Landaas & Company newsletter January edition now available. Advisors on This Week’s Show BOB LANDAAS KYLE TETTING BRIAN KILB (with Max Hoelzl, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (Jan. 4-8, 2021) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday The U.S. housing recovery boosted construction spending to another all-time high in November. The Commerce Department said construction expenditures rose 0.9%, to an annual rate of $1.46 trillion, a month after eclipsing the previous record, which was set before the pandemic. Spending on residential construction rose 2.6% from the October rate and 16.2% from November 2019. Excluding housing, construction spending declined 0.6% in November. Tuesday The Institute for Supply Management reported that its manufacturing index signaled expansion in December for the seventh month in a row and at the fastest pace since mid-2018. Based on surveys of purchasing managers, the index showed production at its highest level in 10 years. Three in four survey respondents expressed optimism about their businesses, despite reconfigurations in operations forced by the pandemic. Some manufacturers complained of rising staffing constraints as they struggled to bring back employees or recruit new hires. Wednesday A report from the Commerce Department showed manufacturing orders gaining in November for the seventh month in a row, though they were still down 1.9% from February, before widespread pandemic shutdowns. The value of orders rose 1% from October, down from 1.3% gains in both September and August. Excluding volatile orders for transportation equipment, orders rose 0.8% for the month. A proxy for business investments reached a record high for the second month in a row. Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims declined for the first time in five weeks but remained nearly four times the level just before the pandemic. Average claims were at 818,750, up from a 51-year low of 208,000 in February. Prior to pandemic, the high was 695,000. The Labor Department said 19.2 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits, more than 10 times the 1.8 million recipients at the same time the year before. The U.S. trade deficit grew 8% in November, just below its widest gap on record, which was set in August 2006. The $68.1 billion deficit, which detracts from gross domestic product, resulted from the value of imports rising at a faster rate than exports. Imports were up 2.9% from October, while exports rose 1.2%. Year to year, the trade gap rose 13.9% with imports down 10.5% and exports down 16.1%. The U.S. services sector continued expanding in December, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The trade group’s services index showed the seventh consecutive month of growth following setbacks in April and May. The pace of expansion accelerated from the November index. However, the employment component contracted as more purchasing managers complained of staffing constraints, especially with recent surges in COVID-19 cases. Friday The U.S. economic recovery staggered in Decembers as employers cut 140,000 jobs, according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job level remained 9.8 million or 6.5% below where it was in February, on par with employment more than five years ago. Hardest hit were jobs in the leisure and hospitality industry, private education and state and local government. The same report showed the unemployment rate steady at 6.7%, which was down from 14.8% in April but much higher than the 3.5% mark set in February. Household surveys showed growing numbers of long-term unemployed, permanent job losers and people suspending their job searches. Nearly 16 million said they were unable to work because the pandemic closed or otherwise reduced their employer’s business. The Federal Reserve reported that consumer credit card debt fell in November for the eighth time in nine months.

Conductor Adam Turner recently became the Artistic Director and Conductor for Virginia Opera, making him one of the youngest AD's in the American opera world. This is his third time at the helm for Jake Heggie's Three Decembers, and in this interview he reflects on the piece, on chamber opera generally, and on his career. Enjoy this fifth and final interview of the principals in this production!
Director Karen Tiller has directed Three Decembers three times now, and obviously loves this opera by Jake Heggie. In this interview she talks about her love for the piece as well as for her deep appreciation for its connection between drama, text and music. At the heart of the matter, she says, the message of this opera is that "life is messy", a direct quote from the libretto. Spend a few minutes with this artist and you'll see why we're so excited to present this opera, opening March 8th!
Soprano Kristin Clayton has had quite an eclectic career so far...singing roles like Mimi and Violetta, plus singing new roles and including working with a circus! She originated the role of Beatrice in Heggie's Three Decembers, and has an affinity for this wonderful character who is searching for memories of her father, being protective of her brother Charlie and dealing with the sometimes present, sometimes absent mother, Maddy. Join us for this fun conversation with a San Diego Opera debut artist!
Baritone Steven LaBrie sings the role of Charlie in Jake Heggie's opera Three Decembers. Charlie is the gay son of Madeline Mitchell (mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade) and brother of Bea (soprano Kristin Clayton) in this intimate family drama. Steven hails from Dallas and has a charming story about his attraction to opera and, eventually, to singing as a career, in this lively interview in which he talks about his career and this wonderful chamber opera. Enjoy!
We already know what a delightful person and great artist Frederica von Stade is. We're welcoming her back to San Diego Opera in the role of Madeline Mitchell, the central character in Jake Heggie's Three Decembers. In this interview she talks about the opera and her role in it, with an additional few words about opera composer Dominick Argento who passed away just a few days before this interview (aged 91) and composed some lovely music for this singer. A wonderful few minutes with a charming lady! Enjoy!

Other than my interviews with Jesse, this was my very first interview to do in-person -- with Myquillyn Smith (aka The Nester) sitting right across the table from me as we recorded. I loved getting to chat with her face-to-face and be inspired by her heart for creating a cozy and inviting home that serves your family well. Myquillyn and I talk about the importance of making your home into a place that fits the way you’re called to use it, and she offers practical advice for women who may feel intimidated or insecure about decorating. If you’ve ever wanted your home to be a cozy, welcoming place, but aren’t sure where to start, you don't want to miss this episode! (And while I'm not much of a decorator at all -- as I talk about on this episode! -- I surprised myself by truly being inspired by her book. Listen in as I share more on that!) I also give you some last-minute tips for simplifying December, tell you one of our favorite Christmas traditions when our kids were younger, and share some of our favorite Christmas read-alouds for younger kids. And I close out the show by sharing some encouragement from my heart to moms of littles. If you currently have babies, toddlers, or younger kids and maybe feel a little overwhelmed by this season of life, I hope that my words will inspire you and help you feel less alone! In This Episode: [01:34] - Our Christmas Bucket List is what's saving my life this week! This simple practice makes our Decembers so much simpler, calmer, and fun-filled. [06:54] - Instead of just one book, this week I tell you about some of our family's favorite Christmas picture books. [07:50] - Today's guest is Myquillyn Smith -- a woman who is well known on the internet for encouraging people to love their homes and that "it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful". [10:16] - I asked Myquillyn to share advice for women who have insecurities or fears when it comes to decorating their homes (because this is 100% me -- I was even insecure about having Myquillyn come to my home and had to talk myself out of that before she got there!) [15:17] - One of the things I often hear from women is that they wish they could redecorate or change some things in their home but they are on a really tight budget. We talk about this and Myquillyn shares some of her best tips for loving your home and making it cozy and welcoming -- on a tight budget. [17:45] - We talk about what it's like to be an introvert and how to step out and do scary things in spite of our fears. Myquillin addresses my question on how she has managed to invite 1000 people to her home for a festival and go on book tour. She shares how it's been for her and why she chose to do this, even though she knew it would be a lot. [21:58] - Myquillyn shares three books she's planning to read soon -- two of which have been on my radar screen and that I promptly ordered after she talked about them! [23:04] - And we talk about none other than baths. Yes, for real! You'll have to tune in to find out why! :) [24:45] - Many listeners have written in to ask about my advice for a first-time mom. I share some of my best advice and encouragement -- that I wish I would have learned early on! Links and Resources: Twigby (this episode’s amazing sponsor!) Welcome to episode 67 of Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels: Star Wars of Decembers Past. On this episode, the Scoundrels are looking back at the Star Wars movies of past Decembers. Although there isn't a new Star Wars movie this winter, it is still fun to look back at the last three holiday releases. Star Wars News Things were fairly quite in the realm of Star Wars news. However, Harrison Ford is receiving an award, and Star Wars Celebration Chicago announced their first guest. The Scoundrels discuss these stories in this week's coverage of the news. NOTE: The news of the new live action series featuring Cassian Andor broke the day after the Scoundrels recorded this episode. Although it is covered briefly in this episode, we'll cover it in more depth on episode 68. Star Wars of Decembers Past Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Star Wars became a staple of the holiday season. However, that tradition is on a temporary hiatus in 2018. With no new Star Wars film to look forward to next month, Dennis, Jay, and Darth Taxus revisit the Star Wars movies of the last three Decembers: The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi. They revisit the hype and promotion of the films leading up to their release. They'll reflect on some of the twists and surprises from the movies as well. It is a fun trip down memory lane, so join the Scoundrels for the fun. Silence Fools! Silence Fools!, the listener feedback portion of the show, features an email from a listener as he shares some posters related to Maul: Lockdown. The Scoundrels also cover episode 66's Twitter poll results and propose a new poll. Thanks for tuning into episode 67 of Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels: Star Wars of Decembers Past. We hope you enjoyed our look back at the recent Star Wars movies in December. Social Media, Email, and More Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels is a bi-weekly show that features three first-generation Star Wars fans. Each episode, RetroZappers Dennis Keithly, Jay Krebs, and Darth Taxus offer their hot space opinions on Star Wars news. Then, they engage in Star Wars discussion in the "Hyperthetical" segment. Top ten lists, book reviews, Rebels discussion, and interviews are all on the table. After the Hyperthetical, each episode features listener feedback with Silence Fools! Dennis Keithly can be followed @DJKver2, Darth Taxus is @DarthTaxus, and Jay Krebs is @JoyceKrebs. SCubedPod thrives on listener feedback. Therefore, Dennis, Taxus, and Jay would love to read your email on the show. To reach them, email the show at SCubedPod@RetroZap.com. For instance, have an opinion on Star Wars comics, Rebels, or the comics? We want to hear it. Also, have a question about some Star Wars detail? Send it to us! It doesn't have to be Star Wars. Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels T-Shirts can be purchased here. Finally, Dennis, Taxus, and Jay would appreciate an iTunes review for the show. Thank you.
Jake Heggie's connection with Frederica Von Stade is well known, and this was the first complete operatic role that he created for her. We are honored that Ms. Von Stade will be with us again, along with this challenging work about family...the relationships we have as opposed to the ones we wish we had. Enjoy this conversation with General Director David Bennett!
Released in consecutive Decembers beginning in 2001, Peter Jackson’s colossal adaptation of Tolkien’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy reached its conclusion in 2003 with "The Return of the King" which went on to win 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Despite enjoying the first installment just fine, Adam never made time for "Two Towers" or "Return," which didn't stop him from spending much of the last fifteen years taking digs at the films and the people who loved them (people like Josh). But with 2019's Filmspotting Madness (Best of the 2000s) on the horizon - just past the Misty Mountains, in fact - Adam agreed to knock out his Hobbity blindspots with an epic (re)consideration of the trilogy in which he and Josh discuss the horror elements in the trilogy, the care with which Jackson depicts the cost of war and the greatness of Ian McKellen (and the rest of the brilliantly cast ensemble). Plus a Top 5 Scenes from the trilogy that illustrates how Jackson, in bringing the trilogy to life, was just as attentive to the subtle, quiet moments as he was the epic battle scenes. 0:00-2:32 - Intro 3:08-41:51 - "The Lord of the Rings" Howard Shore, "The End of All Things" 44:07-51:32 - Next Week / Notes 51:32-59:43 - Polls (Best of Brolin / Taking Over an Iconic Role) Howard Shore, "The Prophecy" 1:01:54-1:42:39 - Top 5: "Lord of the Rings" Scenes 1:42:39-1:46:55 - Close / Outtake Learn more about your ad choices.
December is my most reflective month. The end of the year. Another trip around the sun for me. The first flakes of snow and bitter cold in the lungs. Life quiets down and speeds up at the same time. The mayhem of the holidays mixed with cuddling in front of a fire with those you love. You want to look to the future. To plan for the next year. Determine your three words, say all the things you are going to do, promise to make the next twelve months better than the last. The only thing I know about 2018 is that the first months will be spent as a Visiting Professor at Wheaton College. Earlier this week I met with one of my students and I’m excited to be in the classroom again. I also have a writing deadline at the end of February which is clearly in focus at the moment. But, after that, there is nothing on the calendar. No major milestones. No contracts of work to do. A blank canvas. That scares me. The lizard brain screams about impending doom. Then calmer instincts roll in and remind me that this is the path I walk. This is no different than past Decembers when I try to keep the two wolves balanced out and not let either of them feast. Next week I’ll receive the best birthday gift when my son returns from his first semester of college. I’m proud of the work he has put in this semester so far from home. The challenges he has faced and his own wolves that have howled at him as he grows into the man he wants to become. There is nothing quite like clearing your head on a cold winter day. To take deep, meaningful breaths of air that sting your lungs. To be blinded by the sunlight off the sparkling white snow in front of you. To enjoy the stillness as a pond ices over before your eyes and the only noise is the whisper of the wind through the trees. These moments are the ones I cherish. I stood for a long time looking out over a lake earlier this week. My photography plans for the day sidelined by technology, but being a roll with the moment guy I decided to use it to center myself a bit. To balance out the swirl of voices in my head and remind myself that everything finds a way to work out in the end. A grin is on my face as I ponder how this might come across as sad, but I know it isn’t. When I think back to several Decembers ago and the darkest days I’ve seen, I know this isn’t sad. In fact, I am in the most upbeat of spirits. There are so many opportunities ahead for all of us. From the sea of hate and frustration, I have to believe that enough joy rebels, radical artists and passion hits will rise to turn the tide to something good. Spending the month of November working on my first novel that I set in the not so distant future allowed me to paint the worse case scenario based on our current climate. It was dark, disturbing and at times was painful for me to create. Yet, even in the midst of this world I created, there was hope and life went on. Life is going on right now. Babies are being born. Art is being created. Work is being done. The whirlpool of anger can suck all of us in and all we will do is scream at the social streams we swim in too often. Taking even a few hours away from the screens and living will remind you that we don’t need the constant guzzling of information. Light snow falls outside my office window as the first light of morning arrives. Today is another day. noC.C. Chapmanmarketing, public, rel

Oops, we did it again, we're coming in HOT on this second episode of Decembers. It gets VERY political. Bit of an odd episode here. We apologize to those we offend. This is what December is all about though, having tough discussions. Anyway, Happy December 2nd, and as always feel free to email us at StephenMayNut@Gmail.com with any of your December questions or comments. If we stop messing around for long enough we may even get to your question. LOVE YOU! THANKS!

One features Jen (the cake is a lie), one features Luke (who’s too young for a decaf nightcap), and both raise a great question: why did I say that?! While We Have Her™, Phyllis also tells us what it was like in the newsroom on Election Night, from the cliché whiskey to her Reverse Driveway Moment. Plus, Mouth Sounds! Public Service Announcement: This episode features an occasional use of the word “moist,” in relation to Jen’s baking tips. You have been warned. In fact, as an apology, if you’re one of the first 20 people to send and email to littleredbandwagon (at) gmail (dot) com with the word “moist” in the subject line, Christy will send you an LRB sticker as soon as she finishes gagging. Thanks! This episode features TBTL clips from Dec. 8, 2008, hour 2 and Dec. 8, 2014, episode 1747.

Story 1 - Buying Your First Pair of Snowshoes What should you look for when buying your first pair of snowshoes. First, you'll need to answer these fundamental questions: Where do you want to go? How steep will the terrain be? How deep with the snow be? Will it be powder or packed? Are you looking to walk or run? Answering these questions will make it easier for store clerks to match you with the right snowshoe for the types of outings that you are most often going to be undertaking. Like cross-country skis, there are snowshoes designed for a wide variety of terrains and activities so finding the right match is critical. In time, you may find that you want a pair for tracked conditions, another for deep powder and maybe even a third pair for steep ascents. For now, though focus on your main goals when buying your first pair. If this all sounds confusing, there is a pretty good way to test the waters without investing in the purchase of new equipment - you can choose to take a guided snowshoe program, or you can rent some snowshoes and try them out on your own. Most guided snowshoe tours will provide the snowshoes for the day so you can get an introduction into the sport while at the same time testing some snowshoes. Here at Ward Cameron Enterprises, we would love to take you out into Kananaskis Country or Banff and help you get a feel for this incredible sport. We have all the gear you need as long as you have good winter clothing and a sturdy pair of snow boots. Drop us a line a info@wardcameron.com if you'd like to learn more about our early season packages. Story 2 - The Crowds...they are a Comin' 2017 represents Canada's 150th birthday. In celebration, the federal government has decided to make entry into all Canadian national parks completely free of charge for the entire year. This is a bad decision that should be reversed immediately. Banff and Jasper National Parks are already operating way beyond capacity. Adding another several hundred thousand visitors into the mix is simply poor management of our parks. Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen slammed parks for making decisions that affect the town without offering any consultation or assistance to deal with the huge influx of vehicles that the town will need to accommodate next year. Story 3 - Super Duper Moon This month has a number of astronomical delights for those of us that like to watch the night sky. Topping the list is tomorrow's Super Duper Moon. A supermoon is defined as a full moon that takes place during those months where the moon is at its closest approach to the Earth. We've had several of the 'super' moons this year. Last month's full moon was a super moon and so will Decembers, but no moon in the past 68 years will be as large or as bright as the one on November 14, 2016. I know this is short notice, but if you listen to this be sure to check out the sky tomorrow for a spectacular show, weather permitting. The next time you'll be able to see a similarly dramatic supermoon will be November of 2034, so don't forget to mark your calendar. This week also marks the peak of the annual Leonid Meteor Shower so if you're up in the early hours of November 17 and have a clear view to the east and can wait for the moon to dip behind the horizon, you may have an opportunity to see between 10-20 meteors each hour.

David is the Betty R. Miller Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and department chair at Cornell. He specializes in organometallic chemistry with a particular expertise in the organic chemistry of lithium. David is an avid student of markets, economics, and geopolitics and writes a Year in Review posted at Peak Prosperity and Zerohedge. Dave has been cited in the Wall Street Journal and The Guardian and has appeared on Russia Today. What were the 3 biggest events in 2015 (or building over the last few years) that you think will have a big impact on 2016? What’s your long range prognosis? This is your 7th year in review that you’ve produced. What have you learned over that time from doing this incredible amount of informational synthesis every year? Do you dread Decembers yet? :) What have you gotten most wrong? How did you get started and what insight has being an organic chemistry professor at Cornell given you? I love that at the beginning of every review, you include how your personal portfolio is positioned. There are so many voices out there sharing their opinions in the financial world, but we never know if they have any real real conviction behind what they’re saying. It drives me nuts. Why are you willing to be so transparent and show your personal skin in the game? You have roughly 20% of your net worth in precious metals. I found the fervor both for and against gold to be almost religious in nature. What are your thoughts about gold?
This week in episode 56 of the Informed Choice Podcast, Martin talks about selling your pension annuity, pretending to be rich, and some of the things that could go wrong for investment markets in 2016. There’s also a roundup of the latest news from the world of personal finance and investing. In the personal finance and investing new roundup this week: Price inflation in the UK is back in positive territory, with the Consumer Prices Index, CPI, measure of price inflation rising to 0.1% in the year to November. HM Treasury have confirmed it will be possible to sell a pension annuity for a cash lump sum from April 2017 onwards. The first tranche of National Savings & Investments, NS&I, 65+ Bonds are due to mature in January and savers could see their interest rates cut in half. The Work and Pensions committee of MPs have launched an investigation into pension auto enrolment and its impact on smaller employers. The US Federal Reserve has increased its key interest rate for the first time in nine years, in a move welcomed by the stock markets. Main topics Should you sell your pension annuity back to the provider in return for cash which you can then access under the new pension freedom rules? HM Treasury have now confirmed that, from April 2017 onwards, it will be possible to sell your pension annuity in return for a cash lump sum. This move is designed to extend the pension freedoms introduced earlier this year to pension annuities. But will doing this offer good value to consumers? What protections will be put in place by the government? What might go wrong for global investment markets in 2016? It’s not been the best of Decembers so far for investment markets. Investors often benefit from a so-called Santa Rally, which might still come just before Christmas, but it’s been a poor end to the year for equity markets so far. An article from Bloomberg describes ten scenarios which could be bad news for investors next year, based on the views of former and current diplomats, geopolitical strategists, security consultants, and economists. Have you ever pretended to be rich? A new article from Business Insider claims too many people are pretending to be rich. It looks at a couple in their seventies who have put away virtually nothing for their retirement, because they spent their working lives pretending to be rich. The author concludes that a balanced financial life that involves living within your means includes things like saving for retirement. Help us spread the word! Decembers første vinder i Trailcasts julekonkurrence blev Kim Munk fra København. Kim vil gerne prøve at løbe langt i 2015.

Its also mixed in the fashion I did for the Afterdark Series. In all I hope you enjoy this first of hopefully a few new Anthems + Chilled mixes...
