Edsel Burdge walks us through plainness, starting with the Quakers, addressing concerns of plainness at various points of conservative Mennonite history, and makes a case for why considerations of plainness should matter to Christians today. Burdge thinks of plainness as an approach to life that identifies a person with God's people while resisting pressures of wealth, consumerism, and sensuality.Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College: Ready to Harvest's Video about Mennonites: “Overview of the Plain People” by Ernest Eby: “An Introduction to Old Order: and Conservative Mennonite Groups” by Stephen Scott: Shippensburg Christian Fellowship History Series: “Building on the Gospel Foundation” by Edsel Burdge and Samuel Horst: Link to the First Episode with Edsel: This is the 261st episode of Anabaptist Perspectives, a podcast, blog, and YouTube channel that examines various aspects of conservative Anabaptist life and thought. In this episode, we talk to Lorena Gonzalez and Jes Olvera from the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights about their work supporting unaccompanied child migrants in the US, and what it means to put justice at the heart of their approach to philanthropy. Including:What is the current landscape of philanthropic funding for immigrant rights like in the US?The issue of immigration is highly politicised (especially in the US), so when working as a funder in this field do you try to depoliticise it, or accept the reality that it will inevitably be seen through a political lens and work accordingly? Is philanthropy too often paternalistic, and centered on decisions being made about communities rather than by them? Can “funder ego” or “saviour mindset” present barriers to genuine efforts to share power? Is this a particular problem when working with children, because there is a natural tendency to act in a paternalistic way towards them and want to “save” them? What happens when there is also a racial element to this power dynamic? How can funders overcome any concerns they might have about the perceived risks of shifting power into the hands of young immigrants? What is Community-Centric Fundraising, and why has the Young Center adopted these principles in its work? Why is core-cost and multi-year funding so important when supporting movements and grassroots orgs?Does a focus on justice and solidarity require taking a different approach to philanthropy? What does this mean in practice?Does viewing things through the lens of justice change the nature of the relationship between funders and recipients? (I.e., they are no longer “beneficiaries” in receipt of a “gift”, but rather able to make justice-based claims for things they are due by rights).Do we need to measure impact in social change or social justice philanthropy? If so, how can we do it in a way that helps rather than harms grantees?Related links:The Young Center's website and blogLorena and Jes's guest article for Why Philanthropy Matters, “Solidarity NOT Charity – What it means to be a funder in solidarity with immigrant communities”Sign up for the Young Center's upcoming free online event with author Isabel AllendeSign up for the Young Center's upcoming Waymakers Race, Walk, Roll fundraising event (September 15-October 1)Understanding White Supremacy CultureVolunteer as a child advocateThe Principles of Community-Centric FundraisingPhilanthropisms podcast episode with Martha AwojobiPhilanthropisms podcast episode with Sara Slaughter and Derek MitchellPhilanthropisms podcast episode with Derek BardowellPhilanthropisms podcast episode with Sadaf Shallwani

Today we're talking about a topic we've not addressed before, and we're very excited to dig into it.  Our guest is Laurence Prusak, and Larry has been studying knowledge and learning for the past 30 years.  He has been a consultant in these areas for Mercer and a co-founder for Ernst & Young Center for Business Value.  He's the founder and director of the IBM Institute for Knowledge Management and co-founder of the Babson College Working Knowledge Research Program.  He's been a senior consultant for NASA, as well as teaching in over 40 universities.  He has also recently taught at Columbia University's program on information and knowledge, and he has co-authored 11 books. BILL YATES:  Wendy, we got this recommendation from Stephen Townsend to reach out to Larry and talk with him.  One of the books that Larry recently worked on is called “The Smart Mission:  NASA's Lessons for Managing Knowledge, People, and Projects.”  So as we get into this topic, I think project managers will appreciate the depth of Larry's knowledge on knowledge management. WENDY GROUNDS:  Hi, Larry.  Welcome to Manage This.  Thank you so much for being our guest today. LARRY PRUSAK:  You're welcome. A Definition of Knowledge  WENDY GROUNDS:  So we're going to be talking knowledge management, which is a new topic for us on our podcast.  And we're very excited that we have you with us.  Before we begin, could you give us your definition of knowledge? LARRY PRUSAK:  It's what a knowledgeable person knows.  Think about, if you go to a dentist, a dentist knows how to fix your teeth.  If he wasn't knowledgeable, you wouldn't be going to him.  We're talking about working knowledge, the knowledge that allows people to do things.  There's other sorts of knowledge.  There's religious knowledge, aesthetic knowledge, all sorts of things.  But we're talking about the knowledge that allows you to do something, and do it well.  Information is not knowledge.  Knowledge isn't data.

And within those forty affiliations are 2,600 church districts, with different religious and social practices. “Yet amidst this diversity,” writes Donald Kraybill, “many common traits—beliefs and rituals—still make it possible to talk about ‘the Amish' as one social group.” Donald Kraybill is Distinguished College Professor at Elizabethtown College, where he is also Senior Fellow of the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. He has written numerous books about the Amish and their related brethren; the latest is What the Amish Teach Us: Plain Living in a Busy World, just published by the Johns Hopkins Univeristy Press.

What makes Amish Businesses so successful? Why have Amish communities left farming for other businesses? And how did Amish entrepreneurs get started in woodworking? For help answering these questions, we turned to Dr. Steven Nolt of the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. The Amish have a long history of entrepreneurial pursuits, but it wasn't until the 1980s that they started to leave farming behind and focus on alternative businesses. But now the failure rate of Amish businesses in their first 5 years is just 10% compared to 50% among small business startups nationally! Listen to the full episode to understand what makes Amish businesses so successful. Some of the books Nolt has written include “A History of the Amish,” which is in its third edition, and “The Amish: A Concise Introduction.” He notably co-authored “Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy” about the Amish schoolhouse shooting in the village of Nickel Mines in Lancaster County. A few other co-authorships include the books, “Amish Micro-Enterprises: Models for Rural Development,” “Amish Enterprise: From Plows to Profits,” and a paper titled “Amish Enterprise: The Collective Power of Ethnic Entrepreneurship” that appeared in the Global Business and Economics Review. Yikes.Pretty sure if you're fancasting us into this clip from Grease about the Pink Ladies, Sierra is Rizzo. We've talked a lot about Sierra's books on the podcast, but it was on the Small Town Romance interstitial that Sarah joked all of Sierra's books take place in Menage County, Kansas. The Romance for RAICES auction was the brainchild of Suzanne from Love in Panels and raised TWENTY THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS! You should definitely support her blog and patreon if you can. The crisis on the border is ongoing and getting worse. Please continue to support romance's teams at RAICES and The Young Center. We were going to rickroll you by talking about Peggy Sue Got Married and pirate romances, but we're nice that way and didn't. FWIW, Jen still thinks the plot of Peggy Sue Got Married is haunting.Sierra is also, of course, the founder, owner, and operator of The Simone Scale, which does not include teabagging even, but has been, because she loves us, updated to include pegging. The image is on our website in show notes. We did a lot of research for this episode!Everyone wants the right pegging playlist, and of course there's one on Spotify. What a world! Besides Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman, we offer up for your consideration Back It Up, Boys by Peaches and Behind the Wheel by Depeche Mode. Here are some Sierra Simone recommended toys and harnesses. She says of the toys, "The small is VERY gently sized and some men may feel more comfortable with a toy is that isn’t a hyper-realistic reproduction of a cock."Elia Winters is a Fated Mates favorite, and we want to thank her for her help thinking through the implicatons for gender essentialism and cisnormativity in this discussion. Buy her books! Her latest Three For All has pegging.Sierra mentioned "that law about gas expanding to fill a space" -- well, I phoned Jonathan, a friend who teaches chemistry, and he says that's called entropy or Boyles Law of Kinetic Molecular Theory. Learn more about it here from Professor Dave, a Jonathan-approved chemistry youtube instructor.Samhain and Ellora's Cave (which was especially messy) were two earlier and now shuttered publishers of erotic romance.Jen Porter wrote a great twitter thread about erotic romance and character development. That's What She Said.Sarah mentioned "the RITA entry window" and goddamn if that's not a bitter pill to swallow right now. She's sorry.A little about what it means to be allosexual.Check out Roan Parrish's short story A Good Old Fashioned Chanukah Pegging, starring Ginger and Christopher from Small Change.Everyone knows you need a flared base on your butt plugs, or at least anyone who follows Jenny Nordbak knows.Romance as sex ed is complicated, but Scarlteen is on the job, and Teen Vogue would never steer you wrong. The Pegging Song that Adriana sent us from Twitter is amazing, and we want to thank @shutupaida for being so gracious about letting us play it during the podcast. Also, be sure to watch Big Mouth on Netflix, because she's writing for it now!I guess Katee Robert isn't the only one staging elaborate scenes with her Barbie dolls. The Rogue Anthologies are pretty great and there are quite a few of them.Jen had to do a major "retcon" on this hero in the Tamsen Parker book in order to read it. It's fine, really.Special thanks to our special guest Sierra Simone! You can find her on Instagram or Facebook. Read her New Camelot series, the first is American Queen! She also joined us on our MacRieve episode, and we talked about Priest, a book that blooded Sarah. You can buy a Pegging the Patriarchy button and other Romancelandia buttons at stickers at Jen's shop run by her best friend Kelly, and Sarah's t-shirts and swag from Jordandene.Next week, we'll be talking about Born in Ice by Nora Roberts! We mean it!Much thanks to all the members of the Pegging Cabal for their amazing, generous donation, and for asking us to do this episode: E is reading, Jennifer, Stephanie Blackhart, Amanda, Kini, Melinda, Tempest Bonds, Michelle Boule, JS Lenore, Eve Pendle, and Isabel. In this episode, Kim and Katie tackle the mountain of immigration through the lens of Valeria Luiselli’s essay: Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions. This essay is as long as it sounds: around 100 pages (easily read in one or two sittings), but the topics Luiselli encounters and reveals to us readers stayed with us long after we finished the book. Immigration from Central and South America is not just immigration - it’s refuge from war, we discover, and we try to tackle our own country’s viewpoint and treatment of these war refugees. The essay may be easy to read, but it’s not easy to digest. Here are some organizations you can donate to if you feel inspired by this episode or this essay:RAICES, Neta Texas Civiil Rights Project, Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, Detained Migrant Solidarity Committee, The Florence Project, KIND, ASAP, Women’s Refugee CommissionOr find and support an organization in your community.NEXT BOOK: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones If you have any discussion points, questions, or commentary you want to add to our next episode, or if you want to suggest a book for us to read, email us at clubbingwithfriend@gmail.com, comment below, or contact us using our various social media accounts:Facebook: Book Clubbing with FriendsInstagram: clubbingwithfriendsTwitter: @bookclubwfRemember to subscribe on iTunes, rate, review, and if you’re super nice - like, follow, and share!!

The faces of children being separated from their families at the border have been plastered on the news. What you don’t see are the lawyers on the ground are doing everything they can to help these families. In this report from On The Road at ABA Annual Meeting 2018, host Lee Rawles talks to Kimi Jackson, Maria Woltjen, and Anne Chandler about the common legal issues that are facing immigrants at the border such as family separation. They discuss what makes this such a hot topic in the media, less commonly addressed problems like working with non-biological families, and what the ABA is doing to help. Kimi Jackson is the director of Probar, a south Texas pro bono asylum representation project. Maria Woltjen is the founder and executive director of the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights at the University of Chicago Law School. Anne Chandler is the executive director of Tahirih Justice Center’s Houston office.

The Amish have always struggled with the modern world. Known for their simple clothing, plain lifestyle, and horse-and-buggy mode of transportation, Amish communities continually face outside pressures to modify their cultural patterns, social organization, and religious world view. An intimate portrait of Amish life, The Amish not only explores the emerging diversity and evolving identities within this distinctive American ethnic community, but also its transformation and geographic expansion.

Donald B. Kraybill, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, and Steven M. Nolt spent twenty-five years researching Amish history, religion, and culture. Drawing on archival material, direct observations, and oral history, the authors provide an authoritative and sensitive understanding of Amish society. Donald Kraybill is Distinguished College Professor and Senior Fellow at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College. Karen Johnson-Weiner is a professor of linguistic anthropology at SUNY-Potsdam. Steven Nolt is a professor of history at Goshen College.
