Fred is excited to join Sybil today to discuss budgets and finances. Donors often do a good job at asking for very specific and detailed project proposals but then fail to be equally specific in their financial and budget requests. They discuss how to focus your request for the nonprofit's financial information that aligns with your proposal request. This way you won't have the nonprofit doing busywork. It is crucial to carefully consider the financial stability and potential of a nonprofit before donating, but unnecessary to ask for too much irrelevant financial information that you may not even use in your actual decision to fund the organization.Episode Highlights:Importance of a understanding nonprofit's financial stability without asking for everything and the kitchen sinkSybil Ackerman-Munson Bio:With over 20 years of experience as a nonprofit professional and foundation advisor, I work with philanthropic institutions and foundations interested in successful, high-impact grant making, so you can make a real and lasting positive contribution to the world on your terms.Links:IRS - https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/tax-exempt-organization-searchCharity Navigator - https://www.charitynavigator.org/Candid Charity Check - https://www.guidestar.org/Free mini-courses.Be Collaborative - https://www.doyourgood.com/offers/PXGEYkWh/checkoutBe Finance Savvy - https://www.doyourgood.com/offers/kQwFWG4P/checkoutBe Legal - https://www.doyourgood.com/offers/U8SFR3mR/checkoutIf you enjoyed this episode, listen to these as well: https://www.doyourgood.com/blog/141-Understanding-Collaborative-Campaign-Budgets-Dedeee%20Wilnerhttps://www.doyourgood.com/blog/140-Helping-Nonprofits-and-Organizations-Create-Collaborative%20Budgetshttps://www.doyourgood.com/blog/139-Sybil-Speaks-Cut-Through-the-Red-Tape-of-a-Nonprofits-Finances Crack the Code: Sybil's Successful Guide to PhilanthropyBecome even better at what you do as Sybil teaches you the strategies as well as the tools you'll need to avoid mistakes and make a career out of philanthropy.Sybil offers resources that include special free short video mini-courses, templates, and key checklists, and words of advice summarized in easy-to-view PDFs. Sybil Ackerman-Munson is a nonprofit professional and foundation advisor. She founded Do Your Good, an LLC dedicated to helping individuals and businesses make lasting, meaningful contributions to the world. In September, she will be launching her Crack the Code Course, step-by-step lessons on how to build a philanthropic life.  In this episode, Dean Newlund and Sybil Ackerman-Munson discuss:How you could do more harm than good without due diligenceFor-profit business concepts that are useful for nonprofit managersPreventing burn out in the nonprofit space Adjusting your pitch according to the kind of donor  Key Takeaways:Being an effective giver will take certain due diligence, especially if you have a lot to give. Giving without knowing the community and the reputation of a nonprofit can do more harm than good.Nonprofit founders generally start companies to do good, but to sustain their organization, they need to have studied how to operate a for-profit business and how to collaborate with others. The motivation for everyone ultimately is to do good, but the good can only be sustained if those who initiate and manage that change is properly incentivized. It's not wrong for nonprofit workers to earn more. There are three kinds of donors. First is the sustainer donor, they are the ones that love your group and will fund you year after year. Second is the campaigner donor, somebody who cares about a specific cause. The third is the launcher donor and they want to fill in the gaps. "You, as a nonprofit, need to know the kind of donor you're talking to. In my over a decade of experience, I've found that there's three distinct types of donors. And if you talk to the one wrong, you're not going to even get in the door." —  Sybil Ackerman-Munson See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I  Connect with Sybil Ackerman-Munson:  Website: https://www.doyourgood.com/aboutInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/doyourgood/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/doyourgood/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sybil-ackerman-munson-847b428/  Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla  Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. “If you approach the wrong donor the wrong way, then you will leave money on the table and you'll lose them at hello." All your donors are not alike. They may all have one thing in common: they want to support your work. But their motivations and interests may vary widely. Understanding why they support you and how they prefer to do so can make the difference between greater support and alienation. Unlike actors, they're not going to ask you “what's my motivation?” Instead, that's a question that you should be asking them. Sybil Ackerman-Munson of Do Your Good has helped funders give away over $45 million to nonprofits whose work aligns with their own ethos. In the process, she identified three donor archetypes, based on their motivations. Sybil joins the show to explain how nonprofits can better understand and communicate with each type of donor to create better, more beneficial relationships for both sides. ** Episode Links and Shownotes: https://nphf.show/ep49 ** What we'll be discussing: • The importance of positive messaging even in dire times • Three three categories that every donor falls into, and what that means for your fundraising • How to determine what type of donor each person is • The problem with the competitive scarcity mindset • Opportunities and fundraising advantages of collaboration

This week our guest is Sybil Ackerman-Munson at Do Your Good. Sybil shared with us the three types of donors that every fundraiser should know and understand. For two decades, Sybil has been a trusted advisor and has helped give away over $45 million. Sybil has served on numerous boards, task forces, and stakeholder groups; and what I most appreciated about our conversation today was that her insights have emerged from experience with being on both sides of the charitable gift exchange.  I'm always up for a framework that helps us make more sense of ourselves and others, and that's what Sybil had for us this morning. As she began to describe each type of donor, I immediately began to recall personalities throughout my career who fit each part perfectly. I have to say that, as someone who has spent my entire career thinking about how to better understand and relate to donors in more meaningful ways, Sybil's three-type framework deserves to be at the top of anyone's resource list. Sybil's insights really knocked it out of the park this morning. If you'd like to learn more about Sybil and Do Your Good, visit their website here. As always, we are especially grateful to our friends at CueBack for sponsoring The Fundraising Talent Podcast.
