In May 2024, the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) published its report on Skills for International Financial Services - An Assessment of Future Skills Requirements in High Potential Sub-sectors of Ireland's International Financial Services Sector to 2027. This report identifies the availability of training and education relevant to the financial services industry. It assesses where gaps might arise in terms of new skills and numbers of skilled individuals up to 2027. It also sets out a number of recommendations to ensure that the potential training and skills needs identified can be addressed effectively. Who better to chat to about this report than Martina Kelly, who chaired expert Steering Group that directed the production and publication of the report. Martina is Director Funds at the IOB (Institute of Bankers) and acts as an independent director to several Irish regulated financial services providers. We discuss the background to the report, its aims and findings. We also discuss the recommendations produced and the plans for ensuring that they are implemented. Plenty to discuss then – enjoy!

Ep222: Are we doing enough? H&S governance gets new high-quality guidance, with Chris Jones & Craig Marriott

Safety on Tap

Are we doing enough? Is the fundamental question of H&S governance. And the answer, it seems at least in New Zealand, is largely not one given with confidence. And beyond NZ, the answer sometimes seems vague, unclear, or uncertain. Governance arguably is the lynchpin around which all health and safety performance relies - so there is something in this conversation for everyone. Hey, it's Andrew, and this is Safety on Tap.  Since you're listening in, you must be a leader wanting to grow yourself and drastically improve health and safety along the way.  Welcome to you, you're in the right place.  If this is your first time listening in, thanks for joining us and well done for trying something different to improve! And of course welcome back to all of you wonderful regular listeners. New Zealand has had its fair share of problems with health and safety. Catalysed by the Pike River disaster, new legislation introduced in 2015 styled off the Australian harmonised model promised to strengthen many aspects of health and safety including better control of risk, clearer duties for officers of the organisation, and greater clarity to support regulatory activities. The sad news is not much is changing, with health and safety performance lagging well behind similar regimes in countries like Australia and the UK. Existing guidance was created around 2015 for the new duties imposed upon senior managers and directors of organisations, called 'The Blue Book'. It's clear that whilst well. Intended, this simply has not been enough, with the backdrop of tumultuous government policy for health an safety, constrained  funding, and claims of bare incompetence at Worksafe NZ. The new Good Practice Guide for Health and Safety Governance was led by the NZ Institute of Directors, in close collaboration with Worksafe NZ, the Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum, and the General Manager Safety Forum. The Steering Group was led by Chris Jones on behalf of the GM Safety Forum, and the Lead Author and Expert Advisor is Craig Marriott, both of whom join me in today's conversation. Chris Jones is an experienced strategic health and safety leader, having had Head of Safety roles in both the UK and NZ, in rail, poisons and corrections, and now at global dairy giant Fonterra. He has also worked in health and safety lead roles within the NZ government, and a swathe of industry, regulatory, and expert advisory groups and government consultative committees. Chris is fast becoming one of the most popular health and speakers in this part of the world. Craig Marriott is currently consulting under his own brand, having most recently been the General Manager HSEQ at FirstGas, as well as the Chairperson of the Safety Innovation Community in NZ. With a background in high hazard industries, things that really go boom, and the regulation and creation of safety cases in both the UK and NZ, Craig's experience spans both senior health and safety positions, and a diversity of consulting leadership roles. Craig is both a keynote speaker and author of Challenging the Safety Quo. Chris and Craig are arguably two of the most well known and well respected senior health and safety professionals in New Zealand today, and both have spent time working in senior roles at Worksafe NZ. It's no wonder they've been able to bring their knowledge and leadership to this impressive piece of work on health and safety governance along with a committee of clever and hard working colleagues. Let's talk health and safety governance, with Chris Jones and Craig Marriott:

There's a belief changes to road cone use will help strike a better balance between safety and minimising disruption.   The Government's announced a new risk-based approach to temporary traffic management rather than requiring a certain number of cones per project.   NZTA will also have to publicly report on its total cone spending per quarter.   Temporary traffic management industry steering group chair Dave Tilton told Heather du Plessis-Allan this makes sense.  He said that for the most part the current system served its purpose, but it's been identified that it's not getting the right about of TTM, which is what its purpose is.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Staying the Distance showcases the much-needed leadership lessons that sport can teach us: how to improve, perform and achieve, in ways that are effective and sustainable.Leadership can be hard. It can certainly be relentless. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the well-being, health and sustained performance of many senior leaders, and yet strong leadership remains central to the performance of every single organization.Business leaders are very familiar with drawing lessons from elite sport, particularly around teams, leadership and high performance. But we have all been missing a trick. Day in, day out, sport has been showing us not only how to improve, perform and achieve, but how to do so on a sustained basis, consistently delivering results when it matters. This book shines a light on these unseen lessons, and provides a clear and practical roadmap for how to deploy them in the reader's own leadership practices. With Catherine Baker's unique view into world-class sport and top-level business, and with insights from top performers in both worlds, this book provides a fresh and dynamic take on how - consistently and over the long term - to bring out the best in yourself, and in those you lead. Founder and Director at Sport and Beyond, Catherine Baker is highly sought after as a keynote speaker due to her unique blend of professional background and deep insight into the world of elite sport. She has appeared on speaker panels at a broad range of events, including a Women in Leadership programme (jointly hosted by Goldman Sachs and Deloitte) and the inaugural AllBright FoundHer festival, and a groundbreaking event held at Lords hosted by Women in Sport. In this episode, Kate was joined by Helen Adam and Kate Stanley to talk about language and divorce. Kate and her guests discuss the power of language in shaping and reforming social issues and apply this to divorce and separation. The language that is used in policy and in wider society, has a real impact on people who are separating. They explore the changes in language brought in with the Children's Act, and the move away from ‘battle language' towards cooperative language, as well as the changes in language brought in with 'no-fault divorce' earlier this year.  Finally, Kate and her guests look at other social issues and how shifting the language has had a positive effect. Helen  Adam started her work with separating families as a solicitor in London.  These were pre-Children Act days, with battles over custody and residence. Following a career break, she retrained as a mediator and founded Wells Family Mediation. Helen is also chair of the Family Solutions Group (FSG).  The FSG presses for coordinated political oversight and funding for separated families.  Helen is currently part of an FSG sub-group who are reviewing the language used ‘in the system' for families who live apart. They will be making recommendations for change away from adversarial vocabulary to language which is more family-focussed, promoting child welfare and safe outcomes for all.Kate Stanley is Executive Director of FrameWorks UK – a not for profit communications and research organisation that helps mission-driven organisations achieve the social change they seek.  From 2011, Kate served as Board Director at NSPCC, for nearly ten years.  Previously, Kate was Deputy Director of the leading thinktank, the Institute for Public Policy Research, where she worked closely with academics and organisations to influence government social policy and practice. She has published widely on social policy and advised a wide range of governmental and non-governmental organisations including the University of Glasgow and UK Research and Innovation, and served on the Steering Group on Early Years advising the Duchess of Cambridge on her work in this field. Kate started her career in international development charities, including Save the Children, working in the UK and overseas. She was awarded a Clore Social Leadership Fellowship in 2010, is a Fellow of the British American Project, and former trustee of Hope and Homes for Children. Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/36dvChm Over the last 30 years, since the end of the cold war, the lowering of global barriers and the growth of global public and private Research and Development (R&D) to almost US$2 trillion per year has forever altered global geopolitics and economics. Cross-border research and innovation collaborations and the growth of cross-border supply chains as innovative ecosystems means that no country goes it alone in science and engineering. To illustrate, in the 1960s the USA undertook 70% of global R&D. It is now less than 30% with 20 countries now matching or exceeding the USA in R&D intensity. In the decentralized but densely networked 21st century world of Science & Engineering (S&E) how does each country ensure benefit from its R&D spend? What is the “national interest” role of universities, funded largely by national taxpayers, and of multinationals, with their international footprint, in the new order? These questions have been the focus of a 2-year international project exploring global innovation and national interests exploring these issues. China, of course, poses a special case and challenge for the liberal democracies. It is the fastest growing R&D powerhouse but with a political system quite different from the liberal democracies; there is no presumption of consent of the governed and some high-tech multinationals are more agents of the state than private enterprises. The challenge for the liberal democracies and their S&E institutions is to navigate the necessary cross-border collaboration, particularly on ‘Grand Challenges' such as climate change, while keeping an eye on national economic and geopolitical interests. This is a huge challenge for the UK S&E community, long accustomed to thinking of global collaboration – beyond defence secrets – as net positive engagements benefitting all humankind. Speaker: Professor David Bogle studied Chemical Engineering at Imperial College at both undergraduate and graduate levels, receiving his PhD in 1983. Following this, he worked on modelling and control projects for British Gas before taking a position as lecturer at the University of Adelaide , a position he held from 1986 until 1990. Prof Bogle joined UCL as a lecturer in 1990. He was appointed Professor in 2000. He was Technical Programme Director for the 2005 World Congress of Chemical Engineering. In 2005 he was appointed Head of the UCL Graduate School. Since 2008 he has been chair of the Steering Group of the LERU Doctoral Studies Community. In 2005 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

We first met in the early 1990s in Greece where a number of pioneering meetings on a science of consciousness were arranged by his mentor and our mutual friend Emilios Bouratinos, author of the seminal work Science, Objectivity and Consciousness. During his formative years Vasili worked within the team of Ilya Prigogine (Nobel laureate and honorary SMN Member) at the Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry in Brussels. He is interested in the history of ideas in science and their role in the transformation of science beyond the prevailing mechanistic world-view. Speaker: Chang-Tai Hsieh, Phyllis and Irwin Winkelried Professor of Economics and PCL Faculty Scholar, The University of Chicago Booth School of Business We use administrative registration records with information on the owners of all Chinese firms to document the importance of “connected” investors, defined as state-owned firms or private owners with equity ties with state-owned firms, in the businesses of private owners. We document a hierarchy of private owners: the largest private owners have direct investments from state-owned firms, the next largest private owners have equity investments from private owners that themselves have equity ties with state owners, and the smallest private owners do not have any ties with state owners. The network of connected private owners has expanded over the last two decades. The share of registered capital of connected private owners increased by almost 20 percentage points between 2000 and 2019, driven by two trends. First, state-owned firms have increased their investments in joint ventures with private owners. Second, private owners with equity ties to state owners also increasingly invest in joint ventures with other (smaller) private owners. The expansion in the “span” of connected owners from these investments with private owners may have increased the aggregate output of the private sector by 4.2% a year between 2000 and 2019. Chang-Tai Hsieh conducts research on growth and development. His published papers include “The Life-Cycle of Plants in India and Mexico,” in the Quarterly Journal of Economics; “Misallocation and Manufacturing TFP in China and India,” in the Quarterly Journal of Economics; “Relative Prices and Relative Prosperity,” in the American Economic Review; “Can Free Entry be Inefficient? In November 2020, the European Commission published its Staff Working Document (SWD) “Delivering on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals – A comprehensive approach”. The SWD explains how the European Commission is “taking forward its commitment to sustainable development, the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs through its internal and external action policies, while also monitoring progress at Member State and European Union levels." However, the Staff Working Document merely provides an overview of existing initiatives of the European Commission. Five years after the SDGs were adopted, we have yet only seen a reaffirmation of the EC’s commitment towards the SDGs without real action on what they entail. We have asked key stakeholders, what they think should be the next step in this endless effort to secure that we achieve the SDGs by 2030. Meet Members of the European Parliament and representatives from NGOs, who will comment on the latest staff working document: • Marie-Luise Abshagen, Head of Sustainability Policies at German NGO Forum on Environment and Development and Steering Group member of SDG Watch Europe • Rebecca Humphries, Senior Public Affairs Officer at WWF Brussels – what is our demand as CSO actors and what is the wishes to the MPs. • Niels Fuglsang, MEP S&D (ITRI) and initiator of European Parliamentarians for the Global Goals • Petros Kokkalis, MEP GUE (ENVI) Moderator: Julie Rosenkilde, Director of Nyt Europa Supported by Europa-Nævnet

Lou Walker Lou is a health coach. She helps clients change those sticky habits that get in the way of health and living life to the fullest. She has a particular interest in the benefits of eating ‘real food', weight management, and workplace health and wellbeing. As well as working one-to-one with individual clients, she works within organisations, coaching people, running workshops and helping employers make it as easy as possible for people to be healthy at work. For 16 years Lou was a leadership development consultant, specialising in behavioural diagnostics and personal development. But a longstanding interest in the relationship between health and performance led her to a Masters degree in Obesity & Weight Management and a postgraduate certificate in Human Nutrition, and then a career change towards health coaching. Her Masters research was the first academic study into workplace cake culture. Its findings have implications for workplace health and Lou is campaigning to help organisations rethink workplace snacking and food-based reward culture to reduce workplace sugar consumption.Outside of work she is an athletics coach and sports massage therapist, an ambassador for the UK Public Health Collaboration and on the Steering Group for the Real Food Campaign. In this episode, athlete and researcher, Lou Walker started her low carb journey to find out what was the optimal for her Ironman performances. Lou didn't have any ailments and wasn't over weight but she edged her family towards low carb by cutting out potatoes, rice and pasta. She then signed up for The Real Meal Revolution and went fully keto.Lou recognises that stress and boredom make her want to eat carby foods but she doesn't give in to the urges.Lou has swam in open water and accessed the fat on her body to keep her energy going. This helped her not have to take in nutrition whilst she was swimming.Bread is a treat for Lou on Christmas Day and her birthday.Lou did a Masters in obesity and weight management. He has co-authored a large number of research deliverables on Anti-Money Laundering for the European Commission and the Future of Identity for the Information Society (FIDIS), a large scale 6-year EU-funded project with 25 academic/industry participants across the EU (including Microsoft and IBM), for which he was a Convener of its Steering Group. His book on AML entitled ‘Technology and Anti-Money Laundering' is the first book to provide a coherent theoretical structure for Anti-Money Laundering research and practice based on Systems Theory, and the first book to provide an Information Systems perspective on Anti-Money Laundering. Ian Angell is a forecaster of the socio-political and business consequences of Information and Communication Technologies, with over four decades of research experience into the impact of computerization on society. He is an Emeritus Professor of Information Systems in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics. Angell is well known for his pragmatic, down-to-earth and outspoken views on electronic commerce. However, his reputation is based on his radical no-nonsense support of Capitalism in the Information Age, which he portrays in his books The New Barbarian Manifesto, and Flight of the Golden Geese. Angell features routinely in the press and media worldwide (noteworthy are his views on “off-planet banking,” and the future of money), and he is a stalwart of the international lecture circuit - he has stepped in at short notice to cover for the absences of both President Mikhail Gorbachev (for Stern Stewart in Chartes) and Senator Edward Kennedy (for Zefer at Harvard). Angell has acted as a consultant on managing the complexity of information systems to a large number of companies, and to governments and the EU. He was a personal advisor to the Cabinet of Federico Mayor when the latter was Director General of UNESCO, and he has consulted for the Russian Ministry of Science, and the Malaysian National IT Council.

One year ago, we recorded our first ever episode live at the Future of Our Inshore Fisheries Conference. This landmark, inclusive event saw active fishermen, industry leaders, policy makers, regulators, researchers and a number of environmental groups come together in one place, to discuss the future management of the UK’s Inshore Fisheries. This was a vital opportunity for real grassroots knowledge-sharing, where inshore fishermen were able to share their expertise and experience of fishing in the UK. There was an incredible energy in the room and an undeniable excitement around the possibility of collaborative action and change. Five key themes emerged, including co-management and collaborative science, resulting in a comprehensive report and action plan. Now, a year later, we look back at this extraordinary moment with key members of the working group - Barrie Deas of the NFFO and Anne Freeman of Defra - to ask about what’s changed and see where we are now. In this upbeat and optimistic conversation, we ask Barrie and Anne how they feel about the elephant in the room - the global pandemic - and how this curveball has affected progress. “This year was always going to be really hard, because of EU negotiations and preparation for the end of the Transition Period”, Anne states, “None of us foresaw Covid at that point and the terrible impacts that would have on the industry as a whole - particularly the inshore and the shellfish sector. But I think all this work that we have been doing has been really useful in helping the government to understand the sectors in more detail.”Whilst there has been a delay in concrete, tangible progress, both guests point out that the year has seen a vital step in relationships being built between policy and industry, with the collaborative and communicative nature of the conference carving a clear pathway for future work. “Covid has been a good example of co-management in the raw,” highlights Barrie. “The financial support package didn’t just fall out of the sky, it had to be fought for. It was a good example of the regulators and industry working together, on the basis of good information. That’s the essence of co-management!” We reflect on how the energy and enthusiasm of last year’s conference might be re-mobilised after such a difficult year, ask what the Steering Group are doing, moving forward, for inshore fisheries, and discuss complex issues such as the Fisheries Bill, co-management, and quota allocation. “What we’re doing here, at the moment, is creating a framework that will help us move forward”, explains Barrie. “We are making sure an inshore voice is heard, in everything we do”, continues Anne. It is key for fishermen to stay engaged in these discussions: at the heart of the conference was the need for industry-led change. Tune in for an update! Gunilla Svensson is a meteorology professor at Stockholm University, Sweden. She is also member of the Polar Prediction Project's Steering Group and leads the YOPP Processes Task Team. Within her role, she coordinates the YOPPSiteMIP project and the currently ongoing YOPP Targeted Observing Periods, or TOPs, aligned with MOSAiC. Wait a minute – what is YOPPSiteMIP? And what is a Targeted Observing Period? Well, listen to our new bonus episode of the IcePod where we speak with Gunilla about one of the key activities for the Year of Polar Prediction. In our first episode of what we call the TOP series of the IcePod, Gunilla explains not only what these pan-Arctic campaigns of enhanced observations are meant for. She also talks about how the TOP studies of warm air intrusions from the mid-latitudes to the central Arctic are impacted by COVID-19. And: why Polarstern's current location in the Arctic is a paradise for every Arctic scientist. Observations are just one part of the puzzle, and so is modelling. But blending the two allows to see the bigger picture. This is done within the YOPP Supersite Model Intercomparison activity – which is a long title so we just call it YOPPSiteMIP. Here, atmospheric and sea ice data from across the Arctic including MOSAiC, and respective modelling output are currently simultaneously examined. What happens when you get a few people passionate about law, the legal industry and legal innovation in one room and chat – this podcast happens! We launch our podcast series with an insightful, funny and engaging conversation between three amazing legalpreneurs, people who are making change happen for their clients, their people and their firms every day – they also happen to be members of the Chief Innovation Officers Forum (CIOF):  Alison Laird, Head of Innovation and Project Delivery Asia Pacific at Pinsent Masons and inaugural Global Chair of the CIOF Steering Group; Melissa Lyon, Associate Principal, Hive Legal; and Marcus McCarthy, Principal, Nexus Law Group. These folks understand that some in the legal profession are “change challenged,” they have been on their own journeys in coming to the place they find themselves in today and, with thoughtful reflection, empathy and resilience, they work in their law firms and in the profession to push forward, make a difference and uncover the industry's next best practices. We chatted about a lot of things, there's a lot to chat about after all. Topics covered in our conversation included exploring answers to hot button issues like: How you define legal innovation? Can/should you define it? Who should lead innovation in a law firm and in the legal industry? Should innovation be inside to out or outside to in or a bit of both? Can you measure innovation? What are the metrics or KPIs? Does measurement matter? How do you deal with the sceptics, naysayers and blockers to innovation? Does the lawyer personality type mean the legal industry is uniquely change challenged? Can law firms survive if they don't innovate? Should they survive? Where and how do you start to innovate in the legal industry? What will the lawyers and legal practice look like in the next 3- 5 years? Thank you so much Alison, Marcus and Mel – we applaud your work and we are inspired by you!
