He's also produced albums by his wife, Marti Jones. I was a big fan of Guadalcanal Diary, so when Murray Attaway appeared on Frets back in 2022, I could hardly believe I was talking with their lead singer and main songwriter. The band released four major label albums throughout the 1980s and Murray went on to record In Thrall, a solo album that features Jackson Browne, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, Aimee Mann, Steve Nieve, Sid Page and Benmont Tench among others. Murray has also composed music for independent film scores and his songs have been featured in many films and television shows. Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast

After a critical success with Murmur, R.E.M. again teamed with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon for their sophomore effort, Reckoning. In some ways it was more of the same, but a slightly rawer, rocking sound became evident as well.

I had the pleasure of talking to Peter again recently, this time about his soon to be released solo album, The Face of 68. The new year arrived and “Auld Lang Syne” bubbled up to the top of playlists all over the land. There are so many versions of this classic, which speaks to the importance of remembering friends and happy times from years past, and it reminded me to pause and reflect on this series, which has featured a great many musical acquaintances and friends (and acquaintances who became friends) over a fairly wide span of time; Southern Songs and Stories began as a video documentary with Aaron Burdett (now in the band Steep Canyon Rangers) in 2015, and transitioned to a podcast in spring of 2017. So much has changed over this time, with both the artists profiled here as well as the podcast itself. In 2018, we partnered with the Osiris Media folks to share the series on their platform, as well as on the internet station Bluegrass Planet Radio, and later with public radio WNCW, where you can hear capsule versions of episodes on air. Thinking back to those early episodes, it is impossible not to feel the tug of nostalgia for that time -- it was an exciting beginning, full of hope for putting some of the music I loved onto the world stage of an emerging format, and a deep and rich period to experience and take part in the music scene in and around western North Carolina. I thought about David Childers after learning about his new collaboration with Abe Partridge, titled The Satan, You're a Liars. And so, to kick off 2025, here is a listen back to one of our first episodes on a musical hero to Abe Partridge, the Avett Brothers, and many, many more. (L to R) Joe Kendrick, David Childers and Dolph Ramseur at David's home after taping their interview 10-17-17 David Childers is a western North Carolina singer songwriter who has been a lawyer, a poet, a man who has always made music, and is also now a visual artist. We'll get to conversations from legendary producer Don Dixon, who worked with David again on his 2017 record Run Skeleton Run, and talk with his son, longtime band member and collaborator Robert Childers, as well as the head of Ramseur Records and Avett Brothers manager, Dolph Ramseur, plus Avett Brothers member Bob Crawford, and writer, musician and WNCW radio host Carol Rifkin. We'll also highlight David's music and the music that inspired him, and delve into many insights into Southern culture along the way. Songs heard in this episode:“Jesus Said” by Abe Partridge, from The Satan, You're a Liars“Johnny Got A Mohawk” by David Childers & The Mount Holly Hellcats, excerpt“Radio Moscow” by David Childers, from Run Skeleton Run, excerpt “Jesus Set Me Free” by David Childers, from Serpents Of Reformation, excerpt“It's Bad You Know” by R.L. Burnside, from Come On In, excerpt“Femme Fatale” by The Velvet Underground, from The Velvet Underground & Nico, excerpt“Brown Eyed Handsome Man” by Chuck Berry, from After School Session, excerpt“Belmont Ford” by David Childers, from Run Skeleton Run, excerpt“Collar and Bell” by David Childers, from Run Skeleton Run, excerpt“Price I Had To Pay” by David Childers, from Room 23, excerpt“Little Cindy” by David Childers & The Modern Don Juans , from Burning In Hell, excerptThank you for listening! We hope you can help spread awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice, so easy! You can find us on Apple here, and Spotify here — hundreds more episodes await you. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating, and where it is an option, a review! It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you connect with artists like David Childers, Abe Partridge, and many more we have profiled that are at your fingertips. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks also to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs — you can link to his music here. After co-producing R.E.M.'s Murmur and Reckoning, Don Dixon got calls from other bands, often southern and jangly, seeking his services. He produced three albums by Guadalcanal Diary, another Georgia band, but it was his work with New Jersey's the Smithereens that took him to another level. It also prompted Nirvana to ask him about producing Nevermind. Dixon was pursuing his own career as well while thinking U.S. labels had slighted his previous band, Arrogance. What happened when the head of Enigma Records approached him in a European airport about releasing the song "Praying Mantis"? What unorthodox scheme did Dixon propose to the label in lieu of releasing albums? Why does he, of all people, think recording ruined music? Dixon has enough great stories and insights to fill two episodes. This is the second.

Don Dixon already had spent 13 years playing, singing and writing with the North Carolina indie band Arrogance when he joined Mitch Easter to co-produce R.E.M.'s trailblazing first two albums, Murmur and Reckoning. He went on to produce the first two crunchy-and-sweet Smithereens albums plus music from Guadalcanal Diary, Matthew Sweet, Marshall Crenshaw and Marti Jones, to whom he remains married. His own infectious “Praying Mantis” got him some airplay as well. Did he see himself more as a soul singer, a songwriter, a bassist or producer? What are the secrets to being a strong producer? What happened when Nirvana asked him about producing Nevermind? Dixon has enough great stories and insights to fill two episodes. This is the first.

This week, we celebrate the beginning of the '90s (Or was it the end of the '80s? You be the judge.) When MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips ruled the airwaves. When Uncle Gregg found some direction and joined the Navy. When teenage Brett co-founded his first band, Empty Glass. And when our special guest, power pop legend Jamie Hoover was caught in a flurry of activity, releasing his debut solo album Coupons, Questions And Comments and prepping for The Spongetones' 1991 third full length, Oh Yeah! Formed in 1979 and very much influenced by the British Invasion, Charlotte, North Carolina's The Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting, Beatlesque vocals. In his 2007 authoritative book Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated The Spongetones' Beat And Torn (a CD containing 1982's Beat Music LP - one of Brett's all time favorites - and 1984's Torn Apart mini-LP) at #24 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time. The band features the triple threat of talented singers and songwriters: Jamie Hoover, Pat Walters and Steve Stoeckel. In addition to The Spongetones, Jamie has shared the stage and recorded with Don Dixon and Marti Jones, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bill Lloyd, Emitt Rhodes, and Ray Paul, among others. The Big Mates discuss small waveforms, portmanteaus, Muse, and Murmur by R.E.M.Adam, Steve, and Lucas continue their deep dive into the career and discography of R.E.M. by starting their track-by-track analysis on the band's debut album, released in 1983. They talk about the writing and recording process, the context surrounding the songs, and offer up analysis, opinions, and thoughts from three differing perspectives on music, from being deeply into analysis and music, to not caring for art or critique, and everything in between. They touch on how the band found their producers in Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, their decision to sound like a different band, how the band write their songs, and the legacy of Radio Free Europe. They do this whilst also giving their thoughts and opinions on the album as a whole, the first couple of tracks, and how they see this fitting into the band's discography going forward. How did the band evolve from their EP? Our favorite vinyl records from bands or artists filed under "G". And...GO! In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2022, idiot basement-dwelling, award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-first episode. After majoring in Visual Arts at Interlochen Arts Academy in 1996, Don went on to Savannah College of Art and Design, completing his education at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan, and graduating with a BFA in Animation and Digital Media. Don's first job was at WMS Gaming in Chicago doing animation in both 2D and 3D. Currently, Don works in Dallas, Texas, at Reel FX working on feature films such as, The Book of Life, Free Birds, Rock Dog, Sherlock Gnomes and most recently Scoob. Recently he has begun an art collection entitled Pain and Process. Stepping back for a moment of reflection, Kyle Davis realizes now, perhaps more than ever, that music can be a vehicle for change. No stranger to success, his music has received attention from Sony Records and Phil Ramone via Don Dixon, four stars from Rolling Stone and a cover feature in Billboard Magazine calling him “one of the best unsigned artists.” In addition, Davis has shared the stage with the likes of Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Shawn Colvin, The Wallflowers and Sheryl Crow. While Davis has received extensive accolades over the course of his career, Make it Count is about more than simply making music. Woven together with the wisdom of life’s profound experiences, Make it Count offers a timeless reflection encouraging listeners to make the most of the time that they have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCUZ1GMyxVk&feature=emb_title   Created by Mikan Media, the music video for the title track, “Make it Count,” expresses Davis’s amazement at our inability to affect time’s linear motion. Struck by nostalgia upon looking at an old photograph, the video features Davis driving by the house where he grew up, speaking to the creases in each of our timelines while paying homage to Davis’s personal history; the song lyrics note how his family disintegrated a little after they moved and also serves as a place for Davis to say he misses his Dad - something he needed. Illustrating shared human experiences, the music video also features a few real stories including one of grief through the eyes of a woman looking upward in a church, holding a picture of her brother who took his life; it also tells of  rebirth and life through the eyes of a young mother with her child. Notably, the song expresses how we get many chances but each one only once.   Produced by Scott Lane and Stewart Myers, Make It Count features Daniel Clark on organ, piano, and whirly, Charles Authur on mandolin, pedal and steel, Carter Gravatt [Carbon Leaf] on mandolin, acoustic, pedal steel, Mike Durham and Scott Lane playing electric guitars, as well as drummers, John O’Reilly and Pinson Chanselle, and Stewart Myers and Scott Lane on bass, as well as backing vocalists Kenneka Cook and Scott Lane.   Davis began recording in his early 20s, spawning a string of albums -- Kyle Davis, Waiting For You, Raising Heroes, Don’t Tell the World, and River City Gang -- which harnessed national attention and effectively expressed a keen sense of melody, infectious energy and hooks that sank in quickly and refused to let go. These days, Davis is more eager than ever to rekindle his career, and remains inspired by his love of music and a desire to connect with others.

Despite being a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter in his own right, Don Dixon's legacy as an important figure in American rock was cemented when he co-produced the first two albums by R.E.M. (Murmer and Reckoning) with Mitch Easter. Helping to bring their sound to the world changed everything. He would go on to produce other excellent artists like Guadalcanal Diary, the Smithereens, Marshall Crenshaw and Matthew Sweet, while also forging his own solo path with excellent tunes like "Praying Mantis" and "A Million Angels Sigh." He's still at it today continuously releasing new albums, producing up and coming artists, and collaborating with his wife, the acclaimed singer/songwriter Marti Jones.  In this chat we discuss his long and excellent solo career as well as the stories behind the greats he produced. Enjoy!

I first became aware of Greg Calbi in 1983 when he mastered the first Pressure Boys album for us by recommendation from Mitch Easter and Don Dixon. At the time I remember distinctly not understanding exactly what the mastering process even entailed.  Of course over the years as formats have changed, that process has evolved considerably... but Greg is still considered one of the preeminent mastering engineers in the field.     My conversation with Greg discusses his early days with artists like John Lennon and David Byrne, as well as detailing some of his approaches when working with clients.
