A live discussion with Christina Bu, the Secretary General of the Norwegian EV Association, where we explore how Norway has successfully transitioned to electric mobility. We dive into some valuable lessons learned, debunk common myths, and take a detailed look at how to properly scale charging infrastructure.
There are over 10 million electric cars on the road globally after a decade of rapid growth, representing around 1% of the world's car stock. But there are questions about whether there is the infrastructure to match. In many countries there are not enough chargers being installed to cope with the number of electric cars being sold. There are also doubts about whether existing electricity grids have the ability to store enough capacity to cope with charging demand and whether the amount of energy required can be fulfilled by green electricity alone. This week we look at Norway, an early adopter to electric vehicles, or EVs, and have been through a quick adaption period in which they improved their electricity grid to support night time charging, as well as improving the network of fast chargers around the country to enable EVs to take their drivers long distances. We then look at Vancouver in Canada has been looking at ways in which they can improve their EV infrastructure, to encourage the public to make the switch away from internal combustion engines. But do they have enough public chargers to serve those without access to their own private driveway? And finally we take a look at how Sub-Sahara Africa is electrifying motorbikes and minibuses. Many rural communities remain off-grid because demand for electricity is so low that it is not financially viable for them to build the infrastructure. For these rural areas, electric vehicles will bring a solid demand for electricity, bringing the potential for companies to make a profit from introducing solar mini-grids to those communities that don't yet have electricity. TESLA UPDATE LETS DRIVERS STREAM SPOTIFY, NETFLIX, AND YOUTUBE "On Thursday, the latest over-the-air software update, known as Version 10, started rolling out to Tesla owners. The update packs in a lot of fun features, mostly for when the car is parked or charging." reports the tech site Mashable: "Games like Cuphead are coming to the Tesla Arcade and a new "Tesla Theater" application houses all the streaming video options. Caraoke is like it sounds: a karaoke interface with lyrics on the screen so you can belt out your favorite tunes. A Summon update will let you "summon" your car from a parking spot if it's in your line of sight. This is only available for drivers who have the Full Self-Driving version or Enhanced Autopilot package. Other updates will streamline Sentry mode, and the new mysteriously named "Joe mode" lets you lower the volume for parking chimes and other alerts if you have a sleeping baby in the car. The mobile Tesla app that lets you control the climate, unlock the car, and other options was also updated and now you'll be able to remote-control windows on the Model 3 and Model X from the app. " ZDNet reports: "Along with Netflix, Tesla drivers will be able to view content from YouTube, and Hulu or Hulu + Live TV from the dash console. Tesla's self-driving capabilities aren't yet advanced enough for drivers to switch off and watch movies, and thankfully the company notes that you can "watch your favorite shows, movies and content right from your car while parked". The company says customers have praised summon it for its convenience after shopping, but notes that "those using Smart Summon must remain responsible for the car and monitor it and its surroundings at all times". The feature is available to drivers when the car is within their line of sight. Owners of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus and Standard Range vehicles will now able to stream Spotify, TuneIn, and Slacker when connected to Wi-Fi." And The Verge reports: "video recordings captured when Teslas are in their self-protect Sentry Mode are now stored in a separate folder from other camera content. A new “Joe Mode” is meant to avoid waking up sleeping passengers by reducing the volume of certain car chimes and alerts. And the Tesla mobile app can do a few more things and control even more aspects of the car remotely (like the windows)." SlashGear on China: "Tesla customers in China will soon get iQiyi and Tencent Video access in the car with more services promised in the future." Tesla says: "“We’re expanding our music and audio platform to enable Spotify Premium account access in all supported markets – one of the most requested features from Tesla owners. This will be in addition to Slacker Radio and TuneIn, which are also available in Tesla vehicles.”" If you pause the video which Tesla put online today, there's Car Wash Mode. But what is that? And on turorials: "Additionally, all customers will have access to Tesla tutorial videos to learn more about their vehicle." In fact if you play that YouTube video frame by frame it says this: Voice Commands Driving Visualization Maps Improvements Sentry Mode Improvements Software Update Improvements Application Launcher Updates YouTube Car Wash Mode Caraoke Spotify Cuphead Feeling Lucky Tesla Theater TESLA JUMPS ON REPORT MUSK AIMS TO DELIVER RECORD 100,000 CARS THIS QUARTER "Shares of Tesla jumped more than 5% after Electrek, an electric vehicle news website, reported that CEO Elon Musk said the company “has a shot” at delivering 100,000 cars this quarter, which would be a new record." says CNBC.com: "Musk wrote in the email: “We have a shot at achieving our first 100,000 vehicle delivery quarter, which is an incredibly exciting milestone for our company!” The CEO also reportedly added, “The challenge is making sure that we have the right car variants in the right locations and rallying as much as our company resources as possible to help with the end of the quarter deliveries.” The automaker is expected to report its quarterly vehicle deliveries in the next few days." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/tesla-jumps-on-report-musk-aims-to-deliver-100000-cars-this-quarter.html NORWEGIAN GAS STATION BECOMES FIRST IN WORLD TO REPLACE ALL PUMPS WITH ELECTRIC CHARGERS "Gas station" may no longer be an accurate description for a Circle K refueling outlet in Oslo, Norway, after it became the first in the world to replace all gas pumps with electric car chargers earlier this week." writes Newsweek: "The Oslo Circle K is one of the company's 16,000 gas stations around the world, but this location is the only one from any company to completely convert to electric fueling. The conversion to electric fuel "fast chargers" came at the same time as the United Nations Climate Action Summit was taking place this week in New York. Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Car Association, said in a press release that it "was extra fun to highlight this" at the same time world leaders were discussing climate change." https://www.newsweek.com/norwegian-gas-station-becomes-first-world-replace-all-pumps-electric-chargers-1461714 FIRST GAS STATION IN AMERICA TO DITCH OIL FOR 100% ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "The first gas station in the U.S. that has been completely transitioned from a petroleum station to exclusively charging EVs opened Thursday in Takoma Park, Maryland." says CNBC.com: "RS Automotives, the local gas station, has been around since 1958. Depeswar Doley, owner of the station since 1997, said he was already unhappy with the way oil and gasoline companies structure contracts — such as limiting the use of multiple suppliers, including clauses that extend contracts when a certain volume of sales is not met and limiting maintenance support. These business factors already were pushing him to consider other options. A nudge from his daughter was the final step in convincing Doley to make the switch to EV charging. There are more than 20,700 registered EVs in Maryland, and the area also has an electric taxi service in need of more chargers for their business. The gas station conversion was jointly funded by the Electric Vehicle Institute and the Maryland Energy Administration, which provided a grant of $786,000." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/first-gas-station-to-ditch-oil-for-electric-vehicle-charging-now-open.html THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER N ETCR HAS HIT THE TRACK AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A STAR WARS SHIP "Hyundai Motorsport hit the Hungaroring with its all-electric Veloster N to get the machine primed and ready for next year’s ETCR racing series. And man does it sound freakin’ cool." says Jalopnik: The Veloster N has a much higher pitch to its powertrain than fellow EV series Formula E. The company is turning its Italian HQ into an electric car centre of excellence, it says, confirming that all future Masers will be made in Italy." writes Tim Pollard for Car Magazine: "Maserati revealed that every new model in the pipeline will be either hybrid or full battery electric, and vowed that the switch from oil to volts wouldn't dent its commitment to 'innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA.' It also committed to 'extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities,' perhaps made easier by the brand's relatively late arrival into the electric car space." Follow Tim at @TimPollardCars https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/maserati/ YOU CAN NOW BUY A PLUG-IN HYBRID BENTLEY BENTAYGA "Bentley's new Bentayga plug-in hybrid is now on sale in the UK with prices starting from a little over £133,000." reports Motor1.com: "The luxury 4x4 is described by its manufacturer as “the world’s first true electrified luxury car”, and offers an all-electric range of around 24 miles on the new and more stringent WLTP efficiency test. That’s provided by a 126 bhp electric motor, which is also used to eliminate turbo lag, while the power comes from a high-voltage battery that can be recharged in two-and-a-half hours." https://uk.motor1.com/news/373273/bentley-bentayga-phev-pricing-uk/ AUSTRALIA IS GETTING MORE ULTRA-RAPID CHARGING "Chargefox, which claims to be Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, is increasing the number of ultra-rapid EV chargers it has in the country." as per Business insider Autralia: "The company revealed the target locations for all 22 sites in the first phase of its ultra-rapid EV charging network. It is part of Chargefox’s broader goal to have more than 100 ultra-rapid charging sites in the country. Chargefox already has 5 ultra-rapid stations open in, with 17 more in the works. All 22 will connect Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with additional sites in Western Australia and Tasmania." That’s because this video contains footage of the £1.5m+ Rimac C_Two hypercar crashing. A lot. Five times, in fact. It’s all a part of the C_Two’s homologation process to ensure it’ll be safe and road-legal across the globe. Still, five times." says Top Gear: "No lie, it’s never easy watching a super-rare, very desirable 1,887bhp self-driving electric hypercar being squished against some very solid things. Rimac reckons on 0-62mph in a frankly terrifying 1.97s, 0-100mph in 4.3s, a quarter mile time of 9.1s and 0-186mph in 11.8s." https://www.topgear.com/car-news/crash/watch-258mph-rimac-ctwo-crash-five-times QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you want to hear on this podcast?
Hello! One of the biggest challenges of the climate emergency is that we have to take tens of millions of petrol and diesel cars off the road. How do we do it? We look to Norway where nearly 50% of new cars sold are fully electric - in the UK it’s around 1%. Christina Bu, Secretary General of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association, explains what we can learn from from their success. Then transport experts Chaitanya Kumar & Jillian Anable discuss how to overcome the obstacles to further electric vehicle ownership and why we also need to reduce car use overall.AND Comedian Sarah Keyworth brings us joy rooms, breaking up with friends, the ultimate period get out clause, and an age limit on micro scootersALSOTickets for the Clapham Live show on the 28th July - https://www.wegottickets.com/event/473396 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this forward thinking episode, Christina shares with us her incredible experience and knowledge of the EV industry. She explains how Norway became the leading country in the adoption of electric vehicles, and in doing so, how it has tackled the myths surrounding EVs. Christina also highlights the changes in the EV consumer market; reveals how this market has matured over recent years and which brands are likely to become the driving forces in EV manufacturing. Finally, Christina looks to the future and explains which new technologies and countries are likely to make a significant impact as the EV market continues to grow. *This episode was recorded live at the Global Smart Energy Summit 2018.
It’s Friday 1st June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. BLACK CAB MAKER LEVC REVEALS PLUG-IN HYBRID VAN London Electric Vehicle Company has unveiled its plug-in hybrid van, a sister to the range-extended TX black cab. "Its vehicle will not focus on “last-mile delivery” but instead will provide the link between out of town distribution centres and city destinations" say Autocar. “Our segment is vans that undertake 100 miles a day, a role currently filled by 1-tonne medium-size diesel vans,” said LEVC. "The light commercial vehicle will be built at LEVC’s £325m factory in Warwickshire, alongside the range-extended EV cab. The purpose-built facility was opened last year as the UK’s first dedicated site for electric vehicle production." Autocar add: "The van will use the same powertrain as the TX taxi, an advanced battery electric set-up with a 1.3-litre petrol generator. This range-extender technology gives the TX a range of more than 400 miles and it can run for more than 70 miles on electric power only. It can charge its depleted battery to almost full in 20 minutes via a rapid charger, in two hours with a fast charger and in about eight to ten hours on a trickle charger. Similar figures are expected for the van, although are likely to be slightly less given the vehicle's extra weight." HYUNDAI KONA EV GETS NORWEGIAN PRICE I saw a tweet yesterday from EV authority Christina Bu all about the Hyundai Kona in Norway - so with the help of Google Translate i got the gist of the article. And then a couple of hours later it would have been easier to read the Electrek article! "The Kona is supposed to get 482 kilometers (WLTP) of range which equates to just under 300 miles. The long-range Kona will have a similar amount of horsepower as the Chevy Bolt at just over 200hp or 150kW which should propel the heavier car to 60mph in around 7.6 seconds. Kona production has already started and the first customers should start receiving them in July. Hyundai is limiting deliveries to 2500 in Norway this year, a far cry from the 20,000 people on the waiting list." CANADA'S FIRST BIG DELIVERY OF TESLA'S MODEL 3 LIKE 'CHRISTMAS MORNING' FOR SOME OWNERS It has been described as Christmas morning for Model 3 reservation holders! "The first large-scale delivery of Tesla’s much-anticipated Model 3 sedan has arrived in Canada, ending months of waiting for anxious owners who based their purchase on nothing more than online specs and photos." reports CTV: "Teslarati reported that roughly 300 examples of the Model 3 were spotted in a Toronto parking lot on Wednesday. Some who were taking delivery in Toronto were told by Tesla that they were attempting 200 deliveries per day. However some reports online today pointed at there being a lack of Tesla staff to handle how much work is involved, as Tesla pursue an aggressive delivery schedule. VATTENFALL TO LAUNCH INCHARGE IN GREAT BRITAIN IN JUNE 2018 Vattenfall, the Swedish energy group, is to make an ambitious first move into the British electric vehicle charging market next month with the launch of InCharge, its “any-driver-can-use” infrastructure concept. Building on its electric vehicle (EV) lead in north western Europe, Vattenfall hopes to have its first, or partners’ first charging poles installed during the second half of 2018. Vattenfall is also targeting the domestic market allowing drivers to charge easily at home, at work and in public. Vattenfall will allow any EV to charge at any Vattenfall InCharge charging point on a pay-as-you-go basis. Vattenfall will also promote roaming agreements with other charge point operators or driver service providers, unusual in Great Britain but increasingly common in northern Europe. The head of Vattenfall e-mobility Tomas Björnsson said today that the combination of Vattenfall’s investment plans and smart solutions for home, office and destination charging will boost confidence in the young British EV market, increase competition, help tackle drivers’ range anxiety, support clean air zones in Britain’s cities and ultimately bring down cost to British drivers. He goes on to say that a more open network is a ‘must’ if GB’s EV potential is to be realised. EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE SET FOR MAJOR BOOST WITH NEW LONDON TASKFORCE "London mayor Sadiq Khan is bidding to avoid a potential electric vehicle charger deficit in the capital with the launch of a new taskforce." according to Sam Sheehan in Autocar: "Khan’s newly announced Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Taskforce includes 16 organisations, with representatives from business, energy and infrastructure, as well as the Government and London boroughs, to focus on improving the city’s charging infrastructure. The group’s arrival comes as the UK’s plug-in vehicle market has seen unprecedented rates of growth. Last month, plug-in car sales (including full EVs and plug-in hybrids) surged by 50%, pushing the UK electrified fleet beyond 200,000 vehicles." TESLA BATTERY MANUFACTURER PANASONIC TO DEVELOP COBALT-FREE EV BATTERIES If you were picking up the free financial paper in the UK, CityAM, you'd have seen: "Panasonic has said it plans to start development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries without using cobalt due to the production component's high price and scarcity." Kenji Tamura, chief of Panasonic's automotive battery business, said: “We have already cut down cobalt usage substantially. We are aiming to achieve zero usage in the near future, and development is underway.” At a meeting yesterday, the chief of automotive business Yoshio Ito said that Panasonic and Tesla had agreed to boost production of battery cells as Tesla aims to increase production of the Model 3 to 5,000 units per week by the end of June. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. I episode 11 av Elbilpodden har vi besøk av generalsekretær Christina Bu i Elbilforeningen. Hun gir oss svar på hvorfor Norge ligger fremst i elbilutviklingen, og hva som skjer internasjonalt. Hvilke land blir de største markedene for elbil fremover, og hvordan kan vi tilrettelegge videre?
Monday 26th March 2018. SOME #MONDAYMOTIVATION A tweet from Christina Bu last night highlighted the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) 2017 Global Electric Vehicle report. The report predicts electric car stocks will range from between nine million and 20 million by 2020 and between 40 million and 70 million by 2025. The World Economic Forum continues: “However, electric vehicles are not emissions-free. While these vehicles obviously run on electricity, that electricity typically comes from a mix of emissions-intensive fossil fuels, nuclear energy, and power from renewables. That is, unless you live in country like Norway, which generates virtually all of its electricity from hydropower. But Norway is the exception rather than the rule. At the other end of the scale, China, whose electric vehicle market accounts for 40% of all sales globally, drives the most emissions-intensive electric cars. That is according to data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), which shows the majority of China’s electricity comes from coal. According to BNEF’s data, electric vehicles in China produce 188.5 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per mile, the most of any country globally. In comparison, electric vehicles in the United Kingdom produce just over 76 grams of CO2, while in France just 2.7 grams are produced per mile.” And what about the average for a gas powered car? They typically produce about 250 grams of CO2 per mile, BNEF says. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/03/electric-cars-are-still-coal-powered PORSCHE NOT LOOKING OVER THEIR SHOULDER AT TESLA The Porsche Mission E has been much talked about recently, from the spinoff Gran Turismo concept we saw at Geneva, to the Audi e-tron GT and now Bentley both saying they will build very fast, luxurious sports cars on the Porsche platform. It’s fair to say they’ll want some Tesla Model S and maybe even X buyers to choose them instead. However now the CEO Oliver Blume claims Tesla are not in their minds. He said ‘Tesla is not a benchmark for us’ at their annual press conference. And whilst they might not want YOU to think of them at the same time, they do have their own Model S and Model X to do exactly that, and benchmark them against the Mission E, as they’ve been seen together in youtube videos. And whilst some people don’t think of Tesla as a sports car like Porsche, remember the standard, basic entry level Model S 75D will do 0-60 in 4.2 second. One area Porsche can legitimately say they are ahead of Tesla on is charging, as they insist their 800 volt 350kW chargers will soon be installed at all Porsche dealers in North America. https://electrek.co/2018/03/25/tesla-is-not-a-benchmark-porsche-mission-e-model-s/ iX3 GETS CLOSER BMWBlog say “We recently learned that BMW could reveal its all-electric iX3crossover at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show later this year. it seems to still be in early production phases at the moment, as a BMW iX3 test mule was just caught doing some winter testing in the Scandinavian snow.” They’ve put a link to the Autocar website which I’ll link to in the show notes. I know some people are cynical and might ask how you’d know they were testing the electric version. The stickers down the side of it saying “Electric Test Vehicle” are a bit of a giveaway! https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/bmw-ix3-introduce-brands-fifth-generation-ev-power-2020 FORMULA E TEST CAR HITS THE TRACK DS is the first team to turn a wheel on track of the new Formula E batman car. IT’s called the DS E-TENSE FE and was on the track at their factory in Versailles. Reminder of the stats: the battery stores twice the energy, the motor is twice as powerful, the car swaps mid race will be a thing of the past at the technology partner moves from Williams to McLaren. The official test at Monteblanco starts today in Southern Spain for all the teams. GENESIS EV Finally Hyundai said yesterday, in Seoul, that it will unveil a new EV concept for it’s Genesis luxury brand at the Nork York International Auto Show coming soon. They said: “The new concept will be of a GT or gran turismo design and comes ahead of plans by the carmaker to launch a production EV in 2021 that will be able to travel 500 kilometers on a single charge.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 15th March 2018. NORWAYS KONA LOVE AFFAIR Firstly I was chatting to Christina Bu, who is Secretary General of the Norwegian EV Association, last night on Twitter because she’d said there were 18,000 expressions of interest in the new Hynudai Kona. I replied that sounds like the figure I’d heard from South Korea the EV incentive is ending but not for those with their names down, and she replied no, what she was talking about was only those in Norway. Now these aren’t deposits but 18,000 people who have registered as wanting one. Christina put me onto an article which, although I had to use Google Translate, I got the general point of. It looks like that from July, through to the end of the year, Hyundai want to ship 2,500 Kona EVs to Norway. One of my presumptions was that due to domestic demand in South Korea but also due to a limited initial run, Europe and North America would be waiting until 2019. That’s great news. Has production increased? Are they prioritising Norway because it’s just a large EV market? Hopefully we’ll know more soon but there’s no doubt, if they can make enough, they’ll sell a lot of the long range Kona and sister car the Kia Niro. https://www.tv2.no/a/9728933/ VW EV PRODUCTION Following up the VW news about $25bn of battery contracts secured for Europe and China, with North America still in negotiations, some news about where they will be built into the new VW cars. According to Matthias Schmidt, and auto analyst, “I.D. Production gets underway Q3 2019 (one line in Zwickau) moving to a double production line during 2020 (daily production 1.5k)”. It sounds a lot but remember by 2020 Tesla want to be making 500,000 Model 3’s every year. VW’S CHINA DEBUT CAR Staying with VW news and according to EV Obsession pictures of Volkswagen’s first Chinese electric vehicle, built in its joint venture with JAC, have surfaced from patent The Volkswagen and JAC joint venture should be presenting its 3 models by the end of the quarter, according to Gasgoo and spy images of indicate the first car will be based on the existing iEV7S. It may well be badged with VW’s Seat brand, but this article says: building its electric vehicles from an existing line-up is smart as JAC electric cars are well designed and it will drastically cut entry to market time as the factories and suppliers are already working to make iEV7S and can probably easily migrate based on demand. They won’t be premium, there will be no bells and whistles, but they’ll be solid and VERY cheap by other EV standards. https://evobsession.com/volkswagen-first-chinese-electric-vehicle-platform-nearing-release/ BMW LET YOU RETURN YOUR DIESEL FOR FREE So, do you remember those new, clean, diesel engines which were made to suit Euro 6 emission standards. This isn’t such as issue in America but I wanted to highlight it because it’s an insight into why we ALL haven’t got EV’s sooner. Those new engines were introduced in 2014/15 and, typically, have a life cycle of 7 or so years. So you might wonder why so many car makers have big plans from 2020/21, that’s part of the explanation. And with a focus on ensuring those R&D costs are recouped you can expect to see another couple of bumpy years for electric cars versus combustion engines. As an example of that, BMW just said if you buy a diesel you can return it. Described as a last ditch attempt to shift fossil fuels cars, the 'diesel return promise' starts in Germany this week, and allows anyone who leases a new BMW with a diesel engine to return the car to the Munich-based carmaker if a driving restriction on diesels is introduced in a city within 62 miles of their home, according to Motor1.com. They continue: BMW has also announced it will offer an 'environmental bonus' to owners of older diesel powered vehicles which will be affected by new restrictions. Owners of Euro 4 vehicles or older can receive up to £1,770 towards the purchase of an purchase an i3, a plug-in hybrid or a new Euro 6 vehicle with CO2 emissions of 130g/km or less. It’s great news for those who want peace of mind but, looking at the bigger picture, if you have to offer a money back guarantee on anything you sell, whatever the product, you need to worry. I think they’re worried. They make incredible cars like the i3 and i8, soon the i4 and iX3. But yes that sounds like a company who need to shift more dirty, sorry, clean fossil fuels cars for just a little while longer. https://uk.motor1.com/news/235869/bmw-diesel-return-promise/ PHEV’S SAVE FLEET OWNERS MONEY Moving on and fleet sales are a big profit line for car makers. And now, according to FleetNews: Data from ALD Automotive’s plug-in hybrid and ProFleet telematics trials has shown fleets could save £2,000 if they switch from diesel to PHEV. They say: In the six-month investigation, ALD business drivers swapped petrol and diesel cars for plugin hybrids. Running these vehicles for 15,000 miles a year for either three or four years, ALD concluded that businesses could save up to £2,000 for every vehicle replaced by the PHEV version. Matt Dale, head of consultancy at ALD, said: “We went into this trial with a very open mind and decided from the start there would be no preconceptions, but that it would be a factual review of PHEVs to see how they work. The results in certain cases have surprised us.” https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/fleet-industry-news/2018/03/12/every-diesel-vehicle-replaced-with-phev-could-save-2-000 INCREASING BATTERY PRODUCTION Next up, according to Push EVs, LG Chem’s battery plant in Poland which currently produces 100,000 batteries a year is to triple it’s output. They said: While in China Volkswagen chose CATL, in Europe Volkswagen will probably choose LG Chem as its EV battery cell supplier for the MEB platform. However, in the near future it seems that the upcoming second generation Renault Zoe and the 2019 Nissan Leaf will use most of LG Chem’s EV battery production capacity in Europe. They continue: Samsung SDI’s battery cell production in Hungary will start this quarter, so you can expect the much awaited battery capacity upgrade (42,62 kWh) for the BMW i3 to be announced in early summer. Furthermore, SK innovation is building its new EV battery plant in Europe. Follow the link for more from the always excellent Push EV’s website. https://pushevs.com/2018/03/12/lg-chem-to-triple-ev-battery-production-in-poland/ TESLA SUPERCHARGING PRICE INCREASE Since 2017 new Tesla owners have had to pay from electricity from Superchargers. Now they’re increasing those prices. Tesla's largest market in the U.S. is California, and its rates increased from $0.20 per kWh to $0.26 per kWh. In New York, the rate increased from $0.19 per kWh to $0.24 per kWh. However, the biggest increase so far has to be Oregon, which previously had a relatively low charging fee of $0.12 per kWh. Now, it's more in line with the other states at $0.24 per kWh. A similar thing happened here in the UK a while ago. A company called EcoTricity spent a lot of money early on putting in chargers on the main road networks. Whilst they were doing that, it was on free vend. Electricity became a thing which was free. And then when they said they needed to now start charging, as they’re not a charity, when you were reading the EV forums and posts on Twitter it was like people had their life savings taken away. The rates are reasonable and somehow these chargers have to be paid for along with the electricity they’re buying. https://hothardware.com/news/tesla-hikes-ev-supercharger-rates-across-us-by-as-much-as-100-percent TESLA SEMI STOPS FOR A BREWSKI Next up, and staying with Tesla, that long range Semi Truck has been on the move, 2000 miles in fact. It showed up at the Anheuser- Busch brewery in St. Louis on. Tuesday. Teslarati point out: “Tesla’s high-powered Megachargers, are set to be installed at key locations frequently visited by fleet operators. This system would enable the Semi to travel from one facility to another without compromising its range. With this in mind, the Anheuser-Busch facility in St. Louis definitely seems to be a site where the beer giant could build a charging stations for the 40 Tesla Semis that the company ordered”. Tesla seem to be testing their prototypes in public which is very brave. Remember the new Roadster which stopped on the road in California, which Tesla said was very much NOT broken down, they took a bit of teasing on social media for that. So it’s good to see they’re getting the Semi clocking up real world miles to identify what needs improving. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-anheuser-busch-st-louis-sighting/ TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE MOTORS And third time’s a charm, a triple whammy of Tesla stories this week, and Reuters point out: Tesla’s shift to a magnetic motor using neodymium in its Model 3 Long Range car adds to pressure on already strained supplies. “Some electric car motors use the permanent magnet technology, probably the most famous is the Tesla Model 3 Long Range. All the other Tesla models — Model X and Model 3 standard — use induction motors,” said David Merriman, a senior analyst at metals consultancy Roskill. And whilst many materials which are called rare earth are actually extremely common, when they’re only found in certain parts of the world, they are open to geopolitical affects such as export bans or tariffs. https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-metals-autos-neodymium-analysis/teslas-electric-motor-shift-to-spur-demand-for-rare-earth-neodymium-idUKKCN1GO282?utm_source=applenews FORD URGED TO ELECTRIFY Moving onto Ford, I often wonder about them. The Chairman seems to talk up electric cars, and yet I follow their UK PR chief on twitter and, whilst he comes across as a really nice chap, I’ve often seen him talking down electric cars, which I always thought a little odd. So I never really know where Ford stand on electrification. Currently Ford makes diesel engines in the UK but, with new sales plummeting, used values in steep decline and buyers not wanting to risk buying a diesel only to find it’s working nothing in 3 years time, or even worse they have to pay an extra fee to get out of the their finance deal because the depreciation was faster than predicted by the lender, the future of that factory has been questioned by some. The union Unite yesterday presented a document outlining a strategy for the whole UK automotive industry, which it says supports 800,000 jobs. It asked the government to help the shift to electric vehicles by supporting research and development, training and investment. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-43363539 Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
