Jim Hill and Len Testa start with Monstropolis, Disney park capacity, Universal patents, and the sort of tequila event that makes you check whether your Epcot admission is included. Then Jim looks back at Disneyland's very first Grad Nite, held on June 15, 1961, when 8,500 well-dressed seniors were locked inside the park until 4:30 a.m. Along the way, they cover Life magazine's lost photo spread, chaperone lounges, forbidden long hair, and the timeless teenage urge to stash contraband somewhere near Autopia. It is history, logistics, and questionable decision-making, which is to say: high school. NEWS • Monstropolis details reveal “Human Day,” a walking route inspired by Mike and Sulley's commute, and Disney's growing fondness for “you're invited to a special day” ride premises. • Grand Floridian Cafe closes July 19 for refurbishment, raising the important question of whether the menu gets more than new curtains. • La Cava del Tequila hosts a July 14 Epcot event with tastings, cocktails, lunch at San Angel Inn, and a commemorative 1982 menu. • Disneyland restores all-day park hopping, while early signs of DisneylandForward construction point toward a new parking structure and future DCA expansion. • Listener questions cover theme park capacity math, House of Mouse villains, Monstropolis pin trading, and whether Universal's latest patents could make vending machines and park transportation a lot smarter. FEATURE • Jim traces how Disneyland's original Grad Nite grew out of Walt's decision to close Holidayland and Jack Lindquist's search for a new after-hours revenue stream. • The first Grad Nite brought 8,500 students from 28 Southern California high schools to Disneyland for $6 each, or about $67 in today's money. • Life magazine sent four photographers and shot thousands of photos, only to bump the planned spread when the Berlin Wall changed the news cycle. • Disneyland's Grad Nite rules included school buses, dress codes, chaperones, locker checks, planter searches, and haircuts for boys whose hair dared to touch a collar. Welcome back to Capture The Magic! This week we're diving into all the latest Disney World news and there's honestly so much happening right now. First up, Disney just dropped their complete 4th of July food and drink guide and wow, there are some seriously patriotic treats coming our way. We're talking red, white and blue everything across all four parks. Plus we finally got more details about what to expect story-wise when Monstropolis opens at Magic Kingdom. The new land is going to be way more immersive than we initially thought. Speaking of new stuff, Toy Story 5 is bringing some cool passholder perks to Hollywood Studios, and everyone can grab that new Bullseye popcorn bucket. But if you wanted that Lightning McQueen popcorn bucket that just dropped, good luck because it sold out almost immediately. Classic Disney popcorn bucket chaos strikes again. Over at EPCOT, La Poutinerie is opening July 1st and we've got the full menu with pricing. Spoiler alert, it's not exactly budget-friendly but those loaded fries look incredible. And if you've been wanting to do brunch at Citricos, now's your chance since they're moving the Grand Floridian Cafe brunch over there. We're also reviewing those Mickey churro waffles from Spyglass Grill that everyone's been talking about, plus we tried some of the new Bluey treats at Pizzafari. Let's just say one of us was way more excited about Bluey than the other. Plus we're chatting about our recent park experiences including that busy Animation Courtyard, the updated Smuggler's Run experience with Mando and Grogu, and why Soarin' Across America hits different every single time. Make sure to comment with your thoughts on all this Disney World news, smash that like button if you're excited about any of these updates, subscribe if you haven't already, and definitely hit that notification bell so you never miss an episode! Disney and Six Flags both shared details about new projects, and this week, we'll compare them.Disney announced the story behind Monstropolis, the new Monsters, Inc. land coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios. The experience is built around H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice”, a citywide celebration that brings humans into the monster world for the first time. Set after the events of the original film, the story builds on James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski's discovery that human laughter is significantly more powerful than screams.Cast members work as human relations representatives, and the conflict arises from monsters who are not sold on the idea, including those from a Child Detection Agency. Beyond the suspended Monsters, Inc. coaster, Disney detailed a theater show built around H.U.M.A.N. Day that it says uses technology it has never attempted.Theme park lands struggle from a lack of exposition time, and this framing solves that cleanly, while giving guests a solid role in the story. Moreover, it helps cast members answer one question about the guest in front of them: "Who is this parkgoer to me?"Meanwhile, Six Flags Fiesta Texas announced Werewolf Gorge for its 35th anniversary season, a Vekoma family launch coaster opening in 2027 and the longest in park history at 4,120 feet, with four launches and speeds up to 45 mph. Guests are on a tour of an abandoned 19th-century Texas silver mine led by Jasper Bunyan, a roadside showman who has turned the haunted quarry into a tourist trap. Bunyan loads visitors onto a mining train for what he sells as a sightseeing run through the gorge, but the tour turns into a high-speed escape when a centuries-old werewolf curse comes back to life around them. The queue runs through two themed rooms, a Museum of Cryptids and a Werewolf Museum, that set up Bunyan's character and the local legend before riders board. For Six Flags, this is a real step up in storytelling. However, the story lives almost entirely in the queue, with no surrounding land to reinforce it and no role for the guest beyond a tourist on a tour.Listen to weekly BONUS episodes on our Patreon.

Disney, The Muppets, and Jim Henson Disney just closed the Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios to make way for Monstropolis. But while Muppet Vision 3D, Jim Henson's Last Muppet project, is gone, the Muppets aren't leaving Hollywood Studios; they've moved into the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Is this a promotion or a demotion? To understand what's happening today, we have to look back to the deal that almost happened in 1989. In this episode, we explore the history and connection between Jim Henson, George Lucas, and Michael Eisner. We dive into the the handshake between Eisner and Henson that almost changed Disney forever, the tragic timing of Jim Henson's final project, and why it took Disney 14 years to finally close the deal. In this video, we look at: The commonalities between Jim Henson and Walt Disney. The George Lucas bridge that brought Jim Henson to Imagineering. The "Muppet Babies" connection to Marvel and Star Wars. The "Great Muppet Movie Ride" was planned but never built. Why the 1990 TV Special "The Muppets at Walt Disney World" was a bittersweet turning point. The future of the Muppets in film and in the Disney Parks. Joshua Noel and Evan Garcia dive into the swirling chaos of energy crises in the world of Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." and its sequel series "Monsters at Work." They kick things off by pondering whether the power of laughter can truly rival the traditional scare tactics used by the monsters to fuel their city. As they unpack the political undertones in these beloved films, they explore how the monsters' reliance on fear reflects real-world energy debates, drawing parallels to our own struggles with sustainable energy sources. With a mix of insightful commentary and light-hearted banter, Joshua and Evan navigate themes of fear, power, and the implications of transitioning to a laugh-driven economy. So, whether you're a die-hard Pixar fan or just curious about the deeper meanings behind these animated classics, this episode promises to entertain and provoke thought about the energy crises we face both in Monstropolis and our own world. The discussion kicks off with Joshua and Evan diving into the interesting world of Monsters, Inc. and its sequel, Monsters at Work. They ponder whether laughter can truly rival the sheer power of screams, setting the tone for a deep dive into the energy crisis depicted in these films. As they explore the political undertones of these beloved Pixar classics, they highlight how the monsters' reliance on fear reflects real-world issues, such as energy dependence and the exploitation of resources. Joshua and Evan draw parallels between the monsters' fear-driven energy system and contemporary energy crises, emphasizing the societal implications of relying on outdated methods rather than embracing innovation and change. They also touch on the character dynamics, discussing the motivations behind key figures like Waternoose and Randall, and how their actions mirror real-world political figures who manipulate fear for personal gain. As the conversation progresses, Evan shares his nostalgic tie to Monsters, Inc., recounting the joy of watching it as a child and experiencing the thrill of its sequels. Joshua adds his perspective on the animation style and the evolution of the franchise, particularly focusing on how Monsters at Work addresses the ramifications of the previous films' energy crisis. They reflect on the transition from scare tactics to laughter, questioning the stability and sustainability of these energy sources while cleverly weaving humor into their analysis. The episode becomes a fascinating exploration of how animated films can serve as social commentary, illustrating the importance of addressing real-world issues through the lens of entertainment. In the final segment, Joshua and Evan discuss the broader implications of their analysis, considering how the lessons learned from Monsters, Inc. can apply to modern-day energy policies. They challenge listeners to think critically about the narratives surrounding energy production and consumption, urging a move away from fear-based politics towards more sustainable and innovative solutions. By drawing on their insights from the films, they encourage a reevaluation of what it means to power a society, and they advocate for a future where laughter—and laughter-driven energy—triumphs over fear. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of politics, entertainment, and the urgent need for sustainable practices. 👹🚪 ¡MONSTRUOS S.A.! They scare, because they care. But do they? Do they really?Animation Season 2026 kicks off with Pixar's fourth feature, turning 25 years old this year, the incomparable Monsters, Inc.In the world of Monsters, Inc., fear is a power source, and children's screams fuel the world of Monstropolis, which is both clever and a bit dark. This is a bright colourful movie, that cleverly hides its darkness from kids, but adults will see it everywhere.James P. Sullivan, as Monsters Incorporated's number one scarer, has no idea that his world is literally about to be changed by a three-year-old human girl, who finds herself in Monstropolis. His best friend Mike Wazowski is an eyeball with arms and legs who just wants to put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!Originally titled Monsters, Monsters, Inc transformed from the story of an accountant in their 30s reliving childhood fears of monsters, to a story about scaring just being the monsters' day jobs. Neither Sulley nor Mike were in the original pitch, both characters evolved massively over time. The production of Monsters, Inc. involved significant technological advancements for Pixar - only six years after Toy Story - especially in fur animation, making Sulley's character feel more lifelike and relatable. And bizarrely, also tentacles.Animation isn't just for kids; it's a versatile art form that can tell deep stories, as seen in the exploration of themes like fear and love in Monsters, Inc. It cleverly critiques societal fears and misconceptions, showing how characters are shaped by the narratives they believe—like the monsters thinking children are toxic.I'm pretty sure kids aren't toxic, though, right? RIGHT?I would love to hear your thoughts on Monsters, Inc. !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Send us a textA tart key lime pie martini with a graham cracker rim is our catalyst for a full‑tilt imagineering session: if Disney's rumored expansions really land, which ones would we sprint to first—and why? We map out five bold concepts and give each a heartbeat with ride systems, restaurants, and signature cocktails you can practically taste. We start with Monstropolis, where a suspended “door vault” coaster could deliver a rare Disney sweet spot: thrilling enough for teens, whimsical enough for kids, and endlessly re‑rideable. Think Harry Hausen's sushi with a crisp saketini and a playful gummy‑eye garnish, plus a refreshed show space to keep crowds moving. Then we dive into Villains Land, sketching two e‑ticket anchors and a moody multi‑room “Lair” where each chamber channels a different baddie—Sazerac for Dr. Facilier, spice‑bright North African notes for Jafar, and dry‑ice theatrics fit for the Evil Queen. It lives on street energy: sharp character improv, quotable one‑liners, and wicked photo ops.Next up, Piston Peak shifts gears to Rocky Mountain grit: an off‑road racing experience, a family ride, and hearty comfort food. Picture bison burgers, green‑chile sides, huckleberry desserts, and a reservation‑only beer and whiskey lounge to finally give Magic Kingdom a grown‑up hideout. Over at DCA, Pandora: The Way of Water remains murky but promising; we imagine a headline water ride with glowing foliage, plus a California‑leaning canteen that balances bioluminescent looks with clean, craveable flavors. Finally, Tropical Americas blends Encanto's color and music with an Indiana Jones overlay. The aesthetics could be breathtaking—string lights, carved wood, and a nightly plaza party—powered by a proper caipirinha bar and savory South American plates that make you linger. We wrap with our predicted build order and a simple truth: rides hook guests, but food, drinks, music, and playful spaces make lands sticky. Hit play, then tell us which concept should get greenlit first. If you enjoy these big‑swing blueprints, subscribe, share with a Disney‑loving friend, and drop a review so more fans can find the show.

As the Talking Heads once nearly sang: “And may find yourself beamed up into a spacecraft. And you may find yourself pretending to be the leader of Earth. And you may find yourself hanging out with weird and wonderful beings from outer-space, going up against intergalactic warlords and maybe learning a thing or two about belonging along the way.” Yes, it's an Elio special on today's Script Apart, as we venture across the cosmos with the Pixar film's co-directors, Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian. Elio tells the story of a child who longs to be abducted by aliens. Still reeling from the loss of his parents and struggling to adjust to living with his well-meaing aunt, the character embarks on an adventure that changes how he sees life back on Earth. It was written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer and Mike Jones, from a story by Madeline, Domee and Adrian Molina. Domee you may know as the director of Turning Red, which we covered on this show in 2022. Madeline, meanwhile, is the director behind Burrough, a beautiful Pixar short film from a couple of years ago (this is her first feature). In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, we discuss initial drafts of this story in which Olga was Elio's mother, rather than his aunt. I ask about how the film grapples with loneliness; the process of creating the magical worlds that Pixar movies so often invite filmgoers into, whether that's Monstropolis or Coco's Land of the Dead; and of course, the meaning of that Carl Sagan speech asking “Are we alone?” that close the film.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Several announcements have occurred in recent days regarding attractions closing to make way for upcoming construction activity at Walt Disney World. That information (and the lack of other information) is starting to tell us much about how attractions are going to come on board in the years to come, and even in the months to come. We look at what attraction building criteria is driving those dates, then take a new look at the calendar extending all the way up to 2030. We look closely at some possibilities with new projects named such as Bluey, and the theater in Monstropolis. And we offer some smart low-hanging potential projects Disney could take advantage of to fill its attraction roster.
