I've recently been reading a few books about Bees and Bumblebees; in the past I worked on mosquitoes and beneficial pest controllers, got stung by a Japanese hornet (no, not the “giant murder hornet”, but it was big and it did hurt!) and slowly come to the conclusion that entomology should have been my hobby a lot earlier in life. There are so many stories! We know Honeybees and Bumblebees as “pollinators” of flowers, especially our food crops. In this insect group (Hymenoptera) the Honeybees and the four species of Bumbles are all exotic creatures imported as slave labour. Without them our diet would look a lot poorer. As gardeners we know too well that these pollinators are welcome visitors to our garden: my tomatoes would never fruit without those bumblebees; (the honeybees never get into my tunnel house – tomato is not their gig!). Every pollinator has its own range of flowers to work on – the reward, of course, is to extract some nectar to feed babies and queens. This teaches us to create a heap of “wildflowers” under the apples, pears, plums and peaches, near raspberries and strawberries. The diversity of these wildflowers attracts a wide range of pollinators. It is exactly what you'd need as a TEACHER if you want to do a unit on bumble bees, or a topic for “mini-beasts” in the curriculum; identify what visits which flower. But these wildflowers also attract other nectar hunters: mosquitoes! Males only – they are the pollinators! They also fertilise the females who then lay eggs on the edge of ponds and water features. Woah! Hang on for a moment!! I know what you're saying… The mosquito wrigglers grow up in the pond/water feature, where they consume the bacterial soup that makes those water habitats so “dirty looking”; Mozzie larvae clean your water! Water cleaning mosquito wrigglers. Photo / Supplied Last but not least: the variety of flowers you plant in your garden also attract a variety of pollinating flies, beetles and parasitic wasps. Those flies and beetles give birth to babies (larvae) that are often predators of aphids, mealybugs and scale insects, as well as caterpillars and other plant “pests”. The Parasitic wasps (pareasitoids) will lay eggs inside their host; these eggs hatch into wasp larvae that will devour your garden “pests” from the inside-out, controlling a heap of damaging insects that give your plants a hard time. Parasitoid on Fennel. Photo / Supplied. For every job an insect does certain plant species receive a benefit; everything is connected to everything else… This why my garden has many different species of flowering plants, spread willy-nilly under fruit trees and near vegetables. I also make sure there are bumble bee nest boxes near my tomatoes and small bamboo “bug motels” in which some tiny native, parasitic wasps create their home … The more bio-diversity, the fewer troubles in your quarter acre paradise! In 2020 Stephenie Rodriguez attended a work conference in Nigeria where she experienced an unremarkable mosquito bite that seemed typically inconsequential at the time. However, fate had other plans. Just two weeks later, she found herself collapsing on the floor of an airport. A mere 24 hours passed before the digital entrepreneur, globe-trotter and single mother slipped into a coma within the confines of a Boston hospital room, her chances of survival set at a mere 2%. What Stephenie has navigated, adapted to and overcome amidst these most recent years is nothing short of remarkable. After contracting cerebral malaria and defying the incredibly narrow odds of survival stacked against her, Stephenie has now lost both her feet above the ankle and yet it's fair to say this extraordinary human very much continues to walk through life with a spring in her step, so to speak. Resilient, courageous and a hell of a go-getter... You'll want a bit of the Rodriguez grit and determination to rub off on you along the way I'm sure of it! Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 87th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. For this installment, titled "Mozzie! The Treasure!" I took a road trip to visit my friend Kirk Nybakken in Minot and we tore into the series premiere of USA Network's original series "White Collar," my Fuzzy Feature for this set. In my Classic Collection, cataloging discs 1426 to 1450, I talk about "FlashForward," "Monk," "Criminal Minds," "Mad Men," "Mercy," "Grey's Anatomy," "Tales from the Darkside," "Nip/Tuck," "Community," "Glee," "The West Wing" and "Battlestar Galactica." Also, with this set I break into a new binder, Binder No. 8, so I take a moment to reminisce about what all turned up in Binder No. 7. In my Current Collection, I only archived one disc, but that included the third season finale of "Kung Fu," and the series premiere of Bob Odenkirk in "Lucky Hank." I also watched the Netflix productions of "Cunk on Earth" and "BoJack Horseman," and Ralph stood me to "The Super Mario Brothers Movie," which was quite a lot of fun. This conversation touches on the definition of spirituality, the importance of ritual, and whether or not all the tools used by the Church are inherently bad. 32:09Is it logical to be a humanist in a world full of terrible humans? Here's what it's all about. We are Danielle and Anthony Santilli, and we own a pet food store in Columbus, OH that is focused on educating pet owners on the benefits of feeding a fresh, species-appropriate diet. Or simply - “Food nature intended” Since 2019, we have been helping pet parents transition their pets from ultra processed diets to diets our canines and felines have been thriving off of for millennia and long before the development of canned and bagged pet food. We have 2 dogs, Mozzie and Foxy, both with their own journeys, that have inspired our exploration in what it means to "feed like you give a damn." (That's our hashtag btw!) On our Fangs & Fur podcast, we will interview brands that we believe in, align with, and personally sell in our store. We will talk to industry experts on current research, best practices, and the natural products and remedies. We can't wait to share real life success stories and have you be part of this movement that we wholeheartedly believe in. Our main objective of this podcast is to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to be able to make the best decisions when it comes to your pets health. We will be answering a question of the week in every episode, so send in a question. Either DM us at @fangsfurpets or send us an email at danielle@fangsfur.com.

Like many outdoor educators' travel has been a constant theme in the life of our guests today. I'm thrilled to have Heather Hamilton join us on the show. Heather has always had a hard time answering, “where are you from?” – as she has lots of places that feel like home but was born in Wichita, Kansas, and has travelled a fair amount for a Kansas kid. But after finishing University at CU-Boulder, she bounced around the west a fair bit, did some international travels to Costa Rica, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Mexico, etc., and eventually ended up living in New Zealand for a bunch of years. While living in New Zealand, she travelled extensively throughout Australia and Indonesia, as well. And now her base is in Hawaii. She worked in outdoor education roughly 2000-2013. After her time as the Operations Manager for the NOLS NZ Branch, she shifted to Hawaii and chased after more judging work with professional surfing events. Heather was doing that as well in NZ while still working for NOLS but decided to mix things up a bit and go after some surfing dreams. When she first started with NOLS, she was a river instructor - primarily white water kayaking and then migrated into canoeing, hiking, sea-kayaking, etc as most of us do. In this episode: Heather shares her experience following the devastating earthquake in New Zealand in 2011, while she was an Operation Manager of the NOLS branch outside of Christchurch. and had been residing near a 30-minute drive through town to Sumner Beach. She explains how shaking turned water-saturated layers of sand and silt beneath the surface into sludge that squirted upwards through cracks. Thick layers of silt covered properties and streets and water and sewage from broken pipes flooded streets. House foundations cracked and buckled, wrecking many homes. She tells us how once the mobile coverage was back on; students and instructors were bombarded with calls from parents and loved ones all around the world. She further states the tragic aftershocks that lasted for months playing a game of catch it before it hits the floor, as she assisted the neighborhood with laundry and filling water jugs, which resulted in taking an emotional toll on her health and pushed her to the breaking point. Hamilton talks about another dreadful incident in Mexico City, and how she was hot to trot beforehand knowing all the ins and outs – that surfaced all the memories and struggled of the past. Moving forward, Heather shares some memorable trips on the Drysdale River in Northwest Australia, and how it still is the most special place to her. She gave us a deeper insight into how they went to the Malcolm Douglas crocodile farm and learn about saltwater crocodile country, and get educated on 10 different snakes. She entertains us more with hilarious funny stories with her pals, Warren, Travis, and Lelia, and shares some great tips to stay dry in Mozzie domes. We throw a quick intriguing rapid-fire questions at her, which she answers as gracefully as only she can. Lastly, she tells us her favourite hot drink after a long hard day at camps, and one particular place she wishes to share this drink in the field with - after all, what's more, soothing than wrapping your frozen fingers around a piping hot mug of something refreshing.
