Can intention alone cause changes in physical systems? Can the collective attention of a large group of people to an event cause changes in the coherence changes in physical systems, despite that lack of intention to do so?In today's episode we're going to be exploring a field consciousness hypothesis: so a variation on the idea that consciousness may extend beyond the body and interact casually with physical systems and the consciousness of other beings, in some kind of resonant field phenomena. We're going to be learning about the experiments with random number generators used to test this hypothesis; how human intention and attention has been proved to be able to affect these random outputs in a vast backlog of positive results and meta analyses; We're going to hear about how these experiments have been taken global, looking at collective effects on RNGs of particularly important world events that many people are attending to; we're going to be looking at criticisms of the statistical analysis and a potential experimenter effect; and we're going to be talking about the contrast between some seemingly non-local effects with other localised effects; and as always we're going to be getting into the implications, in this case of whether the ‘field consciousness' effect the data seems to point to, is more likely to be a unified field of consciousness, so in some sense a single mind, or simply the aggregated sum of all individual consciousnesses. Now fortunately to guide us as we carefully test the thickness of the ice on this genuinely alternative world view of consciousness, we have the cognitive psychologist that has pioneered these field consciousness experiments since he founded the Global Consciousness Project at the Princeton University PEAR labs, Roger Nelson. Roger worked at Princeton's PEAR labs in the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, initially under Bob Jahn, for over twenty years until his retirement in 2002. He is also the author of the book “Connected: The emergence of global consciousness”.What we discuss:00:00 Intro.07:30 Random Number generator ‘mind-matter interaction' experiments at Princeton PEAR labs.21:10 Bob Jahn - Dean of Engineering at Princeton.28:45 Emotional and passionate group events saw coherence in the RNG experiments. 33:00 Contrast between apparent local and non-local effects.37:55 David Bohm's Implicate / Explicate order concept.38:55 “Pilot wave” and “active information” link between the implicite and the explicate.43:55 Statistical results generation and analysis of significance.49:05 The sceptics criticisms.51:45 The Global Consciousness Project methodology. 53:05 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's mind sphere, called ‘Noosphere'.57:45 Measuring the group coherence of Princess Diana's funeral.01:00:25 The 9/11 Results.01:05:55 The emotional component in coherence.01:18:40 The quantity of people and strength of the emotion, whether positive or negative, raises the effect size.01:11:10 A single collective consciousness VS an aggregate of all individual consciousnesses. 01:14:50 Different levels of collective consciousness above individual bodies.01:16:55 The analogy of individuals being like neurones in a cosmic brain.01:20:55 The Experimenter effect criticism.01:26:10 The Helmut Schmidt “Unobserved tape” experiment.01:29.10 The indeterminate state before observer ‘collapses of the wave function' analogy to explain results.01:37:25 The Schmidt ‘retrocausation' hypothesis.References:Roger Nelson, “Connected: the Emergence of Global Consciousness”Robert Jahn And Brenda Dunn, “Margins of Reality”International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) Publishing.Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, “The Phenomena of man”

#294 In today's episode, we will discuss 15 side hustles that you can start today with little to no money! I've never really loved the term "side hustle" I don't love the word hustle and don't buy into hustle culture. And the word side hustle to me has always implied something you kinda did on the side and didn't take too seriously. But my perspective on this term has changed somewhere recently. A few months ago I started listening to a podcast called The Side Hustle Show with Nick Loper. The combination of hearing stories from Nick's guests on different side hustles they have started and interviewing and working with others who have started side hustles of their own either as a way to start their business or as a way to help make some extra income on the side has caused me to be more open to this term and open to the fact that not everyone is wired like me. And for some people that means starting something on the side that can either support their family for a season or later on turn into that thriving scalable business with systems and processes which is what I REALLY love! BUT you gotta start somewhere and for many, that means starting something on the side... In today's episode, Brien Gearin interviews the Kind of Side Hustle himself, Nick Loper, and they go into depth on 15 side hustles that you can start today! This has been one of my favorite episodes so far and I got a ton of value out of it personally and I have no doubt you will as well! But from a start washing dishes and practicing with leftover dough after the cooks had gone home, Mariano is now living in Australia where he's the executive chef at pizza restaurants Gradi Group, the owner of a catering company and an irrepressible pizza experimenter and innovator. Join Alex and guest host Sophie Halliday as they chat about the historical and psychological impact of Stanley Milgram's famous experiments on obedience and social influence in Michael Almereyda's Experimenter (2015), the other historical psychology movie that came out that year. This biopic stars Peter Sarsgaard as the titular character, with Winona Ryder, Jim Gaffigan, and several other star appearances as participants in the obedience studies. This witty drama-comedy takes the audience into the creation and data collection of the shock studies, but also other social influence experiments Milgram conducted over his 30ish year career. There are so many fourth wall breaks, you feel like Milgram is talking directly to the audience, to get his side of the story that followed him throughout his career. Would you shock someone because the experiment — AND SCIENCE! — demanded it? I had a t-shirt in college that was my prized possession. It read: "There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't." Meet Felicita Brusoni, Italian singer and voice researcher. Felicita is pursuing a doctorate at Malmö Academy of Music is Sweden (part of Lund University) where she is working on a project called “A Voice Beyond the Edge.” One of her main mentors is composer Michael Edgerton, author of The 21st Century Voice: Contemporary and Traditional Extra Normal Voice which is a catalog of vocal sounds that often comes up in conversations about extended vocal techniques. As the name of Felicita's artistic research project implies, this is definitely going to be an episode for voice geeks but also for those who like the bizarre. Felicita and I talk about the inaccuracy of the term “extended vocal techniques,” about the somewhat hard-to-define but increasingly popular discipline of “artistic research,” about the difference between extended techniques in the mid-20th century and today, about Felicita's fresh discovery that humans can produce ultrasounds, but also about singers Cathy Berberian and even Maria Callas and, at the end, Felicita even tries to teach me an extended technique I hadn't done before – to mixed results. We had the pleasure of interviewing Bryan Senti over Zoom video.Rising composer and violinist/violist Bryan Senti's new album Manu is out now on Naïve Records.Manu is the first crossover album for the classically trained Senti, a first-generation Cuban/Mexican- and Colombian-American, combining western neo-classical traditions with the Latin American folk music his parents grew up with.Unique among classical releases, the parts of Manu were recorded individually, enabling the record to be released in Dolby Atmos as well as with a traditional audio mix. This unusual recording process gave engineer Francesco Donadello a unique opportunity to push the mixes, creating an illusion of three-dimensionality that plays on the psychedelic character of the music. In 2020, Senti turned 38 and had his first child. “When I thought about the stories that I wanted to impart to her, the things I wanted her to learn from me, I thought back on what things I had learned as a child, or wished I had learned,” he says of writing Manu. “What I wished I had learned was an ability to cherish both a Hispanic and American identity equally.”Bryan Senti is based in Los Angeles; recent collaborations include projects with Dustin O'Halloran and Peter Gregson for Deutsche Grammophon. His film and TV career began with Michael Almereyda's Experimenter in 2014 and since then he has worked on multiple films and TV shows including the BAFTA winning series “Save Me” (2021) by Lennie James. Currently he's scoring the BBC 3 musical “Mood” by Nicôle Lecky. In addition to working on classical music, Senti's experimental pop project Ex Mykah is signed to the London-based Kowloon Records and his LP 16, 17 was released in 2018. He also collaborated with Mark Ronson on his production Carbon Life, performed by the Royal Ballet, and has toured and recorded for the Canadian singer-songwriter Feist.Senti received a master's in music composition from The Yale School of Music in 2009.We want to hear from you! #411: In this episode, Mike Gardon chats with Jeff Rose. Jeff Rose is a devoted husband and father of four. He's made millions as an internet, entrepreneur and YouTuber with a following of over 340,000, but it wasn't always like that. Jeff didn't know what he wanted to do with his career when he was young, but a key to Jeff's evolution is he's always followed his curiosity. He's ran experiments when he was unsure of the next apps and he was humble enough to seek help along the way. Jeff's story starts with his own thirst for knowledge on how to manage money. He became a certified financial planner, got into blogging in order to differentiate himself in his practice and wound up building an online media site (GoodFinanciaCents.com) that made him way more than his practice, which he had been grinding at for over five years. None of it happened on purpose yet. None of it happened by chance either. Jeff's story proves the point that you don't have to have it all figured out as long as you stay curious and make decisions to continuously invest in yourself.

This week's guest is Lori Bradley. She's the Vice President for Talent at Chewy. Lori sees the management and development of talent through multiple lenses. Academic. Strategic. Intellectual. For sure. But the perspective she brings that sits on top of all of these is the most important of all. The human one. Here's something you already know if you listen to this podcast. People that choose to work in creative business are complicated and unpredictable. Despite which, so many business try so very hard to build single model operations that view all members of a group or a department or a discipline as being the same. No wonder that most businesses leave millions of dollars of untapped creativity and innovation on the table every night. Lori used the word experiment three times in about ten seconds. Can you remember the last time that word was used in any leadership team meeting you've been part of in the last few months? There's no way back. There's no one way forward. And no way of knowing which way is going to work. The future is waiting to be invented - by those who are brave enough to experiment.

Can intention, attention or expectation affect random physical events? In this episode we're going to be exploring the subtleties of an odd phenomenon: the Experimenter Effect, where the expectations of the scientist doing an experiment appear to affect the results measured. This is hugely important for the right practice of science, and for understanding why some experiments that seem watertight methodologically can only be reproduced by scientists who expect the same results and not by sceptics of the hypothesis. Who better to discuss this with than a scientist who ran into this while trying to disprove the the influence of consciousness in a physical system, Professor Garret Moddel; Dr. Moddel is Professor of Electrical and Quantum engineering at Colorado University, specialising in Solar cells, metal-insulator technology and geometric diodes, and optoelectronics among other extraordinary technologies. He also runs a separate psi phenomena lab. He is also one of the former presidents of the groundbreaking research organisation the Society of Scientific Exploration. This conversation looks inward towards our very own human nature, and the movie Experimenter explores obedience to authority. Mfon, Onyeka, and Stanley explore Stanley Milgram's experiments, as revealed in the movie. Inasmuch as the Milgram experiments occurred in the 60's, there appears to be some relevance in today's society. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/reeltalkextra/message
In this film, Noreen Masud talks to James Bailey about his new book, Muriel Spark's Early Fiction: Literary Subversion and Experiments with Form. They discuss Spark's brevity, polish and precision, 'the impossibility of her novels', the way Spark was able to write first drafts that were also finished versions. We hear that 'the experimental creates cracks into which we might creep', Spark's multimedia experiments enabling literary researchers to take similar risks in the forms and methods of their work. James and Noreen tell us too about the two amazing archives Spark has left us, one filled with receipts, diaries and correspondence, the other with working manuscripts of mid-composition notes and research. Very different views of Spark emerge depending on which of these archives we see her from, and this is just one example of how James' new book has reset the terms in which we might understand this vital and vitality-rich novelist.
The fact that Steve and JJ both enjoyed Michael Almereyda's 2015 film Experimenter would lead you to believe that they would be inclined to enjoy his 2020 film TESLA. But anachronisms abound! Edison scrolling on a smartphone? Tesla karaoke? Just what is going on in this film? Steve and JJ debate the type of film this is. Is it a narrative? Is it a documentary? Is it a docu-narrative? Does a narrator telling us that an event we see portrayed in the film is “pretty surely not how it happened” allow us to question the veracity of everything we see? Who is singing karaoke, Nikola Tesla or Ethan Hawke? They may not agree on the answers, but what they do agree on is that this is a film that takes risks, even if trips over itself, stumbles, and struggles to tell a coherent story.
