Anyone who knows The Go-Go's knows they got the beat. But in the recent television documentary about them, fans also learn the true story of how they got it, lost it, and found it again. The film shows where The Go-Gos are today: making new music together for the first time in 20 something years. We catch up with drummer, Gina Schock and listen, mesmerized as she tells her incredible story. Gina Schock, born Regina Ann Schock in Baltimore, Maryland, is celebrated as the powerhouse drummer of The Go-Go's, one of the most influential all-female rock bands in history. Raised in a working-class neighbourhood, Gina discovered her passion for drumming as a teenager, teaching herself the craft and dreaming of a life in music. Her ambition led her to move to Los Angeles in the late 1970s, where she joined The Go-Go's in 1979, just as the band began making waves in the punk scene. The Go-Go's were pioneers, becoming the first all-women band to achieve mainstream success while writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Gina's hard-hitting, high-energy drumming became a key element of the band's signature sound, driving hits like We Got the Beat, Vacation, and Our Lips Are Sealed. The band's debut album, Beauty and the Beat (1981), topped the Billboard 200 for six weeks, establishing The Go-Go's as trailblazers in both pop and rock music. Despite their success, the band faced challenges, including grueling tours and internal tensions, leading to their initial breakup in 1985. During this time, Gina underwent heart surgery for a congenital defect, a personal challenge that underscored her resilience. Post-Go-Go's, she pursued songwriting and producing, contributing to projects for stars like Miley Cyrus (Breakout) and Selena Gomez. She also ventured into acting and photography, showcasing her multifaceted creativity. The Go-Go's reunited several times over the years, maintaining their legacy through tours, new music, and a Broadway musical, Head Over Heels, which featured their songs. Their enduring influence was cemented when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, a milestone highlighting their groundbreaking achievements. Beyond music, Gina is also known for her vivacious personality, humour, and advocacy for women in the arts. She remains an inspiring figure, balancing her love for music with personal passions like photography and sharing her life story to empower future generations of musicians. Gina Schock joins us this week to provide an insight into her amazing world. If you'd like to know what songs she wrote, how she got her start, what life has been like for her over the years ... then you've come to the right place. I'm certain you'll enjoy hearing Gina Schock tell her story.

On Episode 120 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis interviews the legendary JESSE HARMS! Jesse is an American musician and songwriter who was the keyboardist and background vocalist for Sammy Hagar on his Three Lock Box Tour, as well as on his 1984 album, VOA, and the tour supporting that record. Interestingly, when Sammy joined Van Halen in 1985, Jesse found himself working briefly for the previous VH lead singer David Lee Roth in 1986; in fact, he provides keyboards on one of Roth's biggest hits, “Goin' Crazy”. Famously, Jesse also wrote the hit song “Walk on Water”, which was recorded by Eddie Money. He also toured with Eddie, and wrote and toured with REO Speedwagon as well. The list goes on and on as it pertains to the artists with whom Jesse has worked… Bad English, Guitar Shorty, Patty Smyth, and the McAuley Schenker Group to name just a few. In 2005 Harms purchased Marin Music Center in Novato, California which he operated until he sold it in 2019. Jesse recently released a 6CD set named ALL SIDES. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Gina Schock of the Go-Go's joins the Rocker Dog podcast to introduce us to her Chihuahua rescue Penny. Gina's book Made In Hollywood: All Access with The Go-Go's is out now.
Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock brought the beat to “We Got the Beat” and elevated that band with her powerful, disciplined attack. She was hooked on muscular rock with her first concert, a one-time-only double bill of the Who and Led Zeppelin. After touring behind a star of John Waters' Pink Flamingos, Schock joined the Go-Go's, and that band took off. How did her fierce work ethic go over with her bandmates? What were recording sessions like? What made the distribution of songwriting credits and finances so unfair? In Schock's new coffee table book, Made in Hollywood: All Access with the Go-Go's, bassist Kathy Valentine says, “The drummer rules the band.” The passionate, enthusiastic Schock rules Caropop as well.
On this episode of the It's Only Rock And Roll Podcast, we talk to drummer GINA SCHOCK, the outspoken, hard-rocking heartbeat behind rock's first #1 charting all-female band, The Go-Go's. Gina gives us a peek into her inner sanctum, pulling out some of her favorite 45's from an immense collection of not only vinyl, but additionally forty plus years of Go-Go's memorabilia – much of which is featured in her new coffee-table photobook: “Made In Hollywood – All Access With The Go-Go's”. She also offers a frank history of the band, from their meteoric rise from the underground punk scene to the top of the charts with hits like “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got The Beat”, as well as how a conflict over royalties almost scotched the band permanently. ---------------------------------- ֎ The Official GO-GO's Website – http://www.gogos.com ֎ To order “Made In Hollywood – All Access With The Go-Go's” - https://amzn.to/388ZWea Visit the 'It's Only Rock And Roll PODCAST' online at: ● Homepage – www.ItsOnlyRockAndRollPodcast.com ● Facebook – facebook.com/ItsOnlyRockAndRollPodcast/ ● YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCFB7uJ3dg4IKSxsNny9Jiw/videos ● Instagram - @itsonlyrockandrollpodcast Be sure to check out our all-new OFFICIAL IORR PODCAST STORE!
