I am thinking Fact or Opinion? What part of this can I control and what parts do I need to let go of? Your body can also be a great coaching resource because it is also communicating with you. The question is, “Are we listening?” If you feel your body tensing, it may be reminding you to slow down, pause, say no to something, be aware of your situation and the emotions that are coming up for you. Take 3 minutes. Stop. Pause. Breathe. Ask yourself: What is most important here? Where can I give a little? What can I do differently to help manage my to-do list? It is a journey! Be in the moment, and remember: YOU matter! We would love to hear how this episode encouraged you! Be sure to reach out to us! Give us a “shout out” on your social media platforms! Thank you! In this episode, Sara shared some “ah-ha's” that she had recently as she has been serving on the board of One Tough Cookie, a non-profit that is on mission to support those battling cancer as well as the caregivers with care packages. Her involvement in a recent fundraiser spurred her to experience some deep fulfillment that is alignment with her purpose. Maybe you can relate to Sara who once believed that her career had to be in alignment with her purpose, which at times, left her feeling frustrated and lacking zeal. This involvement with a local non-profit has helped shift some of these paradigms. What she has discovered is that she can have a career (and may even enjoy what she is doing at work) but find more of her true passion and purpose outside of her career! How about you? Have you taken the time to think about what lights you up? What brings you the most joy and fulfillment? That may be your career, but it might be your relationships with family, your involvement at church or some other organization. And in today's episode, we want to give you permission to explore your purpose, even if that happens to be outside your role at work. Let us know where you most feel like you are living your purpose! With the end of the school year, planning vacations, summer camps, etc…this can be a crazy time of busyness, especially for us mams! New routines are coming, and we just want to check in with you to see how you are feeling about all of this busyness! Pause! Check in with your feelings! Do you do that? Or do you just scramble around, stressed out, trying to make it all happen? As mamas, we can easily run ourselves ragged and forget that we matter! In this episode we took a closer at busyness and the power of our thoughts, emotions, and how we “show up” in this transition and season. Here are some practical tips: Prep/Plan. Print off a calendar so you can see the next 3 month's activities. Say NO to some of the things that are not necessary or extra. Manage your thoughts. Stay in awareness. Delegate. Ask for help. Breathe. Remember to take time for YOU! Let us know which of these tips you found helpful and plan to apply to your busyness! We would love to hear how this episode encouraged or challenged you! Happy Mother's Day! With that being said, we wanted to take a little time on this episode to talk about the varying emotions that can be stirred up when it comes to this day called Mother's Day. We understand that for some of you this is a joyous day to be with your children, your mom, and/or loved ones. But for others of you, this day is a reminder of the pain of loss, the sorrow of “what you hoped motherhood would be like,” or maybe you are separated from your children and grieve the distance between you. Or perhaps you don't have a good, healthy relationship with your mom, so that is an internal battle, especially on the day we are told to honor our moms. Or maybe you have other emotions and circumstances we didn't mention. Regardless of the emotions that you have around Mother's Day, we want to assure you of one thing: We see you! Here are a few tips to help you prepare for any holiday that may (or has in the past) stirred up a lot of emotions: Be intentional to make a plan. How do you want the day to look? How do you want it to feel? What do you want to do for yourself? Manage your expectations. Don't set your hopes high without communicating what it is you need that day. Give yourself permission to feel the feels, and let them pass through you, envisioning releasing them. And for those that don't struggle with this day, remember to be an empathetic listener for those that have reasons for their emotions, and give a lot of grace. Does spring inspire you to begin something new? But trying new things can naturally create fear, worry, and doubts. Why is that? Why don't we choose to be excited about these new things? Excitement is a life-giving emotion that we get to choose! Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich, said this, “It takes the same amount of energy to imagine the worst than to imagine wild success.” (paraphrased) So why not imagine these new ventures bringing you wild success. Take time to pause, notice the beauty all around you. But also remember that when it appears that a part of your life is stalled and lifeless, be patient and continue to be diligent to “keep watering” those areas of your life, because there is LIFE under the surface. When you are not seeing the results you desire, wait and keep being faithful to the vision you have been given. Keep moving! And guard your heart against being influenced by those that are prone to discourage you, or jealous of what you are doing, etc. Protect your mind and heart to maintain that excitement. Let us know what NEW beginning you are embarking on! We hope this episode inspired you to take action despite the fear and worry! We would love to hear how this episode encouraged or challenged you! Are you feeling stuck in a pattern of thinking and living that you wish you could change? We all have a “voice” and a “listener” inside our heads. And oftentimes the “Chatty Cathy“ is running the show, talking constantly, and keeping us feeling stuck and powerless to change. In this episode, we take a closer look at that “voice” inside our heads. Bob Proctor has said, “The quality of one's life is in direct proportion to their level of awareness.” So in today's episode, we are shining a light on “that VOICE” that has been lying to you, discouraging you from taking on that new project, new job, new adventure, and we aim to help you become an objective listener to that chatter. Why is this helpful? Because when we become AWARE of our thoughts and feelings, as an objective, 3rd-party observer/listener, we can then make some non-judgemental observations and ask ourselves some questions like: 1.Is this thought/feeling true? 2. Is this thought/feeling serving me? 3. Is this thought/feeling in alignment with the person I aspire to be? 4. What thought/feeling would I like to have instead? 5. What is stopping me from believing this new thought/feeling? It is as if you start playing the objective counselor/advisor to that “voice” in your head! Who is going to start trying this? In today's episode, Lisa shares one principle that she has shared with her team: Work on YOU just as much as you work on your business! You can apply this principle to other areas of your life, such as relationships, your job, your fitness/health, your side-gig, etc. How could this look? Read books, listen to podcasts, be committed to online trainings….but don't just CONSUME and become a “fat baby” that never grows up. TAKE ACTION! Do the scary thing, figure out what your personality needs to stay focused on action (a pacing partner, a deadline, a reward/prize you work towards, an alarm on your phone set for 30 minute of ACTION…..and do it! A team of scientists in Ecuador is on a mission to describe new-to-science tarantula species to help secure conservation protections. And, undergraduate researchers pasted striped capes onto termites' backs to see if a well-known warning sign would fend off predators.Protecting The ‘Satan' Tarantula and Other Lovable Giant SpidersA team of scientists in Ecuador is on a mission to find and describe species of an understudied, often unpopular group of critters: mygalomorphs, a group of large, stocky spiders that includes tarantulas. In late 2023, two of these researchers published a paper in the journal ZooKeys describing two new-to-science tarantula species, including one named Psalmopoeus satanas—affectionately called the “Satan tarantula” because of its erratic behavior.Tarantulas are understudied in Ecuador, and there are many species left to describe. They're also threatened by mining, agriculture, and the illegal pet trade. That's what led Pedro Peñaherrera-R., a researcher at Universidad San Francisco de Quito to found the Mygalomorphae Research Group. Its members are working to describe these spiders and secure conservation protections before they possibly disappear.Producer Rasha Aridi talks with Peñaherrera-R. and his co-author and fellow group member Roberto José León about how the Satan tarantula earned its name, how they discover and classify spiders, and why we should all show spiders a little more love.If Termites Wore Stripes, Would Spiders Still Eat Them? The animal kingdom is filled with colors and patterns. Sometimes, those colors are to signal to members of an animal's own species, in a mating display for instance. In other cases, a bright color or vibrant pattern serves as a warning to potential predators—a signal saying “don't eat me, I'm toxic.” That type of warning coloration, known as aposematism, can be seen in the bright colors of a poison dart frog, or the black, white, and yellow stripes of a monarch butterfly caterpillar.Bigger animals, like birds, are known to consider that sort of warning signal when hunting. Researchers at the University of Florida were interested in whether jumping spiders might also take that sort of striped warning coloration into account when choosing their prey. To find out, they applied tiny striped capes to the backs of laboratory termites to study whether those stripes affected the behavior of hungry jumping spiders. They found that while the test spiders did notice the striped termites more than termites wearing solid colors, the spiders were less likely to attack striped termites when given the chance to do so.Behavioral ecologist Dr. Lisa Taylor joins Ira to discuss the purpose of the project—and former lead undergraduate researcher Lauren Gawel describes the challenges of trying to get termites to dress up as superheroes.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
