Our Lord.  Whether in Roman culture or early American culture, we have a tragic past in the handling of Your image bearers, and those who are siblings in Christ, as lesser beings.  Father forgive us. As Paul confronts this, He points both slaves and masters to You as our great Lord and master. We all answer to you.  The concept of slavery has changed in our Christian language, as so often it now relates to our bondage to sin.How ironic it is for us to consider slavery to YOU as freedom, for Paul says to the Romans, “You have been set free from sin and slaves to God.”It is in submission to you that we find true freedom. May you deeply teach us what this means as our independent spirit wrestles against the concept of slavery.  As a Father, a people-pleaser, a man who has looked at others as less than, and a man who has found himself in bondage, I am convicted in these verses. God, how often I want things to look good or do well... for me.  Yet, you call me to have a sincere heart. That I trust in you. That I bear the burdens of those in my life. That I would love my brother as myself. And that I would love you with my whole heart. This, I believe is the sincerity of heart. Lead us into meaningful relationships with those in poverty.   I pray that we would be a people marked by compassion that leads to action, that we would take seriously the call to take care of the poor, that we would be openhanded with our lives and our resources, to literally feed those who are hungry, to clothes those who are naked, to shelter those who are alienated and alone.  May our hearts be obedient to our new mission, willing to be uncomfortable, to risk, to sacrifice for those suffering from poverty, for You Jesus.  Destroy the stereotypes, the negative thoughts, and the busyness in our hearts and lives that keep us from being close to You and those in need. We learn about being helpful today are you a helpful person? Do you help others?  Helping provides them the opportunity to grow up to be a better person. when we help others we build up our character. Christmas is often associated with giving and sharing. There is nothing more meaningful and fulfilling then to be generous to those in need especially this time of the year. This is why Christmas is also the best time to help others. Here are five reasons why helping others will actually benefit everyone: 1. Helping others will help us to see life differently. Helping others will allow them us to see the world beyond our daily life. Being helpful will help to teach us to be thankful for what we do have and to be happy in the simple things. This Christmas, help them realize this by donating their old toys to someone that does not have what we have. 2. Helping others will teach us about sharing Sharing their time, talent and treasures will help them realize that Christmas is not about how much they will receive but how much they can give. That whatever material or financial “excesses” we may have in life will have more meaning when shared with others in need. 3. Helping others makes us aware of our community Make it a Christmas tradition to do random acts of kindness such as giving a bottle of water to a tired security guard in a mall or sending a greeting card to a neighbor or friend who may be alone this season. 4. Helping others creates more compassion and humility. we need to learn to care. Being exposed to helping others will help us to be humble instead of thinking too highly of ourselves. We will also learn to be more sensitive to the needs of others rather than being too pre-occupied with what will only benefit them. Make a list together as a family of the people they wish to help and how they think they can help them. 5. Helping others will lead to real happiness. Helping others creates happiness for all. Knowing that we have made another person happy will allow everyone to experience real joy in their hearts. Try this! Try being a “secret Santa” to one person that you wish to make happy. Start with someone in your family, or a neighbor, or even a playmate. you are never too young or too old to be helpful Santa is watching, let's be helpful today! Selfie, how do you help others? We know you're busy, you know we're busy, but we're inviting you to carve time, 5 minutes at most, out of your day to talk to yourself. Wait, what? Yes. I'm serious. Yourself needs to tell you something and it's time we start listening. Here's to the next 31 days, for 5 tiny little minutes, telling ourselves the irrefutable truth about life, love and faith. Think of it as a quick swim sprint into the deep end.

Holy crap it is hot. Every day Janice & Dan have been in Colorado it has topped 100 degrees and while the AC is (thankfully) working in the trailer, everything else is really starting to heat up. Sure, it might be a dry heat but so is your oven on full blast. Living in a campground that's cooking under an unrelenting sun brings in some odors. And some of them are starting to come from the trailer itself. Plus, the whole family beats the heat by going bowling and that gets Janice & Dan thinking back to how they first met. You want their origin story? It involves Mexican wrestling, cuts of meat, and bowling.
