Fictional character from EastEnders
POPULARITY
Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.This time, in a special summer edition, Tim, Bob Fischer and Georgy Jamieson are all crowding into a sweltering local radio studio with only a lone copy of the Capital Radio DJs' Dot Cotton and Thatcher impression-led parody cover of The Holiday Rap by MC Miker G And DJ Sven to hand, ready to take your calls about some of the seaside tat and summer holiday boredom that - perhaps thankfully - you just don't seem to get any more. So that's morning television being full of crackly old repeated imports and Why Don't You...?, Breakfast Television insisting on presenting daily roving 'saucy' reports from seaside towns, everyone watching the tennis and cricket coverage for the theme music and then switching off, the Radio 1 Roadshow, badly-planned interminable car journeys to rain-lashed resorts, those weird shops that sold plastic fishing nets and fold-up aviator shades and arcades that had one lone solitary 'Space Invaders' machine, the newsagent wheeling out that big freezer for another summer of rivalry between Wall's and Lyons Maid and much more besides. In a drizzly heatwave of a chat we'll be speculating on the efficacy of Kiss-Me-Quick-Hats sported by popular television puppets, searching for Ian Botham's constantly moving speakeasy, visiting the Motorway Service Station Mirror Universe, revisiting the BBC's 'Summer Apes' Season, celebrating the work of the Gary Davies Elvis fairground artist, despairing of the rival rivalries between Mr. Freeze and Ice Pops and The Halfwits and The Dingbats, revealing why all ice cream vans have an army of Mods in hot pursuit, organising a day trip to the exact spot where Roland Rat pushed Kevin The Gerbil down a hill, going to see Confessions Of A Ventriloquist starring Robin Askwith and Richard Herring, not staring at Erika Roe on an on-the-spot report live from a joke shop and debating whether summer is ever truly summer if you haven't spent the entirety of it throwing a tennis ball against a wall. Call in and tell us the most you've ever won on a 'one-armed bandit' now!You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/. You can also find Bob and Georgy on Looks Unfamiliar taking a look at some of their favourite forgotten Christmas trimmings here as well as Bob on The Tom O'Connor Roadshow, Giant Hogweed, Can't Get A Ticket (For The World Cup) by Peter Dean, Glee Bars, J. Joanna Toye grew up as an only child surrounded by adults - and she wonders if this is what gave her her love for stories. She's spent her whole career telling them. She worked for decades as a scriptwriter & producer for Radio 4's The Archers, as well as other treasures like Crossroads and EastEnders. But then there was a twist in her own story, and Joanna decided it was time to create her own world - one which suited her and her family. A trip to an exhibition changed everything and she began writing historical saga novels. In this conversation Joanna tells us what it's really like to be a writer of some of the biggest storylines on our biggest soaps (it's fascinating, I promise!). We discuss what happens when real-life doesn't go to plan, plus we discover the inside truth of a story involving EastEnders, Dot Cotton and her recycling.. (cue EastEnder DOOF, DOOF, DOOF, DOOFs). Joanna is open about her own fears and wobbles and she really is a wonderful storyteller. She believes there's no such thing as failure. She also believes we must find a way to be true ourselves because this is what gives us the power to create a world truly meant for us. To learn more about Joanna and her books you can find her at : https://www.facebook.com/joannatoyewriter/?locale=en_GB To discover more about the work of the boxing charity Empire Fighting Chance you can click here: https://empirefightingchance.org/ And I'd love for you to join my mailing list so we can keep in touch with more of these conversations (and my books too) you can find me here: https://www.elliebarkerwrites.com/ (Go on... "What if Doctor Who but a seizure?" That's how special guest Tom Salinsky begins his take on The Flux, Episode 5 "Survivors of The Flux". Seizure indeed, as there's so much happening in this episode it'll make you spin - Yaz, Dan and Jericho trekking around Earth in 1904, the Doctor outside the universe with an old friend (enemy?) and Dot Cotton from Line of Duty jumping all over the place to start and stop UNIT. Tom and Stu have predictions for the final episode, and there's a bit of a chat about episodes gone by that really hit it out of the park, and what RTD might bring back. Enjoy!
Special guest Tom Salinsky and your host Toby Hadoke hide away from their families over the Christmas and new year period in order to watch Jon Pertwee stalking a potato headed alien whilst Dot Cotton lives in a castle with Boba Fett. It's also your host's birth story so holds a special place in his heart - but does that mean he and his guest will be on the same wavelength? Time (Warrior) will tell...

In this episode the lads discuss PJ serving a look with his new pearl necklace which has left Dot Cotton off Corrie shaking and also leads them to talk about Harry Styles’ recent Vogue cover. The lads then explore going with your gut and making decisions in an age where we are overwhelmed with options which leads to choice paralysis which is PJ's favourite term ever. Then, to make the episode more fully-rounded and because they’re in the mood to have a skit, they play a game of ‘Would You Rather’ and the girlies did not disappoint with the chaotic submissions. Since the nation was introduced to the likes of Elsie Tanner and Ken Barlow in the northern town of Weatherfield almost 60 years ago, television soap operas have gripped viewers across the networks. Some talk about it as an addiction as the weddings, funerals, rows, murders, love triangles, crashes, affairs and divorces are played out on our screens. As these epic stories draw on our emotions, some have argued that it's easy to see the biblical and other religious parallels in the story-lines. In this addition of Beyond Belief, Ernie Rea discusses the religious influences on the soaps and how they have portrayed religious characters over the years with Dr Katie Edwards, a freelance writer and broadcaster who has researched the Bible in popular culture; Mark Pinsky author of "The Gospel According to the Simpsons", the Right Reverend Dr John Saxbee, retired Bishop of Lincoln and June Brown who played Dot Cotton. Producer: Amanda Hancox

Ever feel like you missed something important when it comes to the news? A fact, a detail, or an event that it feels like everyone else knows about, and now you'd look like a moron if you asked someone to explain? Well, here's a podcast that will ask those questions so you don't have to.This week, host Danielle Ward is joined by Jonn Elledge from The New Statesman and CityMetric, who will explain everything you need to know about housing - and assuming you like living indoors, that's quite a lot. Danielle is joined by comedians Gabriel Ebulue (host of the The Three Track Podcast) and Margaret Cabourn-Smith (John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme).Questions asked and answered include:Why are houses so expensive? Why do you need planning permission to put up a ten-foot statue of Dot Cotton on your own property? Why aren't the government building social housing? What is the best way to tax property?....so if you've sort of been guessing the answers based on a gut feeling, why not listen and find out for sure? And then subscribe to stay equally informed about other issues, as we get around to them. All our guests are on Twitter, so go and say hello - @jonnelledge @gabrielebulue and @mcabournsmith, and Danielle is @captainward. And the show itself now has a Twitter account: @AnyStupidQs. Follow it for information about upcoming episodes, recordings, and extra bits of the show that had to be cut for any reason (usually it's just a bit off-topic).Produced by Ed Morrish (@edmorrish)Music from www.akmmusic.co.uk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

June Brown is best known today for her role as the long-suffering chain-smoking Dot Cotton (now Dot Branning) in the BBC TV soap EastEnders. She arrived on a three month contract in 1985 and is still in the show. She was nominated for a BAFTA in 2008.She celebrates her 90th birthday in February 2017 and has no intention of retiring as acting "keeps her alive". June was born in Suffolk and brought up in a music-loving family. Towards the end of World War Two, she joined up, choosing the WRNS where she worked as a cinema operator showing training films and newsreels to the sailors. She did some acting during that time and after a brief and unsuccessful job in an office, she was one of very few chosen to receive a classical training at the Old Vic Theatre School. From there she joined the Old Vic Theatre Company where she worked with such greats as Edith Evans, Laurence Oliver and Albert Finney. Her roles included Lady Macbeth and Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. She had five children in relatively quick succession and continued acting on TV and the London stage, often putting her youngest in a pram and going in the guard's van on the train to the theatre.Throughout her time on EastEnders she has occasionally ventured away to direct or take part in other television series. In 2009 she stripped down to nothing as Jessie in the stage production Calendar Girls. She was 82.She was awarded an MBE for services to drama and charity in 2008.Producer: Sarah Taylor.
