On this week's episode we look a one of the finest songwriters to come out of Texas, Guy Clark, and his 1975 debut LP Old No. 1.  While Clark is considered one of the great county and folk songwriters of the latter half of the 20th Century, he is also one of the least appreciated when it comes to recording his own songs. On Old No. 1, he records his own songs, many of which had already been made famous by the likes of the Everly Brothers and Jerry Jeff Walker, among many others. Originally recorded in a way that did not meet Clark's vision, that version was ultimately scrapped. The version that was released was essentially a collection of demos,  that took on new life when guests musicians and friends such as Rodney Crowell, Emmy Lou Harris, Johnny Gimble, Steve Earl, and David Briggs joined in. The album puts the focus squarely where it belongs, on the songwriting and provides a wonderful framework for Clark's poetic and reflective storytelling. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Writing Supplement Copy, with Steve Earl

If you'd like to find out about one of the largest and most lucrative niches in copywriting, today's show is just for you. Supplement copy is that niche, and our guest today is an expert on writing copy and building offers for health supplements. Steve Erl has written copy for some of the best-known names in the business. His clients include Newmarket Health, Dr. Al Sears, Pure Health Research, BioTrust, and many others. Supplement companies can grow very quickly. Steve has been writing copy and developing offers for a skincare and pet brand that has grown from $5 million to $100 million in the last four years. With his help, of course. Steve's been writing copy full-time for nine years, and recently started a couple businesses himself he told us about on the show—mentoring, and a newsletter on supplement copy—which may be of interest to you if you decide to get deeper into this part of copywriting yourself. First, though, Steve's walked us through three of his most important experiences and lessons, to give you an idea of what the world of writing supplement copy is like. Steve told us about a seemingly terrifying experience which was a blessing in disguise—copy that got sent back from his client after four weeks which had, in his words, “the heart ripped out of it.” But what happened next was jaw-dropping and eye-opening. The next lesson came from a much bigger win. His copy was so good, the copy chief said, that it was outpulling the control. But oddly enough, it didn't become the control. Steve shared the interesting information he picked up from that one. Writing copy in the supplement field can make a writer gun-shy, because of all the compliance requirements and the knowledge that sooner or later, there will be a lawyer looking over your copy. But what Steve learned was, don't write for that lawyer—write to sell the product, and let the lawyer do their job later. Third important lesson. Steve just started an email newsletter called Supps Copy Chief. He told us about it, and you can find out more here: https://suppscopychief.com Reach out to Steve here: steve@suppscopychief.com Download.

On this Richard Bennett interview, GREAT stories about playing with Mark Knopfler, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, Helen Reddy, Jim Stafford, Glen Campbell, Steve Earl, Al Casey… his unique approach to writing and recording, a difficult low point that found Richard struggling for almost a year, becoming a top producer and realizing he had to stop… how he went from playing dingy beer joints at 14, to playing on the most desirable sessions and touring the world, by “falling forward”... favorite musicians he’s enjoyed playing with, and the ONE musician who taught him more than he could ever have imagined… 2 toughest decisions he’s ever made, humility, kindness, eating well and carrying less on your shoulders. INCREDIBLE conversation, what a lovely guy Richard Bennett is THE most successful side man I’ve had on this show. He’s also as humble as he is talented. He’s been Mark Knopfler’s guitar player in the studio and on the road since 1994 (26 yrs), and spent 17 years before that as Neil Diamond’s guitar player - again, both studio and touring. Here’s a very small sample of the people he’s played with since his first session in 1968. Bear in mind, for most of these artists, Richard played on several to many of their records: Eric Anderson, Big Al Anderson, Al Casey, David Cassidy, Partridge Family, Steve Earl, Vince Gill, Billy Joel, Dave Mason, Mac McAnally, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Lee Roy Parnell, Helen Reddy, Jim Stafford, Nancy Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Weird Al, Duane Eddy, Glen Campbell, the Ventures & about a dozen soundtracks including The Wrecking Crew documentary and one of my favorite movies, Westworld. He’s also produced LOADS of records for major artists, and released 6 excellent instrumental CDs of his own. Steve Earl, CEO of Done For You, Inc. Founded in 2008, DFY has now been serving our customers for 10 years.  DFY was founded on the principle that real estate should be something you DO, not just simply something you LEARN about. DFY was founded in an era where billions of dollars were being spent on real estate education, and on retirement plans, but those worlds seemed to be mutually exclusive. We came together, and had the crazy idea, that if we could actually help our customers DO real estate, by doing the majority of the work for them, then our customers might actually have a shot of creating a real retirement where their income could be replaced residually, and real estate could free them financially. With our customer first philosophy, we have been now been helping customers, from coast to coast, invest in consistent and predictable real estate, and helping them replace their income one real estate investment at a time. https://dfy-realestate.com/

Her first property was a success, but finding a second good deal was a real challenge. All of that changed when she met Steve Earl who introduced her to our Done For You process and shared a way of real estate investing that went beyond properties located in your backyard. You may have encountered an argument against investing in real estate because it’s not liquid. But for Kelly, liquidity is one of the main reasons why she got into real estate in the first place!“I believe single-family residential is about as liquid as it gets.” - Kelly FasterlingThe question of liquidity of real estate is particularly interesting, and there’s a lot of factors at play you need to consider. Welcome to the very first episode of our brand new Replace Your Income podcast. My name is Kevin Clayson, and today, my partner, Steve Earl, and I will share how we started our industry-defying business, Done For You Real Estate.Today’s real estate industry is riddled with misconceptions, with new investors being overwhelmingly encouraged to swing for the fences. It may sound exciting to some, but it’s a poor “strategy.” And definitely not something you’d want to stake your retirement on. The reality is most Americans simply can’t afford to swing for the fences - the consequences of striking out can be devastating. You could lose everything you’ve worked so hard for. When Steve and I met a long time ago, we both were both drawn to a more conservative approach, revolved around replacing your income one property at a time. Our investment model was inspired by Moneyball, a sporting phenomenon that redefined baseball and showed that there’s a way of being competitive despite operating with a low budget. Using a safe strategy of investing in single-family residential real estate, we founded Done For You Real Estate. With over 13 years of experience and 4000 transactions, we proved that a “get rich slow” model, focused on hitting singles works time and time again. We were never in it for the flash - our goal was to secure long term success.Replace Your Income is our way of sharing the lessons we’ve learned with our community. We’re hoping to provide you with enough reasons to get off the bench and start hitting those singles! In episodes to come, we’ll share some of our key principles, invite clients to tell their story, and catch up with experts on current industry trends.Key Takeaways:Welcome to Replace Your Income podcast (1:11)Steve’s inspiring backstory (2:16)How Steve risked everything to become an entrepreneur (6:33)My life before real estate (10:42)Steve’s early experiences with the real estate industry (16:10)The mortgage deal that changed the course of my career (19:41)How Steve and I started working together (23:40)Why we founded Done For You Real Estate (26:08)What each of us is bringing to the table (28:13)The purpose of this podcast and what to expect from future episodes (31:01)Helping people replace their income (The Moneyball Approach) (32:46)Why you need to change your approach to the game (34:50)Additional Resources:Learn more about Done For You Real Estate: VISIT HEREGet a FREE Income Replacement Estimate (IRE): APPLY HERE--SUBSCRIBE for more Replace Your Income:https://bit.ly/ReplaceYourIncomePodcastIf you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review our podcast. Join me and Chris for a fascinating look into his life on the cusp of the release of his album and his undying passion for  Cowboy tradition and the modern cowboy lifestyle. For 2019 Chris is set to release a highly anticipated new album. Chris teamed up with Nashville producer, Trent Willmon, who will be producing the album. Chris wrote or co-wrote 11 of the 12 songs to be included on the album and Willmon co-wrote 8 of the 12 songs.  As a songwriter Trent has written many songs that have been cut by other notable artists including Brad Paisley, Eric Church, Little Big Town, Cody Johnson, Blake Shelton, Maddie and Tae, Merle Haggard, Wade Hayes, Randy Houser, Kevin Fowler, Granger Smith, Roger Creager, and many more. Trent also is credited with the Billboard top 5 hit “Keep on Lovin’ You” by Steel Magnolia, and Montgomery Gentry’s #1 hit “Back When I Knew it All.” As a producer Trent has truly shined and is credited in large part for the rise of Nashville’s newest sensation, Cody Johnson. Cody’s Album, “Ain’t Nothin’ to It”, also produced by Willmon reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Country Charts in 2019. Chris was raised in a small town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Here he developed a love for horses, and everything about the cowboy lifestyle. He was drawn to the old cowboys around town who took him under their wing and taught him about horses. Chris built a love of starting colts and building confidence in young horses. By combining his love for horses and a love for art and photography, Chris started Diehard Cowboy–A company built to share the cowboy lifestyle and his authentic music with others. Chris spends as much time as he can riding horses and starting colts. Chris also works for several ranches to get a reprieve from his regular schedule. You can take a glimpse in this life by following. @Diehardcowboy_ Chris got somewhat of a late start into his music career. Earlier in life the fear of singing in front of other people kept him from getting on stage. Even though Chris never sang in public until he was in college, music was always present. Chris would often write songs while driving, or riding his horses, but singing would only happen around his close friends. Friends soon began to encourage him to sing more and to share his songs. Eventually Chris started writing and recording the songs that he had written but they were only heard by those in his inner circle. A turning point came when Country Musician, Collin Raye, heard a burnt CD of a few of Chris’ songs. Collin asked if Chris would be willing to open an upcoming concert for him. The night of the concert came and Chris faced his fear, took the stage, and sang to a hometown crowd. This was a moment that changed Chris’ life. After encouragement from Collin Raye, Chris set his sights on pursuing his career as a songwriter and performer. It took a lot of  work to overcome his fear. Chris spent a full year singing once a week at a local venue with his guitar before he finally felt he could play for a crowd. Eventually Chris was playing for larger audiences in shows across the country. He played during the Houston Rodeo at NRG park,  and even packed his guitar to Missouri. In 2017 Chris was selected as a finalist at the Kerrville Songwriting Competition in, Kerrville, Texas. Many past finalists had gone on to become notable performers  like, Steve Earl, Tom Russel, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, and Zane Williams. Chris has always been a big supporter of the men and women who serve our country and communities. He has written two songs in their honor. “Every Time I Hear the Rain” as well as “He Still Pays the Price.” As a musician Chris sticks to his country roots. He loves playing traditional country music with influences like George Strait, Merle Haggard, and Chris Ledoux. These influences are also reflected in Chris’ writing. Chris writes songs that are authentic and true to his...

But really, in the hands of these hilarious comedians, Steve Rosenfield, Jim Earl, and Troy Conrad, it’s a surprisingly fun and informative show. We start with Jim Earl’s hilarious book of fake obituaries, “Mourning Remembrance”, which gets my highest recommendation, which is that it ”Belongs on the back of every toilet in America”. Next, we discuss a very interesting book about creativity, ‘The Icarus Deception’, with Troy Conrad, the man behind one of comedy’s most creative hit shows, ‘Set List’. And finally, we delve deep into the genius mind and compelling career of Christopher Hitchens, whose book ‘God Is Not Great’ explains everything you need to know about organized religion, and a lot about Steve Rosenfield’s career choices.! !! “God Is Not Great” - Christopher Hitchens ISBN - 978-0-446-57980-3 Pub.
