The OTHER party heads to the Dead Marshes.
Fifty years ago on September 2, one of the most important authors of the twentieth century passed away. While most today know his amazing works of fantasy and fiction, J.R.R. Tolkien was long recognized in academic circles as a brilliant philologist and scholar of medieval literature. For example, his essay on Beowulf, written in 1936, reshaped scholarship around the poem and remains highly influential today. It was in the following year that the world was first introduced to Middle Earth. The Hobbit was quickly recognized as a wonderful children's book. But The Lord of the Rings series that followed initially earned a mixed reception. C.S. Lewis and W.H. Auden, among others, quickly saw its genius, but many critics dismissed it as an overblown fairy tale, a contribution to a literary genre out of favor among modernist critics who favored “realistic” literature that dealt with the angst of the mid-twentieth century. Tolkien, however, believed that the world, and Britain in particular, needed something else. Over the last few decades, Tolkien studies have blossomed into an important field. His popularity soared with Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, and more significantly, people have been exploring the philosophical ideas behind Tolkien's legendarium. The full scope of Tolkien's vision has been made available thanks to the indefatigable work of his son Christopher, who analyzed and edited the many manuscripts Tolkien left behind. We now have a fuller picture of his writing process and the creative vision behind Middle Earth, as well as the intellectual influences that informed Tolkien. Some of these influences are well known, including Beowulf and Norse and Germanic mythology. A linguist, Tolkien invented entire languages based on Finnish and Welsh, as well as several writing systems to go along with them. A philologist, he studied language as a window into culture, which led him to develop both history and culture to go with his newly invented languages. From this effort came the amazing world of Middle Earth. Tolkien also drew on his own life story in crafting his stories. His description of the Dead Marshes and Mordor were inspired by his experience in the trenches in World War I. Also, Sam and Frodo's relationship was based on Tolkien's experience as an officer with his batman, an enlisted man who served as a personal assistant. As a boy, Tolkien spent several years in the Birmingham area where he grew to love the English countryside and to hate industrialization. This obviously shaped his descriptions of the Shire and the ecological concerns in the legendarium. On a literary level, this connected him with British romanticism, a movement that emphasized beauty, imagination, and God. In fact, as Austin Freeman pointed out in a recent interview on the Upstream podcast, Tolkien explained that to understand his writing, one had to remember he was a British romantic and a Christian. The significance of Christianity to Middle Earth is a matter of some controversy. Tolkien himself wrote, “‘The Lord of the Rings' is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work.” Critics have scoffed at this, pointing out that there is little hint of religious practice in The Lord of the Rings nor any of the distinctive doctrines of Christianity. In some Tolkien fandoms, discussion of Tolkien's faith is forbidden, as if his work can be understood apart from the author. However, there are clear Christian influences on the story, even if not intentional. When someone pointed out that the three offices of Christ—prophet, priest, and king—were embodied by Gandalf, Frodo, and Aragorn, Tolkien responded that though it was not intentional, his Christian beliefs would inevitably come out in his writing. More recent scholarship, such as Bradley Birzer's J.R.R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth, has revealed the profound Christian ideas at the root of Tolkien's work. Jonathan McIntosh's The Flame Imperishable argues that Tolkien's creation myth was shaped by the metaphysical ideas of Thomas Aquinas. Austin Freeman's Tolkien Dogmatics looks at Middle Earth through the lens of systematic theology and identifies important elements of Christian belief embodied there. Tolkien, of course, was never preachy, which is why his Christianity is so easily and often missed. However, as he explained in a letter, “[The] religious element is absorbed into the story and symbolism.” Still, Tolkien's stories speak to profound truths about the world, and thus, can, in C.S. Lewis's words, “steal past those watchful dragons” of modernity. This Breakpoint was co-authored by Dr. Glenn Sunshine. And we're back! Following up on our promise to continue the LOTR saga in 2023, this month we're taking a fresh look at The Two Towers. It's the second in the trilogy, which can be seen as a hindrance - no start and no end - but Toy Story 2 and Godfather 2 make good arguments for middle films. Trek with us through the horror of the Dead Marshes and the endless beauty of New Zealand, but don't forget to bring your condiments!
The second film of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy hit movie screens twenty years ago this month. While the first was a major hit for New Line Cinema the year before, the success of the second installment was no sure thing. Star Trek: Nemesis was opening the week before, and the Christmas frame included new films from Spike Lee, Martin Scorcese, and Steven Spielberg. There was also the issue of the film's title with its cryptic reference to twin towers just a year after 9/11. Nevertheless, it proved to be a major hit that outperformed the first film on opening weekend and would finish as the highest-grossing release of 2002 - ahead of Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Men in Black, and James Bond. Now we're headed back to Middle-earth for some more sightseeing - look, there's Helm Deep! The Dead Marshes! Fangorn Forest! And The Two Towers! Frodo and Sam have passed the Dead Marshes with the help of Sméagol, went to the Black Gate of Mordor and found it impassable, decided on an alternate route, and coincidentally ran into men of Gondor, the captain being Boromir's brother Faramir who succeeded in what Boromir failed. Thanks for sticking with us as today we tackle the final five chapters and finish The Two Towers in it's entirety by covering The Forbidden Pool through The Choices of Master Samwise. Keep up as we stay with Frodo & Sam as they receive the blessing of Faramir to leave the temporary safety of Ithilien with Sméagol and continue their journey, view the evil city of Minas Morgul where the King of the Wraiths resides with an army set for war, climb along the secret pass to a tunnel, fall into a trap, fight for their lives against an ancient evil, and Sam having to make seemingly impossible choices. With Chase & Josh providing the major takeaways from each chapter, notating key full circles and foreshadows, pointing out a potential plot hole, coming up with our own draft of who each of us would take in a Fellowship re-do of who goes on the journey from Rivendell, and debating some fun scenarios, don't miss out! "He spun round, and rushed wildly up the path, calling and calling his master's name. He was too late. So far Gollum's plot had succeeded."
In this essay, Bryan recalls a frightening night where he was lost in a swamp as a teenager. Reflection and journaling helped him to more fully understand this event and others. Reflection and journaling have been a big part of Bryan's adulthood and in this essay, he offers insights into the practice of both. We hope you will enjoy this episode entitled, “Alone in the Dead Marshes,” written by Dr. Bryan Gill and read to you by Brad Hill. “No Man is an Island.” No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Book IV of The Lord of the Rings follows Frodo and Sam as they slowly journey towards the Land of Mordor. After leaving the Fellowship behind, they become lost as they wander through the wilderness. Gollum has been pursuing them at length, and finally comes to them as they wander. Rather than hiding or attacking, they take him in as their guide. Gollum guides them eagerly through the Dead Marshes and to the Black Gate, however they soon realize they will need to enter Mordor through a different path. Gollum tells them of a different, secret path which will lead them through a tunnel…
Frodo and Sam follow their travel guide Gollum through the Dead Marshes — it's not the tour package we would have chosen, but who are we to judge? — and are far more shaken up than Gollum is by the fact that the marshes actually have, y'know, dead in them. But never mind the terrifying things below, because there's a new terrifying thing above making its appearance, and that one is going to get Gollum pretty shaken up indeed. Also, just in time for the holidays, a new installment of Kingly Gifts, with Tolkien Collector's Guide moderator Andrew Ferguson.

No matter how much of a casual or die-hard fan you are, if you want to have a good time, this is the podcast for you! On the episode this week we discuss one of the creepiest and most mysterious locations in Middle-earth - The Dead Marshes. We see these wetlands fantastically portrayed in Peter Jackson's depiction and it gives us some idea of what this area could have looked like. But what happened here before the events of Lord of the Rings? Who were the dead people in the water? Why did the dead light candles? And why was Frodo drawn to them? We answer these questions and take a look at other events and wars that led to this wasteland getting its famous name - The Dead Marshes! As always, you'll be greatly entertained with some fun facts, interesting tidbits, music and funny soundbites! Please get in touch with us on social media! Ahh it's a beautiful day in Middle Earth, the sun is shining over the Dead Marshes, the horses are running wild in Edoras, the Orcs are marching to Helm's Deep, and Friday Island's very own Sam and Frodo (Zach and Neil) are discussing The Two Towers! How did they master the motion capture for Gollum? What differences were made between the book and the movie? And what went into creating the Ent, Treebeard? Grab your armor, saddle up, and prepare your weapons, we've got some Orcs to kill!
Gollum gives a tour of the Dead Marshes, which is full of ghouls, evil intent and, possibly worse - it really really stinks. And Gandalf is back from the great beyond! He brings great light and hope, but stresses that he is color-coded differently this time. No one else understands what he means.

Dear Friends, Frodo, Sam, and Gollum cross the Dead Marshes. It is an unbelievably depressing process.....HEAR ALL ABOUT IT HERE! Please enjoy and send to a friend. Thank you for listening!
The Passage of the Marshes - Walking by night, and hiding by day, Frodo, Sam, and Gollum brave the Dead Marshes. Frodo and Sam are able to eat the lembas provided by the Elves, but this food causes Gollum to choke, so he finds his own food, to the disgust of Sam. They must pick their way carefully through the marshes, avoiding the little lights that seem to flicker like lit candles. Frodo falls, and must be rescued from a pool of muddy water. When he is helped up, he describes seeing faces of corpses. Gollum tells them there was once a great battle here, in which Orcs, Men, and Elves fought, and the graves are now covered in the marsh. At several points, a dark, winged shape flies overhead, inspiring terror in Gollum. After the marshes, they emerge into a dead landscape, and Frodo and Sam get some much-needed sleep. Sam, half awake, overhears Gollum having a conversation with himself, as if the Gollum part of him, ruined by desire for the Ring, disagrees with the Sméagol side, who retains some of his pre-Ring personality. The Sméagol side doesn't want to violate the oath to help Frodo, but the Gollum side answers, "She might help. She might, yes." Sam isn't sure what this means, but he definitely trusts Gollum less and less as time goes on.
The Taming of Sméagol - While Aragorn and Company have been chasing Orcs and fighting Saruman's army, Frodo and Sam have been making their way toward Mordor. They come to a cliff and must use a rope to scale down it. As they do so, they see Gollum is still following them, and Sam decides to ambush him. Sam and Gollum wrestle, but Gollum is surprisingly strong, so Frodo intervenes, threatening Gollum with Sting. In Sam's opinion, they should tie Gollum up and leave him to die. But Frodo doesn't think this would be right. Suddenly, Gollum makes an escape attempt, but Frodo and Sam capture him and tie him up with the Elven rope. However, the rope seems to hurt Gollum, and he begs them to take it off. They do, but not before they exact an oath from Gollum to help them get to Mordor. They head off toward the Dead Marshes with Gollum (also called Sméagol) acting as guide.
Don't follow the lights! Our quest reaches the treacherous Dead Marshes as the pursuit of the creature Gollum continues. The endless dank wetlands prove strangely homely as Em stares into the void and John attempts to rectify his past mistakes. In this episode, we talk about what Gandalf and his knowledge of the One Ring. Why doesn’t Gandalf know right away that Bilbo has Sauron’s ring? How did he figure it out? How did the ring get to a place where Gollum could find it? We talk about the dwarven rings, the One Ring’s effects on mortals, the Council of Elrond, the public library system of Gondor, and what would happen if Gandalf put on the One Ring while wearing the elvish ring that he already has. Short answer: it would be bad. In other news, Dan makes fun of Peter Jackson. 1:05 - Bilbo finding the ring - Riddle party! 3:35 - How does Gandalf not know it’s the One? 4:48 - Dwarf boats are barrels 5:12 - Back to Gandalf not knowing if it’s the One ring or not... 5:30 - Rings granting invisibility 5:43 - Greater/lesser rings 6:00 - I said Eregon. I meant Eregion. Those are different things. I blame the rye. -Erica 6:35 - How did the ring get here? 7:09 - Isildur’s bane 7:54 - Hobbit susceptibility to rings 8:07 - Dwarf rings 8:20 - I said that Sauron didn’t know about the 3 elven rings. He actually knows about all of them, but he doesn’t know where they are. The people that have the elf rings can use them, but the more dramatic the use, the more noticeable they make themselves. When the fellowship is crossing Caradhras, Gandalf uses the power of his ring to start a fire. He mentions that everyone knows exactly where he is when he does it. - Erica 8:40 - Back to the Dwarves - Gold! Madness! 9:00 - Dan is making fun of Peter Jackson. 10:00 - Thorin’s family, gold sickness, and the dwarf rings 10:53 - Why does Sauron want the dwarf rings? 11:15 - Dain putting the Mouth of Sauron on hold / Council of Elrond 12:15 - The fireplace at Bag End 12:30 - Effects of rings on mortals 12:51 - One ring is for enslaving others - Bilbo wants to live in peace and plant potatoes and dream #Moomin 13:10 - #notallhobbits 13:42 - Erica fangirls over Sam very briefly 14:20 - Sauron and Gollum 15:50 - Aragorn found Gollum in the Dead Marshes and was working with Gandalf 16:00 - Gollum did some bad stuff in Mirkwood, ended up prison breaking out of Thranduil's dungeon. Bilbo was able to escape from Thranduil with a baker’s dozen of dwarves in barrels and Gollum was able to get away because they let him out to climb trees. I don’t think he’s really that keen on keeping people prisoner… 17:00 - Gollum is why Legolas is at the Council of Elrond 17:20 - The gap between the party and Frodo leaving for Rivendell is 17 years 17:58 - Gandalf at Bilbo’s party - Great rings extending life (one book into three movies) 19:45 - Gandalf’s research in Minas Tirith - Erica looks at the actual book to confirm. - Isildur and the fire letters. #research #soproud 21:15 - Keep it secret, keep it safe, y’all! 21:44 - Gandalf and the big bucket of NOPE! 22:44 - Why did Gandalf know to go to minas tirith? - Minas Tirith is smart and funds their public library system to maintain the Isildur Archives #primarysources 23:25 - Frodo leaving the Shire (If Gandalf isn’t back by this time = September) - Nazgûl word problems - Saruman doesn’t care 25:37 - What if Gandalf put on the ring to be sure it’s the One? Is it like like drinking the clear liquid in the chemistry Lab? What you thought was H2O was H2SO4! 26:50 - Gandalf touches the ring in the book, but not in the movies. Artistic license! 27:37 - Sauron’s involvement in ring making 27:54 - I said Eregon again. Still meant Eregion. Erica is facepalming so hard. 28:48 - Rings and invisibility again, who turns invisible and who doesn’t? 30:40 - Sam also turned invisible 31:04 - Sauron can’t change shape because of the fall of Númenor. 31:34 - Shadow of Mordor, when Sauron is Celebrimbor’s ring coach, he looks like an elf lord (Annatar, Lord of Gifts) because it’s before the fall of Númenor 32:28 - The short version of the fall of Númenor.

In this session, we cross the Dead Marshes and discuss the second chapter of book four of The Lord of the Rings!
In Chapter 4 of The Hobbit, our heroes begin the crossing of the mountains under threat of stormy weather and rock-hurling stone-giants. They seek shelter in a cave, but caves up in the mountains are seldom unoccupied, and this one is no exception. We investigate the nature of the mysterious stone-giants, a new Philology Faire segment unveils surprises in Tolkien’s original conception of Treebeard, and we get a little spooky for a listener question about the Dead Marshes.
Tolkien describes the dead marshes like this in The Two Towers: "Dreary and wearisome. Cold, clammy winter still held sway in this forsaken country. The only green was the scum of livid weed on the dark greasy surfaces of the sullen waters. Dead grasses and rotting reeds loomed up in the mists like ragged shadows of long-forgotten summers." You can smell the staleness of the air, you can feel the icy chill of death as it slowly seeps into your bones when you read this passage. For me, the imagery of the marshes: dreary, sullen, and ragged is an excellent metaphor for those times when we lose motivation. When we enter this area, our thoughts become dreary, and our bodies and minds are easily fatigued. Like Frodo, entranced by the faces of the dead in the murky waters, we're easily pulled down into the depths of demotivation. These desolate, shallow, murky waters are never easy to get out of once we allow ourselves to sink in. So how do you escape these marshes? That's what I cover in this episode.

Frodo, Sam, and Gollum journey through the Dead Marshes, encountering some unusual excitement along the way.
When we think of wetlands, most of us see them as ghostly swamps where spiders have huge webs that look like banshee in veils, or the dangerous Dead Marshes through which Gollum led Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. However, wetlands are not at all these dangerous, murky, smelly, marshy areas. In fact they are the most cheerful places full of life and activity. It’s where life gravitates to, where human settlements started and where wildlife will gravitate around as well. These marshes, swamps and lagoons are a critical part of our natural environment. Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world comparable to rain forests and coral reefs. But sadly today, they are disappearing 3 times faster than our forests. A meagre 6% of the Earth’s surface is covered by wetlands whereas 31% of the earth’s surface still has forests. And yet people don’t seem to appreciate them in the same way, don’t love them as much as forests. They are hardly considered even important. In this episode, a young wildlife presenter and film-maker, Aishwarya Sridhar from India, talks to Mr. Debi Goenka and Mr. Nikhil Bhopale about the importance of wetland eco-systems in a world plagued by climate crisis. Mr. Goenka has been working towards the protection of mangroves and wetlands for over 35 years of his life. He is the executive trustee of Conservation Action Trust (a non-governmental organisation in India) engaged in environmental protection and he’s the force behind the recent policy protecting the Indian mangroves. On the other hand, Mr. Nihil Bhopale is an educationist, conservationist and an author, having written a book on the birds of the Indian subcontinent. He is the founder of Green Works Trust, an NGO pioneering environmental education in India. They discuss the role of wetlands, the crisis facing them and the need to protect them urgently.
