This special episode was recorded live at the Miu Miu Literary Club, which took place on 9th-10th April 2025 in Milan. Under the direction of Mrs Miuccia Prada, and now in its second iteration, the Literary Club is the latest in a series of cultural experiences devised by Miu Miu to promote the arts. - Naoise Dolan is an Irish author whose first book, ‘Exciting Times', was published to widespread acclaim in 2020. Naoise followed this with the equally well-received ‘The Happy Couple' in 2023. In both books, Naoise tackles the confusion of contemporary life with precision and wit: her characters grapple with sexuality, housing instability, social media malaise, and our growing class disparities. At the same time, Naoise brings a fresh, often unpredictable perspective to the timeless topics of education, girlhood, and desire that inform this year's Literary Club curation. - Deep Reading Lists can be found at phoebe.substack.com - @phoebelovatt @phoebelovattpubliclibrary @naoisedolan @miumiu

We were all locked down and forced to work from home almost 5 years ago. Many people found it liberating not to have to commute to work every day and legislation was even passed to provide workers with the legal option of flexible or hybrid working. But a new study from the Compass Group says that working from home leads to exclusion and problems with Socialisation. Needless to say, opinion is divided. Joe discusses the report findings further with Yvonne Mulally from Compass Group.

Elsie the cat has a set of 120 buttons programmed with words. She uses them to lie, swear, apologise, express grief and frustration and love to her human, the author Mary Robinette Kowal, who talks about what's involved in learning to communicate via language buttons with companion animals. And animal behaviour expert Zazie Todd explains how animals might be interacting with human language. This is the first half of a two-parter: in the next episode, some talking dogs - and their humans - come to visit, and we hear about the kinds of things you find out about what your animal friend is really thinking, and how it changes the ways you communicate with other humans too. Suzanne Noble - The Life & Times of an American Woman in Britain Black Spy Podcast Season 15, Episode 0001 This week's Black Spy Podcast turns its attention to the interesting life and times of 63 year old American (now also British) female entrepreneur of many talents, Suzanne Nobel. In her terrific life story, Suzanne begins by detailing her family's journey from their home in New York to their arrival in the UK, where her father took up a lucrative executive banking post in the City of London. Interestingly, she notes that her first impressions of 1970's Britain were that it was somewhat old fashioned and backward. After all, this was the era when the United States appeared economically, culturally and above all, militarily unassailable. We later learn that Suzanne's go-getting temperament that didn't allow her to be side tracked was potentially fostered by her teenage schooling in various American military and civilian schools in the South East England. However, Carlton and Suzanne also consider that this winning attitude may well have been down to a more complex mix of the age old question of nurture versus nature. We will not spoil listeners enjoyment of the depth and scope of this Black Spy Podcast episode by telling you to much about the content. But suffice to say, this episode is another extremely entertaining Black Spy Podcast episode. Moreover, if you are a woman of a certain age, this episode may will be of particular interesting to you. However, women of all ages can learn from this podcast, as indeed can all humans globally; by noting the importance of having a lust for life. This was a fun, relevant and timely conversation about something we all want. But WTF is happiness? Is it the same thing for different people? Is it a smart goal? Or is it the byproduct of a smart goal? Or maybe, something else? What is the relationship between work and happiness? Socialisation happiness? Physical health and happiness? What's the difference between contentment and happiness? Joy and happiness? Do we need to feel sadness to appreciate happiness? Do our genetics impact our capacity for happiness? Can we measure it? All these questions and more are explored in this conversation with Dr Tim Sharp. *Tim is an internationally renowned leader in the field of Positive Psychology, a sought-after Speaker and Facilitator, Consultant and Coach, Writer and Podcaster, Spokesperson and Brand Ambassador. In this week's episode, regular mom on the show, Cass, shares Max's first experience at the playground. She chats to Meg about his fascination with watching other children and her concerns that he may need more interaction with little ones his own age. Meg discusses social development in little ones, and what sort of play to expect at each stage of development. This then leads Meg & Cass to talk about the effects of lockdown during the height of COVID-19. Not only the impact on 'lockdown babies' social and emotional development, but also on our awareness of sanitisation. Cass is careful about sterilising everything but is finding that it's becoming harder as Max spends time on the floor, exploring his toys with his mouth. Meg shares some insights into how to build Max's immunity and the necessity to expose our little ones to common germs. Cass also shares what activities she's been doing with Max to stimulate him. She talks about some of Max's favourite items and activities, including the all-time-favourite with little ones - an empty box. Meg talks about the 4 B's that every child needs at Max's age to stimulate their development in all spheres. Listen for all of this and more. Homeschooling socialisation is one of the most common comments or questions parents receive. Almost every argument involving homeschooling revolves around this: "Homeschooled children don't get enough socialisation.". Nobody ever worries about whether our children will get a good education at home, but we hear a lot about children needing school for socialisation. It is a well-known fact that homeschoolers have been subjected to the socialisation argument for quite some time, but what is the reality in relation to homeschooling socialisation? In Episode 93 of the Raising Mums podcast, I discuss homeschooling socialisation. Homeschooling and Socialisation References: The Prophet ﷺ was reported to have said, "I have been sent to perfect good character." [al-Muwaṭṭa' 1614, Sahih]The Prophet ﷺ was reported to have said, “A man follows the religion of his friend; so each one should consider whom he makes his friend” [Abu Dawud]"He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." [Proverbs, 13:20] Study by Shyers, Hedin, Montgomery et al. showed a significant advantage seen in homeschooled kids, with regards to their social development.Thomas Smedley (1992), in a controlled study, found that "...home educated in this sample were significantly better socialized and more mature than those in public school."
