Thoughts on The Game Starts at 1:00 It comes down to Michigan being the type of team to go for it on 4th and 1 and Ohio State is the type of team to punt on 4th and 1. This game came down to blocking and tackling, not sign stealing. Ohio State is below the Ferentz line over the last three years (and are 74% of the way to Ryan Day's 100 points). Twitter has been so much quieter since Saturday. Is this the end of the line for Ryan Day? Should it be? Also who would you even hire next? Michigan's culture was built to beat Ohio State. This program brings out the mental fortitude of the players required to endure what the last six weeks has been. 2. Offense vs Ohio State Starts at 36:19 Blake Corum's 22 yard run is what he came back to Michigan for, he ran duo and made Sonny Styles look silly. Trente Jones is blowing people off the line - so happy for him in this game. The Ohio State defense was as advertised, JTT is a monster of a run defender. Feels like they could've just used JJ instead of Alex Orji on the run plays out of the first half. Why didn't JJ run more? It didn't quite feel like the best game plan but it worked, also Ohio State's defense just played really well. Was the Roman Wilson touchdown throw the best throw we've ever seen a Michigan quarterback make? Playcalling on Michigan's last series wasn't great but otherwise it was great throughout the drive for draining seven minutes of clock. Cornelius Johnson didn't have the same explosive plays as last year but the catches he did have were arguably just as monumental. There's no question that Colston Loveland is going to catch the ball when the ball goes his way. 3. Hot Takes, Defense vs Ohio State Starts at 1:18:31 Takes hotter than Ryan Day's seat. Michigan's defense did exactly what we expected, Marvin Harrison Jr said he's never been doubled like that before. Michigan did a good job containing TreVeyon Henderson, Chip Trayanum was more effective. The secondary got interesting after Will Johnson got hurt. Why was Jimmy Rolder out there? Marvin Harrison Jr made some insane catches, especially the downfield one where he was held. Ryan Day didn't want to run CJ Stroud and he doesn't want to run Kyle McCord. Surprising lack of frippery between both offenses. McCord played surprisingly well under pressure. Quinten Johnson's big hit made the Big House as loud as we've ever heard. Michigan's rotation of players all season paid off in this one. 4. Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 2:08:44 Let's compare Ryan Day to James Franklin! Discussing all of Ohio State's punting situations. What about Michigan's, should they have gone for it on the final 4th and 4? Maybe it's better to let Colston Loveland win it for you than to have to defend Marvin Harrison Jr without Will Johnson. Ryan Day on 4th and 1 - WHAT ARE YOU DOING? A monster game from Tommy Doman. There were far fewer Ohio State fans in the stadium this year. Shout out to the giant Mike Sainristil head in the field rush. Roman Wilson's touchdown was absolutely a touchdown. Stadium replay - DON'T SHOW THE REPLAY IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SHOW THE BALL. WE WERE EMOTIONALLY DISTRAUGHT. Also it was an incompletion, not a fumble. 5. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 2:45:53 Iowa - 13 Nebraska - 10 The most Iowa win ever? They hit the game winning field goal with someone who has not kicked all year. The last ten minutes of this game was incredible. The Big Ten Championship Game should be about the same as two years ago. Northwestern - 45 Illinois - 43 In regulation! Northwestern amazingly finishes the regular season 7-5. Bert was angry at the end. Purdue - 35 Indiana - 31 Indiana head coach Tom Allen is fired after this game (and gets a $20 million buyout). Who does Indiana hire? Maryland - 42 Rutgers - 24 Maryland won this in the first quarter. Tagovailoa threw some dimes and that's all she wrote. Rutgers cannot play from behind. Taulia now leads the Big Ten in all time passing yards. Wisconsin - 28 Minnesota - 14 Hot seat time for PJ Fleck? Penn State - 42 Michigan State - 0 Total yards were 586 to 53. Throughout the year, the Land-Grant Podcast Network will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conferences, but also from individual interview sessions. On today's episode of "Land-Grant Uncut," we are bringing you unedited audio from the Tuesday, Oct. 17 press conferences at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center where Ohio State football coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles met with the collected media. The coaches put a bow on last Saturday's 41-7 victory over Purdue and previewed the upcoming top-10 matchup against the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions. Day provided vague updates on injuries to TreVeyon Henderson, Chip Trayanum, Emeka Egbuka, and Denzel Burke. He also discussed the progress Kyle McCord has exhibited in recent weeks and the red zone package for Devin Brown that we saw against Purdue. Knowles talked about the idea of a "bend but don't break" defense and Jermaine Matthews ability to step up if Burke is unable to go on Saturday. Ohio State rolled to a 41-7 win at Purdue despite playing without TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams, and Emeka Egbuka, and losing Chip Trayanum to injury midway through the game.Second-year running back Dallan Hayden was a standout in his first action this season, rushing 11 times for 76 yards and a touchdown. So does Hayden deserve a bigger role in the Buckeye offense moving forward? Kevin Noon of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss that and several other storylines, including Devin Brown's new role at the goal line, an impressive day from the OSU defense, and much more. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
On LGHL Instant Recap Pods, Land-Grant Holy Land writers break down Ohio State games just minutes after the action ends. They bring you the biggest stats, storylines, and moments of the game before the players make it back to the locker room. On today's episode, Matt Tamanini and Justin Golba are breaking down No.3 Ohio State's 40-7 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers. It certainly wasn't a perfect performance from the Buckeyes, but it felt like OSU did everything that it needed to do in order to get prepared for the challenge Penn State will present next weekend. Kyle McCord had arguably his most complete performance of the season and the defense continued to show a remarkable ability for keeping opposing offenses out of the end zone. Of course, there were a few negatives as both running back Chip Trayanum and cornerback Denzel Burke left the game due to injuries. As of recording time, Ohio State had not provided any updates as to the severity of their injuries, but Trayanum appeared to be in concussion protocol, while Burke seemed to be dealing with a leg injury. The Buckeye wide receivers -- including Marvin Harrison Jr. -- had an abnormal number of drops, but if that is the biggest issue for a team, then you are in pretty good shape. There was a lot to talk about following Ohio State's 17-14 last-second victory over Notre Dame on Saturday. The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend 17-14 Saturday night. Buckeyes running back Chip Trayanum scored the winning touchdown on a one yard plunge with :01 second remaining in the game to stun the home crowd. To make matters worse, Notre Dame only had 10 men on the field for the decisive play. When the game was on the line, Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord delivered. Considering Ohio State coach Ryan Day just named him the starter two weeks ago, he was cool under pressure. On the road. While trailing. With no timeouts. Incredible. Ryan Day was so fired up he ripped former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz in his post game interview! Meanwhile, the White Out turned out to be a Blow Out at Beaver Stadium as the Penn State Nittany Lions shut out the Iowa Hawkeyes 31-0. Hawkeyes fans will have more reason to yell at Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz. And the biggest surprise of the weekend had to be watching the Minnesota Golden Gophers blowing a 21 point lead to the Northwestern Wildcats. The win might have been good enough to land David Braun the head coaching job. Finally, we close it out with our Top 10 observations from the weekend. It's all on Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon. Ohio State's matchup with Notre Dame pitted two of the winningest programs in college football history, and ended up with one of the most dramatic finishes either program had ever seen. Chip Trayanum scored the winning touchdown for the Buckeyes with one second left on the clock, in a 17-14 win. In this VERY extended episode, Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss all of it, including Kyle McCord's impressive performance, Ryan Day's surprising end-of-game callout of Lou Holtz, and much, much more. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
Ohio State pulled out a 17-14 win at Notre Dame on a Chip Trayanum touchdown with one second left. Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis give their instant reaction to a Buckeye win in South Bend that will be remembered for a long time.
The Ohio State Buckeyes scored with one second left and beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 17-14 in an incredible Saturday Night Showdown of college football. This game will have huge playoff ramifications moving forward. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day should feel great about quarterback Kyle McCord as his starter. After a nervous start he settled down and made some big throws, but did not throw a touchdown pass. Buckeyes running back TreVeyon Henderson ran for 104 yards and a touchdown and Chip Trayanum stretched across the goal line with :01 remaining for the game winner. Elsewhere, the White Out was a Blow Out at Penn State as the Nittany Lions shut out the Iowa Hawkeyes 31-0. That should give restless Hawkeyes fans some ammo when discussing their frustrations with Hawkeyes offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz this week. Meanwhile, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar threw a career high 4 touchdown passes in the rain Saturday night. We take a look at the rest of the Big 10, including Michigan Wolverines football coach Jim Harbaugh and his return to the sidelines following his 3 game suspension. And we take our first look ahead at week 5 around the conference with Locked on Big 10 LIVE with Craig Shemon. On LGHL Instant Recap Pods, Land-Grant Holy Land writers break down Ohio State games just minutes after the action ends. They bring you the biggest stats, storylines, and moments of the game before the players make it back to the locker room. After a somewhat shaky start to the game on Saturday, the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes absolutely blew the doors off of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to the tune of a 63-10 victory. Kyle McCord looked every part of a Buckeye starting quarterback going for 318 yards on 19-of-23 passing. Marvin Harrison Jr. was -- unsurprisingly -- the biggest recipient of those passes, wracking up 126 yards and a touchdown, but Emeka Egbuka was also instrumental in the victory as he accounted for two Buckeye TDs. On the ground, TreVeyon Henderson also had a big day rushing for a pair of scores and Chip Trayanum also had one as well. The offense felt like it finally figured out the best way to operate with someone who wasn't C.J. Stroud at the helm. After an early fumble, McCord looked confident and in control of the offense and had an impressive day before giving way to Devin Brown in the fourth quarter. The defense also came to play, holding one of the most prolific passing offenses in college football to just 204 yards through the air and 284 overall. They also delivered WKU quarterback Austin Reed his first sack and interception of the year. In total, the Buckeye had four takeaways, including a pair that went for scores. Overall, it was about as good of a final tuneup game as you could get before heading to South Bend next weekend. In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tom Orr and Tony Gerdeman discuss some things they learned upon rewatching Saturday's game between Youngstown State and Ohio State. The fellas talk about concerns on the offensive line, the play of the free safety, a defense that lost leverage, Chip Trayanum's performance as a fullback, a more aggressive defense, and much more. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2630697/advertisement
There is much to discuss on the show today as Dan Rubin joins Dave Biddle. It sure appears as though Ohio State has its QB1 and he is Kyle McCord. Will Ryan Day say as much this week? Or let things play out one more week before making any grand proclamations? Also on the agenda: * McCord looked sharp against Youngstown State, but the offense overall was a bit choppy. How concerned are we about this? * Here is a stat we do not like seeing: the Buckeyes rank 114th in the country in third down conversions. They better get that cleaned up in a hurry. * Denzel Burke is stepping up at cornerback for OSU. * Mike Hall and Tyleik Williams look good at defensive tackle. * But OSU isn't getting much production from J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer off the edge. What gives there? * What do we make of the situation at running back with TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams and Chip Trayanum all seeing roughly the same workload against YSU? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Ohio State senior running back Chip Trayanum had a solid game on Saturday as both a tailback and fullback. He ran the ball, the blocked, and he caught the ball. His role in this Buckeye offense looks like it's only going to get bigger. In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tom Orr and Tony Gerdeman discuss his contributions so far and what else they could become. They also recap Wednesday night interviews, which included Trayanum. They also spoke with right tackle Josh Fryar, tight end Cade Stover, cornerbacks Jordan Hancock and Davison Igbinosun, linebacker Steele Chambers, kicker Jayden Fielding, and receiver Julian Fleming. All of them had plenty to say. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2630697/advertisement

The first Ohio State football game of the season is now in the books, and while a number of people have weighed in on the play of Kyle McCord and the Buckeye offense, BuckeyeHuddle's Xs and Os guru Ross Fulton has taken time to break down the film and has some thoughts on the quarterback position, some of OSU's struggles in short yardage, and much more. Ross joins host Tom Orr to share his analysis of what he saw and what he learned from the first game of the Buckeyes' 2023 season. How did Kyle McCord grade out in his first start of the year? Why did OSU struggle in short yardage at times? What made Chip Trayanum so effective in the run game? How can Ryan Day get Marvin Harrison, Jr. and Emeka Egbuka more involved in the offense? You can also watch this podcast on YouTube to see the plays that Ross is discussing. Ohio State's first game of the 2023 season gave us plenty to talk about. While the Buckeyes were never in danger of losing and came back from Indiana with a 1-0 record and a Big Ten road win, Ohio State and its fans were left generally unsatisfied with the team's performance on offense after the Buckeyes scored just two touchdowns in a 23-3 win. That's exacerbated concerns about whether Ohio State will have the quarterback play, offensive line and running game it needs to have a championship-caliber offense this year. On the bright side, Ohio State's defense got the year off to a dominant start as it held the Hoosiers to just three points and 153 yards. On this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, we discuss what went well for Ohio State's defense and what didn't go well for the Buckeyes' offense. We also consider whether the Buckeyes' Week 1 showing changes our expectations for the 2023 season and look at some of the other top storylines from across college football's opening weekend.A rundown of what we discussed in our Week 1 recap: 1:00: Ohio State left Bloomington with a 1-0 record and that's what matters most (just ask Clemson) 2:01: Indiana's offense may be an “anomaly,” but OSU's defensive dominance was still impressive 5:25: Some Week 1 offensive struggles were expected, but they weren't supposed to last all game 8:35: The offensive issues are fixable, but they must be fixed quickly with Notre Dame coming soon 9:10: Kyle McCord wasn't awful, but he (or Devin Brown) must be better for OSU to achieve its goals 13:52: Running the ball on third down remains a persistent problem for Buckeyes 18:02: Ohio State did a lot of experimenting offensively, which will probably continue in Weeks 2 and 3 22:12: Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka have to get the ball more than they did in Week 1 26:17: We got spoiled by C.J. Stroud's ball placement, and Kyle McCord isn't at that level right now 28:59: Cade Stover, Julian Fleming, Chip Trayanum were offensive bright spots 34:22: Josh Proctor looks like he belongs in the starting lineup (though bigger tests are coming) 40:22: Sonny Styles' first start lived up to the hype (though bigger tests are coming) 44:12: Jim Knowles “loves” the defensive tackle rotation, but Andy thinks Mike Hall needs to play more 45:56: Triple option was a factor in no linebacker rotation, but we'll believe more rotation when we see it 50:21: Our concerns and expectations for Ohio State haven't changed too much from a week ago 59:50: Looking for passing improvement, running consistency and a potential shutout in Week 2 1:02:43: We're not sure what to expect from Colorado this year, but it's sure a fun team to watch 1:06:54: Drew Allar looks like the real deal, which makes Penn State a real threat in the Big Ten East 1:08:03: Notre Dame looks more dangerous with Sam Hartman (though it hasn't faced much competition) 1:08:37: New clock rules mean more commercials, but fewer possessions comes with pros and cons 1:15:19: Texas/Alabama, Wisconsin/Washington State among Week 2 games to watch
It wasn't the win that Buckeye fans expected, but it was better than the loss Clemson fans received. In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tom Orr and Tony Gerdeman go over what they learned after rewatching Ohio State's 23-3 win over Indiana. Was the quarterback play as bad as people think? Was it worse? Did Kyle McCord use enough of the field? Did he have the time to do what he needed? What is the biggest concern on the offense right now? What will it take to get more Chip Trayanum on the field? How about that defense? Is Sonny Styles the most versatile defender in the country? Did people forget about Caden Curry? The fellas talk about all of these things and more this week. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2630697/advertisement
Ohio State is loaded with talent and experience at running back overall entering the 2023 season. The group includes junior TreVeyon Henderson, fourth-year junior Miyan Williams, sophomore Dallan Hayden, third-year sophomore Evan Pryor and fourth-year junior Chip Trayanum. Yet, it feels like we're not talking about Tony Alford's room enough. That will change on today's show as Dave Biddle flies solo. In addition to the RBs, Biddle will look back on all of the high points from the first week of practice, including Sonny Styles running with the first-team defense at slot safety, the competition at right tackle and much more. That is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. If you could pick only 22 Ohio State football players to go win a game for you against 22 other Ohio State football players, which Buckeyes would you choose? That's the question we were tasked with answering on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays as we held our annual Eleven Warriors preseason team draft, going head-to-head to pick the best possible lineups for a hypothetical intrasquad game. The ground rules were as follows: Each of us had 22 total picks to draft 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players. Offensively, we were required to draft one quarterback, five offensive linemen and five skill-position players (wide receivers, running backs or tight ends). Defensively, we were required to draft at least three defensive linemen, two linebackers and four defensive backs with the other two picks being flexible, though we both opted to draft four defensive linemen and five defensive backs.Griffin won the pre-draft coin toss which allowed him to choose between the No. 1 overall pick or the second and third picks, and he chose to pick first. Following the No. 1 pick, we alternated selections two at a time in a snake-draft format until we both filled up our 22-man rosters. Our picks:1. Marvin Harrison Jr., WR (Griffin)2. JT Tuimoloau, DE (Dan)3. Donovan Jackson, G (Dan)4. Josh Fryar, OT (Griffin)5. Josh Simmons, OT (Griffin)6. Emeka Egbuka, WR (Dan)7. Kyle McCord, QB (Dan)8. Tommy Eichenberg, LB (Griffin)9. On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I'm joined by Jordan Williams to discuss all the news surrounding Ohio State recruiting and other fun stories from around the country. To get the show started, we get into the future Chip Trayanum propaganda that will be on this podcast from here on out. Then we turn to Ohio State's 2025 quarterback commitment and the next steps after Tavien St. Clair announced his commitment to the Buckeyes. After that, we turn our attention to official visits in college football, and why they are now a meaningless indicator in recruiting. There should be less worry about elite recruits taking visits, they are allowed to take as many as schools are willing to offer. Plus on the player Ohio State fans are most concerned about, there is no reason to carry that concern as long as Brian Hartline is employed. We return from the break with a game called Ohio State versus the field. In this game we are predicting if certain Ohio State recruiting prospects are going to be Buckeyes or choose to go to school somewhere else. After the game we read off the worst coach rankings of all time, and we get into why seeing the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean is a terrible idea to begin with. Ohio State returns one of the deepest and most talented running back rooms in the country this fall, but can the Buckeye ball carriers stay healthy in 2023?Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to break down what they're expecting from TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams, Chip Trayanum, Dallan Hayden, and Evan Pryor this fall. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I'm joined by Jordan Williams to to discuss our main takeaways from Ohio State's Spring game and Spring practice in general as the Buckeyes head into summer. We start the show with a discussion about Jordan's matrimony this weekend and future advice on couples who are planning on taking that significant step. This also divulges into a conversation about the expenses of a wedding. With that out of the way, let's all give Jordan a hearty congratulations. After that, we get into the business side of the show with a major discussion about Ohio State's offensive line, Starting here creates an elevator build of excitement as the positions continue, but man are there some concerns with the offensive line. Continuing on the fronts, the exact opposite can be said about the defensive line, which also might be a problem. Continuing on after the break, we turn our attention to the the other position groups that had some stand outs including linebacker, Chip Trayanum, and the corner backs. As we move through every position on the team we finish with quarterbacks and why this battle is not settled. After that our show closes out with some quick discussions about Ohio State's success developing three star recruits and some recruiting banter on the bird app from some offensive line commits. Spring football is complete at Ohio State, which means it's time to wrap it all up and project ahead to how it will all translate to the games that count this fall.We begin this week's episode by discussing everything that stood out to us in Saturday's spring game, including a not-great but not-terrible performance by Kyle McCord, the offensive line remaining Ohio State's biggest problem, the defense continuing to show improvement and impressive performances from young Buckeyes like C.J. Hicks, Sonny Styles, Carnell Tate and Hero Kanu.Later, we project what Ohio State's starting lineup would look like right now and which non-starters we also expect to see significant playing time for the Buckeyes this fall. Finally, we discuss Ohio State men's basketball's newest transfer addition and why the Buckeyes could still be in the market for one more transfer. The rundown for our post-spring episode of Real Pod Wednesdays: 0:30: Kyle McCord didn't win the job on Saturday, but that doesn't mean you should write him off 8:09: The door remains open for Devin Brown, but we still see McCord as the favorite to start 11:15: The offensive line remains Ohio State's biggest area of concern by far 15:46: Ohio State must control the line of scrimmage to beat Michigan, and the OL could determine that 16:58: The defense outplayed the offense in the spring game more than the scoreboard even showed 18:53: Defense did give up three long touchdowns, but those came with almost all backups on field 21:05: Why Dan is confident cornerback play will be a strength for Ohio State this season 22:50: A slew of second-year defenders had standout spring game performances 30:30: Carnell Tate and Jayden Ballard continued to make their push for playing time at WR 33:00: Chip Trayanum continued to make his case for playing time at running back 35:39: A quiet concern for Ohio State: Will the Buckeyes have a reliable field goal kicker? 38:02: Projecting Ohio State's starting lineup and who else will play regularly at each position on offense 48:04: Projecting Ohio State's starting lineup and who else will play regularly at each position on defense 59:15: Why Dale Bonner is a logical addition for the basketball Buckeyes as a backup point guard 1:03:26: Why Ohio State remains in the market for one more transfer 1:05:00: Ohio State has an NCAA Tournament-caliber roster, but can it be a Sweet 16-caliber roster?
We open the show giving praise to Ohio State's recent recruiting success. We discuss Air Noland, Payton Pierce, and all the other big commitments! Has Ohio State gained an advantage with quarterback recruits from Georgia? Next we briefly tough upon Taylor Mikesell being drafted by the Indiana Fever. Dan believes Columbus could use a WNBA franchise. Finally we wrap up previewing the spring game! Dan thinks Chip Trayanum is poised for a big day meanwhile Cass thinks the quarterbacks will impress.
It is time for a deep dive on Ohio State's 2023 running backs and defensive linemen as Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show. If they can stay reasonably healthy -- which would be in stark contrast to last season -- how good can this collection of RBs be? The Buckeyes return all five scholarship running backs, including Chip Trayanum who is now strictly an RB. As for the defensive linemen, can they prove to be one of the top units in the country? There is little doubt they will be good, but will Larry Johnson's group be great? How deep will the rotation go this year and who will be the main contributors? Might LJ pare it down a bit? Also, we hope your brackets are faring well. Which means, we hope you did not have Arizona and Virginia going too far. All of that and more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Who gets the ball first? Will it be TreVeyon Henderson or Miyan Williams? Could Evan Pryor or Dallan Hayden emerge? What about Chip Trayanum and Xavier Johnson? Ohio State's running back room boasts a talent overflow ... right? Tony Alford and Ryan Day do have some decisions to make. What if the decision was up to Steve Helwagen? Luckily, our venerable scribe is here to answer that in detail. We also dip our toe in the Kyle McCord-Devin Brown waters. All of that before a spirited discussion on a Buckeyes basketball team that has won 1 of its last 14 games. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Five weeks after its loss to Michigan, Ohio State will finally return to the field to play for a national championship game berth when it faces Georgia in the Peach Bowl on Saturday.Having already been in Atlanta for a couple of days for the start of bowl week, Dan and Griffin share their final thoughts entering the game, break down what Ohio State must do well and who must step up on both sides of the ball and make their predictions for whether the Buckeyes actually will beat the Bulldogs on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays.A rundown of topics we discuss on our Peach Bowl preview edition of RPW: 0:42: Georgia beat writers don't think a Bulldog win is a sure bet 2:46: Beating Georgia will be tough, but we think the Buckeyes will at least be competitive 3:51: It feels like the Buckeyes are playing with house money (kinda), which could be a good thing for Ohio State 5:37: Vibes from the first two days of interviews (Note: This podcast was recorded before Wednesday's interview sessions) 8:51: Miyan Williams is expected to play, but Chip Trayanum's appearance at Tuesday interviews hints at him playing an increased role 12:54: Ohio State is embracing the underdog role, and it's one that's often suited the Buckeyes well 16:06: Georgia's defense is excellent, and because of far more than just Jalen Carter 19:04: Nothing's going to come easy for Ohio State's offense, but it shouldn't have to 20:43: This is another legacy-defining game for C.J. Stroud 24:04: Ryan Day can shut down the criticism of the last five weeks – or it will just grow louder 25:49: What constitutes a good day for Ohio State's offense? How many points the Buckeyes need to score 28:17: Luke Wypler, Cade Stover, Julian Fleming among Buckeyes who need to step up on offense 30:46: Ohio State's offense needs to do what it does best and attack downfield 32:51: Georgia's offense is similar to Michigan, so the Buckeyes need to have a better defensive game plan 38:20: Georgia's offense might give Ohio State more trouble than its defense 39:41: Jim Knowles must find correct balance between scheming for Georgia and playing to Ohio State's strengths 41:57: What the Buckeyes must hold Georgia to on the scoreboard to have a good chance to win 44:10: Ohio State's defensive line must make its mark on the game like it did in OSU's last CFP win 45:43: Linebackers and safeties will be crucial in pass coverage 48:08: Score predictions for Saturday's game (and why Dan picking Georgia might be good news) 53:02: Why we think a rematch of The Game is imminent if Ohio State wins
Ohio State's running back room has been missing a lot of its talented players over the past few weeks. TreVeyon Henderson hasn't played since the Penn State game, Miyan Williams left the Indiana game on a cart, Evan Pryor is out for the season, and even converted linebacker Chip Trayanum missed last week's game. So which running backs will be back on the field for the Buckeyes' final regular-season road game at Maryland?Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to answer that, discuss whether the weather forecast will impact the game, and much more.Check out BuckeyeHuddle.com to get all of the best Ohio State Buckeyes coverage. The Ohio State running back unit has suffered a shocking wave of injuries. Evan Pryor is out for the year, TreVeyon Henderson has missed a couple of games in a row, Miyan Williams had to be carted off the field during the Indiana game, converted linebacker Chip Trayanum missed the game against the Hoosiers, and even walk-on TC Caffey is out. So will true freshman Dallan Hayden have to start for the Buckeyes this weekend? And if so, how does Ryan Day feel about it?Kevin Noon of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to answer those questions and much more.- How baseball equipment helped the Buckeyes block a punt against Indiana- How did Josh Fryar grade out in his first career start?- What was Urban Meyer's reaction when Ryan Day put the biggest play of the 2018 Maryland game in the hands of a converted defensive end?- And much more.
After a sluggish and sloppy performance against Northwestern, the Ohio State Buckeyes returned home looking to get healthy against a struggling Indiana Hoosiers team. However, “healthy” just doesn't seem to be in the cards for the Buckeyes this year, as Chip Trayanum and Dawand Jones were held out and Miyan Williams got hurt during Saturday's contest. Nevertheless, the team did return to form, dismantling the Hoosiers in a 56-14 win. Williams, Dallan Hayden, C.J. Stroud, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Xavier Johnson starred offensively, while Steele Chambers, Lathan Ransom, and Tommy Eichenberg shone on the other side of the ball. Still, it was Kamryn Babb that stole our hearts and made our living rooms suddenly dusty with his first career reception/touchdown, capping the day's scoring. We talk at great length about the game, check in our score predictions, and look back at the individual performances to see if our picks clicked on offense and defense. Prompted by listener mail, we discuss the looming Michigan matchup a week in advance and then took our weekly walk through the rest of the Big Ten football results. Nobody wants to win the B1G West (still), as the Fighting Illini allowed the pack to catch up and now it looks like it'll be a mad scramble over the remaining two weekends. Also: is Graham Mertz bad or did Wisconsin make him bad? Finally, we previewed this weekend's game against Maryland. The Terrapins started the season brightly but seem to have hit a bit of a wall in recent weeks. Still, the Terps have been hard to beat at home and Ohio State has to keep its focus on the turtles in order to avoid the trap being laid before next week's showdown. We'll be back next week to talk about Ohio State's matchup with the Maryland Terrapins in College Park, and to preview the following week's return home when the Buckeyes will look for revenge against their rivals from that state up north. With just one week to go until the first game week, it's time to look ahead at the season as a whole and make some predictions about how Ohio State's 2022 season will play out.To start things off on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, Dan and Griffin each rank Ohio State's 12 regular-season games from the game we're most confident the Buckeyes will win to the game we believe is most likely to be an upset. While we agree on which five games we're most confident Ohio State will win, our lists diverge from there, as Dan is more confident than Griffin about wins over Michigan and Notre Dame while he sees Michigan State and Iowa as bigger threats than Griffin does.Beginning at the 29:42 mark, we make some additional predictions for Ohio State's 2022 season, including: What Ohio State's record for the season will be Whether C.J. Stroud will win the Heisman Trophy and if Jaxon Smith-Njigba will join him in New York Which Buckeyes will earn first-team All-American and first-team All-Big Ten honors Why we believe Marvin Harrison Jr. will be Ohio State's second-most productive receiver and Emeka Egbuka will be Ohio State's third-most productive receiver Why Tommy Eichenberg and Ronnie Hickman are our defensive MVP selections Who we think will lead the Buckeyes in tackles, sacks and interceptions Why we believe Ohio State will have the No. 1 offense in the country but won't have a top-five defense In the final segment of the show (49:16), we talk about our takeaways from Ryan Day and Jim Knowles' Monday press conference and what Gene Smith had to say after the Big Ten announced its new TV deal last week. We're not expecting to see Chip Trayanum play at running back unless necessitated by further injuries, but we do believe a divisionless Big Ten and College Football Playoff expansion could both happen within the next couple of years.

Two weeks into preseason camp, it's becoming more clear which Ohio State players could be trending toward breakout years and where the Buckeyes still have concerns as the season draws closer.Running back depth emerged as a concern this week when Evan Pryor suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice, and that's where we begin this week's show. Is there reason to worry about Ohio State having only three scholarship running backs, and do the Buckeyes need to move someone else to running back for additional depth? While Ohio State might still have the nation's best one-two punch at running back in TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, Pryor's injury increases the importance of Dallan Hayden's readiness, and we believe Kaleb Brown and Xavier Johnson – not Steele Chambers and Chip Trayanum – could be candidates to take snaps at running back if needed.About 14 minutes into the show, we shift the conversation to everything else we learned from watching a full practice last week and talking to Kevin Wilson, Larry Johnson and their tight ends and defensive linemen this week. Among the topics we covered: 15:10: Cornerback depth concerns and walk-on Lloyd McFarquhar taking advantage of his opportunity 18:18: Tommy Eichenberg standing out in practice and whether that will translate to three-down success 21:20: Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka both making their case as they battle for starting spot 26:00: Cade Stover's noticeable improvement as a pass-catcher 32:47: Defense making life more difficult for Ohio State's offense on the practice field 35:14: Whether Kevin Wilson's comments about the short-yardage run game are reason to worry 38:53: The depth of Ohio State's defensive line and why J.T. Tuimoloau could be the unidentified “alpha dog” 46:55: Why Mike Hall is a player to watch even though he's third on the nose tackle depth chart Finally (beginning at 48:04), we talk about the six players Ohio State chose to be captains – Kamryn Babb, C.J. Stroud, Cade Stover, Tommy Eichenberg, Tyler Friday and Kourt Williams – and which players each of us were surprised to not see on the captain list.
On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I am joined by Jordan Williams, and we we bit off more than we could chew on this and got into a little bit of everything in this one. To get the show started we get into Jim Knowles' media availability and one of us is drinking all the Kool Aid provided. We then get into his raised expectations for the defense and how the pecking order is being defined for his linebacker unit. Then we discuss the super-freshmen in C.J. Hicks and Sonny Styles, and their initial impressions in the program. After that we discuss some of the more intriguing topics from Ryan Day's media availability. I have trouble with names, but we get into the way Ryan Day talked about some of the players on the roster breaking down the coach speak. We discuss the word choice of Day for three players Enokk Vimahi, Xavier Johnson, and Chip Trayanum. We also discuss some of Ryan Day's concerns and why we aren't buying into any tenacity talk. After the break, we get into the new Big Ten media deal that is all but finalized. This conversation goes on and we discuss the nature of the deal. In this discussion we talk about the SEC and ESPN's mistakes/ Then we try to figure out how each network can build their coverage to maximize their relationship with the Big Ten. To close out the show, we answer all your questions to the best of our ability. This was fun and you guys had some great questions for the Buckeyes heading into week one. Ohio State has an excellent roster overall entering the 2022 season. However, there are some possible question marks, such as depth on the offensive line, and the overall talent at linebacker. The Buckeyes' season could rest on how the O-line and LBs play. The good news for OSU is there is reason for optimism regarding both units, and that's one of the many things Dave Biddle discusses on today's show. Specifically, how does the second-team offensive line look and could any of those guys be good starters if one of the current starters goes down with an injury? At linebacker, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said on Tuesday that fourth-year juniors Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg have "solidified things at linebacker" for the Buckeyes. He also had nice things to say about Cody Simon, Teradja Mitchell, Chip Trayanum and C.J. Hicks. One thing that is not being talked about enough is OSU's lack of depth at cornerback. They only have six scholarship corners on the roster (not counting kicker/corner Jake Seibert) and Knowles revealed on Tuesday that the Buckeyes are a bit banged up at the position. One of the players who was working on the side was sophomore Jordan Hancock, who has a lot of buzz as a possible breakout player for OSU this year. True freshman Jyaire Brown is having a very good camp thus far and lost his black stripe on Tuesday. He will definitely play this season, the only question is how much. It could be more than anyone expected. To add some depth at cornerback, safeties Jantzen Dunn and Cameron Martinez repped at corner on Tuesday. So, that helps mitigate the situation. The Buckeyes have plenty of depth at safety, just like they do at linebacker and on the defensive line. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Incoming transfer running back Xazavian Valladay from the Wyoming Cowboys football program is officially having an eye kept on him for the Doak Walker award handed out to the nation's top running back. Valladay, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher for the Wyoming Cowboys football program, comes to an Arizona State Sun Devils football team facing a rebuild at the position. Gone are Rachaad White (NFL) and Chip Trayanum (transferred to Ohio State) and stepping up will be Valladay, Daniyel Ngata, Deonce Elliott, and freshman Tevin White. Valladay, who has by far the most proven track record amongst the group, will look to secure the top spot for the Sun Devils' backfield, but will this be enough to get him into the Doak Walker award conversation come the end of the season? Host Richie Bradshaw gives his thoughts on Valladay's inclusion on this watchlist and lays out what he needs to do to win the award on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.
