Natalie Cassidy is familiar to us all from EastEnders where she's been playing Sonia since the age of 10!When we met she told me about her love of growing up on a TV set, where age meant nothing and her best friend was June Brown, who was 50 years older than her!Natalie is a mum of two daughters, Eliza and Joanie. My heart melted when she described how she and her husband Marc met when Eliza was just three, and he said he'd fallen in love first with Natalie and then when he met Eliza, he fell in love again.Natalie's about to turn 41 this week. She already has one podcast 'Off the Telly' which she co-hosts with actress Joanna Page and she's just launched a solo podcast 'Life With Nat' which immediately went to number one in the podcast charts! We talked about how grateful we are that we didn't have social media as teenagers and we revisited our teen love of culottes! Also I tried to invite myself on her podcast to talk about teenagers and phones. I have no shame!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We want to start off by saying we're sorry for this one! It's PsydeShow's turn at the wheel and he's driving us all insane with Claire Denis' 2002 addition to the New French Extremity genre, Trouble Every Day. This is a pretty harrowing watch, so we'll understand if you want to skip viewing it yourself, even though we highly recommend it before listening. The film follows two American newlyweds, Shane and June Brown, honeymooning in Paris. Only, Shane has ulterior motives and is in search of a cure for a ravenous disease he's contracted that gives him quite the literal lust for blood. Fair warning, it gets bleak. So this week, prompted by THE PROFESSIONALS we chat a little about cars and Mr Hudson, look back at the career of JUNE BROWN, lurk in the wings of vaudeville, mull over the dark side of certain characters who were once considered to be National Treasures, think about the VOX POP in modern news, and finally ponder over the effectiveness or otherwise of those creatures known as SEA DEVILS. All-in-all, a thrill-packed hour, and I hope you will enjoy the ride. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This week! Claire Denis' Trouble Every Day. From wiki: "Shane and June Brown are an American couple honeymooning in Paris in an effort to nurture their new life together, a life complicated by Shane's mysterious and frequent visits to a medical clinic where cutting edge studies of the human libido are undertaken. When Shane seeks out a self-exiled expert in the field, he happens upon the doctor's wife, another victim of the same malady. She has become so dangerous and emotionally paralyzed by the condition that her husband imprisons her by day in their home. It is Shane's chance encounter with this woman that triggers an event so cataclysmic and shocking it might just lead him to rediscover the tranquility he seeks to restore for himself and his new bride." But first! The ghost of Paul Lynde and the greatness of Bye Bye Birdie. the Haunting of Drusilla and ghosts traveling through mirrors, Drusilla watched Chilly Scenes of Winter. Josh watched Birdemic: Shock and Terror and Possession from 1981. Then they get into the feature, Claire Denis' Trouble Every Day. Content warning: this film contains sexual assault and stars Vincent Gallo. Drusilla isn't the biggest fan of Denis' work or this movie while Josh likes it a little more. They discuss the complicated legacy of Vincent Gallo who was once very cool (Buffalo 66! Brown Bunny! was in a band with Jean-Michele Basquiat!) and became very much not that. Dru loves Beatrice Dalle. Josh was marked by the 90s and that sucks. Johnny Rotten sucks now, too. They discuss the plot and whether or not the movie is sexy. Josh thinks Vincent Gallo is a good actor, but Dru compares him to Joe Dallesandro. Vincent Gallo doesn't understand his lines? They discuss the aesthetics and music of the film. Things shot on digital video are kind of blech. They like the Tindersticks song, though. There are a few cliche art film scenes in this. Josh compares this to Daughters of Darkness, Dru compares it to Comfort of Strangers. They debate the way the film presents bodies and sex and also the way vampires work in this. They compare it to Cronenberg's Crash as well but Crash is a bottom and this is a top. Also, the fucking COMIC SANS OF IT ALL!!! Then they play Have They Seen It? Next week the duo is watching Alex Garland's Men. Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel/

June Brown is 94 today. So to mark her birthday we're re-releasing our special drama 'Missing You' starring June Brown and Sam Barnard. And we're adding a bonus interview with the writer Richard Vergette after the show. Missing You was written specifically for June and Sam - and based on Richard's own personal experience of having a son with Down's Syndrome. Distinct Drama presents...MISSING YOU by Richard VergetteStarring June Brown MBE and Sam BarnardProduced by Ashley Byrne, Iain Mackness and James BrownAn MIM Production for Distinct Nostalgia - More than a Podcast! This 30 minute drama kicks off ‘Generation Games’, a new series of occasional monologues and duologues exploring relationships, friendships and connections across the generational divide. June plays Margey, who against advice, refused to give her son up for adoption when she was told he had Down's syndrome. She has protected William fiercely throughout his life, even when William has preferred not to be protected. Despite the tensions that arose when William demanded his independence, both mother and son remain devoted to each other. Now they can’t see each-other due to the pandemic and the enforced separation causes each of them to reflect on their shared past. Missing You is written by Richard Vergette who says: ‘Being the parent of a young man with Down’s Syndrome I’m aware that the compassionate response we received by medical staff at our son’s birth, wasn’t always the experience of parents from previous generations. Parents like Margey had to fight just for the right to bring up their own child. William is equally formidable and needs to lead his own life – away from his Mother. Richard continues: ‘I’m fortunate enough to have worked with the excellent actor, Sam Barnard, so was delighted when he agreed to play the role of William. When writing the role of Margey I had the voice of June Brown in my head and so asked the producer, Ashley Byrne, “Can we find a June Brown type of actress?”. “How about June Brown?” he replied! I still can’t quite believe that a living legend is playing in a piece I’ve written. They are both brilliant in their respective roles and bring home the frustrations as well as the joys of their characters’ relationship.’Actor Sam Barnard commenting on his part says: "June is such a legend and a hero of mine since I was little. When I was asked to play this role I said "OOH I SAY" and did a little dance of joy!"MIM and Distinct Nostalgia Creative Director Ashley Byrne adds: ‘This is a very touching and thoughtful portrayal and is a tremendous story to kick off our series exploring relationships across the generations. We’ll be bringing more established names together with not so well known talent in a bid to tackle ageism in our society. In broadcasting the trend is to increasingly shove people in age silos and never the twain shall meet but we feel the portrayal of relationships with people across the generations is crucial for social cohesion.’Distinct Nostalgia began in January 2020 and regularly charts. June Brown is best known today for her role as the long-suffering chain-smoking Dot Cotton (now Dot Branning) in the BBC TV soap EastEnders. She arrived on a three month contract in 1985 and is still in the show. She was nominated for a BAFTA in 2008. She celebrates her 90th birthday in February 2017 and has no intention of retiring as acting "keeps her alive". June was born in Suffolk and brought up in a music-loving family. Towards the end of World War Two, she joined up, choosing the WRNS where she worked as a cinema operator showing training films and newsreels to the sailors. She did some acting during that time and after a brief and unsuccessful job in an office, she was one of very few chosen to receive a classical training at the Old Vic Theatre School. From there she joined the Old Vic Theatre Company where she worked with such greats as Edith Evans, Laurence Oliver and Albert Finney. Her roles included Lady Macbeth and Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. She had five children in relatively quick succession and continued acting on TV and the London stage, often putting her youngest in a pram and going in the guard's van on the train to the theatre. Throughout her time on EastEnders she has occasionally ventured away to direct or take part in other television series. In 2009 she stripped down to nothing as Jessie in the stage production Calendar Girls. She was 82. She was awarded an MBE for services to drama and charity in 2008. Producer: Sarah Taylor.
