There are days when the pain still hits hard, and I know many of you understand what that feels like. A special moment happened recently that I believe was a sign from my mom – a cardinal appeared on my windowsill, reminding me that she's always with me, even if she's no longer here physically. It was a beautiful reminder that while grief never truly goes away, love stays with us. The Power of Self-Care As always, I'm a huge advocate for self-care, and this episode is packed with tips to help you manage stress and prioritize your mental health. American hockey player Adam Johnson, who appeared in 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 and 2020, has died after his neck was cut by a skate blade during a game in England on Saturday, his team said. He was 29. Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered the skate cut during the second period of the Elite Ice Hockey League game at Sheffield's Utilita Arena. Johnson's injury was so horrific it forced the game to be abandoned and left traumatised fans in tears. “The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” the team said on Sunday. “The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam's family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing.” His mother Kari shared two photos with her son on social media, writing: “I lost half of my heart today.” Shocking video from the game, which the Herald has chosen not to share, shows a Sheffield Steelers' player knock into one of Johnson's teammates before becoming completely airborne and connecting with the Panther's player. According to the Daily Mail, Yorkshire Ambulance Service were called at around 8.21pm and sent two ambulances and a critical care paramedic. Johnson was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital. South Yorkshire Police were contacted four minutes later, and confirmed that Johnson was pronounced dead at hospital. Police officers remained at the scene overnight and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. A Minnesota native, Johnson spent 13 games over parts of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons playing for Pittsburgh in the NHL before spending the 2020-21 season in Sweden with the Malmo Redhawks. He had a goal and three assists for the Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the life of Adam Johnson, whose life tragically ended far too soon,” the Penguins said Sunday in a statement. “We offer our deepest condolences to Adam's family and friends, as well as all of Adam's past and present teammates and coaches. Adam will always be part of the Penguins family.” Johnson played college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth, helping the Bulldogs reach two NCAA Tournaments. He scored an overtime game-winner in the 2017 tournament, sending Minnesota-Duluth to the Frozen Four by beating Boston University. He also played for three American Hockey League clubs during his career and in Germany with the Augsburger Panther in 2022-23 before agreeing to join Nottingham for this season. “Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today's news,” the team added. “The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances. Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him.” The league announced that all three games scheduled for Sunday in Belfast, Fife and Guildford were postponed following Johnson's death. Nottingham's game scheduled for Tuesday also was postponed. Ian Laperriere, who coached Johnson with the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms, said it was tough news. “Great kid [and] teammate,” Laperriere said in a text message. “Only great things to say about him.” The NHL has had skate cut scares throughout its history, most notably Buffalo goaltender Clint Malarchuk, who took a blade to the neck during a game against St Louis on March 22, 1989. Malarchuk received rapid medical attention and played again 10 days later. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Max talks with former NHL Goaltender Clint Malarchuk on his awful accident, contemplating suicide, PTSD, stigma of mental illness and more.
Clint Malarchuk nearly bled out on national television when an opponent's skate came up and slit his jugular. Years later, he pointed a rifle to his chin and pulled the trigger. If the skate or the bullet had traveled another centimeter, he would not be here today. Clint made an NHL All-Star team. He coached some of the greatest goaltenders of our generation. Yet he considers his book, "A Matter of Inches: How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond", his crowning achievement. In it, he tells all: about the abuse he endured as a child, his battles with OCD, depression and addiction, and how he became a pioneer for mental health awareness in hockey. ************************************ This episode was presented by Gateway Foundation. First hour of Vikings talkers! Ex-NHL'er Clint Malarchuk joins to discuss mental health and hockey midway through, and Gleeman is in studio for the final hour.
Clint Malarchuk's life can't be summarized in a few words. But I'll try. Very successful NHL career as a goalie. Great sense of humor. Strength, kindness, and a huge heart. Rancher. Tougher than nails. Mix in severe mental health illness, anxiety, crippling OCD, depression, alcoholism, rehab centers, and a suicide attempt. “I've had a lot of surgeries, a lot of physical pain. I tell you what. The most painful thing in the world is mental illness. I'd rather have my jugular vein cut again. If God gave me the choice “Hey Clint, want to have your vein cut again and get rid of this mental illness?” I'd say ‘Sign me up, God!'” Each one of us is a puzzle, with each of the pieces representing a part of us; our health, emotions, work, play, interests, and so on, and we do our best to keep that puzzle as close to being solved as possible. Wait until you hear all about the pieces in Clint's puzzle, and you'll want to know so much more about him, his message of hope for all who suffer through the pain and darkness of mental illness, and how his story can open up new doors and return the light to the darkness you or anyone in your circle is going through. “The book really started the whole thing. I was so terrified when I wrote the book because I didn't know how it would be perceived. I threw it all out there. It was pretty honest, pretty raw. It's not just a hockey book, or a book about an athlete. It's more of a book on life – a life with mental illness and alcoholism and childhood trauma.” Yes, we recorded this live at his Canuck Ranch in Nevada, with dogs wrestling, the wind started howling and honestly not the best audio sound recording. But it was an incredible experience. I can't wait to hear from you once you've listened to this episode. Happy listening. “Wow there's a lot of Clint Malarchuks out there. I'm helping people, and it's turning into a good career as a speaker. I love it because I know when I give a speech, and there's a line at the book signing, and people in tears and hugging me and saying ‘I'm going to get help' and ‘You're the first person that's been so honest and open'. So what we do is suffer in silence because of the stigma surrounding mental illness, so I think I'm trying to knock down that door.” Some Topics we talk about in this episode: 0:55 – Intro 1:55 – Welcome from the Canuck Ranch in NV! 3:30 – Hockey kept me out of my head 5:00 – Clint's book one of best athlete autobiographies 6:35 – Bernie Parent was my favorite player 9:20 – Undiagnosed severe OCD as child 12:35 – First NHL game 19:15 – Anxiety, depression and OCD combo 20:15 – Horrific injury to jugular vein 24:05 – Reliving the trauma, sleepless nights 24:30 – Self-medicating with 25 beers / day 25:35 – Horses on the golf course with Dale Hunter 27:00 – Joking with Ronald Reagan 28:45 – Mom - “You should be proud that someone wants your autograph!” 31:00 – Relapse started after Zednick jugular injury 32:00 – Spiraling down and attempting suicide 34:45 – The “Alcatraz” treatment center 37:15 – Public speaking about PTSD 38:30 – There's a lot of Clint Malarchuks out there 39:45 – You're Not Alone! 40:35 – A lot of people say “Me Too!” 42:00 – Why this tattoo? 45:00 – Outro How to get involved: Connect with me on Social Media @MarkMoyerCoach and go to my website, www.markmoyer.com to get access to the tips and strategies that my coaching clients get directly. In our newest episode of "They Actually Survived" Andy takes us through the story of an NHL player, Clint Malarchuk that suffered one of the most horrific injuries in hockey history when his neck was sliced open by an ice skate during a hockey game. Salina shares the story of Jose Salvador Alvarenga and his incredible story of surviving being lost at sea for a very long time! Jose goes down in history as being lost at sea the longest!
In 1989, Canadian ice hockey goaltender Clint Malarchuk was playing for top National Hockey League team the Buffalo Sabres, when he suffered a horrific injury to his neck. Knowing his mother was watching the NHL match on live TV, he staggered off the ice. Luckily Clint survived and within ten days he was back playing for his team - everyone called him a hero. What many didn't see was the impact the incident had on his mental health. In the following years, the repercussions of that day would take him to one of the darkest moments of his life. Clint's now written a book called A Matter of Inches: How I Survived the Crease and Beyond. Welcome back to Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Here! We have an open conversation with Scott about his time in the NHL and being diagnosed with anxiety and depression and how that affected his later years. You'll hear how Scott handled the aftermath of his injury and how he realized the importance of choosing every day to take new steps towards growth and healing. Episode 9 of The Not Another Sports Podcast is here! One this episode David continues to ask Jason for updates on his Fantasy Football season. This time David gets an unexpected response. Clearly Jason is having quite the season. The 1st period topic this episode is a question from friend of the show Brad from the Baseball Together Podcast. He was curious on their thoughts on why hockey players seem to have longer careers than baseball players. David and Jason both give their thoughts on why this is. David himself who played amateur hockey had some great insight into why this may be. They also compared hockey to baseball, basketball, and soccer. Specifically the mental and physical aspects of the game. They wrap up the segment by discussing the toughness of former goalie Clint Malarchuk playing 10 days after almost dying on the ice in 1989. In the 2nd period they discuss Snow Games. Jason leads off with the 1982 Snowplow Game between the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins. David discusses the 2008 Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabers. They discuss what made each game memorable as well as why snow games in particular are so special in the world of North American sports. Finally in the 3rd period they talk about Unlucky Teams. Jason and David each looked at this topic from two different perspectives. Jason brings 3 teams who have a history of bad luck with bad seasons, wasting talent, and so on. The teams he talked about are the Detroit Lions(NHL), The Baltimore Orioles(MLB), and the Orlando Magic(NBA). David however discussed 3 teams who have not performed well in their leagues respective playoffs. He spoke about the Boston Bruins (NHL), The Buffalo Bills (NFL), and Philadelphia Phillies (MLB). We have also created a YouTube watchlist with clips based on references on the episode which you can find here. Clint and his wife shared how he was overwhelmed with rage. Clint was angry at himself. Angry with his wife for demanding her get help. Angry at his disorder, for taking so much away from him.
