GET OFF YOUR ASK
"The Woes of Shopping for Fashion Online with Companies Out of China"

GET OFF YOUR ASK

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2023 12:25

written by @Tam Lawrence In recent years, online fashion boutiques from China have gained significant popularity, offering seemingly affordable clothing options. However, beneath the allure of low prices lie several concerns that warrant our attention. It's worth noting that these companies often target black communities with their inexpensive fabrics, unlined garments, and disposable apparel. The question arises: are we inadvertently supporting businesses that don't reciprocate the support? One striking aspect is the lack of substantial business interaction between China and African Americans. Despite outsourcing billions of dollars to support Chinese families, their country, and business ventures, it's important to recognize that China does not actively engage in business with African Americans. This raises questions about the equitable nature of this economic exchange. To shed light on the scale of this issue, let's consider real data that reflects the growth of these online Chinese boutiques. Shein, an ultra-fast-fashion retailer, is reportedly seeking a valuation of up to $90 billion in its U.S. initial public offering (IPO). Although the exact timing of the IPO remains uncertain due to market volatility, it's clear that Shein is aiming for substantial growth. Despite facing allegations of using forced labor, Shein expects to achieve a net income of $2.5 billion this year, a significant leap from $137 million in 2019.Furthermore, Shein has been expanding its presence by acquiring brands like British online retailer Missguided and exploring potential bids for established names like Topshop. The company's ambitious growth plans highlight its intention to become a major player in the global fashion industry. What's intriguing is the disparity between support from foreign entities and African Americans' spending habits. While it's less common to witness foreign individuals actively supporting African American endeavors, African Americans consistently contribute more of their hard-earned money, benefiting those who are less inclined to do business with them. It's essential to recognize this imbalance and consider its long-term implications.Shopping for cheap clothing from platforms like Shein or XplusWear.com can ultimately cost consumers more than they bargain for. These companies often offer no refunds or exchanges, leaving customers with subpar garments that fail to meet their expectations. To complicate matters further, some of these online stores strategically present themselves as U.S.-based businesses, making it challenging for consumers to discern their origins.Read Entire Article Visit Exposure Magazine https://iloveexposure.com/the-woes-of-shopping-for-fashion-online-with-companies-out-of-china/Contact TL@RLASSC.COM Media Partner: https://www.iloveexposure.com Media Partner: https://www.exposure-magazine.com Media Partner: https://www.exposureplustv.tvOffice: https://www.aartkingsleyllc.com #health #wakeyouraskupSupport the showContact TL@RLASSC.COM Media Partner: https://www.iloveexposure.com Media Partner: https://www.exposure-magazine.com Media Partner: https://www.exposureplustv.tvOffice: https://www.aartkingsleyllc.com #health #wakeyouraskup

Sexism and Garment WorkersWe hope you enjoyed last week’s chat with Natasha at Akojo Market. We discussed the valuable role that can be played in lifting up African Artisans and makers in order for them to grow their businesses. This weeks episode is in a similar vein but we’re a bit closer to home. In 2019 the UK fashion industry was estimated to be worth £118 billion. However it takes a major Fashion CEO just 4 days to earn what a female garment worker in Bangladesh will earn in her entire lifetime. So it’s clear that a huge gap in wealth exists in the industry but why is this. Women, specifically women of colour make up 80% of the garment maker workforce. So it’s safe to say that sexism and racism play key roles in reducing the value of the work done. Even though the work is highly skilled and technical, I couldn’t sew a hem to save my life and yet so many of us look down our noses at people who make our clothes.A Blueprint For Future Fashion BusinessesThis week we're speaking to Sophie Slater, the co Founder of Birdsong. The brand is widely recognised as being a pioneer in the social impact and sustainability spaces. 90% of women's organisations in London have had funding cuts since 2010. Birdsong work specifically with these charities, supporting the incredible makers and skilled artisans that exist in the UK. The brand aims to create a blueprint for a more localised, sustainable and fair fashion industry. It’s the very definition of slow fashion. The charities and organisations that Birdsong work with have said that through their partnership they feel less vulnerable to funding cuts. And we’ve spoken many times about the dangers of the ‘Made in UK’ tag on your clothes somehow negating the need for any work place responsibility on the part of brands. As we found out recently, factories in England are just as guilty of labour rights violations as those in the global South. Lockdown left many garment workers, especially migrant workers open to exploitation. Sophie is incredibly knowledgeable about supply chains in general, but knows her own like the back of her hand. Birdsong is more a community than it is a business. She is truly inspiring and Birdsong is proof that the old misogynistic and colonialist way of doing business is outdated and is not fit for purpose. We hope you enjoy this episode. Major UK Fashion Retailers Fail to Reduce Environmental Impact

The UK government has criticized major local fashion retailers for failing to reduce their environmental impact. The United Kingdom's Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), which monitors the environmental impact of government policies and initiatives, analyzed the operational processes of some fashion companies. After its investigation, the committee concluded that these companies' processes have a negative impact on the environment. The EAC identified fashion retailers JD Sports, Sports Direct, TK Maxx, Amazon UK, Boohoo, and Missguided as the companies with the lowest level of engagement in reducing their negative environmental impact. This is because these companies failed to sign up to the Sustainable Clothing Action Plan (SCAP), an initiative that aims to decrease environmental impact through the reduction of carbon, water, and waste. In addition to these companies, many other fashion retailers in the United Kingdom are being questioned by the EAC. The committee continues its investigation over concerns that the fashion industry's obsession with fast fashion harms the environment. According to the EAC, fast fashion, or low-cost trendy clothing, generates a lot of waste as retailers and consumers produce and discard clothing items rapidly to keep up with fashion trends. Unlike the least engaged companies, some fashion retailers have taken steps to reduce their environmental impact. Companies like Asos, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Primark, and Burberry all use recycled materials or organic cotton in making their products. Moreover, when customers buy new items, some of these companies also offer to take back the customers' old products of the same type.

Last week the UK Government released its interim report into the sustainability of the fashion industry. One of the issues that they addressed was concerns over fast fashion and how it might be leading to poor working conditions in UK garment factories where workers were being paid below the minimum wage and why this was happening. In particular the finger was being pointed at Leicester, where there are over 700 textile companies predominantly manufacturing for the UK fashion retailers. Fifteen of the biggest UK fashion retailers were called in to give evidence, including ASOS, M&S, Primark, Boohoo and MissGuided. Many of these retailers manufacture in the garment factories in Leicester in order to deliver ‘fast fashion’ i.e. product that can be made to reach the customer in the shortest possible space of time. In this episode I give my thoughts on the interim report, and suggest ways that some of the issues could be addressed. UK hit reality TV show, Love Island, is all about meeting the customer where she lives, says Missguided's chief digital officer, Jonathan Wall, on the latest episode of the Innovators podcast by TheCurrent. "Love Island for our sector, it's kind of like the annual peak, or the annual Christmas, of [other retailers]. It's our nirvana. You could not find anything else that's absolutely spot on to our bullseye customer," he comments. The fast fashion multi-channel retailer saw its sales spike 40% during the show this summer, which all came down to reigniting and re-energizing lapsed customers of more than six months, he notes. Product placement, which is essentially what this was, isn't new in strategy – but it's effective when it's done right, he explains. In this instance, his team designed looks and dressed all of the stars in the show. Wall's strategy is focused primarily on relevancy to the shopper, much of which comes from the fact his team internally are those individuals themselves. "One of the big big advantages we've got as a business, is that our customers are actually our team... Our average age in our business is 25, and guess what, our average customer age is also 25. You cannot overemphasize the advantages you get when every single day you are walking amongst your customers. It's a tremendous advantage." It's that laser-sharp focus on who they're targeting that also let's Missguided play with partnerships, he adds. The brand launched a collaboration with Playboy this summer that was met with a heavy dose of debate, but ultimately succeeded because of how relevant it was to the shopper it was intended. "It again hit the nail on the head for our customer," Wall explains. In conversation with Rosanna Falconer at a FashMash event in Missguided's hometown of Manchester in the north of England, Wall also shares his views on what's coming next in influencer marketing, which of the big social channels he's focused on, and just why he likes to court a little controversy along the way.
