My practice moves and connects me to live performance, video documentation, curation, festival programming, editing, filmmaking, and directing. I am a grateful guest of what is colonially know as Vancouver on the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish),and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I hold an MA in Screendance from the London Contemporary Dance School, and am the founding Artistic Director of F-O-R-M (Festival Of Recorded Movement). Through completing my MA, I became interested in making work that challenges and slows our attention. I use film and dance to invite connection and empathy towards the bodies we witness on screen, as well as invite sensation within the bodies of those witnessing. I work independently and collaboratively with artists and communities to engage audiences in work that moves them through embodied and imaginative experiences. I am also involved with videocan as a video archivist and on the research team which is an online archive of Canadian performance directed by Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim. How do you stay true to your instincts and commit to doing what brings you joy — in a world where virility and follower gains are king?Heather Chelan, more popularly known as Heb on the Web, knows first hand how addictive and influential the viral content drug can be. The fun, the fame, and the fear of it all never happening again has led many influencers and businesses down a dark and lonely path. Most of us have had the experience at some point ourselves, even if on a much smaller scale. It feels good to be liked, and feels not-so-good when we aren't getting the love we crave. While we have a lot of fun talking about taco costumes, dresses with pockets, the cost of an oat milk latte, and professional colorful hair, Heb also speaks honestly about her social experience, and what she's done to create from her own heart. We also dip into our own achiever syndrome, discuss the mindset that has helped us break free of the limits an addiction to praise can set on us, and why we should create regardless.A wonderful quote she shared in the episode that is keeping her moving forward in a grounded way is:“You can never connect the dots moving forward but you can always connect them looking backward.”After listening to this episode, journal on these questions:How can I better connect with myself today? What do I need right now?Am I surrounding myself with people who are helping me let out my inner weirdo? Who are the people in my life who allow it to come out and play? What are some moments in my day where I can embrace boredom?Follow Heb on the Web:Instagram: hebontheweb TikTok: hebonthewebSpotify: Listen here

In the second of a series of special episodes featuring autistic creatives, Janet and Ethan welcome the wonderful Daniel Bendelman to the podcast. Daniel is an autistic video artist and PhD student at The University of Kent whose work attempts to expose the power dynamics of autism representation through video art and performance-based installations. In particular, the team discuss Daniel's remarkable installation for 'Fragments', where Daniel performed the writing of his medical history next to a looped sequence from Rain Man, and his compelling short film 'The Life and Death of an Anonymous Autistic Man', produced by DYSPLA in 2018. Daniel reflects on the influences of Michel Foucault and Franz Kafka on his work, and digs into his history as a person diagnosed as Aspergers at a childhood age and how his art practice humanises those experiences. There's also time for discussion around the complicated history of the term 'Aspergers' itself, from its removal from the DSM to the troubling associations of Hans Asperger with the Nazi regime. Umesh found himself leaving university not once but twice, in search of his dream job. In Episode 25, Umesh explains how he was able to learn and create his business away from the allure of university life. Key TakeawaysTake Action - It is easy to get motivation, but unless you take your first step, you will always be left wondering what if. Build Habits - It is so easy to pick up bad habits and put off what it is you want to achieve. Instead try to build good habits to create a routine of you working on learning, practicing or improving your skills or knowledge. Education Can Be Found Anywhere - Yes you can find education in the traditional places, but remember you have a wealth of information avalible to you. Try to work out what it is you need to learn and how you learn best before finding a solution that best fits both of these. Don't Fear Making a Change - If something isn't working, don't put off making a change. The longer you wait, the more time you will waste. Be Confident and Personable - No matter if you are looking to get clients, secure employment in your dream job or even collaborating with someone, you will need to have a certain amount of confidence. Equally, try to be as likable as possible, because we would all rather work with people we like... wouldn't we? Actor Brian Cox reveals what it was like working in his hometown of Dundee for the first time in the television adaptation of the Radio 4 comedy series Bob Servant. And the star of Manhunter explains why, whenever he meets Anthony Hopkins, they never discuss Hannibal Lecter, a role they both played to great acclaim on the big screen. Vikings have a reputation as marauders and invaders. A new exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh aims to show who they really were and how they lived a thousand years ago. Author Janice Galloway has been to the exhibition. David Bowie's new single Where are We Now? caused a sensation when it was released online last Tuesday. The song was accompanied by a video by New York based video artist Tony Oursler, containing his signature image of faces projected onto stuffed dolls. He reflects on the experience of working with the elusive star and how Oursler's wife came to co-star in the video. Produced by Penny Murphy.
