We're back with another one of our favorite kinds of episodes: real stories of real people doing really cool things in their small towns. This episode features Terry Sando, a retired Air Force officer who's built a brewery in his small town of Hillsboro, ND. We love this story because Terry was inspired to build a business to serve his community…so he did! He's kept the community at the heart of everything he does, and he's such a great example of what can happen with a dream, willingness to learn, and lots of hard work. About Terry: I was born and raised in Valley City, ND. In the summers, I worked on my grandparents' farm south of Rogers, ND. I graduated from Valley City High School and went to college before joining the Air Force in 1979. I did 5 ½ years of enlisted time with my final assignment being a crew member on the B-52 at Grand Forks AFB. Duties included pulling nuclear alert and flying training missions. In November of 1984, I joined the 119th, the Happy Hooligans to become an Intelligence Officer and trained at Lowery AFB in Denver. My son Travis was born during my assignment there and my wife Deb wouldn't tell me on the phone if it was a boy or girl! Happily, I was granted emergency leave and flew back to Grand Forks to see my son. I had different assignments at the 119th and returned to active duty to gain space operations background for future Air Guard missions in 1998. During my six years in Colorado Springs, I was assigned to Peterson AFB, Schriever AFB, and Cheyenne Mountain. 9/11 happened while I was stationed at AFSPC (Air Force Space Command) and I was selected to help stand up NorthCom. I was the first Guardsman to be qualified to stand watch at Cheyenne Mountain for NORAD/NorthCom. It was my most challenging assignment, but also my best assignment during my career. My next assignment in 2004 was at the National Guard Bureau in Washington D.C. and from there I went to the Air War College at Maxwell AFB where I got my Master of Strategic Studies. My final assignment was Plans and Requirements at 1st Air Force at Tyndall AFB. During this assignment, I grew an appreciation for craft beer brewing. I had a coworker who was a great homebrewer, and he got me interested in learning to brew beer. I had to put it into my bucket list of things to do when I retired. I retired in November of 2009 and came home to Grand Forks. After retirement I had jobs at the University of North Dakota as the Emergency Manager, Grand Forks Region EDC working on building the UAS ecosystem, a Norwegian company eSmart doing UAS operations for utility line inspections, and finally Mobile Recon a small UAS startup company. I decided to get into brewing in 2019 and started construction of a brew pub in Hillsboro. This became Goose River Brewing, and the pub has been open for two years. Two beta batches of beer were done in July of this year, so we're officially brewing! Part of the goal was to have a blue-collar craft beer lovers social gathering location that would help make Hillsboro's downtown a destination. We are working on building relationships with our local malt barley growers. We also have been giving our spent grain to a local cattle grower to use in the cattle feed ration. The pandemic had a big impact on raising the cost of construction and pushing out the opening date. My goal is to build a local team that will take over operations and then I can slow down and take advantage of retirement. Craig holds a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and has earned certifications in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design and Infrastructure Protection from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. The 2022 mpox outbreak has taught public health authorities a lot about the value of working with communities on important areas like testing, vaccination, and risk communication. Lessons that can be applied to other disease outbreaks.Mpox is back in the news; there are sporadic clusters of cases in our region, and, in Central and West Africa, two strains of the virus continue to cause suffering and death. In this episode, we speak to Rosamund Lewis, Emergency Manager & Technical Lead for the global mpox response at WHO Headquarters, about the current situation. Cristiana Salvi, who leads the Risk Communication and Community Engagement unit for WHO regional Office for Europe explains the importance of community insights in the mpox response. We also hear from epidemiologist Mateo Prochaska Nunez on the combination of factors that brought the outbreak under control and the measures needed to keep the virus in check.

On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America passing over Mexico, the United States and Canada. This is no doubt one of nature's most awe inspiring events. The moon passes between the sun and the earth completely blocking the face of the sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. And while the skies will be graced with this celestial spectacle, at the same time, millions will be captivated across the United States. The day will be filled with festivals and revelers who traveled from far and wide to view the total eclipse in the path of totality. So, on today's episode, we're diving deep into the science behind the phenomenon and general safety precautions with experts from NASA. But then we'll take it back to earth and explore the meticulous planning efforts undertaken by Ohio and Indiana Emergency Management, just two of the states - from Texas to Maine, that are getting ready for April 8th.
Introduction Chief Jorge A. Rodriguez is the Emergency Management Coordinator/Director for the El Paso Office of Emergency Management, with over 25 years of public safety, emergency management and homeland security experience. In a dual capacity, he also serves as an Assistant Fire Chief with the El Paso Fire Department with a program portfolio that includes special operations, aircraft rescue and firefighting, homeland security grants and the Office of Emergency Management. He managed the response and recovery when El Paso was the center of multiple protracted back-to-back disasters: a domestic terrorism attack/mass shooting in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic when El Paso was the global epicenter, and the mass migration humanitarian crises of 2019, 2022 and 2023. He holds both a Master of Public Administration with a focus on Leadership and a BA in Political Science with a focus on Intelligence and National Security from the University of Texas at El Paso. Introduction Art Powers is the Senior Principal for Emergency Preparedness & Response at ExxonMobil. He is a past coordinator of the ExxonMobil Americas Regional Response Team and has worked in various leadership roles in ExxonMobil's US Pipeline and Distribution operations over his 25 years with the company. Art is an IAEM Certified Emergency Manager and obtained a Master of Science in Emergency Management in 2008 and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation in 1993, both from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Introduction Tina Kuhr is an Emergency Management Leader in the Nuclear Industry with the following experience: • Emergency Plan, Emergency Plan Program Procedure and Emergency Plan Implementing Procedure maintenance • Emergency preparedness regulatory change process • Drill and Exercise evaluation and critique report preparation • Training Emergency Organization Members Tina currently serves as the Emergency Preparedness Program Lead for GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy. She supported the transition from event based to position based emergency response procedures, including preparing regulatory change justifications. She is currently converting procedures used by her site's Fire/HAZMAT/EMT responders to our company's standard format. She ensures that emergency response facilities are maintained in a state of readiness and coordinate training for the new Emergency Organization Members. Prior to coming to GEH in 2019, she worked in Nuclear Emergency Preparedness at Duke Energy for ~25 years. There she developed and maintained fleet standard nuclear emergency response procedures and emergency preparedness program procedures for six nuclear stations and the corporate office, including preparing regulatory change justifications. Her accomplishments included: • Reducing the number of nuclear emergency response procedures and emergency preparedness program procedures by 75% by implementing standard procedures across the company following a merger. • Updating surveillance procedures for the common Emergency Operations Facility to include requirements for the three additional sites and performing those surveillances. • Revising the standard emergency response procedures based on lessons learned from drills and exercises following implementation. Before the merger she standardized nuclear emergency preparedness program procedures for the Duke Power fleet and maintained the procedures in the common EOF, incorporating drill and exercise lessons learned and industry best practices. Prior to that, she was the corporate EP “group,” responsible for projects of a generic nature such as bringing Oconee Nuclear Station into the common EOF, which required prior approval by the NRC Commissioners and moving the EOF from one building to another without prior NRC approval.
