Jono Manson is one of the godfathers of the NYC jam band scene, an influential presence in the early days when bands like Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors were cutting their teeth. A longtime singer, songwriter and producer, Jono has an impressive list of credits and he's one of those guys who always seems to be working on something. He's released two albums here in 2023, including Stars Enough to Guide Me, his latest solo album -- and also, Bootlegger Days, a collaboration with John Popper. He joined Matt to discuss a wide range of topics, including those early days in NYC, some recent work with Eric Ambel, adventurous times in the '90s out on the road with the H.O.R.D.E. festival and lots more.Jono will be on the road starting this month for a lengthy series of shows with Blues Traveler in addition to his own solo headlining dates. It's been quite a while since he's been out for such a lengthy tour, so go see him if he's coming your way! Our thanks to Jono for this conversation, which was a lot of fun!
Over the last couple decades, Sarah Borges has built a loyal following, playing live shows and releasing several albums. Her first record, Silver City, was praised by NPR's David Dye for showcasing “an unusual knack for mixing alternative rock with country” She stays very busy writing, recording and touring – but in early 2020, Sarah, like many musicians, became isolated from concert halls and even recording studios. Missing that audience connection and camaraderie of working with other artists, she continued to write and record from home, singing vocals into her iPhone utilizing her clothes closet as a vocal isolation booth. Stay tuned to hear more about how that experience took shape in the form of her latest album, Together Alone. The track you're hearing, “Wouldn't Know You” is from that album. As I’ve stated before, I have a special folder where I toss in various great cover tunes as I come across them. It was pretty much perfect timing that my folder became “show-length” just in time for this holiday weekend. What better way to begin the summer with revved-up remakes of some of our favorite tunes? Plus, I’ll take any opportunity to give more airplay to my pal Dave Scarbrough, especially when the one remake on his brand new album, Happy Ever After, is a Paul Westerberg tune! You all should check this album out! Also included in this broadcast are tracks from Steve Earle’s new tribute to his friend and mentor, Jerry Jeff Walker, Eric Ambel and Greg Hoy’s remakes of Neil Young tunes, The William Loveday Intention’s teardown of Bob Dylan tunes, and a few of our friends (The Short Fuses, New Rocket Union) from Minneapolis! Oh, and we have the exclusive covers by the Hoodoo Gurus that are only found on the vinyl version of their new Chariot of the Gods album. Speaking of Minneapolis, Cindy Lawson’s fabulous new record on Rum Bar Records, New Tricks, includes a tune written by the recently-deceased Lori Wray. I’m not […]

Speedfossil, Luckiest Man In the WorldBrad Marino, [She's] Doing Her ThingMike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs, Electric GypsyMike Campbell w Ian Hunter, Dirty JobSarah Borges · Eric Ambel, Something to DoHamish Anderson, Everything Starts AgainJesse Daniel feat. The veteran singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer — known to his friends, associates and bandmates as Roscoe — has spent the past three and a half decades building a powerful body of raw, personally charged music that's earned him a far-reaching reputation as a rock ‘n' roll original, while keeping him busy in his parallel careers as producer, sideman and collaborator.Find out more about Eric at ericambel.comOpening track – “Wasting My Time” by Sarah Borges sarahborges.comBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! It's hard to think of a sector that was not impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. But, thanks to innovative thinking and persistence, the beat went on for many industries and establishments, including Cowboy Technical Services in Brooklyn. Eric Ambel and Tim Hatfield opened their recording studio more than 20 years ago. On this week's Cityscape, Eric and Tim share the story behind Cowboy Technical Services, how music production has evolved over the years, and what steps they took to make sure COVID-19 didn't silence the making of new albums.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Jack Grace! The man Jerry Lee Lewis once likened to “that Cash kid, but good” has enjoyed a long and varied career. Jack Grace is that man: a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who's been touring and recording for over 25 years. His duet with Norah Jones, “Bad Wind Blowing” was a standout tune on his last recording, Everything I Say Is A Lie, produced by Joan Jett and Steve Earle's former guitarist Eric Ambel. He's performed with a diverse collection of artists, like the aforementioned Lewis as well as Doc Watson, Fishbone, Junior Brown, The Meters and has even shared the bill with Merle Haggard.

For Orphans- Bruce Springsteen, House Of The Thousand Guitars- Willie Nile House Of The Thousand Guitars- Shemekia Copeland, Clotilda's On Fire - Shemekia Copeland, Under My Thumb - Jeremiah Johnson, Cherry Red Wine - Rick Fines, That's What Makes You Strong- Eric Ambel, It Ain't Easy Bein' Cool- Eric Ambel, Run Through The Jungle- Eric Ambel, 12 Step Program (To Quit You Babe) - Spanking Charlene, Burn It Down- Spanking Charlene, Find Me Out- Emily Duff, We Ain't Goin' Nowhere- Strung Like A Horse, Crazy Like Me
My interview with my friend Eric Ambel, the longtime friend of Americana music, and a part of the part of the great "roots rock scare" of the 80s. A great producer and guiarist. This week I sit down with guitarist/producer Eric Ambel in Brooklyn to mine through the finer points of a career built on desire, attitude, and talent. After all, you don't get to play with the likes of Joan Jett or Steve Earl by pigeon-holing yourself into one style. An accomplished guitarist, producer, and club owner, Eric's journey in the music business may have started in the mid-west and taken him around the world, but his heart has been firmly planted in NYC since the mid-80's. With a career like his, we did a lot of bouncing around, so buckle-up and get ready to learn from one of the greats.
Eric Ambel plays tracks from Lakeside and talks about working with Jimbo Mathus, why the album is vinyl only, and the new Cowboy Technical studios. "Eric Ambel makes a quicker and looser rock & roll album (Ep295)" originated from Americana Music Show.
Sarah Borges plays tracks from Good & Dirty and talks about “just banging out” the record w/ Eric Ambel, funding EP, and escaping her kids with rock & roll. "Sarah Borges escapes from the kids with rock & roll (Ep294)" originated from Americana Music Show.
