There's a row going on over who should run the nascent and potentially commercially valuable sports of padel and pickleball. This issue has a universal application across many sports, as NGBs seek to wrap their arms around what they might call strategic adjacencies. So, what are pros and cons of the LTA owning Padel and Pickleball. Is the NGB model the right one? Do we want or need every version of a sport to have its own governing body, or is the LTA just the best compromise solution when it comes to allocating money. Does the attribution incentive outlined above crowd out privately run Padel or Pickleball businesses or is the LTA helping to build a market for them? Our guests are Karen Mitchell and Alex Inglot.Karen is chair of Pickleball England, a former American Express executive who sits on the World Pickleball Federation's Board of Directors. Alex is a former Board member of the ATP Tennis Tour, an investor in padel projects in the UK and beyond, and founder of the All The Angles podcast covering the business of padel.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. Leaders Editorial Director James Emmett and Content Director David Cushnan run the rule over the stories moving the global sports industry needle this week. They're joined in the studio by Aquatics GB CEO Drew Barrand. Together they discuss the fallout from the Chinese doping story; and the CEO response to scandal: the motivating factors behind any move or statement and the stakeholder sensitivities that have to be accounted for. Fifa's big ambitions for the new look Mondial de Clubes and the carve-out that's tempting Apple to the rights negotiating table are also covered. Meanwhile, Cushnan had a front row seat for the premiere of the third part of Thomas Bach's Olympic Agenda trilogy: the IOC's AI Agenda, and he liked what he saw. Plus, why the NGB equation of performance + governance = not a lot of room for much else has to change; and what Aquatics GB are doing with the data behind the 550,000 streams of the recent British Championships. Leaders' Editorial Director James Emmett and Content Director David Cushnan sum up the sports industry week, joined in the studio by British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton. They reflect on the first edition of the Greater Bay Area International Sports Business Summit, held last weekend in Macau, and a new positivity around China's relationship with sport. There's also time to examine the abandonment of the DFL's plan to find a private equity partner for the Bundesliga, challenger sports trying to make it in the USA and Apple's new scores app. Then Dutton discusses preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games; how British Cycling is restructuring at a time when the national governing body model is “distressed”; the different rhythm of leadership required at an NGB versus his previous role as CEO of the Rugby League World Cup; and commercialising the men's and women's Tours of Britain.
This year, Kevin Klipstein will celebrate 20 years at the helm of US Squash, the national governing body for the racquet sport that has been steadily growing in participation and membership over that time. While the NGB has seen remarkable success through projects such as a national training center in Philadelphia, and exposure in new markets, the sport itself for years has been seeking a holy grail of sorts. That effort, of course, is a place on the Olympic program. That effort began with a campaign to get into the 2012 Games in London, and in each subsequent Games after that. But for one reason or another — and there were different reasons each time — the sport could never quite clear the hurdle. But when it came time to pitch for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, everything finally lined up perfectly. Squash was one of several sports approved for the program, which of course presents a whole new world of opportunity for leaders like Klipstein, who spend their entire days thinking about ways to expose the sport they love to even more people. And as you'll hear, one of the beauties of squash at that highest level is that its glass showcase courts can be stationed just about anywhere. In fact, international events have been staged outside the pyramids in Egypt and on building rooftops, to name a few. Where exactly it will be staged in Los Angeles remains to be seen — as will its potential place in the 2032 Games in Australia and beyond. But as you'll hear in this conversation, the sport has plans to grow regardless of its upcoming presence on sport's largest stage.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The African violet, a plant from Tanzania that came to the U.S. in the late 1800s, received a special honor from the National Garden Bureau (NGB). The organization named 2024 “The Year of the African Violet.” Other plants, flowers and vegetables for 2024 include: squash, Angelonia, lily, buddleia and hosta. Past years honored amaryllis, orchids and broccoli. Jessica Damiano is the garden writer for the Associated Press news service. She recently wrote about the African violet. Damiano said the violet has been one of the most popular house plants in the U.S. since it arrived. She said the plant, however, is not a violet. It only has the name because of its colorful, purple and white leaves. In fact, she noted, they are related to the Saintpaulia genus. They are named for German Walter von Saint Paul. The popularity of the plant is one reason why the NGB chose the violet as the “houseplant” of the year, said Diane M. Blazek, the organization's director. She said the plant's name has appeared over 300,000 times on social media. Beyond popularity, Blazek noted, the violets are easy to grow and people who breed flowers are working on creating new varieties. Blazek said, “they are coming through the pipeline.” Blazek said people once thought of the violets as “Grandma's plants,” or that they were no longer popular. But, she said, the violet “has not gone out of favor at all.” The NGB started in 1920. The group aimed to give reliable gardening information to Americans, many of whom had only recently started growing plants at home. The founder was James Burdett. He helped develop the idea of “victory gardens.” The gardens started during World War I as way for Americans to grow some of their own food.NGB Today, the NGB continues the work started by Burdett. It recommends plants, flowers and vegetables each year. Many people like the African violet because it is easy to grow. It does not need direct sunlight; it does not need too much water and does not need a lot of fertilizer. However, it must receive special care to do extremely well. Blazek said the plants like moisture in the air. So, if you live in a very dry place, they might not do well. If you bring them inside during winter, Damiano suggests, you should run a device that adds moisture to the air – a humidifier – before you take them back outside. They need warmth but do not do well in high heat. Be sure to consider your climate before planting them. In spring and summer, Damiano said, if the plants are indoors, place them near a window that faces north or east. That way they do not get too much sun. In the winter, the plants may be placed closer to windows because the sun is not too strong at that time for people who live in mid-northern climates. Feed the plants only every two to three months. Be sure to use a fertilizer for African violets. And do not worry about their roots getting crowded by other plants – they like cozy pots. With good care, the violets may show their colors all year.

In this Episode Scott welcomes the lovely Amely Joly to the podcast. Amely, currently living in Toulouse, France, is currently a womens pro roundnet player in Europe and also one of four board members on the European Roundnet Association. Her impact on the sport and in-particularly her commitment and work ethic to her role on the board of EURA is nothing short of inspiring which is one of the many reasons why Scott wanted to bring her on the podcast to discuss where her motivation comes from to growing the sport on a voluntary basis and also for the listeners to gain more of an insight into what goes on off the court and behind the scenes at the European Roundnet Association. While this episode discusses the details behind the scenes at EURA, it parallels incredibly well to other organisations, clubs, NGB and even boards at the IRF which also are doing these things behind closed doors and are the building blocks for the sports growth and development.
What's the role of a National Governing Body for sport in 2023? Is the NGB business model relevant or sustainable? These are questions running through this episode of The Squeezed Middle, our series created in collaboration with PTI Digital, the technology and strategy consultancy. Our focus is on the hugely popular sport of cycling, which at an elite level has been one of the great British success stories over the past two decades, creating a cast of superstar athletes and a haul of Olympic gold medals. But what was the impact of that success? And what does it tells us about how sport is run and the relationship between the two sides of the NGB's job, which is high performance and mass participation.Jon Dutton was appointed CEO of British Cycling in April this year, having held the same role at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup. Previous to that Dutton held senior roles across sport including the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart, PGA European Tour and UEFA, and is a Board member of the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships held in Glasgow this month.Joining the conversation is Ben Wells, CEO of PTI Digital. USA Gymnastics is looking to build a national training and wellness center that will serve as the hub for the national governing body and has issued a request of expressions of interest directed at destinations and real estate developers targeting a 2026 project completion, said President and Chief Executive Officer Li Li Leung during a discussion on the SportsTravel Podcast. The NGB is seeking a partner to design, build, operate and maintain a campus comprising a modern training and wellness center and ancillary facilities for the national team in various disciplines as well as develop the overall grassroots growth of the sport. USA Gymnastics does not have a centralized training and wellness center currently. The new center may also become home to the NGB's national headquarters. In this episode, Leung discusses why the NGB is seeking the new location as well as preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
[Link to watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/mljkjvUyJ4Y]In this episode, I want to share with you guys the life-changing lessons that I'm lucky enough to learn directly from my dad. Growing up, I've always known a man who's so determined and kind. I'm grateful to have been able to observe his lifestyle and work ethic from a young age, both of which have profoundly transformed me and shaped who I am today. Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful dads out there! Here are the lyrics to my original song, 'Tâm Sự Của Con' (My Confession)[Vietnamese lyrics]Ngày ấy khi còn bé thơ trong lòngBố thương mẹ chiều chẳng lo âu nghĩ suyNgày ấy đi học bố đưa mẹ đèoThấy con thân gầy mẹ chỉ lo con ốm thôiRồi lúc con biết đọc, biết thêm đánh đànBố khoe con với mọi người vui lắmDù những thứ con làm có khôn có dạiTrước sau bố mẹ vẫn tin chờRồi đến một ngày con lớn khôn đi làmThấy con bận rộn mẹ lại lo con ốm thôiRồi con cứ lớn dần, tóc bố thêm bạc màuThêm nếp nhăn cho mẹ vậy mà con xa quá điCàng thấy thương bố mẹ nuôi nấng con nên ngườiXong lúc con nên rồi lại chẳng thấyChỉ mong sao bố mẹ sống vui khoẻ mạnhNhớ con bố mẹ vẫn an lòng [English translation]Back when I was a little kid,Dad loved, Mom cared, no worry I hid.Back then, Dad walked me to school and Mom came along,Seeing me so skinny, Mom just worried I'd be weak, not strong. When I learned to read, and also play the piano,Dad showed me off to everyone, so proud, full of gusto. No matter if what I did was wise or silly,In the end, my parents always trusted me, really. Then came a day when I grew up, started to work,Seeing me so busy, Mom worried again I'd get sick due to overwork. As I kept growing, Dad's hair started turning gray,More wrinkles marked Mom's face, as I moved further away. The more I saw, the more I loved my parents who made me strong,I don't want to think about that some day, when I'm grown up but could no longer take them along.I just wish my parents live life, happy and healthy,Missing me, they still find peace, and are never weary. Bloom in Crisis is the embodiment of hope — it is a belief, a practice, a state of being that empowers you to skillfully regulate emotions, build spiritual resilience, enhance self-awareness, unleash the potential of your mind, foster a grateful heart, cultivate joy, nurture positive energy, promote inner peace, grow self-compassion and compassion for others, embrace the present moment, derive wisdom from introspection, transform pain into grace, recognize positive possibilities even in adversity, and actively shape your narrative, ultimately leading to a happy and fulfilled life (with a touch of style!)Welp... you're probably not going to remember all of these, and neither am I (!) which is why internalizing the concept of "bloom in crisis" instead of trying to memorize what it means is important. Luckily, we can all do it by practicing consistently. While I'm incredibly grateful for my journey, I know firsthand how painful and lonely it is to go through tough times alone — it urges me to give back and help others as much as I can in my lifetime. Bloom in Crisis has been transforming me and many others for the better, and I would love for you to give it a try!Believing that everyone is a bloomer and we #bloomincrisis together, I founded Bloom in Crisis to share with you how I practice it and what I've learned throughout my journey, which, I hope, will be helpful for you in yours.-Zip xx----------About Zip Nguyen: Zip was born and raised in Vietnam. Having previously examined the science informing the debate around Trans inclusion in Women's categories in sport, Broken Oars Podcast returns with an updated look at what remains fast-moving, ongoing and highly-contentious issue. During a recent conversation, Lewin and I turned again to discuss what had happened since our first discussion of these issues, particularly with regards to highly-contentious issue of natal-men being allowed to compete against natal-women in sport; the pressures faced by NGB's to promote a sport-for-all approach in the face of quite incendiary activism on the Trans side and pushback on the women's side; and the questions of fairness and inclusivity that must be at the heart of every discussion. Upon reviewing our intiial conversation, we decided that, on occasion, we had been too flippant about what is a serious subject. You will know, as regular listeners, that we take very little seriously, including ourselves, and treat everyone as fair game, including ourselves. On this occasion, however, we realised that given how inflammatory some of the rhetoric, language, case-making and arguments have been in the discussion to date, what was needed was a sober look at the facts and realities of Trans biology, inclusion, and the current policies of rowing's regulatory bodies - and what they mean for the current state of play. So here it is ... Full Crew. From backstops. The first movement is down and it doesn't have to be fast. You aren't grabbing the last sausage roll at the party. Attention ...

Correction on this episode, we mentioned Ireland, but it should be Northern Ireland which is part of the UK. On episode 77 of Tatami Talk. We start off talking about the American Judo Systems upcoming tournament on June 4th named "SUMMER SLAM". How this tournament is for USA Judo points, as well as the interesting prizes for the youth division and senior elite division. Then we go into some viewer question/feedback. With the first two part questions being. Are the federation dues for USA Judo, USJF and USJF too high? And is it harming Judo's growth in the US? The second part of the question was would a discount or reward program help grow Judo? Like discounts on tickets for hotels and flights as well as stores and restaurants. Could this help grow and bring people to Judo. Like what they do in other countries? The other two part question was can someone be promoted to Black Belt or get promotions in general just for being a class assistant and not practicing themselves or going to tournaments. With the further question of can someone that doesn't step on the mat and only does office or volunteer work be promoted to Black Belt? This is a very interesting question and you may be surprised by our answers. * Intro / AJS Summer Slam [0:00] * Viewer question: USJA/USJF/USAJ membership price and its affects on growth of judo in the US [06:27] * NGB helping marketing judo [28:55] * Parents and kyu grades involvement in volunteering [42:35] * Getting a brown belt / shodan for assisting [52:09] * Terminal Brown belts [58:50] * Honorary Black belts / Getting a Shodan by only doing office work / volunteering [01:05:35] * Separate types of belts / ranks [01:10:49] ------------------------------------------- Email us: tatamitalk@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram: @tatamitalk Juan: @thegr8_juan Anthony: @anthonythrowsIntro + Outro by Donald Rickert: @donaldrickertCover Art by Mas: @masproducePodcast Site: https://anchor.fm/tatamitalk Also listen on Apple iTunes, Google podcasts, Google Play Music and Spotify

Working predominantly in GAA, Kevin uses a Constraint Led Approach to help players develop, and more importantly, create a long-term love for the game. Phil Andrews is credited with making multiple changes for the better over a decade of service at USA Weightlifting, including the past six years as CEO, and overseeing an elite team that at the Tokyo Olympics took home its first Olympic silver in women's weightlifting. Among his challenges at the governing body was a deep debate internationally over the future of the sport, one that very well may see weightlifting removed from the Olympic program in future years over concerns about their approach, or lack thereof, to doping at the international level. Andrews was a fighter for the anti-doping cause, an effort that he pushed as he also fought to expand the sport of weightlifting to the widest audience possible in the United States. In July, he was named CEO of USA Fencing, an organization that has had its own challenges in recent years, especially in areas surrounding SafeSport. But it's an organization with an even larger membership than weightlifting — around 40,000 members compared to about 30,000 — and one that produces some sizable events, including its Summer Nationals, which were most recently held at the convention center in Minneapolis. Andrews will spend the next few months on a listening tour among his new constituents, but before he does, he sat down with SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz to discuss his own history in the sport, the future of the NGB's events, its desires to partner more with potential host cities and how in the world light sabers may fit into the equation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This episode revisits a conversation with Tom Rooks, the Director of Rowing at Williamsburg Boat Club, in Williamsburg, VA. When we talked with him back in 2021, we loved how authentic he was. From his "fun first" mantra to how he prepares his juniors athletes to be better humans beyond the boathouse. Tom was one of our favorite guests - sharing his philosophies about saving lives, being well-rounded, and finding your calling. Since then, Tom's been hired by USRowing as its Health and Well-Being Associate. This title doesn't do justice to the work he's doing there, ensuring that our NGB, local clubs, and regattas have procedures in place to keep athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers safe - from PFDs to hydration tablets, safety education, and emergency plans. Ladies and Gentlemen, to celebrate our fiftieth release we have brought you ... (Drum roll ....) The Head of British Rowing! (And in case you were wondering, Hodge, the rest of Mark's body is still attached). Now, the clever among you (hullo all natural bowsiders) will be quick to point out that this is actually Episode 38. But because of our numbering system and our extra Broken Thoughts and Broken Doors Indoors episodes, we have reached a podcast landmark. That's right - 50 dollops of high quality content. (You can argue about the high quality appellation among yourselves), spread over two glorious years (when most of you though we wouldn't last the week. Okay. Just us. We thought we wouldn't last the week). We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate this landmark than by welcoming Mark Davies on for a chat. Like our episode with Drew Ginn, this episode has been a long time in the making. We first had a chat with Mark about coming on back in lockdown 1.0. However, all good things come to those who wait (a metaphor for a rowing finish if ever we heard one), and this is a good thing. A rower and successful Boat Race cox in his own right, and a founder member and driving force behind Crabtee, Mark's work in the private sector led to roles with British Archery and then the hottest of hot seats when he became Chair of British Rowing. This chat touches on his trajectory through the sport through to this role, offering a fascinating and even-handed insight into the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities the NGB has in its oversight of the sport. Driven by the belief that an essential part of his role is to leave the sport in a better place than he found it (which, in truth, is a stewardship responsibility we all share), he talks open and candidly about British Rowing's progress in this regard. From the essential need to balance the books to stopping the relentless churn of rowers (10,000 leave the sport every year ...) and where we might be if we could slow and then stop that to the reset opportunities that Covid provided, why rowing has been undersold in this country and the social and cultural impact the sport can have if we change that, to the Zoom Ergos revolution, the importance of community and the next four years ... This is essential listening. And yes, we always say that. And yes, we always mean it. But this is the Chair of British Rowing, who admits he and his team have faced their fair share of criticism and opprobrium talking openly, clearly and passionately about how we can all be the guardians of our sport and see it thrive. Get some! Head single. No. We've Already Done That Joke. We Really Are Going To Have to Chop Your Head Off. Why? Have You Seen Your Finish? Criminal.
