This is an obvious Trojan horse to bring in digital IDs and transhumanism. Elon Musk's Neuralink is being branded as a savior to those with disabilities, people who are quadriplegic or suffering from Parkinson's. At face value it sounds great, but this is just the veneer meant to create a climate of acceptance. The reality is, this will be forced into the brains of most dependent on the system. This is a brain chip attached to a Pentagon funded mesh network. Of course they have to market it as a miracle cure for all things. It keeps people sitting on their hands. Australia has already used similar brain chips in many test subjects and there have already been some major injuries. They want to control your mind and who else is better to market it than the mainstream alternative media hero Elon Musk. The same guy who said AI will destroy humanity while he's the number one person developing it. He also claimed AI will destroy most jobs in the years to come, but don't worry, you can have UBI (Universal Basic Income) which will make you a complacent slave like the WEF wants you to be. He's recently been pushing carbon taxes. Another goal of the WEF. He is registering X as a bank while using the algorithm to rank or derank people based on what they say or believe. Essentially social credit. He just sold X for 33 billion dollars (yes 33) to XAI which will help create the framework for a digital ID. He bows to Israel which is using drones built with AI by Palantir to obliterate innocent children. He promoted the injections. He wants robots in your house and they'll be cheap! Of course! Great for surveillance. He has cars that will self drive you to a gulag! His grandfather was Joshua Haldeman who created the Technate Party to create a global government based in technocracy. He claims he's finishing the work his father started. But he says some "based things" sometimes so everyone will worship at his feet. He is the true Trojan Horse. Stop falling for it. This episode explores the economic implications of Trump's re-election, France's political deadlock under Macron, and the future of global capitalism. Jean-Baptiste Wautier, a private equity investor and World Economic Forum speaker, shares insights on trade wars and deficits. He argues that short-term profit motives undermine the global capitalist system. Jean-Baptiste also discusses AI's transformative potential. Please note this episode was recorded on 11 December 2024, before French President Macron appointed François Bayrou as the new PM.  If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Gene, please email him at contact@economicsexplored.com.Timestamps for EP266Introduction (0:00)Economic Implications of Trump's Re-Election (2:55)Potential Global Trade War (5:50)Global Trade and Economic Interdependence (8:29)Challenges Facing France and the Fifth Republic (13:55)Risks to the Eurozone (20:07)Flaws in Global Capitalism and Potential Solutions (27:34)Examples of Enlightened Capitalism (33:01)The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Jobs (39:59)Final Thoughts and Future Directions (44:50)TakeawaysTrump's Second Term Risks: His proposed tax cuts and tariffs could reignite inflation and exacerbate the US federal deficit, leading to global economic consequences.France's Political Instability: Macron's government faces gridlock, which could potentially destabilize the Eurozone due to France's growing budget deficit and political deadlock.Global Trade War Unlikely: Despite harsh rhetoric, economic interdependence makes a full-scale global trade war improbable, in Jean-Baptiste's view.Capitalism's Short-Term Focus: Jean-Baptiste argues the current capitalist model prioritizes short-term profits over long-term sustainability, causing inefficiencies and negative externalities like mental health crises and economic inequality. The Role of AI: AI is transforming industries at an unprecedented speed, raising concerns about job displacement and the need for economic adjustments, possibly extending to UBI (Universal Basic Income), depending on the scale of the displacement.Links relevant to the conversationJean-Baptiste Wautier's website:https://wautier.co.uk/EXPLAINER: Why is natural gas still flowing from Russia to Europe across Ukraine?https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-natural-gas-f9f00df7195d01404f8cb2a43152a8b1Lumo Coffee promotion10% of Lumo Coffee's Seriously Healthy Organic Coffee.Website: https://www.lumocoffee.com/10EXPLOREDPromo code: 10EXPLORED Full transcripts are available a few days after the episode is first published at www.economicsexplored.com.

In this episode of the DeFi Download, Piers Ridyard interviews Friederike Ernst, co-founder of Gnosis and Gnosis Pay. They cover Gnosis's evolution from foundational blockchain infrastructure like Gnosis Safe and CoW Swap, to user-friendly apps such as Metri and Gnosis Pay. They also discuss blockchain's potential to transform financial infrastructure with projects such as Circles, a blockchain-based UBI protocol. SummaryIn this episode of the DeFi Download, Piers Ridyard is joined by Friederike Ernst, the co-founder of Gnosis and Gnosis Pay. Gnosis is a group of projects centred around the Gnosis token, with a mission to bring all financial rails on-chain. They started with the highly successful Gnosis Safe, a multi-signature wallet that has now been spun out as Safe, securing over $100 billion in crypto assets. Additionally, their decentralized exchange, CoW Swap, has achieved a remarkable total volume of $45 billion. Friederike shares insights into these groundbreaking projects and discusses the future of decentralized finance. A physicist by training, she talks about the programmability of Ethereum that drew her into crypto technology, what prompted her to co-found Gnosis, and the strategies her team applies to expand distribution and adoption of their product and network.Key takeawaysGnosis was founded to create decentralized payment solutions and other infrastructure that provide tangible value and improve user applications within the Web3 ecosystem.Gnosis initially focused on developing internal-driven products such as Gnosis Safe, CoW Swap, MEV Blocker, and Gnosis Guild, building foundational blockchain infrastructure. They subsequently shifted to creating user-friendly applications like Metri and Gnosis Pay, aiming to offer a neobank-like experience to a wide audience new to blockchain.Blockchain technology can revolutionize financial infrastructure by cutting intermediaries, lowering costs, and improving access, similarly to how VoIP transformed telecommunications.Gnosis is a veteran in blockchain infrastructure with a strong emphasis on decentralization and scalability. Gnosis Chain, a decentralized Ethereum sister protocol boasting over 200,000 validators, offers robust security and scalability advantages over Ethereum's Layer 2 solutions, making it a promising choice for future-proof financial applications.Circles is a blockchain-based UBI (Universal Basic Income) protocol operating on a decentralized web of trust. It combines Bitcoin's algorithmic money issuance with a focus on equitable distribution, unlike Bitcoin's concentration among a minority of the global population, which would exacerbate inequality if widely adopted today. Circles, in contrast, empowers local economies and fosters community-driven adoption over time.Chapters01:27 Friederike's journey from doctorate to DeFi05:14 From prediction markets to multi-sig wallets08:27 Keys to successful product development13:34 Building products, from MVP to customer delight15:41 Beyond a neobank-like experience24:01 How Gnosis could leapfrog financial infrastructure28:32 Towards a decentralized financial future30:04 Ensuring global distribution of Metri35:56 Introduction to Circles36:44 The drive behind Bitcoin and the case for UBI39:20 The Impact of Circles45:43 Key takeaways and finding more about GnosisFurther resourcesWebsite: gnosis.io Twitter: @gnosischain Discord: discord.gg/xW3X5EreBM

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.houseofstrauss.comMichael Moynihan is one of my favorite podcasters. I always enjoy him at his Fifth Column home and, of course, when he visits HoS. The genesis of this pod is Michael's 2018 Vice interview with Open AI CEO Sam Altman, which was on the topic of UBI (Universal Basic Income). To give a sense of how the interview went, here's Moynihan's recent Instagram description of the exchange, posted in the aftermath of Altman's firing (and before his rehiring): So OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired. This is apparently news requiring a New York Times homepage takeover, with three (!) stories speculating about the reason for his ouster. Allow me to offer an alternate theory: Altman was fired because he's an insufferable asshole. I interviewed him back in 2018…one of the most pompous, absurd, unpleasant people I've ever spoken to on camera. You see, Altman suffers from that most common Silicon Valley delusion…the one convincing billionaires that because they are very clever with computer code, they can also solve the world's most vexing social problems. Altman is a proponent of universal basic income and believes that when jobs are automated away, a more socialist government can make it all better with UBI-like transfer payments to the newly unemployed. I gently pushed back on this idea. He didn't handle it well. Here are two clips from the tail end of my interview with Altman. So that's our jumping off point to questions about the damage well meaning utopians can cause, whether AI will replace journalists, and, obviously: Would people prefer AI Sports Illustrated writers or AI Sports Illustrated swimsuit models? Also we get into an Israel/Gaza detour and address whether the culture war has ended. Great talk, hope you enjoy.

It seems almost ridiculously simple: when donors give money directly to recipients, poverty goes down.  Michael Faye, co-founder of GiveDirectly and Segovia, and CEO of Taptap Send, came to this “cash works” realization in the early 2000s. Michael was working on his PhD in Business Economics at Harvard University, evaluating ways to help bring about the end of extreme poverty.  Once it became apparent that cash in the hands of recipients worked as well or better than any other intervention for relieving poverty, Michael shifted focus to finding ways to make it simple for donors to give and recipients to receive. Many of us in the west balk at handing over cash without some middle organization vetting how the money is spent; we've heard too many stories of recipients using the money for drugs or alcohol or other wants we might find objectionable or frivolous. In fact, numerous randomized controlled studies demonstrate the opposite impact of direct cash transfers. Michael sys the data reflects the fact that the recipients generally use the money to feed their families, invest in businesses, upgrade their living conditions, and so on.  In this episode, Michael and host Charlie Bresler talk about the ripple effects of financial stability in small communities, the notion of UBI (Universal Basic Income), the cultural challenges of convincing potential donors to give cash, and the technological challenges of getting cash in the hands of recipients. Find out more about Michael Faye and learn about (and donate to!) GiveDirectly at givedirectly.org.  Musings on Ourselves and Other Strangers is the podcast for the non-profit organization The Life You Can Save, and is hosted by co-founder Charlie Bresler. Whether you want to call it Agenda21, Agenda47, Agenda 2030, or "Freedom City" they are high tech implementations of the Indian Reservations of the 19th Century. Here's what they're doing in Dallas… (2:07) EU & USA open their borders, then use chaos to require legal tourists to get visas. EU will require Americans to get visas for travel, and vice versa. They're ramping up the permission-society (23:43) Shoplifter get a whooping from store employees. So the city of Stockton comes after store employees protecting themselves from shoplifter (28:59) Letters from listeners (31:51)Billionaires and the OccultTranshumanism, UFOs, poltergeist, cyborgs, AI, brain-computer interfaces, UBI (Universal Basic Income), etc — what do these billionaires who manipulate our society and elections want? (44:35) Biden's 2nd attempt at buying voters with student loan forgiveness shut down by court (54:54) Company given $700 MILLION by Trump goes into bankruptcy (1:02:35) Musk gets $280 MILLION for brain-computer interface (BCI) research. Why is he a hero to conservatives? Speech. And he says he's going to fund lawsuits against employers who fired workers over their twitter history. Hasn't got his BIC yet, but he's already in our heads (1:05:38) Trump and DOJ in a "Hegelian Two-Step" DanceIs this election a professional wrestling narrative, a Hegelian dance of death for America? Trump has his own plans, not just for SMART Cities (his so-called "Freedom Cities") on federal land, but also MORE SUBSIDIES for BigPharma, another part of his "Agenda47" (1:16:38) Do you find it suspicious that BOTH the Mayor and Police Commissioner of NYC on 9/11, who BOTH participated in the 9/11 cover-up — BOTH worked with Trump to "investigate" the 2020 election. What will Humans do without Jobs/Labor? Will they become useless? Or will the flourish with unlimited time to follow their passions and work of fulfilling their desires?  A solution to a Jobless Society is being debated by the powers that be. This week we will discuss 2 solutions they have proposed to quell the effects of a World in which Human Labor is no longer required.  1 Solutions is UBI aka Universal Basic Income. We discussed this before a few years ago. UBI will work sort of like the Public Assistance system we have in place today. Everyone will receive a check (Digital Currency) for a specified amount to compensate for a Jobless Society. Sounds crazy but think the Stimulus program and PPP Loans they rolled out during Covid when people who were unable to work recieved weekly Monetary Assistance.

In the last few weeks, the pace of change in AI has been faster than ever before. The changes aren't just announcements of future capabilities - announcements that could have been viewed, perhaps, as hype. The changes are new versions of AI systems that are available for users around the world to experiment with, directly, here and now. These systems are being released by multiple different companies, and also by open-source collaborations. And users of these systems are frequently expressing surprise: the systems are by no means perfect, but they regularly out-perform previous expectations, sometimes in astonishing ways.In this episode, Calum Chace and David Wood, the co-hosts of this podcast series, discuss the wider implications of these new AI systems. David asks Calum if he has changed any of his ideas about what he has called "the two singularities", namely the Economic Singularity and the Technological Singularity, as covered in a number of books he has written.Calum has been a full-time writer and speaker on the subject of AI since 2012. Earlier in his life, he studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford University, and trained as a journalist at the BBC. He wrote a column in the Financial Times and nowadays is a regular contributor to Forbes magazine. In between, he held a number of roles in business, including leading a media practice at KPMG. In the last few days, he has been taking a close look at GPT-4.Selected follow-up reading:https://calumchace.com/the-economic-singularity/https://calumchace.com/surviving-ai-synopsis/Topics in this conversation include:*) Is the media excitement about GPT-4 and its predecessor ChatGPT overblown, or are these systems signs of truly important disruptions?*) How do these new AI systems compare with earlier AIs?*) The two "big bangs" in AI history*) How transformers work*) The difference between self-supervised learning and supervised learning*) The significance of OpenAI enabling general public access to ChatGPT*) Market competition between Microsoft Bing and Google Search*) Unwholesome replies by Microsoft Sydney and Google Bard - and the intended role of RLHF (Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback)*) How basic reasoning seems to emerge (unexpectedly) from pattern recognition at sufficient scale*) Examples of how the jobs of knowledge workers are being changed by GPT-4*) What will happen to departments where each human knowledge workers has a tenfold productivity boost?*) From the job churns of the past to the Great Churn of the near future*) The forthcoming wave of automation is not only more general than past waves, but will also proceed at a much faster pace*) Improvements in the writing AI produces, such as book chapters*) Revisions of timelines for the Economic and Technological Singularity?*) It now seems that human intelligence is less hard to replicate than was previously thought*) The Technological Singularity might arrive before an Economic Singularity*) The liberating vision of people no longer needing to be wage slaves, and the threat of almost everyone living in poverty*) The insufficiency of UBI (Universal Basic Income) unless an economy of abundance is achieved (bringing the costs of goods and services down toward zero)*) Is the creation of AI now out of control, with a rush to release new versions?*) The infeasibility of the idea of AGI relinquishment*) OpenAI's recent actions assessed*) Expectations for new AI releases in the remainder of 2023: accelerating paceMusic: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain Declaration

A fascinating opinion piece in the NZ Herald penned by Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Auckland Tim Hazledine where he reveals his wish that New Zealand adopt a UBI – Universal Basic Income. He's suggesting 'a grand in the hand' a month. Everyone would get it, no targeting, no administrative fuss. It would not be enough to live comfortably on, but it would provides insurance against sudden misfortune, a start for savings and fund enterprise. Tim reckons our current spending on welfare would be plenty to fund a tax-free UBI of $1000 for every single adult New Zealand resident. Tim Hazledine joined Simon Barnett & James Daniels on the show. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

0:00 -- Intro.1:30 -- Start of interview.3:32 -- Santi's "origin story". He was  born and grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. "The year 1983 was a symbolic year in Argentina because it's the year that democracy came back to the country." "My generation was tainted by two events: the hyperinflation of 1989 and the collapse of 2001 (peso devaluation and bank deposit freezes)."5:11 -- Argentina's strange political case. 7:24 -- Santi's professional background going from gaming, to founding "Partido de la Red" (the "Net Party") in 2012 - a political party in Argentina (inspired by Giorgio Jackson), and his pivot to crypto.14:04 -- His endeavors with Democracy Earth Foundation and UBI (Universal Basic Income through the Ethereum blockchain). The impact of Bitcoin and the new generation of builders in Argentina, with global leaders such as Decentraland. The strong adoption of crypto in countries like Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba: "There is a real need for crypto in countries that need an alternative."16:12  -- The connection of crypto with corporate governance. His interest on voting "we realized that whoever controls the registry of voters can decide the outcome of elections." The concept of Proof of Humanity ("the protocol got activated in March 2021 and it has had 50 proposals since then." How voting works in this DAO. "You see how contested the positions are to the extent of how people are willing to cheat in order to win." 23:19 -- Explaining DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations). Different DAO applications. Token voting. On The DAO hack (2016).25:59 -- On the evolution of DAOs. On Vitalik Buterin (co-founder of Ethereum): "I think he's today's most inspiring leader in technology, by far. In the same rank as Elon Musk, and many other great ones." "A lot of the [crypto] community looks up to him as a role model who really understands what it means to lead through the process of creation of a decentralized network." "It's a very counter-intuitive exercise in leadership because you actually need to reject being in control, in order to gain legitimacy." "The role that founders play in these networks I think is a determinant factor in the outcome of how projects evolve over time." "Nothing ever begins decentralized, it needs to be progressively decentralized throughout time." "Building institutionality in cyberspace I think has tremendous power for coordination of humans and capital in a global, more legitimate way."28:46 -- On the role of founders, contrast between 'traditional' founder-controlled startups and new decentralized crypto projects. On Vitalik's founder's take in a reply to Balaji Sirinivasan's book the Network State. Santi has personally dealt with some of these founder debates, he's currently a Mission Board Member at Proof of Humanity, elected by the community.32:32 -- On the contrast of "corporate governance" and "crypto or DAO governance". "One of the most interesting projects in the space right now, I think is a project called Kleros, a decentralized arbitration service for disputes of the new economy." "They work as oracles that bring into the blockchain human judgment, based on a drafted policy or guideline." This is very important for enforcement, and to audit the decision process. On-chain governance vs Off-chain governance. The cases of Aragon and Moloch DAO (founded by Ameen Soleimani). "In Proof of Humanity, we don't want voting to be on-chain, because it makes it expensive to vote. The purpose of voting is to be an alternative to economic incentives. So voting needs to happen off-chain for voting to remain free [and] a right." Snapshot as the off-chain voting mechanism. Kleros' Governor solution.42:18 -- On Proof of Humanity (~16,630 profiles), its DAO, and UBI. "Argentina and Brazil are two of the leading adopters of UBI right now." Proof of Integrity DAO (promoting technological inclusion).47:44 -- On the current "crypto crash", the cases of Terra/Luna, Celsius. "You can see the ripples of Terra going down throughout the industry, it led to the Celsius and 3AC collapse... you can see the dominoes falling in a very clear way."55:12 -- On the advantage of understanding how to code. I'm Crystal Fincher, and I'm a political consultant and your host. On this show, we talk with policy wonks and political hacks to gather insight into local politics and policy in Washington state through the lens of those doing the work with behind-the-scenes perspectives on what's happening, why it's happening, and what you can do about it. Full transcripts and resources referenced in the show are always available at officialhacksandwonks.com and in our episode notes. Well today, I am very excited to welcome to the program, Jeff Manson, who's a candidate for the 36th District State House seat. Welcome, Jeff. [00:00:49] Jeff Manson: It's great to be here, Crystal - thank you. [00:00:51] Crystal Fincher: It's great to be here, it's great to see you. We were in the IDF class of 2010 together. [00:00:59] Jeff Manson: Yes we were - 2010 forever. [00:01:01] Crystal Fincher: 2010 forever. So I'm thrilled to have you on here and to have this conversation, excited to see you again. So starting off, what made you choose to run? [00:01:12] Jeff Manson: Yeah - great question. So, I'm an administrative law judge with the state, I'm a labor leader, and a disability community advocate. As a state administrative law judge, we resolve disputes that people have with state government - so I see every day how underfunded government affects people, including the most vulnerable individuals in our state. So I'm running for State Representative to fund the services and infrastructure that we need and utilizing progressive revenue sources. I've been fighting for progressive values since the fourth grade, when I co-founded my elementary school's Earth Club after reading a book for kids on the environment - it was 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth and each page described an environmental problem and then what a kid could do about. And I did most of the things and it really taught me not only about environmental issues at a young age, but also that one person can make a difference - if you get off your butt and start doing stuff, you can make incremental differences and possibly take that to scale. So since then I've developed a track record of effecting progressive policy change. I was lucky to go to law school at Seattle University, where I did an emphasis in poverty and inequality law, and I represented people with disabilities as a young attorney. But I saw them struggle with our legal system - there's just a lot of systemic barriers, especially for people with disabilities to accessing justice. So I gathered legal and disability experts and people with disabilities, and we wrote a guide for judges on how to accommodate people in legal proceedings. And then, when I saw the negative effects of corporate and wealthy donations on our democracy, I became a leader with the group that brought the Democracy Voucher program to Seattle City elections. And it took about a decade - we had to change state law first, and then we tried to go to the ballot and decided not to, then we did go to the ballot and we failed, and then we went to the ballot again a couple of years later and were finally successful - and it's been a really successful program. And then in my own profession, our salaries were stagnating, we were having issues in our workplace. But we were not allowed as - even though we're state employees as administrative law judges - we were not allowed to collectively bargain for almost 40 years. So a few years ago I organized my colleagues and we successfully lobbied the Legislature - my own representative who I'm running to replace, Representative Noel Frame, sponsored the bill. And we successfully got collective bargaining rights for administrative law judges. And in the few weeks before COVID shut everything down, we got 85% of our judges to sign union authorization cards. So, and now we're unionized, we've got a contract, we got a salary increase, and last year I was elected as President of WFSE Local 562. So I'm a restless personality - always seeing problems and trying to fix them and pulling people together to fix them - and I can't wait to hopefully be elected so I can work for the people of the 36th doing the same stuff in the legislature. [00:04:33] Crystal Fincher: Yes, and it is exciting to have watched you do all of this over the years and get the opportunity to - see so many more people get the opportunity to see all of the work that you've done and how helpful that has been. You just mentioned COVID. Right now, we're still dealing with COVID, but trying to move forward with COVID - sometimes lurching forward prematurely in how we're dealing with COVID. And so it seems like - to a number of people still - there still needs to be more done to mitigate COVID. I was just - a friend just yesterday came down with COVID. Lots of talk about - hey, we have the tools to address this, we have therapeutics and Paxlovid - and she and others that I've known have had challenges even accessing that with COVID, in addition to testing and some of the financial mitigation things. Should we - should the Legislature be doing more to keep us safe from COVID, and if they should, what should be happening from the legislative point of view? [00:05:44] Jeff Manson: Yeah, it seems like two steps forward, one step back - or sometimes two steps forward, three steps back - depending on the season. It's been a long couple of years - I guess we're on 26 months now. And yeah, this isn't over. I don't know about you or the listeners, but it seems like more people that I know have caught it in the last few weeks than in the couple of years prior to that. And yeah, so it isn't over. Ideally this would be handled at the federal level, and I think the federal government has done some things right and some things not right. And our federal system, I think, makes it more difficult - when we first had the vaccines last year, I waited my turn until my category came up and then I went online to try to find a place, and it was just a mess to just find - it's like, can't you just tell me where to go. I'll drive to Yakima - I'll totally drive to Yakima if that's my assigned place - just tell me where to go instead of giving me 20 websites to click on, all of which say it's full. If the federal government had just taken it over, it may have run more smoothly, but we have this decentralized form of government in this country where the states were in charge and then they would turn it over to the counties. And I think we've seen some of the flaws in that system, especially when there's a crisis. I think federalism creates - we have the laboratories of democracy or whatnot - but in a crisis where you have emergencies declared and you need quick responses and top-down efficiency, that decentralized system doesn't work very well. So I think from the Legislature - what the Legislature can do - is still provide the resources that people need, who are not able to stop quarantining. In my job, we adjudicate unemployment benefits appeals, and that's most of what I'm doing right now - we still have a big backlog. And there's still lots of people who are not comfortable leaving their homes, either because of their own health situation, or that of someone else in their household, or of a parent they care for in another household, or because their child is under five years old. And it's one of the main reasons a lot of people aren't going back to work yet. And why we have a - we talk about supply chain issues, but we have a labor supply issue in almost every industry right now. And people aren't able to go back to work 'cause they don't feel safe doing it. So for those who can't, I think we need to continue some of the safety net programs that we had for a year, year and a half, but many of which have expired. And then beyond that, I think a lot of it is communication - there are free tests that - I bought a test at a grocery store, it was 20 bucks when it's like - oh, wait a minute, I could have ordered one of these if only I had known to go to this website and then do this and then do that. I think our state and our county health departments could help with that communication - that does require funding though, and the state provides a lot of that funding. [00:08:56] Crystal Fincher: All right. Well, you talk about what the Legislature has done here in our state. We just got done recently with a session where there are some things that happened that were great and other things that were pretty disappointing. What was your evaluation of this past session? What would you have done differently than our Legislature did? [00:09:19] Jeff Manson: Yeah, there were, like any session, there were highs and lows. Some of the high - we got a transportation package which was good. It wasn't a perfect transportation package, but it does fund a lot of really good things, including transit, bike, and pedestrian infrastructure. We got - for education, it's still just a - we haven't fully funded education in my mind yet, but we did take a step in the right direction. Teachers got a COLA [Cost-of-Living Adjustment], we got more funding for school counselors and nurses and social workers. But there were also some disappointments - there were some environmental bills that didn't pass. We had electric vehicle subsidies that didn't pass and there were some other environmental bills that we'll need to take up next year. And I think we have a housing crisis in the state - but in particular in Seattle, it's a regional housing market, but we see it acutely here in Seattle. And I think leaving housing decisions to the cities hasn't worked and there is a place for the state to step in. And I know Jessica Bateman, Representative Bateman, had a bill. There were a few different versions of it before it died, but I think we need to - I support the concept of the state directing changes in zoning and we should - that should be a priority next session. [00:10:49] Crystal Fincher: Should we be increasing zoning density in single-family neighborhoods? [00:10:53] Jeff Manson: I think in some of them - the devil will be in the details, but I think - we're at tens of thousands of housing units behind where we need to be. People are moving here and staying here faster than we're building housing units. And the result has been increased housing prices. We're seeing housing prices increase across the country the last year or so, but Seattle has been seeing this much longer than just the last year. And the result is that people are being priced out of the City or onto our streets. And so we need to - we need more housing stock. We need it - and of every type - we need more large apartment buildings in transit corridors, we need more duplexes and fourplexes. And the City of Seattle has taken some steps in recent years to add density, which I've supported - more ADUs [Accessory Dwelling Units], some up-zoning in urban villages. But a lot of cities elsewhere in the region haven't done the same, so I think state action is needed to prod that along. And ADUs and DADUs [Detached Accessory Dwelling Units] - I think that's great and for those who are able to afford to build one or renovate for one - it's wonderful. But the first year after that change, we saw an increase of about 300 ADU and DADU permits than the previous year. And 300 housing units - that's one large apartment complex, it's just a drop in the bucket. It's great, but we need to attack this from all angles, but it's just a drop in the bucket compared to the tens of thousands of units that we need over the next several years. [00:12:39] Crystal Fincher: Do you support the social housing initiative that is currently gathering signatures in the City of Seattle. And do you think that's an approach that could be taken statewide? [00:12:49] Jeff Manson: I'm very intrigued by it - I've not read the actual initiative, but I understand from what I've read, that it's a model that's been used in Europe, especially in Vienna. So I'm very intrigued by the idea and excited about the idea. I think we need to try as many things as we can and see what works. I need to see how it pencils out and what it looks like before I make a decision about whether I'll support it at the ballot or not, but I really like that we're having the conversation. And if it does look like it's a model that could work, then I think it should be expanded to the rest of the state. I do - we were talking about the market rate housing and supply and demand, which is a big part of housing affordability. But I really think that there is a significant - government should also be responsible for subsidizing and directly building housing units. We need both the free market and the commons to take responsibility for housing people - and whether that's traditional public housing, or Section 8, or subsidies - the government needs to be stepping up to the plate. And the state provides a lot of the funding for those - cities and counties make a lot of the micro-level decisions, but the state provides funding for the Housing Trust Fund. This last session, we put money in for about 2000 units of supportive housing, which is great - it may not be enough, but it's great. But we really need government being part of this market. There's the free market, but it should be - we should have a safety net of housing, just like we have a safety net of food assistance for low-income people and disability benefits for people. We need a housing benefit, so to speak, and government role in that space. [00:14:42] Crystal Fincher: And part of our housing problem, housing affordability problem, is one of the root causes of homelessness. And we are experiencing a crisis of homelessness. What are you proposing, that you can do as a legislator, to help make a tangible difference? [00:15:05] Jeff Manson: Yeah, and it really comes back to funding. There can be - there's some at the edges, we can tweak policies to help with homelessness, but really it's a funding issue. We need more funding for more housing options, and that's really at every level - that's emergency shelter, it's tiny homes, it's supportive housing as I mentioned, and it's other public housing that I mentioned. But we have an acute crisis right now, and we need to get people off of the streets and into some sort of shelter that is safer for them and safer for all of us. And then longer term, increasing our housing stock will reduce the root cause, which is evictions - a lot of people are homeless. They were not born homeless - most of them. They, at some point, lost their housing or lost their support system. So yeah, it's really about funding and our state government has been, I believe, chronically underfunded for decades. And really that gets back to our tax structure. We have the worst tax structure in the country, where the lowest-income people pay the most and the wealthiest pay the least, and it's completely upside down. So we need more progressive revenue sources to fund things like housing and everything else that we feel like we need as a society. [00:16:30] Crystal Fincher: There are currently about 30 cities across the country piloting some form of a guaranteed basic income program - a set amount of money each month targeted to low-income households just to help take care of basic needs. And with it showing results in everything from health outcomes, to educational outcomes, to public safety outcomes. Do you support a guaranteed basic income? [00:16:58] Jeff Manson: I love the idea and I think we should continue experimenting with it. And actually, I am in the public benefits arena where everything - a lot of things are means-tested - unemployment benefits aren't, it's an insurance program. But in my office, we adjudicate food assistance, TANF [Temporary Assistance for Needy Families], state disability benefits, Medicaid - and these are all means-tested programs. And maybe I'm going to get myself in trouble with my union because I'm going to propose putting us out of work. But what we do is try to figure out whether people qualify for these programs. Somebody will be getting - say, $182 per month in food assistance. And then they get a letter that reduces it from $182 to $165, so it's gone down $17 a month. They request a hearing, they come to the hearing. And so now we have this whole hearing about whether they should have their benefits reduced by $17, and then I issue a decision and then it's implemented. And this is all after the person shows up in a building, they fill out paperwork, they go to their doctor or they go to their landlord to get supporting documentation, a financial worker and sometimes a social worker with DSHS looks it up - so we've got all of this expense for the bureaucracy of determining how much this person should - just give everybody $200 per month of food assistance. Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, you, me, everybody - and is $200 the right amount? I don't know, but I think the concept of UBI [Universal Basic Income] has helped sort of change the conversation about this. There is so much bureaucracy around a lot of these means-tested programs, where if you just gave it to people, we know that almost everybody spends it in the way that we think people should spend it, which is on their basic needs. I think we saw this with the refundable childcare tax credit at the federal level - I don't think we would have had that conversation if it wasn't for Andrew Yang and him talking about UBI in the previous presidential election - even Mitt Romney was on board with a refundable child tax credit for everybody, which gives it to people who have children, who are the ones who need it. And it was too bad that it hasn't been extended, but I think all the studies have shown that it's been better than just about anything to reduce child poverty in this country. So wherever - actually having UBI like Andrew Yang was talking about is incredibly expensive, and so I wouldn't want to flip the switch and necessarily devote resources to giving everybody thousands of dollars per month right now. But I do think the concept is a good one for changing our approach to a lot of these public benefits. It is also demeaning as hell to go through the process of getting public benefits. You jump through all these hoops just to prove that you're poor enough, or disabled enough, or fleeing domestic violence enough - to get the paperwork necessary to prove that you're fleeing a domestic violence situation is awful. It's retraumatizing just to get what you need to survive on the street, because we don't have public benefits that really house everybody. Most of the benefits and most of the people I see in hearings in King County are unhoused people trying to get benefits - just to eat, much less get a job or whatnot. [00:20:26] Crystal Fincher: Yeah, that is the current situation and it is a shame, and we can do better. Another area where we can and have to do better is in keeping people safe. It's a concern that a lot of people have - people are looking at crime - wondering if they're going to be victimized and wondering if we're doing the right things about it. What can you do in your capacity as a state legislator to make people safer? [00:20:55] Jeff Manson: Yeah, no, it's a real issue, and it's something I feel - I live in Greenwood, I ride the E line downtown and it's an adventure every time. I've had stuff stolen and I've been doorbelling for about a month now, and it's what I hear more than just about anything. I think it's - as Democrats nationally - we're out of practice talking about crime. You know what I mean? Crime has been much lower - even now - over the last 20 years, 30 years than it was in say the 70s and the 80s. And now that it's ticking back up, and not just ticking back up, but accelerating back up here and nationwide, I think we're trying to figure out how to talk about it again. But it is going up and one of the basic public duties is to protect citizens. And I think it goes back to underfunded government, both on the services side and the criminal justice system side. On services, I think if you give people housing and you provide mental health supports, addiction supports, and provide access to community and to both government and individual support, then that's the root cause of a lot of crime. And we have not been - part of what we're seeing now is the results of under-investment in our government supports over the last several decades. So I think first and foremost, we need to get people housed and give them the support they need for their own individual recovery. I do believe housing needs to come first because anyone who's trying to take a step towards recovery, whether it's mental health or addiction, is just not gonna be able to take that first step if they are in fight-or-flight mode, 24/7 on the streets, and more vulnerable to the kind of crime we're talking about than the rest of us are. But once they are housed, then there's at least the opportunity to be able to get them services that they need. I also think we need more funding on the criminal justice side. Our courts have a two-year backlog in criminal trials, we don't have enough prosecutors or defenders or investigators or paralegals or social workers or mental health therapists. And we also have a police force, law enforcement that at least in Seattle has seen a lot of people leave. And I have mixed feelings about law enforcement, especially the last couple of years - after the murder of George Floyd, there was a big movement to increase accountability and oversight of police, which I 100% supported. We can not have law enforcement killing Black and Brown people and not having any consequences. So I supported the reforms from two sessions ago and was opposed to many of the attempts to roll those back this past session. But, while we do need accountability, while we need training, and while we need independent oversight, we still do need law enforcement - often they're responding to things that others could respond to. Maybe we don't need law enforcement to respond to every mental health crisis, but we do still need police officers and Seattle Police Department is down about 25% of their officers. They have homicide detectives who are now responding to 911 calls. So I do think our whole criminal justice system, including alternatives to incarceration and mental health supports, all need funding. And as a public servant myself, I see underfunded government in my line of work, and I think we should fully fund my public service, just like we need to fund the public servants who teach in our schools, and public servants who try our cases, and the public servants - the police, firefighters, first responders, who are the frontlines of our criminal justice system. [00:25:06] Crystal Fincher: Well, and you bring up an interesting point there in - looking at police and having them to respond to certain things, also looking at alternative responses or things that get more to treating the root cause. When, just as a general approach to crime, do you think - right now the majority of our resources are going into responses to crime pretty much after they've happened and trying to figure out are those right resources there, whether it's police or in the criminal legal system, to have it there. And we have severely underfunded alternative responses that get more to the root causes. So should we be shifting that priority in how we allocate our resources towards prevention and keeping people from being victimized in the first place? [00:25:58] Jeff Manson: Yes, but I think we can do both, and. I think it's all of the above. And I think after - a couple of years ago there was the slogan, Defund the Police. And I think it - I never thought that was the best slogan at the time or now, but I think the intent behind that for a lot of people who said that was - we should be funding alternatives to police response, and alternatives to incarceration, alternatives to solely punitive response - which I am 100% in support of. I don't think, and as someone who thinks government's underfunded and as a progressive Democrat, I don't think it's a zero-sum game. I don't think in order to fund something, you have to take away from another government service. I think law enforcement - just like firefighting, just like roads and electricity - are just a basic government resource that should be funded at a basic level. But in terms of where we should be directing new resources - should be towards those alternatives and getting at the root cause of a lot of crime. We have an acute crisis right now in that people call 911, or call the police, and they literally don't get a response. That's an immediate right now, this year, this month issue. While, on the other hand, the reason we're having an uptick in crime is that over the last couple of decades, we haven't invested in all this stuff to prevent the crime. So you need both - you need to attack the acute problem right now, but you also need to lay the groundwork and start investing in the social infrastructure to prevent crime in the future. And also when we talk about alternatives to incarceration, Drug Court is amazing - anecdotes say this, but studies show as well that those who successfully do Drug Court, it is a life-changing experience. But you don't get into Drug Court unless a police officer arrests you first. So I don't want to suggest that we start arresting people in order to get them into treatment that they need. But often it is the mechanism that gets them into where they need to go. I mean, Drug Court is hard - people talk about it - when I say people, people who may come at this from a different perspective than me - it's like, oh, that's the easy way out. It's just handing them services instead of actually being tough on crime or whatnot, but Drug Court's hard - you have to make regular court appearances, you have mandatory treatment, regular drug tests, and if you slip up you're back to jail. But those who graduate, who actually get all the way through, actually stay clean and get housed and become productive members of society. And we need to expand that opportunity - and things like LEAD, Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion, is another great program that - we hear the stories of how it's successful, but also the studies show that it actually has good outcomes and the amount of money invested is less than jailing somebody. But it is law enforcement that is assisting that diversion - it's that interaction with law enforcement that is allowing that to happen. So - [00:29:22] Crystal Fincher: Well and that brings up an interesting question. So in your perspective, should addiction, or even possession, be criminalized? Is that the best approach, or should we be treating it like a public health problem? [00:29:33] Jeff Manson: No, it's absolutely a public health problem. Yeah, it's - if you're pulled over and you've got half a ton of meth in your truck or something that's different, but yeah - simple possession, just being an addict - that is, these are people who are sick and they need treatment, just like someone who has COVID or cancer. It is a public health problem, and I very much believe in a harm reduction approach to addiction. But I do think that a lot of the property crime that we're seeing and other kinds of low-level criminal activity is the result of addiction. It doesn't mean that all addicts commit crimes - not all homeless people commit crimes, it's a unfair stereotype - but a lot of the criminal activity that we're seeing - packages stolen from porches, windows being broken in small businesses - a lot of that is people trying to feed their addiction and that's not an excuse for the behavior, but it is an explanation of the root cause of a lot of what we're seeing. [00:30:47] Crystal Fincher: And seemingly a roadmap to how to reduce the occurrences of crime committed as a result of addiction or dependency - that if we solve the root, then we also solve for the crime in many of those instances. I'm also wondering - we need to make such dramatic progress in terms of our approach to climate change, in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in mitigating the impacts that we're already feeling and that those who are most marginalized are feeling most acutely. And just starting off, our transportation sector is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions, so it seems like any solution needs to start there and it needs to be substantive. What would you propose, especially that impacts transportation-related emissions, to reduce those and help meet our climate goals? [00:31:54] Jeff Manson: Yeah, you know what? I was in fourth grade and I read the environment book, I remember explaining climate change to my parents and it was news to them - this was 1990, so it was news to them. I remember telling them - look, this is my future, mom and dad. And now I'm realizing now it's our present, right? And it's going to get worse, even if we do all the things right, it's going to get worse. But we've got the smoke from forest fires in our summer days, our few summer days here in Seattle, we can see the glaciers get smaller and smaller on the mountains every year. I have a family member who was essentially a climate refugee, who was living in a more tropical area and two Category 5 hurricanes left her without housing. She fortunately had the supports necessary to relocate, but this is scary. Fortunately, Washington State has been arguably the leader among the states in tackling climate change. Unfortunately, that's nowhere near close enough, but we should continue to push that envelope and be on the forefront as a state, not just for our own sake and doing our own part, but also to be a model for other states and other countries - look, here's what you can do. And not only is it not devastating to your economy to make these transitions, but it actually can make an economy more resilient if you do it the right way. So in terms of the things we need to do, we had a transportation package this last session. I don't think we need to wait another 10 years for the next transportation package, which has sort of been the model - it's 6 to 10 years between transportation packages. There was no gas tax increase on this last one. Some of it was federal money that was passing through, so I think there's an opportunity - maybe not this next session, but within the next couple - to do another transportation package which should be very heavily focused on climate-friendly infrastructure - transit and other alternative modes of transportation. We have the Link Light Rail coming through the middle of the 36th a decade from now, right through Interbay and into Ballard. And we need to make sure that - first of all, that happens, but also that it happens in a way that we have a light rail system that people are actually going to ride. And I think that means having light rail underground under the Ship Canal. We just saw that the Coast Guard is saying that any bridge would need to be - I think it's 205 feet above - and I saw the drawing - [00:34:36] Crystal Fincher: Gotta accommodate those mega-yachts. [00:34:38] Jeff Manson: You gotta accommodate the mega-yachts. [00:34:40] Crystal Fincher: That's a big priority. [00:34:41] Jeff Manson: And maybe - I don't know if there are other vessels that would also require it or not, but there's an easy solution here, guys - go under the Ship Canal. It's not that deep, and actually it turns out that a tunnel is not that much more expensive than going above ground than we thought it would be. It's not that tunneling got cheaper it's that we're realizing the cost of going above ground is even more expensive than it used to be. And now with the bridge height needing to be that high, it's probably even more expensive. So, if the state needs to provide additional funding in order to make that happen, then let's do it. If we can find funding from some other third party source, that'd be great. But I think this is going to be - this is a hundred year decision, right? Like wherever this line goes and wherever these stops go, those stops will still be there a hundred years from now. We have to get this right now and we can't just say - oh, interest rates went up by 0.5%, therefore we need to remove a stop or we need to do it this way or that way. By going underground, it also allows the light rail to go west of 15th Avenue - right now, the proposals are along 14th, but that's not where people want to go. The historical downtown Ballard, which will still be the historical downtown Ballard a hundred years from now, is about six blocks west of where they're wanting to send it. If you go underground, then you're not having to destroy all those buildings and we need to provide the funding for that. Whether that's a transportation package or some other source, I don't know, but - [00:36:18] Crystal Fincher: If you do get the opportunity to vote on a new transportation package, or help shape it - will you vote or support a package that includes highway expansion? [00:36:29] Jeff Manson: Not if that's the overwhelming priority of the money - what the priority needs to be - green infrastructure and transit. And representing the 36th - my duty would be to do the best that I can for the 36th District. And we already have two highways - we don't need anymore. Now would I absolutely never vote for something that expanded a highway? Sometimes you have to make compromises - there are also - I would be open to an argument about a freight corridor or something. Maybe there's a one particular spot where there needs to be an expansion. But overall, my philosophy is - the place that we are the farthest behind from where we should be is in terms of our transit system. We are 40 to 50 years behind where we should be on transit. [00:37:19] Crystal Fincher: What more can we do to help meet our goals? We've taken actions, but we're still behind our goals. We need to catch up and accelerate. Is there anything else we can do outside of our transportation system? Action that you could take to help make that change? [00:37:39] Jeff Manson: Yeah, there's a lot we can do. And our own goals are reduced carbon emissions by about half by 2030 - we're almost to 2030. It sounds weird to say that, but we're talking about - I would be in a legislative session in 2023. Those policy - the laws would take effect summer of 2023 and the actual effects of those policies won't even start until 2024, and then we're only basically five years away from 2030. So we have to do whatever we're going to do now. There are some things that did not pass this last session, which is where we can easily just start off - electric vehicle subsidies didn't pass - we should do that in order to encourage the electrification of our vehicle fleet and people's cars. There was a bill to require climate impacts to be part of comprehensive plans and the Growth Management Act that didn't pass - something we should look at. Other opportunities to move towards more electrification of homes - some of those bills didn't pass. So it was just a lot of opportunities to invest in our electric grid. We already have one of the less carbon-emitting electric grids since we have so much hydroelectric power in this state, but if we're going to electrify homes and vehicles, we are going to need more electrical capacity than we have historically. So that means we're going to have to expand our electric grid, and we really have an opportunity to model for the nation and the world on how you can build an electric grid that is totally carbon neutral. We can build more wind farms, more solar power, and the transmission lines to get it to population centers. We need to move - we need cleaning up the electric grid and moving things towards electricity that are not currently electricity. That's about 90%, probably, of our carbon goals - transportation being electric and investing in transit, and then electrifying pretty much every building, vehicle, or tool that we have is really the key to solving climate change. [00:40:10] Crystal Fincher: Well, and as we conclude our time today and are wrapping up, what is it that you think sets you apart from the crowded field of candidates that you are competing against in the 36th and how will voters' lives feel different as a result of you being their elected representative? [00:40:31] Jeff Manson: Well, I think I bring two things to the race primarily. One is - I have been doing, doing, doing to solve problems like this since I was a kid. I am not comfortable sitting still when I see a problem - I want to fix it. And I know that sometimes it takes a decade or more, it often takes working with a lot of other people. And I've been following that model for 30 years now, since I was 10 or 11 years old. And that's - I think that's the model of action that we want in a legislator - someone who sees a problem, is motivated and works their butt off to try to solve it, and is able to bring people together to do that. And I think I have a track record of doing that with progressive causes over the years. And I think the other is just an expertise in state government. I literally see how state laws and state budgets affect thousands of people every year and know at a granular level, how a turn of phrase in a statute can affect the outcome in an individual's case, or how a reduction in the state disability benefit by 20% results in changes in people's lives. And I think that perspective and being able to bring those stories of the people in my hearings into the Legislature and being able to speak to it from the perspective that I've been in, in my day job, could make a real difference. And besides that, I just love the 36th District. I've been there - I've been in this district for 15 years, it's a beautiful place, wonderful people - for those who could still afford to live in it. And would just really be honored to represent the 36th District in the Legislature and would just be such a joy to solve problems for people in the district. [00:42:28] Crystal Fincher: Well, thank you so much for joining us here today. [00:42:31] Jeff Manson: Thank you, Crystal. We had the pleasure of interviewing Our Lady Peace over Zoom video! Our Lady Peace released their upbeat, tecnicolor groove track “Future Disease,” the second single off their upcoming album ‘Spiritual Machines II' which will drop on January 28th. Blending catchy rhythms, guitars, and bass, this 80's inspired alt-pop reflection represents all things Our Lady Peace - addressing the future, having humility, and the importance of healing as a society and the journey that comes with it. This follows their recent US “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” tour announcement where they will be hitting cities like NYC, LA, Boston, Detroit, etc in November. Full dates below.“Future Disease is the bridge between Spiritual Machines & Spiritual Machines II. This song echoes some of the sonic flavors & production techniques from the original album. It gives us comfort to have a track that ties the two albums together.” - Raine MaidaEarlier this fall, Our Lady Peace announced the sequel to their critically acclaimed 2000's album ‘Spiritual Machines', a record which has become a pillar of late 90s alt rock and a prime example of their band's creative brilliance. ‘Spiritual Machines II' will serve as the answer to their 2000 LP which was influenced by inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil's book “The Age Of The Spiritual Machines.” ‘ Spiritual Machines II' is the anti-rock record Our Lady Peace fans have been waiting for. Produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek (with additional production by Jason Lader on three tracks), the album features the return of Kurzweil with new predictions such as near-future with UBI (Universal Basic Income), AI that will pass the Turing Test by 2029, and sustainable solutions to ending global hunger and poverty. ‘Spiritual Machines II' marks an uplifting new chapter for OLP as it carves out a new genre that is best described as future rock with each song crafted to represent the new predictions for our future as a society. Last summer, Our Lady Peace released the first track off the forthcoming album, “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” featuring Pussy Riot with a video to pair. The track is a reflection on celebrity influencer culture and how it has weakened the fibers of society. The choreography-ladened video uniquely contrasts the tongue-in-cheek nature of the song with carefree and colorful visuals, highlighting young activists and leaders that society should actually be making famous. They also introduced their Future Famous program, which recognizes a wide range of exceptional people in different fields (science, environmentalism, music, art, etc) who are making a real difference in the world. Episode 2 of The WWE (The Wild Wild Everywhere) series. Big Picture and Global Perspective category. Full list of industries covered on our website: jaef.foundation/problem-guide-jaef In this episode: We continue to talk about: Standard of Living, Standard of Earning, Minimum Wage, Minimum Standard of Living and Mandating Minimum Standard of Living Globally and the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI). Why the term Minimum Wage should be phased out because it's deceiving. Minimum Wage should be interpreted as the Minimum Standard of Living. Minimum Wage should be based on the agreed-upon Minimum Standard of Living (M.S.L) determined at three levels: City-level, Province / State / Region-level or Country-level. We dive deeper into the hypothetical scenario introduced at the end of episode 1 that what should happen after we establish an objective Minimum Standard of Living and Minimum Standard of Earning? We talk about how countries will have to do an inventory of their jobs and phase out all jobs that can't afford to pay their workforce Minimum Standard of Living. And that the perfect induction of UBI - Universal Basic Income which is picking up steam could be as a Government Wage Subsidy to all companies that can't pay their employees the required Minimum Standard of Living and or Minimum Standard of Earning. We tap into how we can create a new foundation - a new standard for creating jobs now that we've eliminated all jobs that don't meet the Minimum Standard of Living or Minimum Standard of Earning criterion. I don't have all the answers but I believe we can put our minds together and get to the bottom of things. Open up your heart and mind and let's take a ride. Bill Watson: Soul is where the inner & outer worlds meet: How do choices determine our souls path?

GreenplanetFM Podcast

There are many perspectives on what is soul; it’s like the blind man and the elephant, each has an insight into a larger totality that’s beyond the view of all.   I think we get closer to the truth when we are able to suspend judgment about these different perspectives in our exploration of the nature of soul.  Bill said -: back by popular demand - haha.  Before we get into it he says that words cannot express how important the American election has become for the whole world…and it is by no means simply about Trump vs. Biden or Republican vs. Democrat.  It is about freedom vs. the Great Reset. This is a fight for the soul of America. These are surely interesting times!  Fasten your seat belt! Tim - good to know there are soul fans out there - folks who understand empathy and compassion - so what can we say? All living beings have souls; some have “group souls”, they only function in a group context: a herd, a hive, a flock; do sheep have choices about shearing, being dipped, going to the works?  Are those moral choices? Is everything that involves a moral choice a Soul issue for Humans?   Bill says he thinks do.  Sea Shepherd is a soul issue.  WHY?  The oceans are dying.  The whales, from Orcas and Belugas to Blues, are disappearing.  We fought whalers for them. 5G is a soul issue.  Why?  The biosphere (and us) are dying from different forms of radiation. Electrohypersensitivity is becoming more common.  Immune systems are weakening.   We are witnessing a sustained, coordinated attack on—us It has been subtle and covert for decades, but not any more…   And what do we see?   Humans are starting to fight back.  Getting arrested, sometimes fined, sometimes beaten up, for unlawful (?) assembly.  For not wearing masks. As individuated, self-reflective humans, we are a species with individual souls.  Soul is the immortal expression of Humans; from a metaphysical (religious, philosophical) perspective we belong to the “Angelic Soul Group”.  Angelic describes our soul PATH, which is Service to Others.  If we listen to our inner voices, to our Higher Self, our guides, we stay on the path.  It’s the mind that gets us into trouble!   What’s wrong with mind? Because the mind offers an illusion of control.  There's nothing more joyful, more painful, more useless, and more powerful than the mind.  The brilliance of your mind will not save you, it will only make you terribly certain.  It took Bill many  years to really understand what Gurdjieff meant when he said, “To be clever is to be stupid.”  Being clever, wily, tricky is the realm of the mind.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gurdjieff  You can turn left by following your intuition and your mind may be giving you a million reasons why it is better to turn right… and they might all make sense.  But the more you follow your instinct, your gut hunch, which is your inner authority, the more you will be making decisions that are correct for you.  It’s important to not let the mind upset you or call the shots about what direction to take in life. You mentioned guides and higher self.  Do you recall your first contact? The year before he started kindy. He saw his two guides, he knew their names, names he had never heard before, and he could see and describe them.  One afternoon he opened the front door and let them in, sat them down at a little table in the living room, served them tea and had a conversation with them.  His mother and a friend were sitting on the couch and witnessed this.  Years later his mother told him that they thought he had a great imagination.  He told her that his guests were every bit as real to him as she and her guest were.  Contact with his guides tapered off when he went to school the following year, but he never doubted that they were with him, and still are. Saying that 3D Earth is a school: it is a world of opposites, of polarities.  Light/Dark, male/female, day/night, inner/outer, harmony/friction, peace/war; peace is a friction-free environment.  Yin/Yang,  push something long enough and hard enough, it turns into its opposite. It’s called the doctrine of reversion.  We contain the potential for both, and every choice, however small, is a test.  It moves us in one direction or another.   St Paul how often we know the right, yet do the wrong? That comes from listening to mind, using mind to make choices.  Better to “go inside”.  How do we “go inside” when we are faced with important choices? Your source of inner authority will determine that, we’re all different.   It’s not a made-up authority, or a philosophical one; it is part of your biological mechanism. It's your wiring, and it doesn't require your mind. It's an authority that allows you to operate correctly as yourself, to navigate confidently and skilfully on this plane of reality.   Sources of authority could be the solar plexus, like mine; or sacral, like yours; or several other possibilities.  Since you and I have different sources of inner authority, when we are “correct” we make decisions in a way different from each other. Tim asks Bill for an example of how our decision process would be different? Wave vs. grunt  Any listener can learn more about this, it is valuable knowledge (and knowledge protects) If really important and “stuck” or “stumped”, Bill Mentions the ancient oracle of China the I Ching.  Some interesting banter between Tim and Bill came up around this ancient Chinese oracle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Ching  Bill said the Angelic Soul Group’s path is Service to Others ; you can easily spot them, people who are really STO shine with their own light. In reality most folks here in 3D reality are STS ‘Service to Self’ and need a lamp—and that’s OK as long as the core intention is STO.  But there are many that consciously left the path many lifetimes ago, and by choice prefer the dark.  They are totally committed to STS.  They’re primarily materialistic, greedy, corrupt; they may have made a Faustian bargain at some time, a really bad choice, and they usually have psychopathic tendencies which means they have little or no empathy.  They also have the ability to knowingly do harm.  They are opportunistic, skillfully dishonest and they seek power. He believes it is a factor of electro-magnetics — they actually are 'magnetized to’ drawn into the wombs they resonate with. Like attracts like. The Bhagavad Gita actually describes that incarnation process “they have been “cast into wombs of similar disposition”.    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhagavad_Gita A good example of this is John D. Rockefeller, who once boasted that he would pay a salary of a million dollars to someone who is "...able to glide over every moral restraint with almost childlike disregard and has, besides other positive qualities, no scruples whatsoever and be ready to kill thousands of victims--without a murmur."($1MM adjusted to today =$31MM) And his son David found one!  His name is Henry Kissinger.    “It is not a matter of what is true that counts, but a matter of what is perceived to be true.” Bill, what was your first awareness that all was not well with the World Soul? High school in the late 50s.  I was outraged.  800 miles away…crops destroyed, Oct/Nov 1959 (61 years ago) started to do research.  Read Silent Spring in 1962. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Spring  "Is there a soul evolution process?  In which density is our astral existence?" There are several different models or theories about this, just like no consensus on the transition years from the Baby Boomers to GenX, GenY, Millennials.  5th density as I understand it is about contemplation. In the chain of densities, one through seven, the souls exist in 1 through 4 and in 6th, actively, and in 5th density passively, so the 5th is said to be where souls go when you leave your physical body in 3rd density. You get to review this life and learn from it, then decide what it is you want to do in your next incarnation.  It is pretty much accepted that the angelic realm, the bardo, the samboghakaya, the 6 lokas, all these “places” including heaven and hell, are all 5th density destinations that cluster not by geography but by thought wave. Learning is necessary for progress of soul...it’s all about lessons.  This is how we build our power center... What do our souls have to look forward to in a higher density world? There’s lots of speculation about ascension and what might await us.  We have certainly hit a point in time where things are getting worse on this planet.  Civilisations come and go in waves, and it is looking like the current wave has peaked and will be crashing in about 12 years, and humanity will be going through a dark patch in the near future. The ones that don’t wake up will be doing 3rd density over again. In third density we live with the illusion is that there is no link between consciousness and matter.   Actually consciousness can be matter.  Light is gravity. Optics are atomic particles, matter is antimatter... just reverse everything to understand the next level... it is all about balance, and the answer must always be zero. And zero is infinity. The illusion is that there is separation. It is the alteration of perception that turns the axis and creates the illusion of distance you can reverse that and understand that there is no distance between us and, say, Alpha Centauri.  If you warp space/time you travel by bringing your destination to you.  In 4D you have the capability without the "mechanical technology."  But even more importantly, you will be able to project into the future and see the consequences of any choice you make in the present.  There won’t be any “If only I had done this, or said that…”  There will be opportunities to work on what you’re passionate about with like-minded people without interference, betrayal, theft of IP or other painful experiences. Personal story In 1998 Bill was part of a research team in Taiwan, that was conducting a government-funded study of the effects of flower essences on the emotional patterns of Chinese patients.   One of his colleagues, whom he had known only briefly, was intensely psychic; she downloaded some information about him.  She said that three lifetimes ago he made a very big discovery, was on the edge of fame and fortune; however, his results were destroyed and he was discredited by the establishment.  This info caused something to crack inside, and it has been under repair ever since, it was a very deep wound that has taken this long to heal.  Saying this was very useful information, it helped reveal a pattern in his life, and aside from experiences in this lifetime why he had a deep-seated fear and distrust of the establishment.   Bill, can you do a quick recap on the different views of soul? There’s the Pre-modern Classical Paradigm, the Greek and Roman view was—neither spirit nor body, but an inner impulse.  Soul is a living quality of the body that animates it. The Greek word for soul is psyche; it is also the word for butterfly, which implies that it is capable of transmutation or metamorphosis.  = reincarnation. (  which will be covered at a later date). Soul is what moves us; we experience it in music and poetry…it is passion, desire, the peaks and depths of experience. Tim talks of Muse’s in ancient Greece - being in his understanding, Greek for a ‘mind angel’ - that whispers in the ears of philosopher mystics - stories, poetry etc  Bill - Says -I correspond with concert cellist in Belgium who writes, “I can feel the change hanging in the air on a g string “ She says, “To be able to listen to music, and let it in, one needs an open heart-- Yet music can also help you open your heart, the vibrations gently massaging the muscles until the Soul is ready to open up and let it in :) So if we are electro-chemical beings we respond to vibratory resonance, and  Soul is a mystery: it arises from the world of spirit, and expresses itself through the physical body …. Q: So where do we find it? It’s not lost, we just don’t realise it’s there.   The German philosopher Novalis wrote: The seat of the soul is where the inner world and the outer world meet.” The American poet Auden may have been responding to Novalis when he wrote, “The center that I cannot find is known to my unconscious mind.”   He finishes the stanza with, “I have no reason to despair because I am already there.” This tallies with what I mentioned in the last talk, Hillman’s notion that soul is what turns events into experience, that those experiences are our stories, and rightly remembered and shared, they give meaning to our lives. We have the expression “he’s lost the plot.”  It’s about finding meaning, Tim.  It’s what makes sense out of our individual lives.  When people feel despair, often they have given up hope because they have lost the thread, become disoriented, don’t know what to do with their lives.  One of the classics is Victor Frankl’s Man’s search for meaning. He was a WWII holocaust survivor.   The soul wants meaning and beauty…but we live in a world of more and more information and less and less meaning! Tim: it’s a compliment to say that someone has “the soul of a poet”.  Why is that? Poems convey meaning in an elegant, compelling way.  They “move” us to laughter or tears--or wherever the poet wants to take us.  They can express the full range of emotions—the highs and the lows—in a way that others relate to.   Bill wanted to share this poem that takes us deep into the feeling of being out of harmony with the soul:   In a dark time, the eye begins to see, I meet my shadow in the deepening shade; I hear my echo in the echoing wood-- A lord of nature weeping to a tree. I live between the heron and the wren, Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den. What's madness but nobility of soul At odds with circumstance? The day's on fire! I know the purity of pure despair, My shadow pinned against a sweating wall. That place among the rocks--is it a cave, Or winding path?  The edge is what I have. A steady storm of correspondences! A night flowing with birds, a ragged moon, And in broad day the midnight come again! A man goes far to find out what he is-- Death of the self in a long, tearless night, All natural shapes blazing unnatural light. Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire. My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly, Keeps buzzing at the sill.  Which I is I? A fallen man, I climb out of my fear. The mind enters itself, and God the mind, And one is One, free in the tearing wind. American poet Roethke died at 55, but lived through WWI, the Great Depression, and WWII; he saw…and felt much.  He became manic-depressive after WWII, but was driven to write his best poetry in the last 15 years of his life.  He had a hard ride, as did many men and women who have left behind a great legacy. Yes, hard times can certainly bring out the best and the worst in humans… Good times and bad have always come in cycles; I believe we’ve seen the best of times and along with the solar cycle, there’s a downturning with many out of work , businesses closed; what’s starting to look like food shortages worldwide and a coup in progress to crash the global economy…and many are still unaware, there’s’ reason to have deep concern for the future.  What creates harmony is balance.  We’re ‘way out of balance.  That creates intolerance.  Without tolerance,  freedom of expression is endangered.  The last thing we need in our society is more government-mandated rules and laws that limit our freedom of expression, which is a core New Zealand value.  Policing our speech, censoring our posts and telling us which words we can and cannot use is not the way to achieve a harmonious, tolerant multicultural society.  We hear a lot from the gov’t and from supposedly vulnerable minority groups about the need to embrace diversity, but the one diversity they don’t tolerate is diversity of opinion. …and the truth shall make you free.”   Today the truth is censored and many who actually hear it refuse to believe it.   Here are my assumptions about the future: our planet has become a very troubled place things may get worse before they improve people everywhere are being asked to evolve the coming years will be testing time--of resilience, endurance, patience, grounding, focus, non-attachment, good-heartedness. Joseph Campbell wrote that the old myths no longer deal with present reality, and we need to come together, listen to each other’s stories, create new ones.   He was the person who had a large influence on George Lucas of Star Wars.  The soul is the intermediary between the inner and the outer ((body and spirit), between life and consciousness; it represents limitless expansion of the higher self.  I can say with confidence that my life will end, but my soul will go on. Tim - and hopefully to a more harmonious place ... Let’s talk about the here and now, and the role of Soul in the science fiction movie that we seem to be living in. Ah, that could be one of many movies, my choices would be They Live or Bladerunner, the 1982 movie based on Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? where the replicants rebel against their human creator.  It was a very early and accurate portrayal of corporate control and what the modern occult arts can do in the real world. Soul has been reduced to a physical mechanism by modern science, which is creating a world of machine-like creatures!  And when we look to the behavioural sciences for soul, it’s much the same… In modern Western culture, Psychology (Greek = knowledge of the soul) treats soul as a mechanism that can be predictably programmed…to sell products or manipulate public opinion. And worse, MK-ULTRA, program killers and erase their memories On the other hand, Psychotherapy (= soul care) is about increasing self-awareness and enhancing the quality of life of the soul, and there have been huge advances in my lifetime. In the early 90s Bill taught for several years at ITP in CA, which was founded by Abraham Maslow, one of the founding fathers of Transpersonal Psychology…which recognises a transcendent or spiritual dimension to life—and which offers a wider context to soul development.  Assagioli was also a pioneer; in Psychosynthesis, the Spiritual self is developed as the center of sub-personalities.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Assagioli  The therapeutic process shines the light of understanding into the dark recesses of the human psyche…and to understand is to forgive…and forgiveness has a liberating effect on the soul. (this is one aspect of the transformative process)  & Ho’oponopono. This term is from Hawaii and extremely profound. There is a focus on shadow work --reclaiming & integrating disowned elements of our psyche (disowned or unrecognised emotions, attitudes) The Jungian approach to healing is alchemical—a series of symbolic processes for doing the inner work and transmuting the soul.  It draws on correspondences to archetypes found in the Natural world.  I’ll come back to this alchemical approach.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungian_archetypes  I also worked with Stan and Christina Grof for two years in the early 90s as Director of the Spiritual Emergence Network; it was created to help souls in crisis, often a Kundalini awakening, occasionally drug-induced. …Fillmore.    www.stangrof.com I think it’s important for all of us to make the connection between individual neuroses…and social problems…and to get involved, socially and politically.   What about Soul and career choices? What happens if we choose something that is out of harmony with what the soul wants.  There are no “wrong” choices, there are only “lessons”.  Some people know exactly what they want to do with their lives and start training early; they become expert and successful at a young age…and then they are faced with different kinds of choices.  Others may never find work that satisfies the soul, and change jobs many times (either out of dissatisfaction, or because they have many different lessons to learn, as was my case) Throughout my career I’ve worked with more than 80 orgs in six different countries; in most cases, the goal was to change the company culture in ways that made them more effective.  Effectiveness has two components: efficiency and satisfaction.  Work can be “soul-destroying”, particularly if the focus is just on efficiency; it’s a bit like white bread and sugar, all the goodness has been refined out.  At one point in his life Roethke (with the soul of a poet) worked as an insurance salesman.  Here’s a poem about what he “saw”: I have known the inexorable sadness of pencils, Neat in their boxes, dolor of pad and paper weight, All the misery of manila folders and mucilage, Desolation in immaculate public places, Lonely reception room, lavatory, switchboard, The unalterable pathos of basin and pitcher, Ritual of multigraph, paper-clip, comma, Endless duplication of lives and objects. And I have seen dust from the walls of institutions, Finer than flour, alive, more dangerous than silica, Sift, almost invisible, through long afternoons of tedium, Dropping a fine film on nails and delicate eyebrows, Glazing the pale hair, the duplicate grey standard faces. That poem is called “Dolor”, the word for grief in Latin.   I was part of a research team in the 70s that investigated “work spirit”.  We interviewed people in “ordinary” low-level jobs e.g. on the factory floor, they had been doing the same job for years. They were singled out by their supervisor because their performance was consistently excellent. We wanted to find out what motivated them.  They were quite extraordinary beings, very peaceful and content within themselves. Examples: (2) One thing that many HR departments frequently use when they’re hiring is psychometric tests to select the applicant that’s best suited to the job they’re applying for.  I would propose that in the future, all candidates for public office take a battery of tests, things like the 16PF and what’s called the Sorenson Pathology Index—as a measure of their trustworthiness.  This has been a perennial problem and finally we are witnessing the extent of the corruption and I believe we will soon be seeing a collapse of people’s confidence in government, which in a world of global communication is more contagious than a flu virus. Q:  We are heading toward an evolutionary event horizon at a rate of knots. What themes are emerging from the collective unconscious? The modern scientific point of view is that the soul is a strictly physical entity, located in the Pineal Gland, which Descartes called  the “seat of the soul”.  …and we are now at the endgame of the age of enlightenment that began in his lifetime in the 17thC: scientific method, based on analytical thinking, became the foundation of modern civilisation.  That cosmology which was built on the cornerstones laid by Descartes, Bacon and Galileo.    Those philosophers are responsible for our plight.   Cosmology describes "the world as (something)—their assumption is, "world as machine," which is a myth…and The world soul is crying: let us out!  We’re not machines!  We want to be free! We need a new, different, and more promising myth.  I like Hendrik Skolimowski’s point of departure for eco-cosmology, he suggests "world as sanctuary."  (from sanctus, a holy place, consecrated ground).    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henryk_Skolimowski  We should be having serious concerns about the ethical standards of the scientists engaged in nuclear, genetic, bio-warfare and nano research, to name a few. It is right to challenge and question, for this has become an age where technology is assuming the status of a god, and as we know, the goal of the transhumanists is to overcome death.  This was foretold.  We’ve been warned; it’s all been hidden in plain sight.  We all have to assume a share of the responsibility for giving up our power to these high priests without fully comprehending their values and motives So … WHY is all this happening NOW? It’s all about cycles.   We are living through a cycle shift of the World Ages, how that shift correlates to the evolution of both technology and human consciousness, how to live your life in sync with this great cycle change.  An “age” is one sign of the zodiac, 30 degrees; 2160 years, so each degree is  I think a consensus of astrologers would agree that we have fully entered the Aquarian age Like the preceding age of Pisces, Aquarius is a symbol, and symbols are frequencies; they are used to send us info (for good or otherwise)…and they are being used to manipulate us by sending signals of coming actions through symbols.  The core theory is social engineering, the work of Edward Bernays; it’s about controlling people by manipulating energy and engineering consent.  It is the basis of predatory programming and literally a form of black magic.  It's a form of subliminal mind control,  a shell game of misdirection & distraction.  And they are expert at it.   They make plans based on AI, Artificial Intelligence - they have the strategy laid out and they are using AI to drive the tactics because the global chess game is now changing rapidly and one of the transhumanist goals is to connect the human mind to AI.  They will be experimenting on profoundly autistic children. https://www.ourplanet.org/greenplanetfm/dr-robin-kelly-what-is-the-trans-humanism-agenda-is-it-machine-versus-soul  Of course, the endgame is soul capture or destruction.  They want to control us, and already we are seeing the result of lockdowns all over Europe, and how the press, the police and the politicians have been bought with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation money to enforce them and keep the people in fear. So this is a critical moment in history: Demands on Humans are becoming unreasonable.  It is no longer about reason and dialogue and finding common ground, it is about power and control.  If they succeed, we can expect total surveillance, predictive programming, UBI Universal Basic Income and worse.  The technocracy and transhumanist agendas are soul-destroying;  If we are to grow out of our adolescent aspiration to play God and control everything, our technological ambition must be scaled down. How can we compete with all that firepower?  If we spot something, share the information widely.  It will be reviled as conspiracy theory and banned from social media by the tech oligarchs but it shines a spotlight on the way they think and can alter their plans.  I can’t help wondering if any of them are aware that they took a wrong turn somewhere in their past and believe it’s too late to go back.  Like Macbeth at Dunsinane.  Come wind, blow wrack—at least we’ll die with harness on our back.” Be aware, don’t consent if something doesn’t feel right to you.  Do the right thing, no matter what (and trust your gut—it knows instinctively what the “right thing” is).  There are consequences for ignoring warning signs, also for doing nothing.   You mentioned that this is a form of black magic. Is it being used for soul capture? Black magic is the use of occult means to gain power over others.  It is not limited to primitive cultures, there are high-tech versions.  However the methods to counter it and heal it are traditional and time honoured.  That is the realm of the shaman.   What does that have to do with soul?    Bill Says says EVERYTHING.  The shaman is a soul healer.  There is growing soul sickness: we see it in people knowing the right, and doing the wrong (in some cases, the “wrong” means doing nothing)  We see it in spiritual amnesia--forgetting who we are, and what we’re here to do. There is soul loss…that comes about through sale, barter, trickery (being gullible, loss of critical thinking), alienation…there is a stable full of them in Hollywood. So let’s briefly explore the shaman’s view of reality.  In virtually all tribal cultures you have a leader, a chief; in Maori culture that’s the kaumatua; you also have a shaman, that’s the tohunga.  They're two different roles; one is a public position and the other is a private position.  One looks after the physical well-being of the tribe, the other is a kind of doctor who heals through access to Spirit:  Soul is the vehicle for astral travel. For 000s of years, the shamans have been astronauts of inner space…they are people with an 'active third eye' who can see directly into higher dimensions.  The tribal shaman lived apart from the tribe, their life path was developing occult power to gain access to the realm of spirits.  Their primary concern was the relationship of the living to the dead, a relationship intimately associated with the Moon's waxing and waning, so they hung out in the mountains with the Moon Goddess.   The shaman's unique gift is the power to release the soul from the bodily frame in order to travel between worlds and return unharmed.  In their roles as intermediaries between the living and the dead, between the worlds of the known and the unknown, they were respected and sometimes feared by the common folk.  They could heal sickness and bring special knowledge from the spirit world for the benefit of their community.  In times of serious trouble the tribe would consult with them--Axis mundi, trance, visit spirits (gods, ancestors) & return with information.   Whenever we suffer physical or emotional trauma, a part of our Soul flees from the body to survive the experience; with every new incident, our essence and vitality grows weaker. This process is called “Soul Loss”; in psychological terms, it’s called dissociation.  It’s a natural protective mechanism that occurs when we become disconnected from our core, the source of our vitality.  It’s the experience of losing touch with your Soul, which is always there in the background of your life, but it’s not always accessible due to the psychological traumas, abuses, and other blockages.  Dissociation is used to survive potentially destructive traumatic events, such as Any form of abuse, e.g., sexual, emotional, physical or mental An event of prolonged grief, pain, and fear that made you feel helpless or impotent Deep-seated addictions e.g., substance dependency, gambling, eating disorders A near-death or out-of-body experience of NDE Being forced to act against your morals An experience of intense rejection or abandonment Witnessing the unexpected death of someone A sudden and shocking accident Entering a relationship without strong personal boundaries (resulting in an unhealthy relationship and losing your personal power) So how do we regain connection with our Soul?  Through a process called Soul Retrieval.  In shamanic cultures, Soul loss is understood to be a spiritual illness.  When our Soul fragments, the life force weakens and we open to all kinds of emotional, physical, and mental problems.  Returning to wholeness and health depends on recovering the missing part or parts of the Soul through the practice of inner work, So for example in Chinese culture, which has shamanic roots, drug, alcohol, gambling and other self-destructive problems are often dealt with by a shaman, not by a psychologist.   In some shamanic cultures, soul retrieval is treated as an initiatory process.  That’s correct, says Bill saying he has studied Mayan culture and explored archaeological sites in Mexico’s Yucatan, Chiapas and Guatemala since 1972; He became a Mayan daykeeper in 2004. In the Mayan culture there is a strong oral tradition; everyone sings songs and tells stories.  Children are allowed to experience and express the full range of emotions.  In initiations into adulthood, a young man or woman must wrestle with Death—they go down into the underworld to retrieve their own soul from their romantic feelings – those are feelings that steal the imagination by stealing their heart, which makes them feel hollow inside… …but before that experience, the elders put them through language training, because in their cultural understanding they believe the greatest weapon against Death is the power of poetic language…that the words themselves have magical properties.  This might sound strange, but you can't kill death; the Mayans believe you can only beguile* Death, because it loves beautiful words so much it will make a deal with you.  It will say, 'I'll give you back your soul IF on a regular basis you send messages to the Holy."  (The Holy are 13 gods and 13 goddesses of the underworld; they understand and love metaphor--images without the verb 'to be.' When you do not have a verb 'to be' you can't speak unless you use metaphor.  Gurdjieff said, “If there’s an I in one’s presence, then God and the devil are of no account.” * To deceive by guile or charm:    To distract the attention of; divert     To amuse or charm; delight or fascinate. So the power of these initiations are that they cause these young people to become something that feeds life beyond themselves. It's not ego involvement or self enlightenment. It's something beyond yourself, for the universe. Right.  It’s pure Service to Others.  STO.  Grief is a core emotion, it can be too powerful for the psyche to integrate.  The soul longs to express feelings but holds back out of fear of the depths of pain that will be released.  Shame and depression are considered to be an inability to deal with grief.  Somewhere deep in the memory of our souls, no matter what our ancestry, a deep understanding and capacity for wonder sits weeping…and waiting… …and that emotional blockage can render people powerless in difficult times.   When we feel powerless, we long to be listened to.  The pain is relieved when the story comes out, it frees people… …and when stories are truly heard, it unblocks subconscious amnesia and transforms it into a liquid grief of remembrance. I have many times witnessed this unblocking, it is a powerfully transformative event. Grief properly channeled is the source of art.  A Guatemalan shaman who lived through the CIA atrocities in his country over a 36 year period and saw his village destroyed and many of his friends and relatives killed told Bill something similar to what I (Tim) mentioned in last weeks show about the two wolves fighting: He said, "You love what you love more than you love your hate.  If what you love is the divine, story, culture, children, then instead of blowing a whistle, you'll strive to keep the seeds alive.”  That’s how he transforms his grief, he considers that the source of his creative power.  Keeping "the seeds alive" can be a means of spiritual survival in turbulent times. Mayans treat caves and baths as sacred, places where the gods and first peoples were born.  They believe steam baths and sweat lodges cleanse the soul; that was typically done before an important ceremony; Bill says Tim!! - You and I are carrying a burden on behalf of generations of Humans, here and yet to come.  Easy to be crushed under the weight of knowledge if people won’t hear your stories.  They need to wake up, stand up, tell their stories before it’s too late. Bill sailed here to NZ on his yacht - he is a sailor, coming to NZ on a waka. (canoe, boat, kayak)  Saying he knows the sky.  WHY, when you can see chemtrails frequently—have they been taboo at climate conferences ever since Rio? That out of bounds because it is not part of the “agenda”, which is a big fat LIE.  GeoEngineering—Gates—Harvard—American Elements—Rothschild’s PG&E.  Fires.  Hunger.  Massive relocations.  Landgrabs.  Lockdowns.  All pieces of the puzzle. At the same time an increase in sex, violence, all free-to-view, another soul trap. Addiction.  Sex & love addicts, perversions made socially acceptable.  What happens to the soul?  Distracted from its mission/purpose/destiny.  By devices.  By artifice. At this transition point there’s a war going on in an unseen realm.  The Dark Side--Gates, Schwab et.al.--have  been “cast into wombs of similar disposition” — as it says in the Bhagavad Gita.  Jean Baudrillard, the French social scientist, said “The sad thing about AI is that it lacks artifice and therefore intelligence.”  (= cleverness, crafty, wily) What to do! Go with your intuition. Connect with those who add value, who make right choices Your emotional state is important, if you keep your vibe up, you become invisible to them; our refuge is in higher states of consciousness.  I don’t fear death but I fear the consequences of soul entrapment as the result of wrong choices and embracing the dark.  There are Flower Essences (Covered 2 weeks ago)  for different situations and mental/emotional states, there’s no need to carry a burden.  As Tim says, let your candle burn brightly…so to do that you must be clear of emotional baggage.  This therapy is both effective and relatively inexpensive. *ln the words of H.G. Wells, “Maybe the earliest dawn of human greatness will be the mass realisation of the last 200 years and how terribly out of harmony it is.” In 1781 there was a mutation that transformed humanity.  Not all at once, but over time…from  seven-centered strategic beings to nine-centered  beings, and no one took much notice.  This mutation  took place in the visual cortex, which had been honed through our binocular vision into a specific focus.  For thousands of years the way in which one scanned the environment was also the way in which one collected information on the inside in terms of the memory system. This mutation in the visual cortex  eliminated the need for our binocular vision to focus specifically, it opened up the potential of peripheral  or receptive vision.  That's very  different from the narrow focused strategic look that relates to left hemisphere dominance. Saying … There will be another significant mutation in this decade, 2027. This isn’t the time to discuss it, but there are already many signs that it will happen.  It’s all part of the program that we live in, and we are homo sapiens in transitus.  Egypt was an ancient culture that had lots of rituals that related to Soul and reincarnation, or life after death.  What wisdom have they passed on?  The Emerald Tablets are said to be written by Thoth, the Atlantean priest who escaped the deluge and is said to have incarnated into a line of Egyptian pharaohs from the earliest dynastic period for more than 2000 years.  Whether that’s true or not, the Emerald Tablets contain some real soul wisdom.  I have a few brief quotes here to illustrate: Man is only what he believeth, a brother of darkness or a child of the Light. Darkness fetters the Soul. Only the one who is seeking may ever hope to be free. The body is nothing.  The Soul is ALL.  Let not your body be a fetter. Only the Soul is space-free, has life that is really a life. “When ye as men can learn that nothing but progress of Soul can count in the end, then truly ye are free from all bondage, free to work in a harmony of Law.” There is much more in this interview - and that crying and tears are both a profound and wonderful way to clear our being of hurt, loss  and trauma - well worth listening - just from a standpoint of knowing you are not alone. -Tim   Next Week’s Interview: We are still flying by the seat of our pants - Watch this space.

We hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter weekend despite the circumstances. It was a huge weekend in the news with the lockdowns in many states getting more and more stringent. As Governors and local leaders implement new virus crackdowns, new political bullies are emerging. In Michigan there's Governor Gretchen Whitmer who has implemented new orders that ban traveling to and from homes other than your own. Additionally, she's banned all gatherings of any size. We discuss other emerging political bullies in states like Kentucky, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Over the weekend, the Pope expressed new support for UBI (Universal Basic Income) which is a policy made popular by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang. We also discuss the media's continuous bias in their selective "omissions" of information and in their faulty statistics. “If you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of his strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down on his shoulders—what would you tell him to do?” “I . . . don’t know. What . . . could he do? What would you tell him?” “To shrug.” In this episode of Made You Think, Neil and Nat discuss Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, a piece of philosophy disguised as a novel. Probably the 10th longest book in Latin language, Atlas Shrugged is a controversial, polarizing book that attacks Socialism, references Postmodernism and develops Objectivism, Rand’s philosophical system. So you think that money is the root of all evil?” said Francisco d’Anconia. “Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can’t exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil? We cover a wide range of topics, including: Money as the root of all evil or source of all good Why academics and politicians see successful businessmen with distrust Wealthy kids arguing for socialism The truth about law (spoiler: you are not obliged to obey it) A 3 hour long discourse Writing sex scenes And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand! Re-reading the book may help understand better the concepts. 9:05 - The book starts with a parallel world set in the 50ties, with two kinds of people: the industrious productive ones running big infrastructure businesses of the Nation, and the socialists, government ones (described as parasites). The main plot is that the productive ones start disappearing, and the socialists intervene to try to keep the economy running and avoid collapsing. 13:19 – The idea is that the more one tries to control the economy, the worst it's going to get. The example of limiting book sales to 10k. 15:24 – Introducing the characters of Francisco d'Anconia and Hank Rearden. Money as the root of all evil. Criticism of money made by people that never understood how someone actually makes money. 19:00 – Tangent. Most of the critiques to money as the origin of all evil originates between academics or congressman, people that project their experiences "playing politics" and assume businessmen are filthy rich because of a more aggressive political game. 21:11 – Examples of activities that make money without creating value. High frequency trading, hardcore rent seeking. The money test, or how to know if you are effectively creating value. Feeling guilty when asking money, cutting through bullshit. 25:05 – Counter-argument: money as the source of all good. Money allows us to cooperate. 29:47 – We don't see that many successful people in business arguing for socialism. On the opposite side, we can see many wealthy kids arguing for socialism. Why people in the artistic communities advocate for socialism while earning millions on performances. The different approach to socialism between wealthy kids and kids with scholarships. Forced redistribution may not be sustainable in the long term. 34:22 – Tony Robbins about the ideal amount to tax, so to pay for public services, and not to discourage taxpayers to fly away. Striking a fine balance is even more important when technologies that enable us to avoid taxation are widely available. 38:28 – Hank put on trial by the government. The nature of laws is that they have to be enforced by force. Most people won't voluntarily do what government order them to do unless pointed with a gun. 42:56 – Most people think of laws and rules as things they have to follow, instead of options that have consequences. The idea that a rule is just something that typically advantageous to follow. Startups influencing how new rules for grey areas will be legislated. Why NY regulators don't go after illicit listing on AirBnB. 47:24 – John Galt speech (spoiler alert). Layout of objectivism, Ayn Rand’s main contribution to philosophy, as some sort of adaptation of Aristotelian ethics and metaphysics. In Rand's objectivism there can't be contradictions. Or, going against postmodernism, there is no complete subjectivity. 51:39 – Objectivism: Existence is Identity, Consciousness is Identification. Reality is not going to change if we hide away from it. Meaning of life and meaningful work as the purpose of life. Reason, purpose, self-esteem. 55:00 – Why people is unhappy with their job. Our jobs is where we spend most of our active ours, and if that is not purposeful, it's hard to be satisfied. Corollaries from Sovereign Individual. We are in a time where in response to new technologies, government reacts in a more socialist direction, so the more productive people go somewhere else. The importance of cryptocurrency in this movement vs gold. 59:52 – Logic against postmodernism. Not saying anything, keeping the mouth shut and dying, is the only way to fulfill the argument of objectiveness non-existence. 1:01:43 – The roles of governments. The need of a third-party force as a result of the concept of property. Protection, Roads, Public Parks: how would they work if left to private initiative. Social Security, a legalized Ponzi scheme, works only if enforced. Alternatives to Social Security and who pays for it. 1:11:29 – Tangent. Criticism to Atlas Shrugged as it doesn't convince someone who is convinced of the opposite. University is very liberal biased. It's very tough to get grants to do research that doesn't confirm liberal ideology. 1:13:56 – Outlawing ideas make them more compelling. The case of silencing gender differences. 1:16:43 – Diving into objectivism in School. The contrast of female characters of Ayn Rand books. Sex scenes and description of scenes. 1:22:11 – Tangent. Rand’s sex scenes are more emotional-psychological than physical. Philosophy of love, related to the meaning of life. Love as a sense of achievement. Interpretations of love possession. 1:26:29 – Closing quote. “In the name of the best within you, do not sacrifice this world to those who are its worst. In the name of the values that keep you alive, do not let your vision of man be distorted by the ugly, the cowardly, the mindless in those who have never achieved his title. Do not lose your knowledge that man’s proper estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind and a step that travels unlimited roads. Today we look at Universal Basic Income, or UBI. With increasingly advanced artificial intelligence and robotics, we face the threat of job loss on an unprecedented scale — by many estimates well into double digits and some forecasting a majority of the workforce will at some point not be needed.   Others look at current poverty rates and the difficulty of escaping a downward economic spiral and ask if we are doing enough to give members of our society the chance to invest in their own growth and build a better future.   My guest today is Larry Cohen, founder of “Build the Floor”, a Universal Basic Income advocacy group.   We discuss what UBI is and how it fits into the context of modern politics and economics. Then Larry addresses the most common criticisms of the concept and ultimately explores how such an endeavor could be funded.   More about Larry at: https://twitter.com/larrycohen   More on UBI: Build the Floor: https://buildthefloor.org Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/BasicIncome/ Economic Security Project: https://economicsecurityproject.org Book: “The War on Normal People”: https://www.amazon.com/War-Normal-People-Disappearing-Universal/dp/0316414247   _________________________________   More at: https://www.MindAndMachine.io

Welcome back from the blur that is July 4th Weekend! Last week, Dap (@dapisdope) sat down with one of REELYDOPE’s shadow investors, Mosie on Over, to talk Rick Famuyiwa’s 2015 film, Dope, and more! In Focal Point discussion, the two discuss the merits, nostalgic elements, and faults of the “indie” coming-of-age film, Dope. While Dap maintains his position from his infamous Blavity screed, Mosie has much fonder feelings about it and says just as much. After the break, the two then discussed Y Combinator’s move to provide UBI (Universal Basic Income) to select families in Oakland. From the merits of the thought experiment to its potentially dangerous implications, they air it out. As always, intros and interludes by Shruggs and the official hashtag of the show is #reelydoperadio. Don’t forget to rate us on ITunes, Stitcher, and wherever else you listen to us! And mark your calendars: After this season of REELYDOPE Radio, we’ll be taking a short-ish hiatus to work on things and plan Season 4!

Time Banks, Green Dollars, Savings Pools    The interview initially starts with latest topics of Universal basic income, Bitcoin and crypto currencies and that people are awakening to the fact that central bankers don’t have a clue as to solve this ongoing and deteriorating crisis. In NZ the situation today looks pretty good to the casual observer - listen to MSM and government sources and we are in a stable and robust moderately growing economy - everything is quite good, some of our major trading partners are experiencing some head winds but … ‘she’ll be right.’   If you rule out the dairy shock of the last 14 months and take out the Auckland property bubble but don’t worry about those little wobbles, we as a country are doing just fine! What this means that we in NZ are going to be following most of the rest of the world into 'debt deflation' which over the coming years is going to take hold with a greater severity. We have been a lucky country and managed to come through the recent (GFC) Global Financial Crash of 2008 along with Australia and NZ being almost alone in the world because we had many trade ties to China and we did not get hammered like other countries  - Australian minerals and NZ dairy were doing very well. China being the last big bubble to implode and it looks like it is going to do so now as well - this is big news, for if China starts to deflate, the rest of the world has nowhere to go … who is going to prop up all the bubbles and asset prices?  It appears that there is soon going to be a rush to get out of all the equities markets. As this has all been built on debt finance and short sighted policies.  Most small cities in NZ can do a certain amount of business locally, so that what is produced locally and the money that changes hands, gets recycled through the commercial areas of that town and district. however when it comes to big ticket items, money and goods or materials they may come from a larger more distant source, the money that goes around in a smaller isolated town or city, has a tendency to quickly go back out of town, sometimes very rapidly, hence keeping the area less financial and liquid. If you have a local currency, like time banks this can cycle through the localised area continuously supporting local community and business, however if you have a national currency it comes and then leaves and if there is a head office overseas, the money actually leaves the country. For example the near on $5 billion in profit from the large Australian trading banks, and the 4.7 million NZ population, gives one cause to realise how much money leaves NZ for other countries. At present local and regional government are becoming interested in embracing forms of alternative currencies (listen to the interview for more) Covering the immediacy of putting in a Time Bank, you get the community engaged, working, and creating value and worth.   Time Banks are able to work in very well with voluntary agencies and there are a number of them in NZ and growing from strength to strength. Project Lyttlelton http://www.lyttelton.net.nz as a time bank example, has become the glue of the community that as they had been established prior to the Christchurch earthquake it was through their tightly associated team and connectivity, that they were able to mobilise within minutes of the earthquake, have people on the ground and assisting hugely with civil defence, police, ambulances and the fire department and council.  Phil also gives a narrative as to how a time bank can be set up. Once you set up with freely available software and you have your team of early adopters you can branch out. Plus, get some of your charitable and non profit organisations onboard early because you can also assist these NGO’s donating ‘numbers of hours’ to them, which means that you can assist them with additional help, because of ‘serial volunteers' - people who like to work and donate their time and effort to the community. These people love to work for community and they are just living their values. This way Time Banks can put their ‘accumulative time’ into a ‘community chest’ which can be called upon and used by various charities etc. But also in a simple situation of a hairdresser swapping hours for their lawns to be mowed or gardening for house painting. Tuition for baby sitting etc. That Christchurch City at present is looking at the possibility of a council backed regional currency - which is a very interesting concept. Margaret Jeffries is even talking about a UBI Universal Basic Income being included in this discussion. Software used is called Community Weaver by Time Banks USA   http://timebanks.org/get-started/community-weaver/ Also, Community Forge - Hamlets            http://communityforge.net/en/software Note that the whole of NSW in Australia are on a Community Forge system. Madison in Dane County is a time bank in Wisconsin USA and has over 2000 members  at http://danecountytimebank.org The founder of Time banks was Edgar S Cahn who was an invalid, yet he could still think and do simple tasks and he set out to create a time bank, because he did not like being seen as in-valid! https://www.bostonfed.org/commdev/c&b/2005/fall/nonmonetary.pdf   We also cover Professor Thomas Greco who is presently in Greece to educate and assist in creating alternative currencies as Greece’s economy has floundered. That the imposed austerity exacerbates the problem that it is claiming to fix, because the people at the lower socio economic spectrum are the ones who suffer the most because all their money is spent keeping themselves from going under. So austerity starves the economy of liquidity thus you restrict economic activity.  Time banks and ‘Green drachma’s’ can really pull the strings of community together and get an economy up and running very quickly and bring more stability and peace to the community.    thgreco@mindspring.com for more information. Phil says that it’s a good idea to have a back up and have a connection to a time banks or some other localised currency system - because you never know when you may need one.   http://www.le.org.nz   A very interesting interview, with one or two seconds of scratchy recording due to a chronic limitation in the use of copper wires in NZ’s telecom system.
