Kyp Malone is a musician and visual artist best known as the guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter of the band TV on the Radio. In the late 1990s, Malone moved to New York City and became involved in the music scene. He formed TV on the Radio with his friends Tunde Adebimbe and Dave Sitek in 2001. The band quickly gained a following for their unique blend of rock, soul, and electronic music. Kyp has also released solo music under the name Rain Machine and has collaborated with other artists. In addition to his musical pursuits, Malone is an accomplished visual artist, and his work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with David Poe. His highly-anticipated new album Everyone's Got A Camera arrives September 23rd, 2022 on ECR Music Group. Its powerful third single, “Analog” is out now. More sonically adventurous than his previous album, Poe's latest begins and ends with straightforward songs for a world in reckoning. This third single follows on a wave of critical and commercial success for the artist. Rolling Stone writes, “David Poe gives the singer-songwriter genre a much-needed jolt.” Poe has toured the world with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Tori Amos, The Jayhawks, and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze. A composer fellow of the Sundance Institute, his work features in numerous film, TV, dance and theater projects, official selections of the Sundance Film Festival, and commercials for humanitarian projects like the Malala Fund and the You Mean The World Foundation. His songs have been performed by a wide array of artists, including Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, C.C. White, Thomas Dybdahl and the cast of ABC's Nashville, and recorded by producers including T-Bone Burnett, Larry Klein, Buddy Miller, and Dave Sitek. He has also produced recordings for other artists, including Regina Spektor and Kraig Jarret Johnson. Shadowland, a collaboration with contemporary dance company Pilobolus, toured for a decade and was performed on five continents, for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and was released as a feature film. In an era of pop music that tends to either turn away from big concerns or focus on small ones, David Poe's Everyone's Got A Camera feels both new and old, as surprising as it is inevitable: a musical treatise for an age in flux that is as daring as it is profound. From 1960s-tinged rock & roll to quasi-trap, with nods to the jazz-inflected folk and acoustic music for which he is best known, Poe's new songs take on the handoff between this century and the last, surveillance culture and the ongoing battle between fact and opinion with a plain-spoken philosopher's wit. Transplanted from the American Midwest to New York City, David Poe served as the sound engineer at CBGB's 313 Gallery before signing with Sony/Epic. He currently lives in Los Angeles. Sherry and David chat about his new single “Analog”, his forthcoming album ‘Everyone's Got A Camera', and much more! Check out davidpoe.com for more information.
Raine Maida, leader of the band Our Lady Peace, joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Spiritual Machines 2, the sequel to the band's 2000 album of the same name. The Canadian songwriter first takes us back to the original LP and how OLP linked up with futurist Ray Kurzweil, who happens to appear on both Spiritual Machine and Spiritual Machines 2. Maida talks about all of the predictions Kurzweil made that have since come true, and the band's plans to have him appear in their upcoming live shows holographically. Maida then dives into how the new songs speak directly to the tracks from 20 years ago, the new predictions for the future, his thoughts on Simulation and Singularity, working with TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek and also having founding guitarist Mike Turner back to guest on the record. Listen to Raine Maida discuss Our Lady Peace's Spiritual Machines 2 and more now, and then make sure to like and subscribe to Kyle Meredith With… wherever you get your podcasts. We had the pleasure of interviewing Our Lady Peace over Zoom video! Our Lady Peace released their upbeat, tecnicolor groove track “Future Disease,” the second single off their upcoming album ‘Spiritual Machines II' which will drop on January 28th. Blending catchy rhythms, guitars, and bass, this 80's inspired alt-pop reflection represents all things Our Lady Peace - addressing the future, having humility, and the importance of healing as a society and the journey that comes with it. This follows their recent US “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” tour announcement where they will be hitting cities like NYC, LA, Boston, Detroit, etc in November. Full dates below.“Future Disease is the bridge between Spiritual Machines & Spiritual Machines II. This song echoes some of the sonic flavors & production techniques from the original album. It gives us comfort to have a track that ties the two albums together.” - Raine MaidaEarlier this fall, Our Lady Peace announced the sequel to their critically acclaimed 2000's album ‘Spiritual Machines', a record which has become a pillar of late 90s alt rock and a prime example of their band's creative brilliance. ‘Spiritual Machines II' will serve as the answer to their 2000 LP which was influenced by inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil's book “The Age Of The Spiritual Machines.” ‘ Spiritual Machines II' is the anti-rock record Our Lady Peace fans have been waiting for. Produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek (with additional production by Jason Lader on three tracks), the album features the return of Kurzweil with new predictions such as near-future with UBI (Universal Basic Income), AI that will pass the Turing Test by 2029, and sustainable solutions to ending global hunger and poverty. ‘Spiritual Machines II' marks an uplifting new chapter for OLP as it carves out a new genre that is best described as future rock with each song crafted to represent the new predictions for our future as a society. Last summer, Our Lady Peace released the first track off the forthcoming album, “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” featuring Pussy Riot with a video to pair. The track is a reflection on celebrity influencer culture and how it has weakened the fibers of society. The choreography-ladened video uniquely contrasts the tongue-in-cheek nature of the song with carefree and colorful visuals, highlighting young activists and leaders that society should actually be making famous. They also introduced their Future Famous program, which recognizes a wide range of exceptional people in different fields (science, environmentalism, music, art, etc) who are making a real difference in the world. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Pell over Zoom video! New Orleans rapper Pell announces glbl wrmng vol. 1 — a new conceptual project out February 19th. GLBL WRMG is a new NOLA-centric collective launched by Pell and music professional Nate “Suave” Cameron of 20+ local artists and producers including Malik NinetyFive, Jzzle, Jelly of Tank and the Bangas, Lil Iceberg, Kr3wcial, and more. glbl wrmng vol. 1 is an ode to the strength and resilience of their beloved hometown and emphasizes the city’s heroic survival.“I wanted to make records with all my hometown friends that didn’t have to be just Pell records that could showcase the talent of New Orleans and what we had to offer,”Pell says.“I wanted to executively produce this record and then give us all something to call back on whenever we were on the road or outside of the city so that we could keep connecting and building together.”glbl wrmng vol. 1 aims to capture the beauty, vibrancy, and, most importantly, resiliency of New Orleans — a city that can attest to the harsh realities of climate change — while simultaneously showcasing the artists and producers who are reinventing (and heating up) the city’s sound. GLBL WRMNG will be rolling out community initiatives involving recycling and gardens to give back to their local neighborhoods throughout the year. The collective’s aptly titled debut “504” ft. Pell, Kr3wcial, and $leazy EZ is out today. The vibrant video is picture-perfect New Orleans and pays homage to local producer Niyo Davinci who passed away last year. An eclectic cast of characters dancing amidst beautifully colorful backdrops, the visual flaunts jovial, big band maximalism. As part of the “504” YouTube premiere, proceeds of the streaming will go toward Concerned Citizens of St. John Parish, a non-profit organization 30 minutes outside of New Orleans. The town has the third-highest COVID -19 death rate in the nation (among other shocking statistics) and the nonprofit's mission is to raise awareness about the high levels of Chloroprene in the atmosphere while providing solutions for the poor air quality.About PellGrowth is ingrained in Pell's nature. Since taking the industry by storm in 2014, the electric New Orleans native, born Jared Pellerin, has continued to expand his sound and musicality. His stellar Floating While Dreaming debut garnered attention and praise from press across the board, including FADER, Billboard, XXL, Complex, among others.. After touring with G-Eazy, in 2015 he released LIMBO, an EP produced by TV on The Radio’s Dave Sitek, developing his "experimental soul" sound to set him apart from his peers. Pell released his next EP, girasoul (4.5 million streams to date) via Payday Records in December 2017. The project featured collaborations from Saba, Imad Royal, and Vérité. Later in 2019, Pell released his second full-length album "Gravity," an ode to his hometown of New Orleans, featuring performances by PJ Morton, VÉRITÉ, Ambré, and Malik Ninety Five. The album documents his growth and pulls inspiration from different life transitions such as heartbreak and longing. Pell has toured with Kehlani, PJ Morton, Doja Cat, Brasstracks, Tory Lanez, and has performed at prestigious festivals like Hangout, Firefly, Pemberton. We want to hear from you! We’re talking to Grammy award winning producer/musician Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beady Eye, Kelis, Beyoncé & Jay Z, and the list goes on...) about cats, taking risks —and LSD, and much more.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Model Child over Zoom video!Model Child is the project of LA-based songwriter and musician Danny Parker. Best known for writing songs for some of the most successful pop radio artists of this era (Britney Spears, Shawn Mendes, Nick Jonas, Jessie Ware and more) as well as working with acclaimed indie acts Surfbort, Claud, Hatchie, and Dave Sitek.Drawing on influences like Le Tigre, of Montreal, and The Prodigy, Parker fuses in-your-face punk sensibilities with razor-sharp pop craftsmanship to create raw, honest, and darkly playful dance-punk anthems.Growing up in Northern Virginia, Parker split his time between friends’ garage bands and the school marching band, developing an eclectic taste for both wild DIY jams and tight theatrical productions -- dueling elements on full display at Model Child’s rousing live shows, which feature costumes, props, and thrilling onstage antics. This energy permeates Parker’s music, which showcases his cutting sense of humor as he turns private experiences into political commentary.Dropout marks the first time audiences will get an in-depth study of the true artist behind the pen. An artful, aggressive, and accessible collection of smartly crafted and catchy-as-hell guitar jams, Model Child is what happens when a punk who knows his way around a pop song seizes the chance to return to his artistic roots to tell his unique story, all while taking on the absurd conventions of these times in his emphatic own way.We want to hear from you! In May, musician/producer Dave Sitek, of Brooklyn (TV on the Radio) and Sweden born/Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer Daniel Ledisnky created the new group The Neverly Boys. And the music is absolutely fantastic. When I learned Daniel was a whiskey fan, I knew I had to get him for the show. We taste: Redbreast 12 year, Weller Antique, Johnnie Walker Green Label, McKenzie New York Bourbon and Rare Breed. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
THE NEVERLY BOYS - "Never Come Down" from the 2020 self-released album Dark Side of Everything. THE NEVERLY BOYS finds Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio teaming up with Swedish singer/songwriter Daniel Ledinsky to explore "the unknown, the magic, the heartbreaks, and the aspirations," as they put it, on their debut album Dark Side of Everything. (The two teamed up previously to co-write songs for Blondie, Pussy Riot, and TV on the Radio.) “I’m not really good at personalizing it. We just tell stories, but I think you can find a song on this record, no matter who you are or what you’re going through. Some might not speak to you at the moment, but there is a wide range of emotion,” Sitek toldAmerican Songwriter. “We were trying not to conceal doubt or vulnerability. There’s been a lot of emphasis in modern music on escapism and things are better than they seem.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate
In this episode, John catches up with Grouplove’s Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi along with legendary producer Dave Sitek to breakdown how they wrote, recorded and produced the band’s latest album Healer. As their first record with an outside producer, the band reflect on their creative flow, pulling apart tracks bit by bit and showing us how Dave was the perfect weirdo to bring the album together. From jamming out five-hour demos at Hannah’s parent’s house to spending over a month recording from 9pm through to 11am, fuelled by cookies with cream cheese, breakfast burritos and copious amounts of weed. We hear theories on how people’s souls enter your body to give you songs, why Dave has been the cause of multiple people’s synth addictions, and we are treated to unheard midnight vocal takes recorded just before Hannah’s vocal surgery. Tracks discussed: Deleter, Expectations, Places
Merry Crimble one and all! Yo ho ho and so forth as we smoke some peace at Dave's house. I hope you are all enjoying some down time and it's good hang. If not I call this one the escape pod so hopefully you can relax a little as we get into our hearty end of year ramblathon. Dave is a legitimate legend at this point. His work speaks for itself. He's produced some heavy shit in his time. TV on the radio anyone? Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beyonce, Weezer... Liars. The list goes on and on and it's all crazy and plenty magic. At one point Mr Sitek is chatting about the Jefferson starship guitarist. so here's a Jorma_Kaukonen link :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorma_Kaukonen We get into a lengthy one about the power of boredom, the inevitable struggles with loneliness in 2019/2020 and many a juicy topic. In the nitty I make EVERYTHING sleigh. Yep. That's right. Kind sponsorship comes from Dave's fave monitor folk ADAM AUDIO. makers of rather fine speakers. Dave has 2 pairs. They are banging.
Hello ! Greetings from the SONIC RANCH in El Paso! Woe. I'm in another world right now Massive thanks to Dave Sitek for inviting me out into space. I'm blown away. The people here are so great and the studios are just absolutely bonkers. Most importantly it's a totally secluded zone. The head expands. Almost as many cats as people and WAY more pecan trees! Ha Welcome to Episode 49. I met this Frank (Bink Beats) when we did a show together in Amsterdam recently. I was sitting in with him on a couple of songs. Side note : one of the numbers we did is a new track that I hope finds the light of day! We had a pretty hectic day of practice in the venue followed by show but nevertheless we snuck in a quick chat. Frank is a serious badass. A player of a million objects and a hell of a signer to boot. Great to have him on :) In the nitty I explore the sonic ranch's amps a little and send all sorts of stuff into speakers. Some shall be spinning and some just spaced and weird. Check it! Music for EP 49 comes from Evan Geesman. Good stuff! https://evangeesman.bandcamp.com/album/mattress-money

I was trying to spin some impromptu similes off the top of my domescape and not all of them were good, but you gotta practise somehow, right? I realise I also didn't finish my projector tale - a cliffhanger to be resolved another time. Also I don't think I've ever said 'like' more? You can tell how little I have socialised in the last few months. Re: my hot bod point, I know there are other factors that go into play with being able to work towards a 'hot bod', not well articulated, mostly ignore that. Also, of course I do more than what I said for my job, but I'm just very antsy right now. Mentions: Silvia Perez Cruz, Dave Sitek, David Kosten, Tony Buchen, James Acaster.
Kirsten Collins began working with Grammy producers and writers in the beginning of her teen years. Her potential for stardom was evident early on as she was singing on key when she was less than 2 years old. She sang her first solo at age 5 and wrote her first song at 6. At the age of 9 was fronting adult bands at professional events. She then went on to win Calgary Junior Idol when she was 10. She was later named Miss Teen Calgary - World in 2012 and also competed in the Miss Teen Canada - World pageant. As an actress, she had a major role in the 2009 film Rust, which featured her original song "Could You Imagine." She is featured on the MC Mario single "Anti-Gravity" and has received several offers from music labels, movie producers and has been featured in international publications but has decided to remain independent. David Poe has toured the world with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The Jayhawks, Chris Whitley, Glenn Tilbrook and Tori Amos. His songs have been recorded by producers including T-Bone Burnett, Larry Klein, Buddy Miller and Dave Sitek, and performed by Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, C.C. White, Thomas Dybdahl and the cast of Nashville. His solo recordings include his most recent release God & The Girl, a self-titled debut produced by T-Bone Burnett, The Late Album on Sony/Epic records, Love Is Red on Universal Music/The Lab, two live recordings and much, much more. Not bad for a sound engineer from the Midwest transplanted to Los Angeles by way of New York City.
In 2000, Tunde Adebimpe and Dave Sitek formed TV on the Radio, one of the most creative, inspired and influential bands of their era. Fifteen years, five albums and a whole lot of ups and downs later, they've still managed to preserve that energy and vision. Which is pretty remarkable. Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Nielson has also sustained a very long creative streak. He'd played guitar in a hard-edged New Zealand post-hardcore band called the Mint Chicks, and when that ended, he found himself in Portland, Oregon, around 2010. He began messing around with music again — making highly wrought, idiosyncratic basement recordings with an odd psychedelic feel. This new project — Unknown Mortal Orchestra — got a record deal, and Nielson began touring and gathering crowds and critical praise. The UMO sound has broadened and morphed over the course of three albums, right through this year's release, the acclaimed and addictively strange Multi-Love. In retrospect, it's no surprise that Adebimpe and Nielson are huge fans of each other's music — they have a similar creative spirit — and they have lots of other things in common too, as you're about to hear. But, aside from the Mint Chicks opening for TV on the Radio many years ago, they'd never really met. What a great excuse to put them together and see what they talk about. And the answer is: a whole lot of very interesting things, like, when you write a song that comes from a deep emotional place, how do you find it in yourself to sing that song on stage, night after night — and sometimes for year after year? Where does inspiration come from? What does success do to creativity? And there's a lot more where that came from. Give a listen.
In this Bonus Mini-Episode, Brian Chase talks about the influence of producer and longtime collaborator, Dave Sitek. Warning: This gets pretty nerdy!
