In this episode, I was thrilled to welcome historian—and fellow Missourian—Kimberly Harper to the show. I am especially delighted by this episode because I get many requests to feature guests who have written history books while off of the tenure track or outside of academia, and Kim is a great example of that. I find guests for the show in a lot different ways – sometimes they are people I am a longtime fan of, other times I see books getting some press, or they pitch themselves for the show or other people suggest them. But I also scan catalogs of upcoming books to make sure I'm catching things that might otherwise get overlooked, and that's how I first learned about Kimberly Harper. I spotted her new book, Men of No Reputation: Robert Boatright, the Buckfoot Gang, and the Fleecing of Middle America in the University of Arkansas Press catalog, and got to read an early copy. I was so impressed by the research and storytelling that I knew I had to reach out right away, and lucky for us, Kim agreed to come on the show. Kimberly Harper earned a master's degree in history from the University of Arkansas, and she is an editor for the Missouri Historical Review. Her first book, White Man's Heaven: The Lynching and Expulsion of Blacks in the Southern Ozarks, 1894-1909, came out in 2010, and it received the Missouri Humanities Council's Distinguished Achievement in Literature award. Kim and I spoke about how some key mentors helped her find her way as a historian and writer, how she is learning to balance her day job, writing, and family life, and how you deal with sources for a book in which everyone is lying. Enjoy my conversation with Kimberly Harper.

Philip Van Cise faced a double threat when he became Denver's district attorney in 1921. He quickly discovered that a massive bunco ring was operating unimpeded in downtown Denver, fleecing unsuspecting rubes out of enormous amounts of money. In addition, the Ku Klux Klan was gaining popularity across the state - winning key elections as it encouraged vigilantism and threatened many Denver citizens. My guest, Alan Prendergast, tells Van Cise's story in his new book, "Gangbuster: One Man's Battle Against Crime, Corruption, and the Klan". Clay Newcomb is joined by veteran Meateater videographers Loren Moulton and Dave Gardner as well as Brent Reaves, who you can now hear every Friday on this same feed on his new podcast This Country Life. The crew recaps the triumphs and pitfalls of chasing those wisened longbeards in the spring woods before turning their attention to Forest, or should we say Asa, Carter's “The Education of Little Tree.” The crew discusses how remarkable it is that Asa Carter was able to pull off this deception, whether or not this was an arc of repentance and redemption or if it was just a con, and the decision to give this to their kids to read or not. During the First World War, the Ottoman Empire established a wide network of camps to house prisoners of war from the allied powers. Like most, the conditions were often poor, the treatment often harsh and the complexes often established in some of the most remote, rural and desolate landscapes. Yozgat was one such camp, comprising a small collection of buildings in a rural town commandeered by the Ottoman Army to house British officers. Whilst its conditions were not the harshest, nor its prisoners the most dangerous, it became the scene for one of the most bizarre tales of escape that the first world war and just about any incarceration, anywhere in the world, would ever see, involving buried treasure, a Ouija board and an audacious pair of pranksters with a strong desire to get home. Legendary New York City police detective Thomas F. Byrnes once described Bertha Heyman as "one of the smartest confidence women in America." And she was considered among New York City police to be, “the boldest and most expert of the many female adventuresses who infested the country” at the close of the 19th century. Let's meet this so-called Confidence Queen.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
His medical contemporaries once considered him to be a "clever, money-mad neuropath." But what makes Dr. Albert Abrams a bit different than other charlatans we'll meet this season is that though he was dismissed within the medical community for quackery in his time, he probably wasn't a guy running a con – at least not on purpose. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Their crimes may vary, but con artists have this one thing in common: the power of persuasion to take advantage of people. And in this episode, we're talking about how one woman known as Madame Rachel took advantage of Victorian high society with her pricey promises of eternal youth. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It was a charming and persuasive man named William Thompson who is considered to have been the original confidence artist – although that's a title that's probably difficult to pin down. Welcome to a new season of Criminalia, where we'll be talking about master swindlers, offering things too good to be true throughout history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Earlier episodes have focused on tools and aspects that can help to bring more confidence in your life. In this episode we focus on some of the more specific areas of confidence for men. While the language favors men, anyone can listen and learn something.
What three things would you want for a prison escape? Would a ouija board, a strong imagination and a credulous captor be on your list? They were key tools in 1916 for two prisoners of war in the First World War who carried out one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the genre, without breaking a sweat. They're the subject of author and journalist Margalit Fox's latest book 'The Confidence Men'.
Best-selling author Margalit Fox joins Jon today to talk about her new book The Confidence Men, the incredible true-life prison-break tale of two British WWI officers who escaped from a Turkish jail. Even better, the officers pulled one over on their captors using a homemade Ouija board. Margo is a gifted storyteller, having worked on the New York Times' obituaries section as a senior writer for years, penning wonderfully engaging narratives, and making obituaries into mini-biographies that became viral must-reads. Here, Margo talks to Jon about The Confidence Men and what the business world can learn from this escape story, and how, at the Times, she became one the best living writers about death.

Episode one forty five - part two Former NYT Reporter turned full time writer Margalit Fox zoomed in from the ether to tell us all about her latest narrative non-fiction book Confidence Men, a true story involving two prisoners of war (WWI) who elaborately conned their captors into facilitating their escape by way of a make-shift ouija board and a few well staged seances. Gertrude Stein makes a significant appearance in this story as well -- though not in a way you could imagine. We promise, this is one non-fiction book that will have your jaw dropping at every turn.
Margalit Fox joins the show to discuss her new book about a World War I prison escape that is practically too strange to believe. It is a tale of war, the Ottoman Empire, prison breaks, and...Ouija Boards? In her fourth book, The Confidence Men, Fox brings to life a story that was all but forgotten, during a period that few know: World War I on the Ottoman Front. This is a conversation not to be missed.

This episode The Rock n Roll Archaeologist goes toe to toe with the Rock N Roll Criminologist! Join Christian as he welcomes guest Jake Brennan of the hit podcast Disgraceland. Jake has a new book on the streets that takes the rock n roll crime drama podcast and puts it in writing this time! We go dig into the book and on Jake's journey from born musician to podcast hero! You may know Jerry Lee Lewis married his thirteen-year-old cousin but did you know he shot his bass player in the chest with a shotgun or that a couple of his wives died under extremely mysterious circumstances? Or that Sam Cooke was shot dead in a seedy motel after barging into the manager's office naked to attack her? Maybe not. Would it change your view of him if you knew that, or would your love for his music triumph?Real rock stars do truly insane thing and invite truly insane things to happen to them; murder, drug trafficking, rape, cannibalism and the occult. We allow this behavior. We are complicit because a rock star behaving badly is what's expected. It's baked into the cake. Deep down, way down, past all of our self-righteous notions of justice and right and wrong, when it comes down to it, we want our rock stars to be bad. We know the music industry is full of demons, ones that drove Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Sid Vicious and that consumed the Norwegian Black Metal scene. We want to believe in the myths because they're so damn entertaining.DISGRACELAND is a collection of the best of these stories about some of the music world's most beloved stars and their crimes. It will mix all-new, untold stories with expanded stories from the first two seasons of the Disgraceland podcast. Using figures we already recognize, DISGRACELAND shines a light into the dark corners of their fame revealing the fine line that separates heroes and villains as well as the danger Americans seek out in their news cycles, tabloids, reality shows and soap operas. At the center of this collection of stories is the ever-fascinating music industry--a glittery stage populated by gangsters, drug dealers, pimps, groupies with violence, scandal and pure unadulterated rock 'n' roll entertainment.Jake Brennan is a Boston based musician who launched, Disgraceland, "a rock 'n' roll true crime podcast" in February 2018 to great acclaim. Jake grew up in music. He saw the Ramones play live when he was ten years old and began recording and touring at a young age, first with his band Cast Iron Hike and then with his bands the Confidence Men and Bodega Girls. His songs have been featured in film and television, however Jake thinks his coolest musical accomplishment was opening for Fugazi "back in the day." What is it like to run a compliance program that encompasses over 190 countries? Today we have Gwen Hassan, Managing Counsel and Trade Compliance Counsel for Global Compliance for CNH Industrial. She runs their compliance program globally, and today we’re talking about international trade, working with multiple cultures, and practical ways to step up in your career. Trade Compliance Trade compliance can be divided into three categories: (1) import, or bringing products into the country, (2) export, or moving products out and across borders, and (3) trade as a political tool, which includes things like boycotts and sanctions and denied parties. If you’re starting out with trade compliance, start with trade sanctions. These apply universally regardless of which side of the exchange you’re on, and it’s very easy to find the law. Best practice trade compliance programs A solid program will cover the three areas mentioned above: A program that addresses import risk and compliance, involving team members who are customs brokers, people who are licensed to conduct transactions through the import into the United States. The export side of your program, where you must be aware of all the different regulations that apply. Have a handle on your sanctions. Do you have a system for screening to make sure you’re not violating sanctions or restrictions of any kind? Going global A global role isn’t just “shifting” from a regional role — it’s akin to biting the whole apple at one time. Gwen’s advice? Get as much experience as you can on global projects, work on projects that span multiple regions or involve regions you’re not currently working on. Be the first to volunteer for these. And then make sure you have cultural or language skills, because they are a big deal. It’s easy to underestimate the impact of culture on a global team, so one of Gwen’s biggest challenges has been to learn not only to accept the cultural differences but find a way to work within them and get to the place you need to go. This requires some creativity and strategy, but it’s a challenge she enjoys a lot. Building international relationships There’s no replacing good old fashioned frequent flyer miles. Being face to face with people is so vitally important, especially in a number of cultures. Gwen recommends breaking bread with someone, sitting down for a meal, and getting to know each other on a personal level. Until you can establish that kind of trusting relationship with a person, it will be difficult to have a work relationship with them. Also, when you’re developing relationships with people, it’s easy to assume that your mindset and frame of reference is “the right one”. But people are coming into this relationship with their own frame of reference which they believe to be correct as well. Identify and acknowledge these so you can find a way to work well together. Confidence Men apply for jobs they aren’t fully qualified for all the time. Women, not so much. How can we boost our confidence? Talk about the skills and knowledge you do have, be transparent about the gap, and then highlight your ability to learn. Talk about times when you’ve had to learn things quickly, how you went about it, and how you got it to a level that benefited the company. Talk about that skill set and how motivated you are to get there. Resources Gwen Hassan | The International Lawyer | Baker McKenzie

Chris DeRose has written a terrific book about a little understood period of American history, those years between the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the first session of Congress under the Constitution in 1789. Founding Rivals: Madison vs. Monroe, The Bill of Rights, and The Election that Saved a Nation Beyond the story of Madison and Monroe, one thing that struck me time and again was how similar the country’s problems were as a nascent nation and today as a world superpower. The very first tax bill that came before Congress went nowhere and was punted to a “Committee”. Really. On day one of the first session of Congress, the country had a “staggering” $54 million debt, 12% of which was owned by foreign governments. Sound familiar? Madison did a study of failed governments throughout history and the common thread he discovered was paralysis. They were no longer able to govern. Super committee anyone? Overseas rivals mocking our government’s ability to function, not to mention our balance sheet. China and Russia do this regularly. Even intransigent politicians ignoring directives goes back to our Founding. When Pulitzer-prize winner Ron Suskind joined us to talk Confidence Men, he told a story about Treasury Secretary Geithner ignoring a directive from President Obama to break apart Citigroup. Geithner disagreed so he simply ignored it. In Founding Rivals, the order was to strike a deal with Spain to secure access to the Mississippi River. New York’s John Jay didn’t agree and set out to do the exact opposite. Thanks largely to Madison and Monroe, he was unsuccessful. It was remarkable how relevant this book is today. At it’s core, it is the story of life long allies who ultimately became political rivals without becoming personal enemies. Buy this book for any history lover on yopopur holiday shopping list!
