POPULARITY
Daniel H. Wilson has a PhD in robotics and is the author of the non-fiction books ‘How to Survive a Robot Uprising', ‘How to Build a Robot Army' and ‘Where's my Jetpack', as well as the bestselling science fiction novels ‘Robopocalypse' and its sequel ‘Robogenesis', ‘The Clockwork Dynasty', and most recently ‘The Andromeda Evolution' - the authorized sequel to Michael Crichton's 'The Andromeda Strain'. We talk about how he came to inherit Michael Crichton's mantle and be chosen to write 'The Andromeda Evolution', discussing Planetary Protection as well as the biotech/nanotech crossover in material science in this book. We also consider Artificial Intelligence, First Contact, and the more human and cultural themes in his recent work, especially in his short story ‘The Blue Afternoon That Lasted Forever' and his upcoming book ‘Heliopause', which gives an indigenous perspective on First Contact with an alien intelligence. Finally, we talk about the Western reductionist perspective compared with a more indigenous approach to science, with biomimetic strategies of studying systems embedded in their natural context, as well as developing respect and comfort with the unknown.Buzzsprout (podcast host):https://thescienceinthefiction.buzzsprout.comEmail: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/743522660965257/Twitter:https://twitter.com/MartyK5463

Alex, Matt, and Rocco each break down a favorite project that Steven Spielberg almost made throughout his long and storied career. An incredibly expensive adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's Robopocalypse is Alex's pick, since he once got a moment to discuss the project with Michael Bay, who inherited the script (and some leftover sets) from Spielberg. Matt reveals Spielberg's fascination with modern toilet innovator, Thomas Crapper, and a possible film based on the book Flushed with Pride, before diving deep on what SHREK would have looked like if Spielberg made it back in the 1990s with Bill Murray and Steve Martin. Then, Rocco brings in a Michael Crichton adaptation of PIRATE LATITUDES, a no-fun realism take on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN that sounds like it was based on Jimmy Buffett song (even if it wasn't).And that's the end of our new mini-marathon, folks! This summer, we're gettin' in the ring with Steven for the SPIELBERG SUMMER SLAM! We're hitting up his incredible run of blockbusters from the genre-defining JAWS (1975) up through his hand-wave screen technology-introducing MINORITY REPORT (2002)!The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. Dive deep into fan-favorite films (#NoStinkers!), thematically curated to enhance your movie viewing by hosts Matt Detisch, Alex Logan, and Michael Rocco.Find us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at neverendingmoviemarathon.com

Thank you to Krista for commissioning this episode, and this entire book! These chapters wrap things up in a way that is so efficient as to almost feel rushed, but we also end at almost the exact moment that Rob is defeated (OR IS HE) so it still works. Turns out that Mathilda is the key to everything, and I wonder if the fact that she low-key saves them, or the fact that a sentient robot was the one to really seal the deal, will help with trans-human or robot relations in the future. Thanks for listening, and I will perhaps be seeing you eventually with the sequel!
Thank you so much to Krista for commissioning this episode! In these chapters, we find out that Rob has been doing some experimental shit on people and I'm super duper not interested. DO YOU HEAR ME? I WILL NOT BE REQUIRING A NEWSLETTER. I WOULD LIKE NOT TO KNOW THIS. Thanks for listening!
Thank you to Krista for commissioning this episode! In these chapters, we begin to see everything come together; we've got robots achieving sentience, we've got a little girl whose robotic eyeball implants are the key to a few puzzles, and we've got the whole movement towards Alaska that will eventually result in finding the heart of Archos. Here we goooooooo! Thanks for listening!
Thank you to Krista for commissioning this episode! These are the chapters where we see some people make an interesting choice and decide against fleeing to the countryside, choosing instead to demolish their city to make it more difficult for the robots to move around. There's a lot of other stuff, too! Thanks for listening!
Thank you to Krista for commissioning this episode! So these are the chapters in which we circle back around to Lurker and find out how he chose to handle everything, plus we revisit Gray Horse and get to see a rite of passage for a kid who otherwise is about to go down a bad road. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!
Thank you to Krista for commissioning this episode! So in case you're confused about how this covers into Chapter 1, which by all rights should be BEFORE chapter 5, I'm talking about Part 2. I know, I know, I didn't organize the book, okay? These chapters are the ones in which some of the more major....er, incidents? pop off. And one of them happens to this shitty little troll, and I wanna know what the fuck happens to him because he sucks and I want him to be better. Also, there's a little girl who seems rad. Thanks for listening!
Thank you to Krista for commissioning this episode! This book has started out strong, and I'm very much here for this storytelling style, as we all know. I wanna know the logistics, and these methods of unspooling a tale are SUPER heavy on logistics! Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you again very soon with a new episode!

Is the "real world" just a simulation? Is Francis a fidelity test? What's Incite up to, and why is Gene Lyons so happy? We answer these questions and more in Shat on TV's first "Westworld" Deep Dive of Season 3. Episode 1, "Parce Domine" brought us a Bible lesson, a new face for artificial intelligence, a missing Delos board member, updated opening credits, and a frank examination of personal data. Plus, Big D brings up "Robopocalypse" yet again; Gene laments freedom of choice, and Ashley talks opera. Westworld Episode 1 Summary: "Parce Domine" Three months after the Westworld massacre, Dolores uses a false identity to get close to Liam Dempsey Jr., the son of the co-founder of Incite. Liam is the public face of the company and its flagship program Rehoboam, a sophisticated artificial intelligence, which Dolores is trying to gain access to. Liam knows little himself, but as he is about to reveal the name of one who knows, Dolores is knocked out by Martin, Liam's head of security who discovered Dolores' deception. Martin intends to kill Dolores, but she instead lures him into a trap, which allows her to replace Martin with a host of Martin to get that information. She is wounded in a firefight but rescued by Caleb, a former soldier that is trying to eke out an existence as a construction worker and petty criminal who had seen Martin try to kill her. Elsewhere, Bernard stays ahead of a manhunt for him and intends to travel to Westworld, while the Charlotte host takes control of Delos. Maeve wakes in a World War II-themed park with Nazis. Are robots taking over our world? What’s the difference between a robot and an AI? A look at Black Mirror’s “Metalhead” episode, and Beymax and Daniel H. Wilson’s “Robopocalypse” series, with Wilson himself and the professor who taught him.
In this second part on brain-computer interfaces, discussion goes toward the more speculative. Joe and Rolf talk about Elon Musk's Neuralink project, which aims to fully connect brains with computers. Would this be possible? Could any system really read our thoughts in the way portrayed in science fiction? Should we even want this to happen? And most importantly, how does this affect the coming Robopocalypse?
It is said that Jesus hits like the atom bomb. If so, then Buddha, or at least this episode on Buddhism and near-future technology, might be the daisy cutter of philosophy. Whereas most of the episodes on Research on Religion have focused on Christianity, the dominant faith tradition in the English-speaking world and the topic most in my wheelhouse, I tried to venture outside of the box on a regular basis to learn about other religions. Relative to Christianity, there isn't as much social...Keep on reading: #1 Matthew Moore on Buddhism, Meditating Machines, and the Robopocalypse.

Whose jobs are the robots going to take away? It doesn't look like lawyers are safe... An AI just beat top lawyers at their own game Feb 25, 2018 A new study, conducted by legal AI platform LawGeex in consultation with law professors from Stanford University, Duke University School of Law, and University of Southern California, pitted twenty experienced lawyers against an AI trained to evaluate legal contracts. The human lawyers achieved, on average, an 85 percent accuracy rate, while the AI achieved 95 percent accuracy. The AI also completed the task in 26 seconds, while the human lawyers took 92 minutes on average. The AI also achieved 100 percent accuracy in one contract, on which the highest-scoring human lawyer scored only 97 percent. In short, the human lawyers were trounced. So will this cost lawyers their jobs? The linked article says no: "So does this spell the end of humanity? Not at all. On the contrary, the use of AI can actually help lawyers expedite their work, and free them up to focus on tasks that still require a human brain." On the Other hand… Yes these tools will make existing lawyers more productive, but that doesn’t mean it won’t cost lawyers’ jobs. How many billable hours have already been lost to LegalZoom? We see something similar happenning with AI's outdiagnosing doctors. Will we soon live in a world where we receive some or all of our medical care and legal advice from machine? Computers are already better than doctors at diagnosing some diseases Dec 12, 2017 Next time: how computers might play a role in diagnosing and treating the biggest killer of them all: aging. Recorded 22nd July 2017 No guests this week, and not a lot of Apple news, but we still manage to find a slew of weird, wonderful, interesting or crazy stories to shake a stick at... ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. Plus Simon “goes off on one” about how hard it was to just play some music files on his iPhone like we all used to do on our iPods... and why he banished the iOS Music app to the darkest recesses of the “Rarely Used” folder on the furthest screen of his iPhone. Here's What We Know (So Far) About the iPhone 9. The 2018 iPhone, set to launch after the iPhone 8, may be dubbed the "iPhone 9." Some big changes could be in store. Here's what (we think) Apple is planning – Inverse From @dougee A little tip for you all: If you find somewhere (i.e. a place of business) in Apple Maps and use the save as contact button, you get all the information available for that place - including opening hours and a mini map inside the contact. This will be immensely useful for doctors and the like at the very least I'm sure. From @dougee PSA: Delete One File To Recover Admin On Any Mac. Orii bone conduction ring puts phone calls at your fingertips. Besides talking into a shoe, the most spy-like way to take a phone call is to just stick your finger in your ear. Orii allows you to do that, thanks to bone conduction technology that sends vibrations through your hand to directly stimulate the little ear bones responsible for hearing – NewAtlas from @macjim Robot 'drowns' in fountain mishap. The wheeled security robot in Washington DC tumbled into a fountain at an office building – BBC News That's a better version than the one I saw first which suggested that the “boring job” led it into “ending its misery” however I have to say I loved the quotes "Steps are our best defence against the Robopocalypse,” and "We were promised flying cars, instead we got suicidal robots." from @dougee Command line macOS update is reportedly faster, allows use of Mac while updating. If you get fed up watching the progress bar crawl along when updating your Mac to a new version of macOS, a Reddit thread has a useful hint to speed things up: using a Terminal command instead. I am v cynical on why car leasing is being pushed > In future it will be due to autonomous cars. At moment It's rebranding debt as something like renting. £68bn car finance in UK currently. I realise that you were taking the tech angle though but people should see current leasing for what it is. Arguably not good for economy. A New Book Aimed at Elementary AstronomersThe Baker City writer and illustrator Nancy Coffelt teamed up with publisher Elaine Cuyler to create her new book, “The Big Eclipse,” which uses charming animal characters and goofy jokes to help kids learn about the eclipse. Coffelt and Cuyler blew through all the books in their first printing and are filing orders with a second.Umbraphile and Author David Baron - 7:37David Baron is a former NPR science correspondent and the author of a new book, “American Eclipse,” which tells the story of an eclipse that captured the nation’s attention way back in 1878. At that time, the celestial event offered US scientists one of their first chances to demonstrate that America was a science powerhouse to rival Europe. But Baron isn’t just someone who writes about eclipses — he also chases them, traveling around the world to see the rare events.Tips and Tricks for Photographing the Eclipse - 15:25Portland-based astro-photographer Jake Breed gives us a demonstration of best practices for getting a perfect shot during the two minutes of daytime darkness. Plus, helpful hints from an art educator who’s spending the whole week of the eclipse leading a workshop for amateur photographers, and a quick conversation with one astronomer from NASA about why this eclipse is such a big deal, anyway. Portugal. The Man on Their New Album, “Woodstock” - 21:32This week, an exclusive interview with Portland-based band Portugal. The Man. Creating “Woodstock,” the band’s newest album, took a long time. They couldn’t stop writing, and pumped out about 40 songs, collaborating with the likes of producer Mike D from the Beastie Boys at Rick Rubin’s illustrious studio, Shangri-La. But then they decided to throw them all out and start again. The band explains how it all came together after they settled on the album’s name: “Woodstock.” Stay tuned for videos of the full live session, which will be published on opbmusic later this month. Futurist Daniel Wilson Goes Steampunk in His New Novel, “The Clockwork Dynasty” - 20:15Our favorite futurist has gone all anachronistic. Daniel Wilson, a New York Times best-selling novelist, robotics engineer, and Cherokee citizen, gave us forward-thinking science fiction page-turners like “Robopocalypse” and “How To Survive A Robot Uprising.” Wilson’s new novel tears across the centuries, from prehistoric China to Tsarist Russia to Victorian England and — briefly — the present day Willamette Valley, chasing after exquisite sentient machines. “The Clockwork Dynasty” is the story of a race of mechanical beings who’ve lived side-by-side with humans since the dawn of history. Bag&Baggage Premieres a Persian Take on "Romeo & Juliet" Based Off an Ancient Poem that Inspired Shakespeare - 41:34Bag&Baggage Productions in Hillsboro is about to premier an adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" that opens new doors on a story that is even older than Shakespeare. A thousand years before Romeo and Juliet, Arab-language poets were telling the story of Layla and Majnun: star-crossed lovers whose spiral of obsession and longing turned fatal. The Hillsboro production does not rewrite Romeo and Juliet so much as present elements of both stories together, complementing and contrasting with each other. Listen to the full conversation with Bag & Baggage artistic director Scott Palmer and the assistant director for the project, Melory Mirashrafihere, here, and catch "Romeo & Juliet/Layla & Majnun" in Hillsboro through Aug. 5.

This week, we spoke to Wanda Bertram, the producer of a newly funded Kickstarter documentary called A Brief History of Time Travel: A Mindbending Documentary! Over the past 3 years, director Gisella Bustillos and her team have been interviewing personalities like Bill Nye ("the Science Guy"), legendary game designer Tim Schafer and Robopocalypse author Daniel Wilson about time travel, and how it relates to pop culture and science. Time travel is one of the most contagious ideas in science fiction. In a society where time is a unit of value and instant gratification is prized, the idea of traveling through time offers a means of escape. And our obsession with time travel is growing: in the last decade, it's appeared more than ever in books, movies, and pop culture. What makes time travel so powerful that it resonates in each of us, and to what lengths are we going today to make it a reality? A Brief History of Time Travel is the biography of an idea, chasing time travel from the... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In which our heroes come with you because they want to live. We look at all of Skynet’s ill-conceived schemes and wonder if they’re even trying. It’s a verbal journey as we explore the numerous options our future overlords had of taking out John Connor from mustard gas in the future, sending giant skin tanks to the present or just killing the bloodline in the far past. Zammit sells humanity out the first chance he gets to join team robot, Jackson has a watery solution for us to co-exists, at least for a little while, and Duscher gets far too confused and angry about time-travel. Skynet just need to get over their hate boner for John Connor, hunker down and focus on their robopocalypse end game. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Prawatt Jihad strikes terror into the hearts of sentients all over the galaxy. This race of intelligent, self-replicating machines is shrouded in fear, mystery and mistrust, yet at the center of it all is the “living god” known as Petra Prawatt — a human girl. What is her story? How did she become the focal point of the galaxy’s most-populous — and most-warlike — race? Find out in “Complex God,” a novelette in the anthology ROBOT UPRISINGS, due out April 8, 2014 (but them pre-order links be below, Jack). Edited by scifi anthology legend John Joseph Adams and ROBOPOCALYPSE author Daniel H. Wilson, this book brings together some serious world-destroying talent. COVER COPY:Humans beware. As the robotic revolution continues to creep into our lives, it brings with it an impending sense of doom. What horrifying scenarios might unfold if our technology were to go awry? From self-aware robotic toys to intelligent machines violently malfunctioning, this anthology brings to life the half-formed questions and fears we all have about the increasing presence of robots in our lives. With contributions from a mix of bestselling, award-winning, and up-and-coming writers, and including a rare story by “the father of artificial intelligence,” Dr. John McCarthy, Robot Uprisings meticulously describes the exhilarating and terrifying near-future in which humans can only survive by being cleverer than the rebellious machines they have created. Robopocalypse is a brilliantly conceived action-filled epic, a terrifying story with heart-stopping implications for the real technology all around us. Director Steven Spielberg has already started making the movie version, which is slated for release in 2013. Wilson received his PhD in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. He has also written a nonfiction book, How to Survive a Robot Uprising.

00:00:00 - Daniel H. Wilson joins the Paleopals to talk about the science of robots and the sort of novels. Namely his new one, the highly enjoyable Robopocalypse! Be sure to check out the rest of Wilson's literary catalog (including some very practical survival books) at his Amazon page. Keep an eye on thePaleocave Blogf or Ryan's review! 00:52:51 - How can you prove you're not a robot? Ingest some alcohol and hope Futurama has been wrong all these years. Ben eschews that test (very suspicious) in favor of some foreign Philippine nectar that we're waiting on authenticity confirmation from Pang. Ryan, after talking horrors of the future, sips on a Monster Ale from the past (2007) in the form of a Barleywine from the Brooklyn Brewery. And Jacob heads north with a Latitude 48 IPA from Samuel Adams, which is an IPA for everyone to enjoy! 00:58:34 - While you may have been underwhelmed in the theaters the second trailer for Real Steel with Hugh Jackman et al. looks far more promising, at least that's what the Paleopals say in this week's Trailer Trash Talk! 01:08:14- PaloePOWs are a lot like robots, they have no regards for our feelings. This week Ben brings us a kanji iTunes review from Japan, Ryan has an e-mail from Seth E. about the joys of the Cincinnati-based culinary treat: Skyline Chili, and Jacob has a voicemail from Cameron of Minnesota asking our thoughts on the technological Singularity. Thanks for listening! Our blog promises to spare you in the event of the Singularity, so thank it by visiting the Paleocave! We have returned and are about to go a bit retro. Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Justin are in search of a list of fair competitive video games across all of the eras to create new game tournaments for our listeners and for upcoming Horrible Night Outs. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We will not be dettered by failed recordings. The Horrible Show is back because before we talk about video games, we know you wanted to hear all about Cole’s reality TV adventures and wherever else the Threesomes of the Week takes us. Actually, we hope you survived the Threesomes enough to make it to our favorite multiplayer memories and our On the Spot question. Where we bring to light the age old question of why would you play Madden when you can play NFL Blitz? This is all of course just to set the mood as we have a real mission this week: to come up with some compelling classic competitive games for game tournanments for our listeners and potentially for upcoming Horrible Night Outs. It’s a veritable free-for-all as we look at games we grew up and onto some current favorites. Which Smash Bros is the best choice? Is Geometry Wars 2 better without shooting? Maybe puzzle games are better than we think they are. Is StarCraft II even an option for new players? I’m sure we don’t have the answers, but we did get a great list out of our discussion. Let us know what games we missed so we can continue build some compelling contests in the near future. Then, we can’t help but announce the next Horrible Night Out on July 8th as we return to Net Heads where we hope to game with our Indy listeners and their friends. On our way off the air, an epiphany strikes Cole and Justin G as they finally discover a use for handheld gaming devices.
