Ahmed Al-kadri! Comedian! Friend! Guy with a new special called "Special Not Special"! Delight! Here are some words straight from Ahmed's press release: Yemeni-American comedian, Ahmed Al-kadri is poised to release his first comedy special, Special Not Special on February 24th via YouTube. As a Yemeni-American navigating the cultural maze of an immigrant household in Dallas, Texas, Ahmed brings his striking goofy charm to tales that span the spectrum of life's absurdities from taking mushrooms at a Lizzo concert and playing Taboo with his brothers to the comedic nuances of dual cultural identities. The hour offers the telling of uproarious misadventures involving drug-dealing escapades, dating mishaps, and a slew of other silly situations as Ahmed turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. In his own words the special “really just answers the question “who is Ahmed Al-kadri.” But Special Not Special is more than just laughs; it's a rollercoaster ride through the complexities of growing up Yemeni-American, where every moment, whether it's special or not, is infused with Ahmed's unique brand of humor and cultural identity. Said Al-kadri: “The motivation behind this special stems from a desire to bridge cultural gaps through laughter. Comedy has a remarkable ability to transcend boundaries and connect people on a human level. Writing this material involved mining my own life for humorous anecdotes, embracing vulnerability, and finding the universal truths in the specifics of my experiences.” Ahmed Al-kadri is a Yemeni-American comedian based in LA. As a young child in Dallas, Ahmed dreamed of being an accountant, but his immigrant parents forced him to be a comedian instead. Ahmed started developing his comedy skills early, doing impressions of his mom's Turkish soap operas and Mr. Bean, as well as spot-on imitations of his sister and brothers. Ahmed's father was an extrovert who loved to help people. Ahmed credits this as one of the reasons he relates so well to everyone- his house was always full of visitors who his parents were hosting; often offering a place to sleep if it was needed. Consequently, Ahmed was one of those kids who was friends with everybody, memorizing one-liners from his dad and trying them out on the kids at school the next day. Between go-kart races and soccer with his five siblings, Ahmed had a classic American childhood, playing “ding-dong ditch” and throwing Taco Bell sauce packets at cars. He started his career in 2016 taking an improv class at Dallas Comedy House and has been hooked ever since. He has performed in numerous improv, sketch, and stand up comedy shows at his old stomping grounds. With his improv troupe, Sunglow, he headlined Dallas Comedy House on weekends and traveled across the country performing in various comedy festivals before moving to Los Angeles in 2018 to pursue a career in Stand Up. Over the last year, Ahmed has gained a following on TikTok and Instagram with some of his most notable work such as "Roommates with Anxiety" , "F-Boi Rehab", or "Arab at an Indian Wedding" ; his was content featured on Buzzfeed and DankMemes. You may recognize him on Fox's Love Connection or “Liam” from the series “David Diamondhands.” Special Not Special is now available on YouTube for free. And THAT'S what it is! Myq here again, letting you know that this is only the first HALF of our conversation. For the second bonus half, subscribe via Apple Podcasts or click on over here to Patreon! Thanks so much all!
Anyone can feel anxious, but when anxiety starts impacting your life, it can be problematic. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers confront their worries. Part 1: Devon Kodzis thought they had their anxiety under control until a routine doctor appointment. Part 2: Naturally anxious neuroscientist Tammy Spence becomes preoccupied with her dog's health. Devon Kodzis has been called a joyful bumblebee. They have had job titles including animal trainer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, educator, and currently serve as the Dean of the Academic Incubator at Dallas College. They always have goggle-marks from swimming. Their passions include reading horror novels, hiking, and shouting at the television with their cats. Devon began storytelling at Dallas Comedy House in 2016 and have since produced and been featured in shows such as Gettin It', Truth in Comedy, Story Collider, Talking Dirty After Dark and Backyard Story Night. They have taught storytelling since 2017 and have had students living on every continent except for Antarctica. Tamara “Tammy” Spence is a neuroscientist and professional worrywart, earning a PhD in worry – for real. She would do almost anything in the name of science and education – including authorizing an entire class of medical students to observe an invasive procedure on herself that she could not bear to witness. Known as the “Brain Lady” for bringing buckets of preserved human brains to elementary schools as part of a Brain Awareness Campaign, she loves illuminating minds…one brain at a time. A proud aunt, she relishes the fact that her nephew considers Mr. Axon – his plush neuron – to be worthy of show and tell at his preschool. Learn more about your ad choices. This week on Yes But Why, I chatted with podcaster, Chris Green. Known as “Toph” in his role of host/producer for multiple podcasts, Chris Green builds each podcasting project until it inspires another. “My podcast projects are basically a set of Russian nesting dolls,” he said to me. Toph started by creating Gravity Beard, a successful podcast variety show that featured lots of different segments. Some turned into other projects like pop culture podcast, This Week Today and sports show, Armchair Radio. Other segments inspired Toph to do community building with his listeners. Gravity Beard Interns is a fun Facebook group, filled with fans of the show that get to contribute to future episodes of shows like Three Room Apartment. Then, there's Gravity Beard Inc, which is one of those fun roleplaying groups in which we all pretend we work at this startup called GBI. We have a good time. I connected with Toph first through these groups and then to his podcast and I think that says a lot about marketing efforts for podcasters. Toph not only creates lots of different podcasting projects (and organizes them and maintains them); he has also built a strong and supportive community from all over the world who come together for a good laugh in an uncertain world. When I asked Toph to send me a bio, he told me he was just a “low level comedy nerd,” but he is so much more than that. He finished the improv curriculum at Dallas Comedy House just as the pandemic hit so he took his comedy training online like we all did. But he didn't just create content (though to be fair, Toph and team create a MOUNTAIN of content on a weekly basis); he is the leader of online communities, the organizer of fun photo/meme projects, the arbiter of hilarious arguments over the worst donut of all time. His work online kept so many of us feeling connected and normal when the world went wonky. And still, Toph is constantly making new projects all the time! In our conversation, we talk about confidence and how that can keep us distant from feeling good about our artistic accomplishments. Toph tells me about how a real estate slump and a documentary idea set the ball rolling for him to embrace his creative side. Toph tells me about his podcasting workflow and what it's like balancing his real estate job and his multiple podcasts with his house full of kids. On this episode of Game Day Routine, I'm talking to one of my good friends (and fellow Dallas Comedy House graduate), the ATX Concert Queen: Clarissa Cardenas. Clarissa is a digital creator and "source for need-to-know Concerts & Events in ATX + beyond." Before she was making waves in the Austin concert scene, Clarissa was dubbed C-Murda while playing basketball for Spring Hill College in Alabama. During her collegiate career, Clarissa shared her passion for music by creating warm-up CDs for her team and creating mixes for fellow students. Some things never change, and for Clarissa, that is being the go-to plug for music and the passion she has for it. So what skills and routines did she pick up along the journey? To keep going, be true to yourself, and never settle. To hear even more from Clarissa, head to her Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbNiyZMWKbK2pH4J2rdj69Q And check out her Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/atxconcertqueen/ Of course, you can always find me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/robhowe21/
Amanda Austin's story is proof that class clowns do get ahead (yes, you can tell your mom you told her so). As a child, Amanda had the unique combination of both natural born entrepreneur and innate entertainer- starting her first business by the age of 11. Over the years, her love of connecting with people and a study of comedy led her to found the Dallas Comedy House, an iconic improv and comedy club and one of the first in the DFW Metroplex. Over the course of 12 years, DCH would become a haven to burgeoning comedians, kids trying improv for the first time, and corporate executives working on better stage presence. For many, DCH was home. After successfully expanding both the size and scope of what DCH offered, Amanda was confronted with a stark reality as COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the country, ultimately canceling her annual comedy festival and decimating her business...just weeks after moving into her brand new facility. Amanda's story is one of continued resilience- amidst trying landlords, public support, and private growth, Amanda has stayed dedicated to making connections count with those she works alongside and serves each day. Our time with Amanda was hilarious (obvi), encouraging, and a reminder that setbacks from big dreams will happen, what you do with the time after is what makes the greatest impact for your (and others') future. This week's episode is a little different. With the Dallas Comedy House closing its doors permanently on Friday, Al wanted to share the final thing he was able to do under the DCH umbrella. So, we are sharing the FIRST official recording of our show that was created as the "final" for their Intro to Podcasting class. It's short and it has rough edges (That's what she said lol), but it helped kickstart The WYP to what it is today.
You are going to LOVE Amanda Austin. She's the CEO of Dallas Comedy House, where so many have learned improv, stand-up, sketch, and writing. She's accidentally become the leader of her own cult. Amanda and I talk about how important it is to do the work, no matter what field you're in, and how you don't quit in the dip. I hope you enjoy. You’re yanked from your bed in the middle of the night. Your covers are thrown back, and someone slaps you in the face. You hear whispers in your ear that you should rethink your life choices. Then, someone punches your dad. Is this the worst houseguest ever or is something much more sinister at work?
A young jet setting couple sets out on the trip of a lifetime. Two world travelers ready to face adventure. But what they faced was something much more sinister. A nation was on edge as two violent killers evaded capture....until now.
Josh Edwards is a comedian in the DFW area, who is the funniest person we've ever interviewed... You can find him at the Dallas Comedy House in uptown!
