This week, we're scratching The Itch to get amphibious and delirious! We saw some toads, some frogs, and some excellent bands, and now it's time to talk about it. First, Aaron pivots his original plans in favor of an impromptu free (or suggested donation) street fest performance by Lip Critic and Delivery Boys. Will The Itch become fans of yet MORE New York acts? Then he sees some familiar faces in recent guests Toadies and perennial favorites Local H, along with Dallas's own Vandoliers in a night full of cow punk, nasty riffs, falling flags, and a Local H set that had a theme! Finally, KC and Dan check out Les Claypool pulling triple duty playing for Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and The Frog Brigade all in one night! When your night involves the son of a Beatle, a drummer with good taste, and something about cockroaches, it's probably gonna be a good time. And we hope you have a good time hearing about it. Enjoy. Welcome to Public Broadcast, the brand new podcast feed from Public Record Online, brought to you by listeners like you and our sponsor, Hello Merch. Formerly known as WASTOIDS, Public Record is your home for art, culture and music—not optimized for the algorithm, but optimized for care, preservation, and archiving. This week: Sean Lennon. The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Sean is a lifelong musician himself. In the ‘90s, he was signed to the Beastie Boys adventurous Grand Royal Records, which released his debut, 1998's Into the Sun. He followed it up in 2006 with Friendly Fire, released on Capitol Records, and he's played in a dizzying array of bands and projects, including Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Mystical Weapons, and his mom's band, the Plastic Ono Band. He's also in a group with Les Claypool called The Claypool Lennon Delirium, with Primus bassist Les Claypool. They're out on the road now, a traveling circus of rock music that features Primus, The Frog Brigade, and the Claypool Lennon Delirium, which means Les is playing three sets a night, and Sean is playing two—as he's sitting in with the Frog Brigade in addition to his project with Les. Their new album is called The Great Parrot Ox and the Golden Age of Empathy, a psychedelic pop opus that's also a concept album about the role of humanity in the age of AI. Ahead of the tour rolling through Phoenix on June 30th, we caught up with Sean to talk technology, his mother's art and the squares who still don't get it, and whether or not he has any plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his album Friendly Fire…but first…are we merely meat machines? Let's dive in and discuss. You can find a full transcript of this chat at publicrecord.online, where you can also scope our other shows, interviews, news reports, and more.

He came of age in the kaleidoscopic '90s, working with Cibo Matto and issuing his first solo album, 1998's Into the Sun, on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label, while beginning a long stint playing in his mother Yoko Ono's band. In the following decade he formed the psychedelic duo the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and the improvisational prog group Mystical Weapons. As his musical interests expanded further, he teamed with Les Claypool to form the hard-to-categorize project the Claypool Lennon Delirium, branched out into film scoring, explored more mainstream territory as he worked with artists like Lana Del Ray, Lady Gaga and Lily Allen, and delved into jazz as well. His first foray into that style was 2024's Asterisms, a fully instrumental album of electronics-fused jazz and psychedelic soundscape music. The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Lennon was born in New York City in 1975. During his childhood, he was educated in Swiss boarding schools, but occasionally appeared on his mother's albums and sang on the 1984 Ono tribute Every Man Has a Woman. In his early teens, he was occasionally seen decked out in a plastic Thriller jacket and hanging out with Michael Jackson, but his first official step into the spotlight was in the form of filmed interviews for the 1988 documentary Imagine: John Lennon. Three years later, he organized -- with Ono and Lenny Kravitz -- a star-studded re-recording of his father's "Give Peace a Chance" as a protest to the Gulf War. That year, he also appeared on Kravitz's album Mama Said.” Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi.In 2025, Sean is working on a new Claypool Lennon Delirium album (their 3rd) and is directing a documentary film on the crazy genius fashion designers 3as4, who have designed outfits for Bjork and Yoko among many others. Her remarkable prowess on the bass guitar soon landed her a number of high-profile television gigs spanning America's Got Talent to backing up pop star Julia Michaels on TODAY. By the end of her senior year at NYU, Rykman's virtuoso talent and infectious spirit saw her invited to join pianist Marco Benevento's band (as recommended by Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz), with whom she performed countless shows including dates with Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. Rykman soon formed her own namesake band, accompanied by Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums). She quickly earned a reputation as a mesmerizing, unmissable live act, lighting up an array of international stages with headline sets, show-stealing festival performances (including Bonnaroo, Peach Music Festival, and Sweetwater 420 Fest), shows alongside Khruangbin, Guster, and The Disco Biscuits (among others), and recent appearances sitting in with the 8G Band on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. That same spellbinding power was soon captured on a series of independent singles, including “Elevator” and the million-streaming “Plants,” both of which have now been newly enhanced for Rykman's debut album, JOYRIDE. Written and recorded with childhood friend, producer Gabe Monro, the album serves as a vivid canvas for Rykman's vibrant expression and chameleonic songcraft. JOYRIDE features Trey Anastasio as co-producer and featured musician, contributing guitar on five of the album's nine tracks.   About OBJECT HEAVY Object Heavy is Northern California's hardest hitting Soul sensation. Les Claypool is a musical mad scientist and one of the weirdest musicians to have commercial success in rock and roll. He's best known for his amazing bass playing and quirky sense of humor in leading the band Primus (and for doing the theme for South Park), but he's also put together a handful of other really cool projects that made other types of music. Including Oysterhead, the funk jazz supergroup with Trey Anastasio from Phish and Stewart Copeland from The Police. The Duo de Twang country music project. And, most recently, the awesome partnership with Sean Lennon called The Claypool Lennon Delirium with Sean Lennon. He produces most of his music from his home studio Rancho Relaxo and is also an author and film director. Oh, and he once auditioned for Metallica. Is there anything he can't do? Let's find out. Our show is sponsored by Boldfoot Socks and McCusker's Tavern at 17th and Shunk Streets in Philadelphia. In this episode, Dr. Leah and Taraleigh talk with bassist Karina Rykman about her immense love of live music and journey of becoming a professional musician herself. She shares her philosophy of saying yes to aligned offers, even when fear and imposter syndrome pop up. She discusses how she is a “rejector of traditional ways of being” and how she learned to play bass and guitar strictly by watching and listening to her musical influences. Karina recounts her early live music experiences and discovers that attending Bonnaroo in 9th grade with the Anastasio family was what really hooked her in the jam scene. For the “Did you Know” Dr. Leah shares how certain live music can feel like a coming “home” and the entry into a world never thought possible. Taraleigh encourages listeners to reflect on their hook into live music in the “Daily Jam.” Karina Rykman plays bass, sings, jumps around, and laughs a lot. In doing so, she has garnered a rare attention and avid listenership. Straddling the worlds of jam rock and indie pop drenched in psychedelia, Karina's effervescent presence comes to life in musical form. With only six singles released, Karina has built a reputation as an unmissable live act. Her debut single “Plants” reached over a million streams, with the other singles not far behind. She can hardly contain herself about her yet-to-be-released debut studio record, as the best is truly yet to come. Karina's power trio sounds larger than the sum of their parts. With Adam November (Guitar/Looper/Effects) and Chris Corsico (Drums), Karina has headlined clubs across America, bringing her rapturous unbridled energy to her reciprocally passionate fans. In 2016, Karina joined Marco Benevento's band on bass. With Benevento, she's opened for Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. We'd be remiss to exclude her television appearances on The Today Show, America's Got Talent, a feature on ABC7, and most recently, in the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Salute the Songbird with Maggie Rose

Bassist Karina Rykman joined Marco Benevento's band as a replacement to Dave Dreiwitz (Ween /Joe Russo's Almost Dead) in 2016 and since then, has developed a permanent and powerful presence in the band, playing headlining shows, festival sets, and opening for bands such as Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and more. Karina is Maggie's guest this week and the two discuss growing up in New York City, where she became obsessed with The Allman Brothers, what it means to have ‘broad musical ears', and the wisdom she gained from a mentor that helps her deal with imposter syndrome.Aside from her gigs with Benevento, Karina's musical résumé has almost grown too large to keep track of, but includes highlights we'd be remiss to exclude: a performance on the Today Show with Julia Michaels, a now-famous soundcheck at Madison Square Garden with Phish, playing in the backing band (in front of Howard Stern and co. at Radio City Music Hall) on America's Got Talent with a flame-spewing helmet on her head, gigs with the Everyone Orchestra alongside members of moe., The Disco Biscuits, Soulive, Robert Randolph, + many more) and finally, the formation of her own band.Karina put out two singles in 2019: Plants and Elevator, as well as two more in 2020 (City Kids & Dirty South) – the songs have garnered six-figure streaming numbers + air time on Satellite radio. A few live highlights include opening for Khruangbin at The Capitol Theatre, playing moe.down and Hulaween, and a plethora of headlining shows for ravenous fans. The group has welcomed special guests including Nels Cline, Robert Walter, Skerik, + more.

A few weeks ago, I traveled to Rhode Island for NECON 38, the 38th edition of Northeastern Writers Conference. It's also known as Camp NECON, and it is attended mostly by horror writers, aspiring horror writers like myself, and fans. It was my first time at the conference, but it didn't feel that way. It is a professional conference, with a full slate of panels on writing and horror-related art, but it is also very social. The regulars think of themselves as family, and that is very much the spirit of the event. I felt very welcomed in this group of misfits who have chosen a demanding vocation, and one that outsiders might have a hard time understanding. There's an immediate bond amongst these people, and I will surely be back for future editions.  This is the backdrop for my interview with David Wellington, who writes horror like the Monster Island/Monster Nation/Monster Planet zombie series, his vampire series which includes 13 Bullets and 99 Coffins, and his latest zombie novel, Positive. He has also written a science fiction series which includes the books Forsaken Skies, Forgotten Worlds, and Forbidden Suns under the name C. Nolan Clark. It only occurred to me after the interview, as I was putting this episode together, that Wellington is partly responsible for me being there in the first place. I have always enjoyed horror, but it wasn't until around 2005 or so that I really fell in love with it while researching a story on zombie culture for a magazine. I read Wellington's insanely inventive Monster series, as well many other zombie books and graphic novels, including books by another NECON attendee, Brian Keene. I had planned to interview Wellington back then, but the piece never materialized. I was left with an appreciation for the genre, and Wellington's work in particular, and started writing some of my own horror.  So it was great to finally sit down with him, face to face, during the conference and talk about his career trajectory, which has been amazing. I learned he was working at the U.N. while he was writing the Monster series, which turned out to be incredibly fortuitous timing for Wellington. His first love was science fiction, but horror was a fun diversion, and it's what gave him his first success. Wellington has now written about zombies, werewolves, and vampires, so we talk about which was more fun to create, and finally getting to write those sci-fi books. We also make a diversion into Hannah Gadsby's latest stand-up comedy special, Nanette, which Wellington brought up. It has been amazing to watch that spread, and how it has made people who maybe never thought about the mechanics of stand-up comedy dive deep into the topic.  You can find out more about David Wellington at www.DavidWellington.net and follow him on Twitter at @LastTrilobite. The featured track this week is “Cousins” by Beanpole from the album All My Kin, out August 31 on Chimera Music. These songs were recorded in the late 80s and early 90s as a collaboration between Claypool and Larry LaLonde from Primus and Derek Greenberg and Adam Gates of The Spent Poets. Some of the music on this album sounds less like a Primus album than it does Claypool's theme song from South Park. If there were some demented network full of shows for which Claypool exclusively wrote the theme songs, this would be the collected works. I think I would enjoy “Beanpole,” “Chicken Boy,” “Sponge Boy,” and “Monkey Boy” in an evening line-up.  Claypool is often the dominant voice in any project, but that's less true here. He is very present on All My Kin, but more in the spirit of the lyrics and the tone than anything else. There are no bass pyrotechnics in these songs. Claypool might not have even played bass on some of the tracks. During the sessions, people were encouraged to play instruments other than their main instrument and not to think too much about what they were doing. The result is predictably strange and spontaneous.  The story goes that when Claypool proposed releasing these recording on his Prawn Song imprint, not only did his distributor decline, they dropped the label. That seems short-sighted to say the least, but thankfully Sean Lennon knew better. He heard the tapes on tour with The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and decided to release the album on his Chimera Music label.
