Forfatter André Nautøy har kartlagt obskure øvingsopptak, mugne bomberom, rustne gitarstrenger, fiendtlige forsamlingshus, tomme ølflasker og ungdommelig overmot i alle landets fylker. Brenningen av Finnmark og Nord-Troms sees med et annet lys når Per Kristian Olsen lanserte sin bok "Jevnet med jorden". Historien sier at nedbrenningen var en militærteknisk avgjørelse for å hindre fremrykkingen av Den Røde Arme fra øst - men i boken trer et nytt perspektiv frem, avgjørelsen var politisk.Høsten 1944, da de tyske styrkene på nordfronten måtte trekke seg tilbake, tok de i bruk den brente jords taktikk i Finnmark og Nord-Troms. En hel landsdel ble jevnet med jorden og befolkningen tvangsevakuert, med enorme menneskelige omkostninger. Tiltaket ble begrunnet militært: Det gjaldt å forhindre en russisk invasjon, het det i propagandaen.Begrunnelsen var en bløff. Det foreslå ingen militær trussel fra russernes side. I virkeligheten var det NS-regimet og Reichskommissar Terboven som fikk Hitler til å gi ordre om at Nord-Norge skulle legges i aske. Hensikten var å hindre de norske eksilmyndighetene i å bite seg fast i nord.Nye arkivfunn viser at det hele dreide seg om en krigsforbrytelse av dimensjoner. 3.mars 1944 ligger de to nordnorske SIS-agenter, Tore Snefjellå og Alfred Henningsen på havets bunn utenfor Rødøy,og ser livet gå i revy mens sinkeminene eksploderer rundt ubåten HMS Sea Nymph. Bare minutter før hadde det vært ubåtens tur til å angripe MS Levante. Den var forsøkte bombet, torpedert og sprengt av nordmenn, briter, russere og til og med egne styrker skaut på det 133m lange linjeskipet. Men legenden seiler nok en gang videre. Hva var det med dette skipet som gjorde at det overlevde så mange angrep, ulykker og stormer?Levante ble brukt som transportfartøy av tyske styrker gjennom sommeren 1940.Kildene nevner uenigheter mellom forskjellige våpengrener om disponeringen av skipet.I juli 1940 fraktet skipet hærsoldater og utstyr til Narvik, som nå var gjenerobret, og tok med seg marinestyrker fra de ødelagte tyske jagere sørover.Men legendeskipets tid var på langt nær forbi. Det fortsatte sin seilas mellom Trondheim, Bodø og Kirkenes og ble elementær i forberedelsene til både operasjon Sjøløve og Barbarossa. I perioden operasjon Sjøløve var aktuell var Levante mindre i Norge - den skulle delta i angrepet på England. Men da fokuset ble skiftet østover gikk levante i trafikk mellom Trondheim og Kirkenes. Episoden tar opp noen av episodene, og du får høre et intervju, med tillatelse fra NRK, med Alfred Henningsen som var ombord i HMS Sea Nymph som forsøkte å senke henne.12.september 1944 går britiske fly til angrep på Levante og de fire støtteskipene. Denne gangen ender det fatalt for støtteskipene. 2 blir senket og et blir rent på grunn. Levante selv blir skutt i brann. Nå starter den aller mest dramatiske høsten i nordnorsk historie. BIFF 2025: Vi er i Bergen, og i denne første festivalepisoden fra årets utgave av BIFF rapporterer vi om et knippe filmer vi har sett, blant dem Mary Bronsteins If I Had Legs I'd Kick You og László Nemes' Orphan («Árva»).  Montages deltar denne uken på Bergen internasjonale filmfestival (BIFF), og sammen med vestlandshovedstadens engasjerte publikum og andre tilreisende gjester, har vi beveget oss inn ut av kinomørket de siste dagene og forsynt oss fra det rikholdige programmet festivalen har servert. Jake and Max Newport, Founders of Finnmark Sauna, welcome Stig Arild Pettersen, who is the Secretary General of the Norwegian Sauna Association (Norges Badstulaug), where he has been instrumental in building and strengthening Norway's sauna movement since taking on the role in 2023. A lifelong sauna enthusiast who lives on a small farm in Isfjorden in Møre og Romsdal, Stig oversees the day-to-day operations of the national organisation and serves as the primary liaison with members across Norway. A Sauna Talk from the British Sauna Summit, Tuesday, 20 May 2025 Hilton London Canary Wharf. Last year, Sauna Summit 2024 and 1.0, about 120 of us gathered rooftop at in Hackney. The spirit was both well organized like a conference, and yet intimate like a family gathering. This year, as attendance swelled to well north of 300, the Hilton Hotel ballroom provided a backdrop and familiarity of a “proper” (to use the British word) organized meeting. This is the evolution of sauna. What started as a somewhat jest and jovial organisation, like the growth of many things sauna, the British Sauna Society has ballooned into a structured membership of several hundred, representing the “saunapreneurs” of public saunas that dot the map of the UK's shoreline, streams, and urban communities. Yours truly was given the honour of announcing the winners of the second annual Sauna Summit Awards, which showcases outstanding saunas (Best Urban, Best Community, Best New, etc.). All of the contest participants are winners. And though there's surely pride and competition behind the curtain, yet what is displayed in the UK sauna scene is more collaboration and support. The Brits seem to recognize that the rising sauna tide lifts all public sauna boats. London Calling I am reminded of my time living in London. It was decades ago, and I had the dream job of music listings editor at Time Out magazine, where i'd have one on one relationship with the music venues (Dingwalls, Brixton Academy, etc.) and what stood out was the pricing structure of concert tickets. General admission at the top, then the list of discounted tickets (senior, student, unemployed, single parent, counsel estate resident, library card holder, etc.). It's ingrained in British culture to proudly support those underserved. And sauna culture today shares that “community support” ethos. America may face headwinds in this regard, being more capitalistic centric, yet Britain waves the flag of “serving their community” as evidence by the hundreds of saunas dotting their shoreline and beyond. Anyhow, in this episode we get to hear one on one conversations with folks from Harvia, Jake Newport from Finnmark, kindred spirit author Lassi Liikkanen, key Summit organizer Mark Lamb, his wife and author Emma O'kelly, Sauna from Finland Carita, Rob De Bank, and other folks “behind the scenes” and “between the action.” Notes from presentations at the British Sauna Summit: Carita 1.
