Though it encompasses just a single square block, Union Square has loomed large in San Francisco. Today, it's in flux.Over the past few years, the luxury retail destination and its surrounding blocks have lost a number of notable tenants, but none as big as Macy's flagship San Francisco store, which announced its pending departure earlier this year. So, what will become of Macy's 400,000-square-foot home? What does it say about the pitfalls — and potential — of this iconic corner of the city? And what do current retail trends have to do with all of this?Join Chronicle real estate reporter Laura Waxmann at Manny's at 6 p.m. April 18, as she hosts a conversation about the past, present and, most importantly, future of Union Square. She'll be joined by real estate agent and power broker Kazuko Morgan, who has worked in Union Square for two decades; developer Chris Foley, who has spent 30 years focused on real estate and owns the Market inside the X (formerly Twitter) headquarters; and Anne Taupier, director of development for the city's Office of Economic & Workforce Development.Among the topics they'll discuss: What's happening today in Union Square? Why are the businesses that have distinguished it leaving? How are shopping hubs faring in other major cities? And could this moment be an opportunity to reimagine Union Square altogether?

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News talks to Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), about advancing Australia's circular packaging economy. We review APCO's recent Town Hall meetings with its members, as a consultative process following the National Packaging Targets Review, and Government's announcements earlier this year that it plans to change the current voluntary environment and intervene with legislation. The discussion explores the balance of regulation, administration, and autonomy to achieve targets. It examines insights provided by the participants, and the topics discussed in the forums, with a focus on the structure of the proposed framework model, its funding, governance, targets, and scope of its compliance and enforcement. This detailed review of these sessions and their outcomes also provides insights into the waste and recycling management process, encouraging mandated recycled content, and the steps that need to be taken to achieve these goals.Links:APCO Invites Input on Packaging Reset:www.packagingnews.com.au/latest/apco-invites-input-on-packaging-resetPackaging waste legislation: environment ministers step in:www.packagingnews.com.au/latest/packaging-waste-legislation-environment-ministers-step-inTargets data disappointing, APCO calls for reset:www.packagingnews.com.au/latest/2025-targets-data-disappointing-apco-calls-for-resetAustralia's 2025 National Packaging Targets: www.apco.org.au/national-packaging-targets------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest's employer. In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), about the Review of the 2025 National Packaging Targets. In the face of the disappointing reality delivered by the headline data that the targets are not on track to be met by December 2025, Foley calls for a stronger co-regulatory model which strikes a balance between industry-led action and effective government regulation.Foley dissects some of the data in depth. The biggest challenge lies with the target of recycling or composting 70 per cent of plastic packaging. The discussion gives us a comprehensive evaluation of current packaging solutions for flexible and rigid plastic packaging and whether we can meet our capacity to recycle them.We discuss the APCO Review's key findings and suggestions, with a focus on what can be achieved by the 2025 deadline, and also looking beyond 2025. Foley talks on resetting the co-regulatory and collaborative frameworks between government and industry, and interventions to regulate packaging materials to promote circularity.LINKS:2025 Targets data "disappointing," APCO calls for reset: www.packagingnews.com.au/latest/2025-targets-data-disappointing-apco-calls-for-resetAPCO Report: documents.packagingcovenant.org.au/public-documents/Review%20of%20the%202025%20National%20Packaging%20Targets------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest's employer. It's the big day and I'm meeting with my web strategist to present my “works of art”, content-wise. We're about to relaunch my website and I've worked my butt off on the deliverables for him. I know he's going to have all kinds of praise for me and I can't wait to hear what he says. He begins our meeting by telling me that my content needs a complete overhaul. Wait. what?!? I've worked countless hours on this!! He explains that my content is all about me... when instead it needs to be about my audience. Woah. That re-frame has forever changed the point of view of the story my website shares. Today, I've invited my web strategist Chris Foley onto the show to share his wisdom. What does it really mean to have a presence online? What does a sales process look like, and what misconceptions do people have about introducing (or re-introducing) their brands? In this episode, we dive into the story of our online presence and discuss why so many people have such sucky websites, the purpose of your website and establishing an effective web presence, why you might be failing at accurately describing what you do on your site, and so much more. What you will learn in this episode: What immediate concerns you must address on your site right away What story your sales process on your website needs to tell How to avoid the two biggest blind spots when launching your site Who is Christopher? At 25 years old, Christopher Foley decided to pack everything and move to southern California. Seeking fame and fortune, he found a ton of life experience instead. Life took him from the entertainment industries and financial ups and downs to marriage, making France his home for a while, and traveling (enjoying strange foods and foreign language exploration in the meantime) before he grew homesick and returned to Santa Barbara. Christopher considers himself a compulsive creative at heart. Born in the Boston area, his storytelling craft started early, developed over five decades, and has shined through several disciplines. He's done musical theater, film photography, and even a bit of tap dancing before earning his degree in video production and radio telecommunications. He's even had stints as a touring guitar player and music producer. When the digital revolution came calling, Christopher answered and spent the next 15 years building over 300 websites and helping people tell their stories online. In his view, he serves several roles for his clients: psychologist, ruthless cheerleader, trusted confidant, and oppressive editor among them. So despite the title of web strategist, his work transcends beyond established labels. The relationship between PO, team and stakeholders is critical. We talk about some of the anti-patterns, as well as what would a great community-building PO look like. The Great Product Owner: Growing the Product Development community as a PO Product Owners that can take advantage of the team’s ingenuity and creativity are more likely to succeed in their role! This PO would listen to the team’s ideas on what to demo, and act as the bridge between the team and the business stakeholders, effectively creating a “wider” product development team that included not only the team, but the PO and the stakeholders as well! The Bad Product Owner: The “over-engineer all the things” PO When Product Owners try to “control” the team by dictating how they should be working on the stories, and ignoring their ideas they prevent the team from bringing in their creative input and augmenting the PO’s ideas. In this segment, we also talk about the “not enough detail” and the “over-engineer all the things” PO, who does not understand the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) mindset. We start by assessing that “a really good, functioning team” is what success looks like for a Scrum Master. But we continue by developing that idea, and discussing some of the characteristics of great teams. In this segment, we also address the critical subject of “language” in teams, and how the lack of that common language can negatively impact a team. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Future-espective, traveling to the future In this segment, we talk about the forward-looking retrospective (the future-espective), which allows the team to imagine, and define what success would look like, including the behaviors and the conditions need to setup “now” to be successful in the future. This organization’s planning process was about commitments, not shared understanding. This led to teams planning their work, and invariably coming to the conclusion that they could not deliver “because others…”. The organization would then spend time reassessing the output of the planning process, but never addressing the root cause of the problem. In this episode, we learn about how Chris and others in that organization started to develop a completely different approach: Continuous Planning for a multi-team organization. In this episode, we talk about the “heroes” anti-pattern, which describes the case of a team that is focused on the performance of its members, rather than the whole team. It starts with the siloed knowledge and skills, which cases over-dependence on a single team member for certain work, and hampers the team when that specific team member is out. Liste in to learn how to help your team get out of that self-defeating pattern. Featured Book of the Week: Mindset, The New Psychology Of Success by Carol S. Dweck In Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Chris found the concept of the “Growth Mindset” a model that helped him work with teams to develop their ways of working. When organizations start their journey towards agility, it is normal, and predictable that not all participants in the journey will have the same level of understanding. In this story, Chris shares the common misunderstanding around the estimation conversation, and how it may generate conflict between teams and stakeholders. What’s a Scrum Master to do in those situations? First, we need to start by recognizing what step of the journey we are in, and what is still ahead of us! But there’s a lot more that Chris shares about the start of the Agile adoption journey. So is there sexual activity in heaven? We hear from lots of contributors on this one. In the beginning all things were good. Food, work, companionship, all of creation, perfect connection with God, perfect beauty and I presume, perfect sex. Things got screwed up along the way, ruining everything; and most Christians believe Jesus will redeem “all things," enjoying them forever in a new, perfect world. Everything redeemed. Except sex. Hmmm. The only thing "off the table" is sex? That’s odd, right? It’s at least worth a discussion. Regulars Ellen Mauro and Pastor Chip Judd, a couple of priests (Fr. Wesley Walker and Fr. Collaborative pianist, teacher, and vocal coach Chris Foley is the author of CollaborativePiano.com, one of the most popular classical music blogs that turns 10 years old in November, 2015. What is "collaborative piano"? Ah, great question! It happens to be the type of piano playing that both Chris and I specialize in, but I'll let Chris answer that question himself! Chris and I have known each other virtually for many years, but we've never actually spoken directly until this interview. So it's a real delight for me to introduce Chris Foley, who is an accomplished collaborative pianist based in Toronto Canada. A hallmark of Chris Foley's career in classical music has been his ingenuity, constant state of evolution and drive to pass on the rich legacy of chamber music, art song, opera and contemporary music as a dedicated teacher to new generations. His wide-ranging career has spanned the academy, stage and even TV as pianist and singing coach on the sleeper hit on Bravo!Canada award winning reality show "Bathroom Divas". A seeker of the cutting edge, this month Chris celebrates the 10th anniversary of his blog, The Collaborative Piano, which is one THE most popular classical music blogs out there. Happy 10th birthday, Chris! What an incredible accomplishment and amazing resource for classical music and collaborative pianists worldwide! Musical Selections: Die Schöne Müllerin, D.795 – 1.
