Long-time Equity listeners and TechCrunch readers should be familiar with LAVCA, and association of capital managers in the Latin America region. We have reported on its data a number of times. Well, it turns out that LAVCA is part of the larger Global Private Capital Association, which keeps tabs on a host of markets that we're working to cover more carefully as startup activity becomes an increasingly global phenomenon. So to cap off the second quarter, and to get our claws into what is going on around the world, we had Cate Ambrose, the CEO of the GPCA on the show to riff with us about Asia and Africa and Latin America and Central and Easter Europe. Here's what we wanted to find out:How wild was the 2021-era venture peak in less mature startup markets? How resilient are smaller startup ecosystems in a more conservative venture and macroeconomic environment? Are we seeing green shoots anywhere in the world? Or put another way, where is the rebound kicking off?We closed with a short discussion on the role of government in startup markets and squeezed in an AI question because how could we not!We have another interview coming your way Friday, so stay tuned! For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website.Equity drops at 7 a.m. PT every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. TechCrunch also has a great show on crypto, a show that interviews founders, one that details how our stories come together and more!
One of the things we love at Mythmakers is to meet new fantasy authors. Hear how she takes inspiration from real history, as well as fairy tales, to produce a story which reads like a twisty spy thriller. You'll never look at Puss in Boots the same way again! Stick around for Lilly and Julia's top tips for fantasy writing.
In part two we'll talk about how I met perceived obstacles with effort, heart and imagination. The seed had been planted for me to apply for financial aid and a paid social work practicum in Easter Europe for the Summer of 2002. In Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. I found the essay I wrote to win the scholarship and practicum. I wanted to read it to you. It's called 'Music Lessons.' We explain the adventures of William Paterson, the tall tales of Welshman Lionel Wafer, the founding of the Company of Scotland and our nations attempt to set up a colony in what we now know as Panama. The simmering tensions between Russia and Ukraine have kept global equities under pressure for days now. Sliding for the fifth consecutive day, the BSE Sensex dropped 383 points while the Nifty50 fell 114 points to settle the day at 58,300 and 17,092 yesterday. Earlier in the day, both these indices had cracked around 1,300 point and 400 points, respectively, in intra-day trade. The developments in Easter Europe roiled global markets as investors monitored the implications of potential sanctions against Russia, and the latter's counter-move, if any. Back home, investors have lost a chunk of their wealth as the benchmarks have skid around 1.5% so far this year. The broader MidCap and SmallCap indices, meanwhile, have dropped up to 13% during this period. Given this, Dhananjay Sinha, managing director and chief strategist at JM Financial Institutional Securities, says retail investors should remain cautious and look at quality large-caps for now. Ambareesh Baliga, who is an independent market analyst, too, says retail investors should use any bounce back to get back into cash. That said, from a year-long perspective, Sinha says the year 2022 could be a year of flattish returns with downwards risks weighing more. And he may not be the only one with this view. Multiple headwinds in the form of Russia-Ukraine crisis, Brent crude oil price at $99 a barrel, prospects of faster-than-expected hike in rates by the global central banks and its impact on bond yields, impending state elections in India, and the fears of a rise in inflation has seen foreign brokerages recalibrate their return expectation from the markets in 2022. Thus, Jefferies has cut its December 2022 target for the Nifty50 to 17,500, which is around 3.5% higher from current levels. Its 10 mean reversion scenarios put the Nifty50 December 2022 in the range of 16,500-18,500 amid near-term risks including threat to liquidity due to LIC IPO, continued foreign selling, and a perception that the RBI might be behind the curve amidst the twin deficit concerns. BofA Securities, too, has cut its December-2022 Nifty target to 17,000 from 19,100 earlier. Thus, calendar year 2022 may give tepid returns to investors after two consecutive years of double-digit gains as outlook for the markets remains indefinite. Watch video
What You'll Learn From This Episode: Hiring the A-players How to make your job post stand out Why you need to hire from Eastern Europe Related Links and Resources: They got an actionable, comprehensive, how to hire remote guide. It's completely FREE, you can head over to https://jobrack.eu and check the resources section. It's literally how they hire. It's all the action step that you need. Summary: Noel Andrews is the owner of JobRack.eu where he helps business owners hire high quality remote team members from Eastern Europe. Working with online businesses of all sizes Noel's superpower is being helpful and friendly and guiding people through one of the hardest things any business owner ever has to tackle….hiring great people. Here are the highlights of this episode: Noel has shared with us that ideally, he works with clients who have an online business that needs to grow, and they need the right people that's going to drive the business. They work a lot with online agencies, SAS businesses, service providers, or basically anyone who can grow through developers, designers, customer service, SEOs, or high-quality assistants. And Noel's team, are helping these folks to hire the A-players, those who's really going to take away the pain from you. Usually, these busy owners or businesses are too busy and therefore not getting things done that they need to and therefore need to hire. Or, they maybe started the hiring process and throwing money on job boards or services, recruiters asking for a big fee. They might end doing the whole hiring process themselves out and hire someone out of desperation and who isn't capable to do the job. They are really not giving enough time and energy to do the hiring. Another mistake that business owners do is not selling the benefits and opportunities to potential candidates. Most try to hire by themselves instead of getting help, but failing to do so. They're not making their job post stand out from the rest. If you are wondering why you need to hire from Eastern Europe, Noel said that there's a cultural alignment with the Western world and in UK. What you get from Easter Europe is high standard of education, great English skills, and really low cost of living. You can give lower salaries but you can still pay them really well from where they are, and you can get great benefits and savings as a business owner. And, they have a work ethic; they work hard and they want to have a stable long-term role. Noel's Valuable Free Action (VFA): If they want to do the hiring themselves and putting it on a job board or post, include a video of you on top of the job post. Introduce yourself, introduce your business, and do 30-60 seconds explaining about the role, what kind of person you are looking for, and you can end it by saying "if this sounds like you, then check out the rest of the details and follow the instructions to apply." Adding a single video to a job post is the single best way to make it stand out and attract the kind of people that you want.

Ever since she was a little kid in Slovakia, Barbara was knitting, crocheting, and operating sewing machines. You see Barbara comes from a long line of Tailors in Easter Europe, so textiles were in her blood. But at age 7, Barabara became a political refugee, escaping communist Slovakia with her family and moving to America. After graduating from FIT and a few stints in the fashion industry, Barbara began repurposing antique textiles from her native Slovakia that were hand-woven by her ancestors. In 2016, she opened up a shop in Asbury Park, NJ selling vintage tote bags, runners, and apparel. All fashioned from her homespun heritage.

Taste of Prague interviews Mark Baker. Mark who now? Yeah, while he may be invisible to many, Mark is a writer of guide books for the Lonely Planet, Fodor’s and Frommer’s, covering mostly Central and Eastern Europe. So if you’re walking past the Charles Bridge and can’t get through because of the crowds, well, that’s kinda Mark’s fault. No, really, he wields a lot of invisible might, steering travelers in the right places and making sure that enjoy the destination to the fullest. We see his guides in the hands of the guests of our Prague food tours all the time. Let me put it this way: the man who covers Slovenia for the Lonely Planer got „knighted“ by the Slovenian government. I will make it one of my top 2020 priority the same thing happens to Mark in the Czech Republic.Mark is a fascinating guy. Hailing from Ohio and having majored in journalism at the University of Miami, he worked in Vienna for The Economist group and Bloomberg when the Berlin Wall fell. Then he got to Prague on a writing assignment and… well, never left would not be entirely correct, but he’s still here 28 years later. He was one of the founders of the iconic Ouky Douky coffee shop / book store that was the ground zero for the exact community and young local intellectuals (heck, I was one of them) in the Holesovice district. He is also the author of multiple articles about Central and Easter Europe for the likes of the BBC, the Wall Street Journal or the National Geographic. Finally, he has a fantastic website with long-form posts about his experiences living in and traveling through Central and Eastern Europe. It’s a true wealth of information and great writing: don’t blame me if you spend long minutes or hours browsing through the posts. But back to the interview. When you think about it, writing guide books seems to be the perfect job: somebody pays you to travel and you write about it. But of course, on second thought, this ain’t no vacation. So this episode of the podcast tries to look into the mechanics of writing a guide book. Who is it for, how is it researched, what is the brief, and how do you write it. And also, we look at the future of the printed guide book in the age of the internet and the smartphone app. Mark also has a few comments on the Czechs and Czechia, having lived here - on and off - since 1991.Here’s some of the things we talked about with Mark:How do you land a job as a travel writer for a big publisher? Is writing guide books a viable job going forward? What have been the major changes since Mark started writing guide books?Who pitches a destination to write about? The publisher or the writer? What is the „refresh interval“ of guide books? How long does it take for a guide book to be updated? Is there a target group defined when you write a guidebook? An „ideal reader“?How is research travel for guide books organized? How does a guide book writer research for his own research trip:Do national tourism boards get involved in the guide book creation? Is the guide book author free to choose his POIs?Do travel writers get writer’s block?Do editors get in the way of a guide book author?Do locals ever get to have a say what’s in a guide book?Has the definition of the „assumed user“ changed to include multiple ethnicities, genders, travelers with mobility issues?Do guide books contribute to „over tourism“?How have the Czechs changed since the early nineties? What is the one thing Mark misses from the US?What is the guilty pleasure Mark likes to eat?

THIS EPISODE IS IN MEMORY OF OUR CHILDREN WHO DIED OF HIV/AIDS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, OR WHO BECAME ORPHANS BECAUSE OF IT. IT IS IN MEMORY OF OUR NEIGHBORS, WHO LIVED ON THE STREETS OF OUR TOWN AND DIED THERE THIS PAST WINTER. REST IN PEACE. THANK YOU FOR COMING OUR WAY! Episode 24 of Hatradio! is a first of its kind. It is a 1-man show, Just me!. I quite enjoyed doing this segment. I enjoyed it because it gave me the chance to talk and hear my own history and how tikun olam (repairing the world) was so prevalent and a lead up to the creation of Ve'ahavta. Doing this show was therapeutic. It allowed revisit my past and 'hang out' with my zaidies and boobies (grandfathers and grandmothers). I adored telling the story of my mother, Gitel, walking through Queens Park with her father on Shabbat, seeing that image in my head....the squirrels running past them, the two of them sitting on a bench giggling and telling stories about the old country. I loved talking about my father, Shragah Phyvle, and his two brothers, all of whom were community builders, and cared deeply about the Jewish people and Israel. I think when you hear about my family, their journey from Easter Europe and the solid lives they made in the West, you might consider aspects of your own life, your parents and grandparents. You might smell the mothballs in their homes as we did in our grandparent's home, and recall the communication challenges you had with the Boobie, as we did. They were warriors though. They worked arduously. They were beautiful spirits. They lived their lives with verve and purpose and truckloads of love. And then their is the second half of the show about the genesis of Ve'ahavta. Man, those were something. They were glorious and golden years. Everything shone. I remember telling my girlfriend at the time, Roz, to remember the coat-hanger we'd purchased for our new office because it was the first coat-hanger of the first Jewish humanitarian organization ever. In this segment you'll hear about our homeless initiatives including our Mobile Jewish Response to the Homeless and our Ve'ahavta Street Academy for the Homeless. You'll learn about our international work including medical missions to Guyana in Bartica and the rainforests, and the outstanding work we did with our teams through the brilliant efforts of Dr. Michael Silverman. You'll discover our successes at the Howard Hospital in Zimbabwe, through the tenacity of Scarborough born, Dr. Paul Thistle who has made a life for himself there. Folks, we met superstars. We were mentored by them. We shared with them. We were exposed to divergent cultures, different peoples, the children! Oh, the children! Our toil was holy in its own way and I loved every minute of it. Every frickin minute. The greatest challenge doing this podcast was being articulate throughout the 1 hour and 40 minutes but mostly telling a good story, that flowed, was cogent and consistent - that made sense. Howard and I worked on the post-production and while it wasn't the most editing we'd ever done we had to listen closely to ensure a poetry of words. And I think we figured it out. I think you'll enjoy the show. Have a listen and let me know what you think. Share this link as I am hoping people will be encouraged through it to pursue their own dreams and enhance our world and those whom we share this planet with. 'm hoping our community of listeners here, will see their blessings and recognize what we have, versus what we lack. That is not easy, but it is do-able. Hatradio! The show that schmoozes (with regular folk). ___________________________________________________________________________ Thank you to David Nefesh for creating the Hatradio! song. David's been my brother since we're eight year old. We adopted each other. He's talented as hell. Do a google search on David Nefesh and listen to his music. He has a voice of an angle and his lyrics live. And thank you to Howard Pasternack, my friend, for his post-production work which he does consistently every Thursday afternoon - Thursdays with Howard. We have amazing times together, editing but more so, attempting to understand the world. He's a fine teacher and cerebral partner. Well done Howard! Podcast Ep 11 | Power of apparel | Struggle of startup life in Easter Europe| by KCV
This Mother's Day Dave Smethurst shared about Mary the Mother of Jesus, and her role in caring for him as a child, and then her experience in having to watch him die. Mary then saw her son raised from the dead, and then lived and ministered in Ephesus with the apostle John who had care for her. Dave Smethurst then went on to share some of his experiences in caring for many orphans in Easter Europe and his evangelistic work with athletes. This is an encouraging message to mothers, but also to all people who love Christ.
