Comparing 1996's FROM DUSK TILL DAWN to the new SINNERS can feel a bit like, as Scott puts it, comparing “Chopsticks” to Beethoven's Fifth. But Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's sleazy vampire flick was clearly on Ryan Coogler's mind when crafting his own film about a pair of brothers who spend one fateful night defending a nightclub from an invading horde of the undead. Coogler's film also has much more on its mind beyond that pulpy premise, which we'll get into next week, but for now we're digging as deep as we can into the shallow pleasures and frustrating shortcomings of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, from the awkward but arguably endearing performances from George Clooney and Tarantino as fugitive brothers, to the moments that test the limits of Rodriguez's run-and-gun filmmaking approach — and yes, of course we have to talk about the foot stuff, too. Then in Feedback, we respond to a couple of listeners pushing back on some of our Cronenbergian categorization in the last pairing. Please share your thoughts about FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SINNERS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Over the decades, David Cronenberg has carved a distinctive and provocative filmography out of his interest in human decay and death, up to and including his new THE SHROUDS, a late-career entry in the writer-director's body-horror canon. It's a film that left some of us confounded in a way that our returning guest, critic Charles Bramesco, might argue is part of its Cronenbergian appeal; but placing it next to THE FLY in Connections clarifies how much it's simply an evolution of the same pet themes Cronenberg has been circling since 1986 (and earlier), from overlapping obsessions with the mutability of bodies and technology, to the horror and guilt of watching a loved one deteriorate before our very eyes. And in Your Next Picture Show, we're inspired to talk over another recent, highly personal project from an elder-statesman auteur that received a mixed reception, and which we never got to cover on the show: Francis Ford Coppola's MEGALOPOLIS. Please share your thoughts about THE FLY, THE SHROUDS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. We just dropped a new episode diving deep into "The Ugly Stepsister," the debut film from Emilie Blichfeldt. Prepare yourself for some serious Cronenbergian body horror in this twisted Cinderella retelling. It doesn't hold back on the gore or the moments that'll make you squirm. You've been warned!
The way David Cronenberg's new THE SHROUDS splices together unsettling ideas about technology and bodily transformation made us think of… well, a lot of his filmography, but the film's visceral interest in how the human body decays feels directly connected to the director's unlikeliest hit, his remake of THE FLY. We're joined this week by critic and our nascent “gross and scary” correspondent Charles Bramesco to teleport back to 1986 and examine what lies beneath the rotting flesh of THE FLY, from its tender central relationship to its oozing physical effects to its Howard Shore score, that makes it a distinctly Cronenbergian grossout. Then in Feedback, a listener uses our recent discussion of THE THIN MAN to broach a bigger question about what we value most in our mystery stories. Please share your thoughts about THE FLY, THE SHROUDS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Movie Meltdown - Episode 640 This episode, Sam Drog returns as we try to wrap our heads around just how ahead of its time David Cronenberg's Videodrome truly was back in 1983. And as we plug into the network of idiots, we also bring up… the evolutionary chart of man, Mick Garris, American Ultra, Scanners, YouTube rabbit holes, The Franchise, Debbie Harry, a movie every night on the UHF channels, the rubber reality and all the latex, Robert Pattinson, a cyber doppelganger of ourselves, The Lawnmower Man, Canadian tax shelter horror movies, Stan Winston, Crash, moving meat on a skeleton, Marshall McLuhan, an electrified clay wall, just give in to the technology, Rob Bottin, incubating your gun, I'm just a monkey, Spider, taking a normal person to a weird movie, talking to the TV, manifold expanded, propaganda films, you got Jim Henson on one end and Rick Baker on the other, mechanical extensions of humanity, Personal Shopper, I gave you guys the best movie I knew how to make and you didn't show up, shelter-in-place, the world is so big and overwhelming when I'm outside, Stephen Lack, being attached to our phones, we were so obsessed with super realistic puppets, you know a guy that works at the slaughterhouse that's all you need, when you take out the filter of humanity, the Ashton Kutcher of directors, we're kind of like cyborgs, getting your fix of television and the flesh gun. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for "Videodrome"… I mean, as much as you can spoil "Videodrome". “The technology came and I think our brains are still trying to catch up with all this connectivity.”
French Writer/Director Coralie Fargeat made her feature film debut with 2017's REVENGE, a visceral, vibrant, and often lyrical rape/revenge thriller. The film leaned hard into tropes usually reserved for more action oriented films featuring an initially victimized protagonist transforming into a lethal retributive anti-hero. Fargeat herself said she was directly influenced by films like Mad Max, Rambo, and Kill Bill. Revenge was a favorite of ours on the show in it's year of release, and one of the more notable genre feature film debuts in a decade full of them. She was also praised as one of the more exciting voices in contemporary feminist cinema, along with her contemporary Julia Ducournau (Raw, Titane), also hailing from France, as they both brought a woman's perspective and a contemporary lens to Cronenbergian body horror and psychosexual tension. Needless to say, we were optimistic and curious about what Fargeat would do next. "One single injection unlocks your DNA, starting a new cellular division, that will release another version of yourself. This is THE SUBSTANCE. Everything comes from you. Everything is you. This is simply a better version of yourself. You just have to share. One week for one and one week for the other. A perfect balance of seven days each. The one and only thing not to forget: YOU. ARE. ONE. You can't escape from yourself." It's the Who Goes There Podcast Episode 425! Join our Patreon if you enjoy and want to support the show! Coincidentally commemorating the 9 year anniversary of what's been dubbed one of the worst superhero movies ever made, we watched Josh Trank's 2015 mega-flop Fantastic Four a.k.a. Fant4stic this week. Doomed from the start by the competing forces of a hot young director and a studio trying to compete with the media conglomerate that will buy them two years later, the resulting attempt to reboot the Fantastic Four into darker, Cronenbergian territory was not so fantastic. It's stinks actually, but who's really to blame? Josh Trank? Fox? Kate Mara's wig? With the MCU's own iteration of Marvel's first family on the horizon, the time has finally come for us to figure out exactly what went wrong. Featuring the debut of our new fourth mic: Kevin Nguyen. Where do we begin? Ideally not here but it's what we've got. This is a weird one, where Andy Williams' face is waxier than the Muppet cheese and his joke delivery is cheesier than…also the Muppet cheese. It's also our second week in a row with a Cronenbergian nightmare. But there's also a puppy, and Frank Oz and Jim Henson remain very good at their jobs. Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". Thanks to Jonathan Romeo, #SpookyMonth for "Ninety For Chill: The #Podcast" is officially in full swing. He suggested that if you want to talk about a feature that instills fear into the hearts of all, regardless of faith, "The Exorcist" is the film to chat about. This is a flick that CatBusRuss needed to see, but at 2 hours 2 minutes, how can this podcast be the place to discuss it? Fortunately both Jonathan and Russ are patient cinema fanatics, so devising marathons to build up to a main event is a task they are both up for. At the previously established Six-Raven Movie House, Russ offers up three films with different means of exploring possession. His triple-feature opens with John Carpenter's tale of space Jesus vs. gooey devil "Prince of Darkness". The second bout of the card is Ash Williams vs. The Necronomicon with Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead 2". And for a co-main event, our host serves up a Cronenbergian feature, from the son Brandon Cronenberg with 2020's "Possessor". Is there anything more chilling than letting an assassin claim you body and determine it expendable? Enjoy the snacks and popcorn while figuring this out. As for what is showing at Jonathan's Palladium, he gets straight to the Italian-sourced gore with Lamberto Bava's "Demons". This is followed up by tackling the faith he was raised on with Rose Glass's "Saint Maud". And his 10 o'clock show is a Ninety For Chill favorite, Paul W.S. Anderson's "Event Horizon". With a grill and fully stocked bar at his cinema, you should be ready to handle anything "A Mind on Fire" throws at you.

Master of body-horror David Cronenberg helms what might be one of the least Cronenbergian movies in his filmography (at least we think. We haven't seen Fast Company). How does the pairing of folksy humanist Stephen King mix with the cold detachment of David Cronenberg? Listen and find out! Another Cronenberg so soon? Well in a manner of speaking, yes! This time we test drove Brandon Cronenberg's indie horror film, “Possessor.” Starring familiar faces from previous episodes as well, “Possessor” melds stunning visual design, spy thriller, sci-fi, and horror all into one. Moody and ethereal, with just the right splashes of Cronenbergian gore, the guys were impressed even if it didn't completely land on all the story elements. Tim and Ryan both rated this one a “rent” and had lots to dismember! If you're gonna spy, you better spy hard. Before the release of Lightyear, Kevin Parker fires up his engine to defend the movie that is *by far* the worst-reviewed and received Pixar movie, 2011's Cars 2. While not defending it as a masterpiece, Kevin believes the Mater-driven car spy movie is easily the best entry in the much-maligned franchise. We go deep into the more creative world-building, the improved protagonist, the Cronenbergian body horror of these movies, their weirdly conservative undertones, and make fun of Lightning McQueen for just being a terrible character.

France's entry for this year's Oscars is the extraordinary Titane. Beginning as a Cronenbergian body horror movie, Titane constantly plays with genre, while simultaneously dealing with themes of grief, gender identity, and queerness. The film also features scenes depicting mechanophilia - a sexual attraction to machines. Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones explore the multiple cinematic connections and influences that make up Titane's DNA. Mark speaks to the film's director Julia Ducournau, whose previous feature was 2016's Raw - the story of a young vegetarian who develops a taste for human flesh. And Ellen investigates the phenomenon of mechanophilia on screen, with the help of film academic Christine Cornea. Psychotherapist Professor Brett Kahr tells her about the condition and why relationships with machines or objects may develop. And she also hears from director Zoe Wittock, whose recent film Jumbo explored mechanophilia in its depiction of a female protagonist falling in love with Jumbo, a fairground ride. Screenshot is Radio 4's guide through the ever-expanding universe of the moving image. In perhaps our most Cronenbergian episode of all time, we do a little bit of body-ody-ody horror as a treat. In an extravaganza of all things fecal, urinal, and genital, we skinny dip in the wet primordial ooze of human experience wearing nothing but a white crop top-- and emerge, nipples protruding. This week, we talk about Meghan Trainor taking a shit adjacent to her husband-- and do an exposé on our own horror about bodily functions. What's the most compromising position it's OK for your partner to see you in? Is it *ever* okay to shit in the company of others? Should we de-normalize shitting? Plus, we talk about the controversial Pitchfork rescores and the state of music criticism. And that's NOT all, if you can freakin' believe it-- we also talk about the rising phenomenon of gay guys wanting to protect the sanctity of butt sex-- by taking aim at the elusive trans gay guy. How do so many gay guys exist that don't have a place in functional society? What entitles someone to claim being a man? Is *dick* what makes people gay? Filip Jan Rymsza is a Polish filmmaker who has had a varied career in the business. In 2018 he helped spearhead the completion of The Other Side Of The Wind, the final film from Orson Welles, as well as producing Morgan Neville's They'll Love Me When I'm Dead, a documentary which detailed the making of Welles' film. Filip's latest release is Mosquito State, a thriller which he produced, directed and co-wrote. A clinically precise piece of filmmaking, Mosquito State is a psychological thriller that verges towards Cronenbergian body horror. Rymsza's film is more than that though, it uses the 2007 financial crisis as a stepping-off point and manages to create a piece which takes place in the recent past but feels like it could be set a hundred years in the future. Filip Jan Rymsza joined the Movies In Focus podcast to talk about Mosquito State, discussing the inception, casting and production of this mesmerising piece of cinema.

Adam and Ben just watched the new film 'Possessor Uncut' by Brandon Cronenberg, son of Systems of Systems godhead David Cronenberg, and find one of the most mesmerizing works of Baudrillardian, postmodern body horror cinema since daddy Cronenberg's 'Videodrome.' Adam detects a new "futureshock narrative," as philosopher Nick Land identified in cyberpunk literature and film, from William Gibson to 'Terminator,' while Ben hones in on the film's visualization of the apotheosis of post neoliberal, PMC culture (the 'Great Reset' indeed). The duo also briefly discusses Irish actor Gabriel Byrne coming out as Hollywood's first open strasserite. Logan and Jono are back to discuss our Lovecraft recommendation of the week before jumping into recapping both episodes 4 and 5 of HBO's Lovecraft Country. "Are priests allowed to vote?" Some real Cronenbergian body horror in this episode as we discover a freethinker who avoids the 'rona by slithering along like a snake, a bathroom carpeted with hair, and Jamie Oliver's wide wide tongue. Very normal podcast. We get to these topics by discussing the difference between sliced bread and toast, a neighbour, a greedy apple-fiend, stealing apples, being a radical freethinker not like the rest of the sheeple, sweeteners in lemonade and which fictional British characters are shy Tories, and going to bed at Pimms o'clock.

This week, cellists best beware as we welcome Eric Charmelo, acclaimed writer behind THE PERFECTION, as well as popular TV shows like RINGER, SUPERNATURAL, and MIDNIGHT, TEXAS! Among other things, Eric discusses his draw to stories about "identity in crisis," why being gay is a somewhat Cronenbergian experience, and the fascinating & voracious queer following of SUPERNATURAL! Plus, Eric shares how the work of John Waters continues to inform his own.

On this month's epsiode we get our custom-made (for mutants) instruments out and give David Cronenberg's horror filmography a thorough examination, with particular attention given to 1975's Shivers and 1986's The Fly. Plus, we let you know what we think of the new Halloween movie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and there's a Cronenbergian round of Scary Noises! And if that's not enough, you also get to hear Bryony sing!
This week we discuss A Cure for Wellness (2016), Gore Verbinski's ambitious and gorgeous film intermixing The Road to Wellville (1994) and Shutter Island (2010) with a dash of Frankenstein (1931). We explore how over-eating could defeat James Bond, along with the moral sensibilities of this film (and how you shouldn't watch this with your mother), the link between eel-swallowing and mind control, the occasional impracticality of "obsession laboratory" lair architecture, and the stylings of Cronenbergian shock value in the film.
We take a look at what might be the least Cronenberg-ish of all the Cronenberg works, aside from the commercial he did for Nike Air 180s back in the day. It's proto-Cronenbergian!

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday this weekend, it's time to look back at this country's greatest cinematic achievements. A sizeable amount come from Toronto filmmaker David Cronenberg, who having made 21 features between 1969 and 2014, has received top honours at Cannes, the Berlin Film Festival, and TIFF. In 1999, Cronenberg was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002, and received Cannes’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. In 2014, after a worldwide exhibit of his film’s artifacts titled David Cronenberg: Evolution was held at TIFF, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada for his contribution as “Canada’s most celebrated internationally acclaimed filmmaker.” He also has the uncanny ability to make car crashes sexy and heads literally explode (the moment in SCANNERS, which inspired Morgan Spurlock to become a filmmaker). In fact, Canadian film would be nothing without his signature Cronenbergian "body horror." To honour a living legend, still making movies at age 74, we've unearthed a 2014 onstage talk between David and his two key collaborators, producer Jeremy Thomas and makeup and special effects designer Stephan Dupuis. You can listen to the full TIFF Uncut podcast below and if you're feeling festive, watch a free screening of Cronenberg's 1983 film VIDEODROME, part of a free Canada on Screen marathon of movies screening July 1 at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

This was the second of two podcasts I recorded while on my mountain vacation this past September; it took me a little longer to get around to editing this one. We take a few moments to mourn the loss of one of the greatest genre cinema podcasters of all time, Vince Rotolo of the B-Movie Cast, who passed away this past April (yeah, I know, but better late than never when it comes to respecting a legend), and I make an announcement about a slight change to the show. We then take our first steps into the wacky, gimmick-filled world of director William Castle, who never met a gag he didn't like, with a consideration of 1959's The Tingler, featuring the inimitable Vincent Price as a medical examiner obsessed with the nature of fear and its effects on the human body in an almost proto-Cronenbergian fashion. While not Castle's first or most popular gimmick-based film, it's my personal favorite and gives a good cross-section of what to expect of a movie bearing his name. So strap in, enjoy, and if you start to feel the tingle of fear, don't forget to SCREAM FOR YOUR LIFE!Peace,-RDNSpecial thanks to Cort from Cinema PSYOPS for giving me some pointers to help make my show sound a little better.Episode #008 - The TinglerMusic:"Pippin the Hunchback" - Kevin MacLeod - www.incompetech.com"Springtime for Hitler" - Mel Brooks & John Morris - The Producers Original Sountrack"Tenebrous Brothers Carnival - Act One" - Kevin MacLeod - www.incompetech.com"Spider Eyes" - Kevin MacLeod - www.incompetech.comhttp://archive.org/download/EPISODE008THETINGLER/EPISODE_008_THE_TINGLER.mp3

In this week’s podcast we go to the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. First, we look at Chemsex, the VICE media documentary peering into the “party and play” scene among gay men in the UK. Then we go to the crumbling Euro-chic mansions of Peter Strickland’s critically acclaimed The Duke of Burgundy, a Sapphic, sadomasochistic psychological romance. And finally we experience The New New Queer Cinema of Closet Monster, the much hailed debut from Canadian newcomer Peter Dunn, which combines queer coming-of-age, Cronenbergian body horror and a pet hamster voiced by Isabella Rossellini.
Michaela returns with an episode that may be a little overdue, Haunted house films. Personally, we love them. There's so many to choose from! Classic films, cult hits, even some of the newer films are outstanding. So, why did Stevil screw up so badly in his choice? I think he'll chalk it up to bad advertisement. Either way, we have at least three fantastic ghostly films to scare you with. These are our Staff Picks of the Week: Matty hit the IMAX for the first of his two staff picks, Interstellar. Christopher Nolan dazzles again in this fantastically scientific adventure film that you'll need a degree to full follow. For his other pick, Matty brings the John Carpenteresque The Purge: Anarchy, the big scale follow up to the low budget 2013 original. A synth score backing a Frank Grillo led action suspense film in a style reminiscent of Escape From New York. We love that. Michaela was on vacation! She should have to be expected to bring a staff pick! Of course, like any good movie fan, she visited a nearby Red Box and picked up Tom Cruise's sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow. Or is it Live Die Repeat? Or Tom Cruises's Edge of Tomorrow? It's debatable, but the studio didn't make it easy. During the discussion before the podcast, Stevil was talking about one of the actor in his haunted house pick being cast in more American films, leading JJ to remember a film he checked out starring this actor. The Drop is a gritty drama starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Repace and featuring the last performance from James Gandolfini. Oh and there's a puppy in it too. Tom Hardy and a puppy, prepare for a world wide swoon. Stevil grazes the Nolanverse a little bit with his pick, which he strongly recommends you DON'T watch. Transcendence is a film that he was very much looking forward to but kept eluding him for one reason of another. Wally Pfister has always been a great cinematographer, but could he make a smooth transition to directing? The answer is no, no, he can't. This movie is a mess of terrible screenwriting, unoriginal ideas and completely wasted actors. And Nolan almost made this before Interstellar? Really? For the main subject of our episode on Haunted House films, our panel explains why they made their choices: "I'm suppose to do a write up for my pick for our Haunted House podcast, but I don't think I have to. That's because I picked The Shining. I shouldn't have to tell you how amazing this movie is. If you haven't seen this classic, what is wrong with you? Change That. Now. This is the king of psychological haunted house horror movies. Watch Jack Nicholson's brillant descent into madness while being directed by the great Stanley Kubrick." - @mattydub604 "I was in the mood for something spooky and decided to keep the Halloween spirit going with a Haunted House cast. In my opinion, one of the best haunted house movies ever made is Poltergeist, so I just had to bring it. I love this movie. It is one of the first horror films I saw as a child, and it remains a solid favourite. The film is packed full of genuinely creepy moments, and I think it stands up as a horror classic to this day." - @avidcinephile "When you think "haunted house movies" a lot of the classics come to mind. I wanted to bring something a little more off the beaten path with this genre. The 2007 Spanish masterpiece, The Orphanage, I thought would be a perfect pick. With its wonderful performance, genuinely eerie feel, and an ending that, if you have any soul whatsoever, will leave you totaled, The Orphanage goes down as one of my favorite films in the past decade." - @hesthejage "I feel like this episode is going to haunt me for the rest of my days and I know by the subject matter it's going to sound like I'm punning, but I'm not. My co-hosts won't let me forget this one, because, yes, I screwed up. I was duped by the back cover of my recently bought copy of Left Bank, a disturbing little Cronenbergian body horror film out of Denmark. Am I saying it's terrible? No, but it's not fantastic either, bottom line is it was the wrong choice for this cast. Should have stuck with my original choice...." - @thestevildead What is the scariest haunted house movie in your opinion? Do you or did you enjoy our picks? Listen to the episode and let us know what you think in the comments below! We leave you with this clip of Shelley Duvall describing her time working for Stanley Kubrick on The Shining. http://youtu.be/35RwbQhMVUE
This week on the Nightmare on Film Street horror movie podcast, Kimmi and Jon are taking a dip into the sun-soaked nightmare of Brandon Cronenberg's Infinity Pool (2023). What starts as a luxurious vacation for James Foster (Alexander Skarsgård) quickly unravels into a dark, unsettling world where crime comes without the usual consequences—because if you can afford it, someone else will pay the price for you. Literally. After a freak accident, James is introduced to a disturbing practice involving clones, where the wealthy can sidestep responsibility in truly horrifying ways. The deeper James goes, the more he's drawn into a twisted world of excess, indulgence, and blood-soaked thrills that blur the line between punishment and pleasure (all shepherded by an unhinged Mia Goth). Is Infinity Pool a sharp critique of the privilege money brings, or just an invitation to lose yourself in Cronenbergian chaos?
