In this episode, Janet Michael hosts Dave Van Deventer from Shepherd's Ford Productions to discuss the upcoming 20th Annual Watermelon Pickers Fest 2024, which is set to take place from September 5 - 7, 2024 at the Clarke County Fairgrounds in Berryville. The conversation highlights the festival's return after a hiatus and dives into the event's rich history, logistics, and lineup. Dave shares the festival's origin story, starting at Watermelon Park and its evolution over two decades, including challenges like almost canceling due to rain in 2018. He emphasizes the sense of community and the fun of taking a break and coming back refreshed and inspired. The festival offers a diverse array of bluegrass acts and other activities. This year's headliner is Peter Rowan, along with other notable performers like Wyatt Ellis, Della Mae, and John McEuen. The event also features workshops, kids' activities, vendor stalls, and, of course, plenty of opportunities for impromptu jam sessions. Dave talks about the detailed schedule for both days, starting in the evening on September 5, with early arrival music camps with the official kickoff on September 6 with yoga, workshops, and dance sessions, and continuing with performances and other activities. Campers are encouraged to arrive on the 5th to grab prime camping spots - there is no additional fee to camp.  For families, the festival offers a great environment with various kids' activities like recycled instrument making, a parachute and pinata event, and even a festival parade. Besides music, there will be craft vendors and a variety of food stalls. Janet and Dave also discuss the practical aspects such as ticket prices, camping options, and additional amenities like showers. They assure listeners that the festival is designed to be family-friendly and inclusive, with special half-price tickets for teens and free admission for kids under 12. Dave encourages listeners to attend, whether they're camping for the whole weekend or just visiting for the day. Send us a Text Message. There are some who still think of multi-instrumentalist John McEuen as the lively multi-instrumentalist who helped found the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the mid ‘60s and then remained at the band's helm for some 50 years. Nevertheless, after parting ways with the group in 2017 due to various personal and professional disagreements, he's managed to carve out a vigorous and varied solo career — one which includes an autobiography, a role as host of the Acoustic Traveller radio program on Sirius/XM, a notable contribution to pal Steve Martin's number one, Grammy-winning album The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, and his own series of solo albums. His allegiance to tradition and the music bred in America's heartland has always been foremost in his efforts, a fact that's never been more obvious than on his latest LP, The Newsman, a series of striking spoken word narratives with instrumental accompaniment. McEuen shares his thoughts on the project -- and his career in general -- with Lee and Billy courtesy of My Backstage Pass. Send us a Text Message. From an early age, Harry Tuft was involved in piano and clarinet lessons. Through a summer camp counselor, he learned about the ukulele and became interested in playing that instrument. From there, he moved to a baritone ukulele, and then a six-string guitar. His father loved classical music and opera and would often play traditional classical during dinner. After dinner, Tuft would listen to the pop and R&B stations of the day and sing along with the likes of Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Perry Como. From John McEuen: "With the airing of Ken Burns Country Music, [John] McEuen has brought acoustic music to many new fans, taking part in 4 episodes of the series. Episode 6 is called Will The Circle Be Unbroken and John closes that one. A co-founding member of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (1966, with a dream ‘to be on the radio').  October 2017, after [the] 50th anniversary tour, John left the band to pursue his own tour dates and projects, and stepped off the bus." From a very young age, inspired by a piano inherited from his grandparents, Howard Dlugasch took piano lessons of his own volition. By his early teens, he started playing a multitude of instruments, such as guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. He jokes that he is mediocre at all of them, but only because he is a musician who wants to focus on a multitude of instruments at once rather than completely on one specific instrument.  Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. John McEuen was born in 1945 and spent his high school years in California's Orange County. He and lifelong high-school friend Steve Martin both got a job in 1963 in the magic shop at Disneyland when they were just 16. When John saw Missouri bluegrass group The Dillards in an Orange County club a couple of years later, his life changed forever. He knew he wanted to be “a traveling music man”. As a multi-instrumentalist (banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle) John has been recognised as a founding member and award-winning outstanding performer of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. He left the group at the end of the 50th year anniversary tour in 2017 due to demands for his solo work and the desire to do new things. In addition to John's numerous solo accolades, NGDB was inducted in to Colorado Music Hall of Fame 2015. It's all covered in his book 'The Life I've Picked' from 2018. In 1971 John initiated the now landmark Will the Circle be Unbroken* album, hooking Nitty Gritty Dirt Band up with his musical mentors Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson. The now multi-platinum “Circle” is in both the Library of Congress and the Grammy Hall of Fame. GEORGIA RADIO - Grammy winner John McEuen will released his new album, TheNewsman, on March 22nd viaCompass Records. And he joined us to talk about it, plus his incredible music career to date.In an unprecedented move for McEuen, the album is 11 spoken word tracks, all mini movies with his unique style ofmusic behind each one. From the opening title track, which is a true storyabout a man who sold newspapers and was a tremendous influence on the youngmusician in Los Angeles, to the final cut, “Julie's Theme,” inspired by JulesVerne telling a friend, in a French cemetery, about his recently deceased youngwife, McEuen presents an album filled with stories that will inspire andperhaps bring a tear to your eye.The different tracks on the album rage from “Killed at theFord,” a Civil War-era poem that tells of the death of a young soldier as heand friends go to meet a picket-guard by a ford. Although no trouble is expected, a shot isfired from the woods and the young man is dead. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellowdoesn't end the poem there, but relates how it affects the young man's familyat home.“The Cremation of Sam McGee,” one of the most famous poemswritten by Robert Service, was published in 1907. It is told from theperspective of the man who cremates the prospector who froze to death in theYukon while searching for gold. The Stephen Vincent Benét poem “The Mountain Whippoorwill”was published in 1925. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released it on their album“Stars & Striped Forever” in 1974.“Fly Trouble” is a Hank Williams Sr. classic from 1949, and oneof “talking blues” numbers that McEuen has recited many times over the pastyears.“Old Rivers” was written by Cliff Crofford andreleased by Walter Brennan in 1963, while Thomas Monroe wrote “Nui Ba Den”while he was in Vietnam in 1968. More recent writings are “Pineapple John” byJohn Carter Cash, Hans Olson's “I'll Be Glad When I Run Out Of Gas” andThaddeus Bryant's “Red Clay.”“I have been around the world playing music and collectingstories for… a long time,” McEuen acknowledges. “As a teenager, well beforeNitty Gritty Dirt Band, I loved Meredith Wilson's The Music Man.Before I started playing I must have recited “Ya Got Trouble”2,000times! Later, when performing became part of the life I picked, every now andthen I would do one of these ‘stories' (often a Hank Williams talking blues) onstage, always happy about how well they went over.“I did The Mountain Whippoorwill for many years with theearly Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Then, another story would come along, be learned, and ‘filed away' for a future date. ‘The stories' soon tired of waiting to ‘getdone'.“So, I did them.”McEuen credits work he has done on film scores as a majorinfluence on this album. He especially credits Tommy Lee Jones, who along with SissySpacek starred in “Good Ole Boys,” for which he did the soundtrack.“At this point of my career, film score work (14 cool scores)gave me the experience of putting background music with words and picture, without getting ‘in the way' with music,” McEuen says. “I learned from TommyLee Jones, while I was doing a score for him, that when someone says ‘Hey,that's a great score going on there,' the music person has failed to supportthe picture. You can't let the music dominate, it has to support what'shappening.' So it sometimes is with spoken word. This album is a soundtrack forfilms not yet made.”McEuen says that watching the Tom Hanks film News of theWorld made him finish this album. “I feel like that character, having toread the news to people who have not yet heard it. And, my first ‘song', thetitle cut, was about that type of fellow in a way, and hisstory had tobe told.“I find in this final year of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this albumcomes in a good space. That was a great 50-year run for me, and now that it hasrun its course, it's time for The Newsman!“I look forward to going out and telling people about those 50years that impacted so many, especially me, playing some new music, andthrowing a few of these stories in along the way.”McEuen believes these spoken word offerings can fit on radio.“It is my suggestion that programmers add one of these cuts in between othermusic they are playing, finding styles that fit each – as they are eachdifferent. Listening to The Newsman from top to bottom is a lot to askof anyone! I look forward to seeing what people program with various cuts.”QUICK LINK: https://store.compassrecords.com/products/the-newsman-a-man-of-recordAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

For his 99th birth anniversary, WNCW honored the late great Earl Scruggs by sharing portions of interviews with artists who knew him, broadcasting stories ranging from brief encounters in young adulthood, like Sierra Hull's memories of Earl, on to years of friendship and collaboration with guests like John McEuen and Pete Wernick (note: Sierra Hull will also be our featured guest in her upcoming episode). These conversations were rich and deep, and helped me understand Earl Scruggs as the man in ways that were at turns surprising, but always inspiring. I asked everyone here essentially the same two questions: tell us your favorite memories or stories about Earl, and talk about his impact as an artist and how that legacy continues since he has been gone. It all adds up to three and a half hours of audio (!), and it should be no surprise that there is a ton of gold to be mined in all those conversations; here is a synopsis, a sampling of everyone's thoughts, insights and memories. This episode hones in on the stories that reveal Earl Scruggs as a humble genius, a quiet and kind man who was in so many ways the same farm boy and mill worker from the foothills of western North Carolina even after living in a mansion in the heart of Nashville. Plus, there is plenty of talk about the genius and enduring legacy of Earl Scruggs, whose namesake lives on in the form of not only his vast catalog of recordings, his songwriting and revolutionary playing style, but also in the Earl Scruggs Center in his home county, housed in the county courthouse built in 1907 in downtown Shelby NC, as well as the Earl Scruggs Music Festival, which began in 2022 and continues on Labor Day weekend in 2023 in nearby Tryon NC. Earl Scruggs In this episode we welcome Kristin Scott Benson, Travis Book, Alison Brown, Sam Bush, Jeff Hanna, Vince Herman, John McEuen, Jim Mills, Earl's nephew J.T. Scruggs, Pete Wernick, and even my dad, who gives us a glimpse of what a Scruggs family gathering was like in the 1950s. The Gwinnett County Public Library in Suwanee and the Suwanee Arts Center are working together to bring knowledge about the visual arts and art programming to Suwanee and surrounding communities with a new program called Art Ties. Officials said the goal for the collaboration is to provide art education for all ages while encouraging creativity and engagement in the visual arts. The new program begins this month with the first edition on January 17. After that, it will be held quarterly. The first programs feature two Suwanee Arts Center Photographers: Traci Dickson, who will present “The Photographer's Eye — The Wonder of Looking Closely,” for children ages 10-13; and Gary Bowlick, who will present “The Wonder of Photography: Light, Subject and Composition,” for adults interested in gaining knowledge about photography. Both one-hour programs will take place simultaneously at the Suwanee Library, located at 361 Main St., at 4 p.m. Suwanee Arts Center board member Rhonda Starling and Radha Ashok, who is branch manager of the Suwanee Public Library, are the co-creators of Art Ties. Although the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band enjoyed a great deal of success with a host of radio-friendly songs, there's little question that the group's signature creation was the 1972 album “Will the Circle be Unbroken,” which paired the band with country and bluegrass legends like Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Merle Travis, Mother Maybelle Carter and Roy Acuff. The three-record release was a bestseller, yielded two subsequent albums and has been lauded as a vital link between Nashville royalty and the rock music community, lifting the veil on what was to one day be regarded as the Americana music movement. String wizard John McEuen, a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was among the key architects in the construction of “Circle” and is back on the road this winter, celebrating the group's opus with a concert full of songs and stories from the celebrated release, which is back on the charts thanks to Ken Burns' 2019 docu-series “Country Music,” an episode of which prominently featured McEuen, the Dirt Band and “Circle.” The celebrated guitarist, banjo picker and mandolinist, who in December celebrated his 77th birthday, and the Circle Band will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 14 at Eddie's Attic in Decatur. Although the album has been around for more than 50 years, McEuen said its songs have long been part of his repertoire. Sports Turf Company announced it has finished the renovation of the recreation field at Rock Springs Park. The renovation included replacing the natural grass field with an artificial turf. The park is used by the Collins Hill Athletic Association, the Gwinnett Football League and the Gwinnett Lacrosse League. the renovation will enable the field to be used by multiple sports — including football, girls and boys lacrosse and soccer — in a variety of weather conditions. As part of the field turf replacement, Sports Turf company also did concrete work, replaced fences, installed new goal posts, and made landscaping, irrigation and stormwater detention improvements. The Braselton Woman's club is partnering with the town's community development department to display original artwork from students in the historic 1904 building. “Creativity stARTs Here — A Kids View of Braselton” is a collaboration between the club, town and local schools to showcase students' artistic talents. The first display began this month and exhibits will rotate in seasons and among schools. Fourth- and fifth-grade Panther Leader students representing West Jackson Elementary School helped create the first display of art that models and exemplifies the history of Braselton and community life. The 1904 building originally housed the Braselton Brothers mercantile store at the corner of Georgia Route 53 and Davis Street. The Gwinnett Stripers are once again launching a virtual search for national anthem performers. All interested singers, vocal groups (five singers or less), and musicians can send a digital submission (video or audio) of their acapella or unaccompanied performance of the ational anthem to info@gostripers.com by January 31. Candidates will be judged on tone, pace (90 seconds or less), and clarity. Beginning in February, top candidates will be invited to participate in virtual auditions. No in-person auditions will be held. Those who have been chosen from the virtual auditions will be contacted to schedule a date to sing the national anthem during the 2023 season. Gwinnett Stripers' Opening Night at Coolray Field is set for March 31 vs. Jacksonville. Coming down the homestretch of Season Three of The Load Out Music Podcast, we settle into our new digs in one of the great music venues in St. Louis – The Old Rock House. Most important, we welcome yet another Grammy Award winner in Jeff Hanna, founder and longest serving member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In the 1960s, the Detroit-native landed in Long Beach, California, where music was being transformed. The sounds of folk, rock, country, bluegrass and blues were being blended in from San Francisco to Los Angeles into what is today considered roots, Americana or alt-country. But it was the bands at that time, in that place that were doing it – The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers (both led by past guest Chris Hillman), Poco, Emmylou Harris, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Buffalo Springfield, Linda Rondstadt Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell and, of course, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Hanna started hanging out at McCabe's guitar shop with a cast of characters that would shape the alt-country movement: Les Thompson, Jimmie Faddon, Ralph Barr, the legendary Jackson Browne and other founding or future members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) such as former Load Out guest John McEuen. NGBD's first big hit was a cover of Jerry Jeff Walker's “Mr. Bojangles.” But when the legendary Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson agreed to record with NGDB, it set in motion a recording effort in Nashville akin to The Band's Last Waltz documentary film and album. It was released in 1972 as Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which is in the Grammy Hall of Fame as well as The Library of Congress. Rolling Stone called the first record (there were ultimately three), “The most important record to come out of Nashville” and a 2004 ZAGAT survey called it “the most important record in country music.” True to form, Hanna just downplayed it and instead applauded those around him. “I think most of just felt like, how lucky are we get to make records,” he told me. “It was such a communal project.” All along, Hanna – in and out of NGBD – has succeeded. From the NGBD's start in 1966 to its 1985 country number one song "Modern Day Romance,” followed up by the smash hit "Fishin' in the Dark" in 1987. The song Hanna co-wrote with Marcus Hummon and Bobby Boyd in 1994, "Bless the Broken Road," won a Best Country Grammy Award for Rascal Flatts in 2006. Most recently, Hanna and NGBD – now featuring Hanna's son Jaime on vocals and guitar – has taken on another American institution near and dear to their hearts in Bob Dylan's songbook. Dirt Does Dylan, a ten-track album highlighting some of the gems from Dylan's vast catalog, was just released with stellar cuts of songs like “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry,” “Forever Young” and other Dylan hits. Throughout our conversation, Hanna spends most of his time heaping praise on everyone in his circle but himself. From his longtime NGBD bandmates to his wife Matraca Berg and son, contributors to Circle like Levon Helm, producer Ray Kennedy and others – Hanna's intention is summed up in how he described the experience of recording Will the Circle Be Unbroken. “I'm so happy to be in that crowd.” Please enjoy the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast with founder Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
